pupusas are traditionally made with lard instead of water in the masa so they're not too dry. i don't usually like that cabbage mix so i go for this tomato sauce specifically made for pupusas and LORD it makes them so amazing. so glad you enjoyed them!!!
pupusas are my childhood. so glad you gave these a go! your masa definitely needed more water, btw. the consistency simillar to cookie dough. Your pupusas came out looking great anyway. I recommend making a tomato sauce next time to go with this. Boil like 4 tomatoes with an optional jalapeño, some white onion, and add salt to your liking. once everything has gotten to know each other ;), toss it in a blender with some of the water you boiled it in and blend away. Then throw it back in the pot/pan u used to boil it and heat it up until it starts boiling. ive really only ever seen my mom make it... haven't tried it out myself so im sorry for not having exact instructions. but anyway, so glad you made these!
Pupusas are the bomb its street food that cost like $0.70! Im Salvadorian and the cheese we use is call “quesillo” not mozzarella so that way it wont be dry, I guess they used mozzarella in the recipe because quesillo is very hard to find. Great Job David!
i normally never comment on videos, but i’m salvadoran and pupusas are my absolute favorite food! normally people are confused as to what they are when i eat them so it’s great that your giving them some recognition. glad you enjoyed them!
Those "burnt bits" on your pan are called 'FOND' all you needed to do was had quarter cup of wine or water to the pan and boil it when pan is still hot. Add the juices to the pork in blender.
Maybe next time he can do it. Perhaps he would have rated the dish a 9.8775 if he made a sauce with the fond. It’s really concentrated enhanced flavor.
yeah i would of threw the peppers and onions into the pan their moisture would have lifted all that pork goodness off the pan and made it easier to clean lol
We love Pupusas - there are a few great places to get them here in Toronto, so we've never really thought about making them at home... maybe we should!
im Salvadoran and omg I love when people see how amazing pupusas are, I knew you were not gonna be disappointed!! ( btw the cole slaw thing it's called "curtido" the means pickled, and you felt it was a but dry bc you need to add the sauce, just a regular homemade tomato sauce) also the kind of pupusas that you're trying it's called "revuelta" wich means "mixed" love youuuu ❤❤❤❤
Hi! I just caught this video of yours. I’m Salvadoran, and have a few recommendations in case you ever want to make more pupusas: 1. Your masa was too dry. That was why it cracked. But you did the right thing: add a bit more water to the dough, and also put some oil on your hands when you’re forming the pupusas. 2. If you use a little bit of oil on your hands while you’re forming the pupusas, you don’t need to add any more to the pan, comal or griddle. The pupusas are not meant to be fried. 3. Next time, try using pork shoulder, neck or pork butt instead. The fat content of those cuts is a lot closer to the one we use to make our “chicharrón” (don’t confuse it with other countries’ chicharrón; ours is meat fried in its own fat). 4. You can also try pupusas revueltas, which combines cheese (mozzarella, Oaxaca, quesillo, enredo) with chicharrón and refried red beans. They’re to die for! 5. You can also substitute the corn masa harina for rice flour. Deliciously good! 6. Our “curtido” or pickled coleslaw is not that pungent. We use pineapple vinegar mixed with water. We also add salt, pepper and other goodies like cucumbers, big onion slices and jalapeño peppers. The vinegar helps cut the heaviness from the pork and provides texture while complementing the pupusa’s flavors. 7. Don’t even think about eating pupusas with sour cream. That’s crazy! But most Salvadorans like a very light tomato sauce on top of the pupusa and/or curtido. Finally, thank you for bringing one of our culinary treasures into your world and sharing it with your viewers! PS: I am truly impressed to see how many Salvadorans watched your video. Besides the comments about the dry masa and the lack of salsa, everybody was impressed with your efforts. That’s amazing. Congratulations!!!
David you are the best! I literally could cry. The pupusa is a staple in my life. My parents are Salvadoran so it means alot to me that you made these. I would love to maybe one day send you some or go with you to eat them. It makes me so happy to see you enjoy them. So much love to you!
I'm realy happy you enjoy this recipe.. but as someone who have try autentic Pupusas in El Salvador I can tell you they don't use Mozarella cheese and the reason why is dry is becuse you are missing the salsa made with tomatos, onion and red pepper. Also, my mom add a 1/2 teaspoon of butter with the cheese so it gets more melty and delicious!
Hi David! When my mom(or I) cook pork like that, we typically use a deep set pot, (we use a wok honestly) with oil that reaches at least half way on the meat, it makes cooking it more easier and less burnt stuff suck on the pot! You just use a slotted spoon to get them out and then let them drain on a paper towel!
i love sour cream on my pupusas lol but yea he lacked the salsa and used pork loin which isnt fatty enough and any latino and uses masa knows that dough NEEDED lard so his decision to throw oil into it was on the right track
You know he’s making it when he hits 300k subscribers, so just stop pestering him and share his videos and get your friends to subscribe if you really want it that bad!
As a Salvadoran you did a good job! It’s so weird to see someone who isn’t Salvadoran do them even though those aren’t the ingredients you normally would use lmaoo
