- Welcome back guys! Today we’re looking at three ways Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can fix Man Utd’s midfield problems.

Manchester United’s double pivot isn’t a problem in all situations. In bigger, or more chaotic games, the industry and energy of Fred and Scott McTominay is perfect for stopping the opposition progressing through United’s centre. Where Manchester United tend to struggle is in games where they dominate possession or there isn’t any space to exploit.

In preseason, Ole seemed to have found a winning partnership in the form of Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek. Van de Beek’s quick, one touch play and ability to receive in every situation but still retain the ball would create time for Matic to take more touches and still find a dangerous progressive pass. In the 4-0 win over Everton this duo thrived. Why the combination worked so well is because Matic was given more defensive responsibility, which gave Donny more freedom to play further from his partner, creating space for each other and making United more difficult to press with a 4-4-2.

The next way Solskjaer could improve the midfield progression is by reducing it. United don’t have to focus their play in central areas. A number of quality teams look to progress the ball down the flanks including Chelsea and especially Liverpool who use their full backs to do the majority of their progressive passing. Solskjaer could do something similar with his own full backs.
Luke Shaw is already an excellent option at left back with a very complete passing range on his left foot but Aaron Wan-Bissaka can struggle to play a progressive pass. Either he prefers to play inside or backwards or he takes too many touches and his side becomes overloaded, forcing him to pass sideways or backwards.

And the final way Solskjaer could fix Manchester United’s midfield is to sign a progressive midfielder.
There are reportedly a number of players on the market right now, but the two who I’d like to see at Old Trafford are Eduardo Camavinga or Ruben Neves. Camavinga is a star of the future and is reportedly available for 35 million euros. Whilst the 18 year old could go straight into the first team, it’s more likely that he’d take time to adapt to life in the Premier League. But given he’d be a staple in United’s midfield for the next decade, he’d still be a bargain.

We had 6 winnable fixtures followed by 6 hard ones out of the next seven (including Arsenal who seem to beat us even when not in great form lately) we should be taking maximum points from those first half dozen games and get some good form, momentum and confidence going. The injury to McT highlights just how thin our squad is in Defensive Midfield, we shouldn't be having to play people out of position after just one injury, we need Neves in NOW.

Incorrect! Olé relies on them because the only other senior squad option is Matic who is slow, hasn't got the legs and can't play more than once a week. Donny isn't a no. 6, United need Neves and Camavinga....the board should sell Lingard for £20m up front and use that to finance the first years payments for Neves and Camavinga. Just offer what Wolves and Rennes want (within reason) and they would probably agree to a staggered payment fee over 5 years. That way United sort out the DM problem AND have a long term replacement for Pogba already in place. United have a few million from the sell on clause on Lukaku to help with their wages and once Pogba goes they will be £290k a week better off.

i know ppl like to pile on Fred too much, of course it is warranted, but currently he is our most industrious defensive player, with his tackling we regain back possession fairly quickly. against Soton, we failed to keep the attacking momentum the moment we took fred out, nobody was winning the midfield battle and recycle the ball back. would like to see him and VdB pair up together in the middle of the park.

Neves just showed us the gulf in class between him and Fred today! Screened the backline with composure and sprayed dangerous passese to Traore from deep. Fred almost lost us 2 goals in the first 15 mins!

With everyone available, I would love to see McTominay and VDB or if by some miracle we do sign a midfielder as the the double pivot. Fred's lack of quality passing and progression neuters so many attacks early on, and his work rate alone is not enough to make up for his offensive ineptitude.

Imo Neves seems to be the right immediate fit, while Camavinga is the more versatile, with potential to be one of the best single pivots in the world. While it's in the air if we actually sign anyone, it's an area of concern for a while now
I have been saying this for ages! Get Donny into the double Pivot and use DALOT! Diogo can be a world class fullback if he is actually given a chance to develop, and this will allow united to actually let AWB get some recovery in, so he is not exhausted.
Personally I feel that Yves Bissouma would be a better fit than Camavinga. He's got Premier League experience, is great on the ball and solid in the tackle. Reminds me of a prime Matic at Chelsea.

