      grienke was trying to get on the same page as the catcher, he wasnt saying "fastball!" or anything like that. he was saying stuff like "1st sign after 3", to let the catcher know what pitch he wanted to throw." not trying to tell the hitter what pitch was coming.

    There no rule in baseball saying you can't grab the signs. It might be an unwritten rule but no actual rule to trying to sneak a peek. For him to stretch out as far as he did and still make good enough contact to put it in the bleachers is solely a testament to his strength and talent.

      Sign-stealing is part of the game, and always has been. That's why catchers have to change their signs. Using industrial espionage to steal signs and gain an unfair advantage is where the Astros crossed the line.

    That pitch sequence tracker sounds like a great idea in my opinion
    Edit: lol reply section is on fire. If this was to happen, like jomboy said, it would only be like a the first letter or an abbreviation of the pitch so that it doesn’t clutter the screen and would prob be placed like under the score or something lol. Also not all of us recognize pitches straight away and even if you can you might miss one or two, especially a pitcher with a heavy arsenal.

    As an little league ex-catcher myself, I was taught early on to manage and hide my signs (i.e. hide and go to the mound to switch them up when in doubt). I was also taught to read, try to figure them out, and relay them when I was at second base as a runner. I don't see why a batter peeking would be called cheating. It's part of the game.

Major leaguers have some of the best control, but it doesnt mean that theyre gonna hit every spot, so guessing the location of pitches isnt very optimal when he couldve accidentally bust him inside. Knowing exactly what pitch he’s throwing is way more valuable so you can have the right timing of his pitches, which Tatis missed.

After 1 incident where we cant even conclusively determine that he got the sign, were just gonna label him a cheater??? Are you gonna go look back at every single Tatis At bat to see if he saw the signs? If you do, let me know what you find, cuz im curious to know.

      @@ononegunna Astros used cameras to figure out sign sequences and banged on trash cans to let their players know what pitch is coming, even if they changed the sequence. Tatis even if he saw the sign would most likely have no clue what pitch was coming, only thing that would be helpful in his situation is direction. Pretty big difference between the two

    bruh - in football you literally hear the qb and try to hack their game plan by learning their calls. Peeking at the pitch is not cheating because you can always change what each sign means if you really wanted to throw batters off.

      I thought that was the whole idea of signs. You do it in a way where even if someone saw it you don't know what the sign actually was "like 3rd base signs, everyone can see them". We used to do the first or last sign was the real sign, or the second to last sign, or the sign that comes after a certain sign, changed it every game.

      Its not cheating. If your pitcher needs signs, the hitter can see it, i would expect nothing less than the hitter deciphering it.
      You can use tactics, so can I.
      Thats like in a boxing/mma fight the opposing teams coach says something am i s’posed to close my ears and pretend i didn’t listen when i clearly can? If i get an advantage and i didn’t cheat my way to get it, then by god i am going to use that. Stfu with integrity BS

      What you saw is exactly why pitching inside is an important part of baseball. And it's been lost because the league refuses to crack down on whiny batters that divebomb the plate, get hit, then want to act upset or potentially start a basebrawl.

If you're suspicious, just do like a 1 finger, 2 finger, 1, 1, 2 and that can just mean "fastball", and there's no way Tatis would ever know. I blame the pitcher/catcher on this one.

    He's not stealing signs he's looking to see where the catcher shifts too. It's very difficult to see signs but knowing if the pitch is inside or outside is much easier to pick up on.

Little league encompasses several age groups 4-14, as a catcher by the time you're 12 if you don't know about batters peeking your not getting on a HS team roster.       @AM3 Lagrimas YES absolutely, that's why catchers practice repositioning, subtle footwork, hidden barehand and a delayed ready glove. If a pitcher feels like his signs are being stolen he has the option to speed/switch up the delivery or reset by fully stepping off the rubber to mess with the batters timing. Bauer knows for a fact he got caught sleeping, what makes peeking so different from base stealing? because in my eyes they both take advantage of sloppy defense.

A runner actually watches the pitcher when stealing bases, the batter must turn away from the ball and the field of play to look at the catcher.

      I won't lie: watching games on television can definitely be boring. Especially with some of the elite pitchers throwing low scoring games. Granted, there's a ton of small details to the sport which are fun to watch once you learn more about it. Not to mention appreciating the level of skill and precision required for some plays.     If the catcher isn't hiding the sign, the batter has the right to peak. If they are worried about peaking, just do multiple signs like when they have a runner at 2nd.

      It's actually no different with technology vs a runner standing on 2nd Base. If the team doesn't have complex signs or continues to use the same signs repeatedly without changing them...then it's their fault if the other team cracks the code. Teams all across the League were using technology to steal signs. Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers etc. It's just that the Astros were the scapegoat because they won the WS and didn't have a major media market supporting them.

    Peeking isn’t cheating. It’s part of the game. Coming from a catcher I think it’s your responsibility to make sure the hitter isn’t peeking when you’re giving signs/setting up

    Honestly, after Bauer admitted on multiple occasions to doctoring baseballs to manipulate his spin rate, I don't really see a problem with what Tatis did.