We dont use mozzarella cheese, we have our own type of cheese called "Quesillo" it's very different, and the pork is called "Chicharrón" it is basically pork fat fried until crispy, it isn't pork meat, I bet That What you made was delicious but I bet you if you come to El Salvador to try them, you'll discover That they are completely different and much more delicious!
Es que hay chicharrón de grasa y chicharrón de carne, usas más el de carne pero siempre le pones de grasa. Y el secreto en las pupuserias es moler el chicharrón con pan seco
Totally love this video! I wonder what you’re going to do next? My friend says she loves your channel, and her favorite video is the pizza bomb one. Personally, I love whenever you do desserts. Actually, I think you’re going to reach 500k in no time. New videos come out so much, you’re definitely going to be relevant. On another note, have a good day!
Wow, I’m actually surprised by your subscriber count. I’ve been watching you for probably 2-3 years now and by how well your videos are made and regularly posted, I thought you would’ve been close to a million by now. Not saying this in a bad way! But these videos deserve so much more views than what they get and you definitely deserve more subscribers too. TH-cam really needs to start recommending actual entertaining channels like yours, plus these videos double as entertaining and educational which should be recommended.
Growing up half Salvadoran my mom and great aunt would make these all the time. I would try and be like them and how they would make the process look like clockwork. I would dip my fingers in water and grab a tiny ball of masa, fill them with my favorite ingredients pat them between my palm and make mini pupusas that my sweet Great aunt Kika would put on the skillet and cook for me. Seeing Salvadoran food becoming more mainstream and appreciated is weird yet heart warming. I hope they bring you all as much joy as they have for me over the years.
David watching you make and enjoy it made me so happy!! I highly recommend you order some from a Spanish restaurant, it usually comes with a salsa and the curtido
My abuelita makes these often but for me she only makes bean and cheese since I don't eat pork, and I eat them with a salsa that goes with them not only the Curtido.
Omg I'm such a fan of u and the fact that u tried pupusas makes me so proud! You can try and mix many more things for the filling: like red refried beans and cheese, just cheese, shrimp and cheese and many more...actually in El Salvador we have what we call a pupusa loca; it's a very, ridiculously large pupusa with all the fillings you want: pork, beans, cheese etc. Thank you for making this video! 🤗💕
As a Salvadorena, I am very impressed, great job! There is a tomato sauce that goes with this dish that I wish you could have tried to but I am glad you enjoyed it! 💜☺️
You are right about needing moisture. Curly didnt say in the video but we eat pupusas with that slaw (curtido) and salsa. Its like a thinned (more liquid and vinegary) version of a marinara sauce. If you make them with your family next time try some salsa recepies out :)! Awesome video!
You know you're watching too much Babish when David references the burned bits on the bottom of his pan, and you're instinctively like, "It's FOND, David. Use the fond."
Next time use regular cabbage while making Curtido and when you ferment it it should if you can be in the jar for at least 24 hours or longer to get the best taste
I'm Salvadoran myself and love to see when people make Pupusas. Pupusas are amazing and can never be a disappointment. My favorite Pupusas fillings are queso y frijoles (beans & cheese) and also spinach and cheese. I’ve also tried rice Pupusas, they’re good but not as good as the authentic flour mix! 🤩 EDIT: There is also a salsa that goes with Pupusas and make it more moist so it isn’t so dry to eat!
Omg I never hit like before see the video however I’m so happy to get something from El Salvador 🇸🇻 I’m so proud to be from a country that has the most unique food and so delicious 🤤 you should try more like making Nuegados or empanadas de leche and give more videos of Latin food!
5:58 David if you wait hours to try these like you usually do, if they’re cold and the cheese doesn’t stretch like they’re suppose to do, I will cry. You waiting hours later to try the food makes me cringe so much to where I cry. Imma hit play then update. 7:31 I’m so happy you didn’t wait hours later to try them !😭 finally.
He finally ate something while it’s hot
Ah telling yuh
Haha finally! 😆
You should do a series trying recipes from different countrys
Nicole Perez YES
Nicole Perez yeah that’d be a lot better
Seriously, yes! So tired of the average recipes that you know are gonna taste good.
Was gonna suggest this too. That would be fun and different than what he normally does!
He should! It would give more diversity tbh
David actually eats the food while its hot.. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WORLD
Omg thats what i thought when he said 'ouch its burning my hand'
pupusas are traditionally made with lard instead of water in the masa so they're not too dry. i don't usually like that cabbage mix so i go for this tomato sauce specifically made for pupusas and LORD it makes them so amazing. so glad you enjoyed them!!!
I mix the cabbage with the tomato sauce 😋
My mom never used lard. I wonder if the pupusa places I go to make them with lard.
ive never heard of anyone using lard for pupusas, just a bit of oil
loyd idk, my family uses lard so it may differ for each salvadorian city. it gives it flavor & takes away the need for oil.
Flo yeah i know different parts of el salvador make them differently i need to try it like that.
Take a shot of the pumpkin spice jungle juice every time you read a comment that has timpano in it.
LOL. He will die from alcohol poisoning
He would need his stomach pumped after.
He dead rip

The “slaw” is called curtido. :)
No one cares bitch xoxoxoxooxoxoxoxoxoxxooxx
Love curtido on everything
Thank you! I'm Mexican but even I didn't know this.
Diana Delgado finally someone said it
that's so weird, in honduras we call it encurtido
Pupusas are the bomb its street food that cost like $0.70! Im Salvadorian and the cheese we use is call “quesillo” not mozzarella so that way it wont be dry, I guess they used mozzarella in the recipe because quesillo is very hard to find. Great Job David!

I've been professionally cooking for 28 years so I'm not getting down on David. His cooking skills are light years ahead of where he used to be!
Your onion slicing is ON POINT!

Can you share the recipe?
My mom used a mixture of mozzarella and feta I think everyone makes there's different
Everyone makes there differently.
Kaito everyone makes them differently but in el salvador no one really uses mozzarella that’s more of an american pupusas thing
David trying to pronounce masa harena 😩
I thought the same 😅
harina
harIna
Hi David! Adding sour cream? COme on, David HAHAHA
Typical Americans eh?
Hahahahaha he just doesn't know that pupusas are eaten with a tomato sauce, the tasty video didn't explain that.
i love sour cream on my pupusas lol but yea he lacked the salsa and used pork loin which isnt fatty enough and any latino and uses masa knows that dough NEEDED lard so his decision to throw oil into it was on the right track
They already have melted cheese inside and David is lactose intolerant lmao rip David

I’m literally trying to scroll through all of your videos to see if I missed any.. and I didn’t. You gotta upload more David. I’m addicted 😂😂😂
If we don't vote for anything, maybe he'll have no other choice than to do the timpano

😍 Homemade pupusas are gold. And as a Salvadorian, I can say I hate the “slaw” (it’s called Curtido) 😂😂
How can you be Salvadoran and hate the curtido?? LOLOL. (I’m joking, but I’m also Salvadoran and would eat curtido with almost everything).
Oh I’m so happy you tried something from different cultures! I’m Mexican but I love buying street pupusas. They are so delicious 😋
Omg yes! Im glad you loved them! ☺️🇸🇻🇸🇻 You made them perfectly
Like is it just me or do I get so excited when David posts a new videooo

I'm in college now, so I don't get to have them nearly as much anymore. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face David
David watching you make and enjoy it made me so happy!! I highly recommend you order some from a Spanish restaurant, it usually comes with a salsa and the curtido
Applause.. Decades of making these and all the components i can see ur honest work... And that does come with a sauce....
Loving these videos perfect for Halloween.
My abuelita makes these often but for me she only makes bean and cheese since I don't eat pork, and I eat them with a salsa that goes with them not only the Curtido.
I’m from El Salvador and I literally screamed when I saw your video! So freaking excited 💁🏽♀️💕
Woah, that looks so good! And also it looks easy to make, I'm definetly trying it.
Omg I'm such a fan of u and the fact that u tried pupusas makes me so proud! Damnnn did anyone else see David's onion cutting skills? I applaud you
I woke up right now and my grandma and mom are busy being Salvadoran and I woke up to this
Omg you did so good! As a Salvadoran I am super impressed! Thank you for doing these
have been curious how these taste, so glad you made a video on this
I love seeing David enjoy what he cooked. He should do the recipes he wants to do, more often.
As a Salvadorian a have respect for you trading to get them done 😂😂🤦🏻♀️
The second pumpkin spice video better be a pumpkin spice timpano
As a Salvadorena, I am very impressed, great job! There is a tomato sauce that goes with this dish that I wish you could have tried to but I am glad you enjoyed it! 💜☺️
they look soooo good
I'm amazed of how good they look, not bad at all for your first try, good job.
Miss my pupusas sooo much!
You are right about needing moisture. Curly didnt say in the video but we eat pupusas with that slaw (curtido) and salsa. Its like a thinned (more liquid and vinegary) version of a marinara sauce. If you make them with your family next time try some salsa recepies out :)! Awesome video!
You pronounced it amazingly!
Loved this video David! I'm actually Salvadorean, you did a really good job making them.
Pupusas are bomb af.
Pickled red cabbage is actually a traditional Christmas food in Denmark
We’re so close to 300k you guys!! THE TIMPANO WILL HAPPEN!

PUPUSAS! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 I voted for these on that last poll! Thank youuu! 😘😘😘
He must me getting tired of the timpano comments
You know you're watching too much Babish when David references the burned bits on the bottom of his pan, and you're instinctively like, "It's FOND, David. Use the fond."
Omg yesss I was waiting for it !
Love your channel I been here since the beginning
Literally had pupusas for dinner tonight and I've never clicked a video so fast. But now I'm hungry again 😩
Next time use regular cabbage while making Curtido and when you ferment it it should if you can be in the jar for at least 24 hours or longer to get the best taste
papus me up david
why does this sound inappropriate
"Pimp me up daddy"
How is this the only video I’ve EVER missed and I just got it in my recommended now?!!
Ooooo they look lovely, going to make them tomorrow, love your vids David 💜
JUST HIT 300K ALREADY 🙏
Great instincts David! Yes, add more water to the masa mixture. I've seen ppl making tortillas and they are crack and dry at the end. Great job!
Every single time I watch a new episode I want to buy David a new grater. But omg that speed when cutting the onions dude
Some people add a bit of lard to the flour so it wont come out so dry. Thank you David for making this video.
These are life changing.
Buzzfeed and you made these so wrong but it’s okay because it really do 🅱️ like that
I died so hard with his pronunciation 😂💀 but at least he tried 🤷♀️
Please do the how I make my favorite Hispanic recipes!!
EDIT: There is also a salsa that goes with Pupusas and make it more moist so it isn’t so dry to eat!
Omg I never hit like before see the video however I’m so happy to get something from El Salvador 🇸🇻 I’m so proud to be from a country that has the most unique food and so delicious 🤤 you should try more like making Nuegados or empanadas de leche and give more videos of Latin food!
You eat pupusas with a tomato sauce so that they aren't so dry
Shd be studying but instead I’m here binge watching buzzfeed tests
Getting pretty close to 300k you're gonna do the tampino right??? I love you channel happy to see you grow so fast ♡
R u ok you don't sound good :000
You forgot the salsa ! Lol these looked so delicious! Great job !
You have to try the AREPAS
Hi David, I just wanted you to know that pupusas are typically eaten with tomato sauce and the helps with the flavors.
Nice mini timpanos you got there
5:58 David if you wait hours to try these like you usually do, if they’re cold and the cheese doesn’t stretch like they’re suppose to do, I will cry. You waiting hours later to try the food makes me cringe so much to where I cry. Imma hit play then update.
7:31 I’m so happy you didn’t wait hours later to try them !😭 finally.