@@emmanuelogelle3965 Players can operate in multiple positions/roles. He plays in a slightly more attacking role at BHA at the moment, but he's played deeper in the past and has all the skills necessary to do so.
I'd rather a traditional ball winning 6. Like you say we have plenty of natural no.8's including Pogba who is one of the best in the world. What we need is a CDM with exceptional defensive stats which is why Bissouma gets my vote. Doing all the dirty work alongside Pogba would be perfect.

Well you say that the McFred works in bigger games, but last season we were bad in a lot of bigger games, with 0-0s against Chelsea, City, Liverpool, and Arsenal (and the other loss to Arsenal).
Those teams found a way to defend against United's counter and now we struggle to break down any tight defense regardless of the team.
Crazy how perfect Neves would be for United.
Neves is more like an orchestrator. United would need a destroyer like ndidi or rice

Rice is a good compromise, but I don’t actually think Ndidi would be worth anywhere near the money he would cost, his ball distribution is pretty bad.

With Mctominey's surgery, getting a CDM would be great. It's been a necessity for a long time now, and getting the deal over the line in this situation is gonna be great for both club and fans. Neves is great, and being Manchester United, we can get both Neves and Camavinga.

AWB is why some argue that signing Trippier is more important than a CM. Trippier can replicate what shaw does on the left and that will solve a lot of our penetration issues
Hey Dave, the criticism we constantly hear about Neves is he doesn't cover enough ground. Do you know how he measures up for average distance covered per 90, compared to other centre midfielders?
I've done a bit of research myself and he averages about 390km covered in season (around 10km per 90) which usually puts him comfortably in the top 15 of players in the league for distance covered in a season. I'd say he covers quite a fair bit of ground. Sorry if my numbers are wrong, I gathered this off a quick research but I desperately want Neves at utd
Even if he doesn't, we have two center-backs and two defensively solid full-backs who also happen to be fast and aggressive one on one. Football teams nowadays always have four or five players sitting back anyway.

I do agree with your suggestions, but I believe Saul of Atletico Madrid would be the best and affordable player as he is Atletico's academy graduate and played for all his career under Simeone managership who is well known as master of defensive plans. Also Saul is 26 and can play in any position along midfield (CM/CDM, AM, or box-to-box midfielder)... He is known for his expertise and composure under pressure besides his dribbling ability which enables him to play at the head of the triangle in front of the defense to move the ball forward to start attack...

Sell Lingard and Martial, play Pogba on the left as in first two matches and use the money to buy both Neves and Camavinga in a double pivot.

Tchouameni is better. He has all those things you mentioned but has better defensive stats and is a better ball carrier. He is at or very close to the Casemiro, Fabinho, Verratti, Kante class of CDM's as he is right now. Of the transferable/available CDM's in European football, he is THE best. Top 5 CDMs in the world in the next 3 years. is an EASY call with Tchouameni

Bruno can only operate the way he does, because of Fred, but Fred's more of liability than an asset (depend on how you look at it I suppose). He's making Bruno great, but at the same time our defense will suffer especially if Matic (older, and slower), Pogba, lindeloef, or Bailly (card/fk/pen magnet) is there playing alongside him. That's why Fred is being best paired with highly energetic/enthusiastic McT. Maybe Portuguese connection can do wonders? Will see.
Without money. 4-1-4-1; De Gea/Henderson, AWB, Shaw, Maguire, Varane, Lindelof(DM), Pogba(CM) B. Fernandes(CM), Sancho, Rashford/Greenwood, CR7. Or 4-1-3-2 Lindelof(DM) Pogba, De Beek, B. Fernandes, CR7, Cavani/Greenwood.
We should forget specialist midfielders because there’s a small amount of them these days and the board aren’t willing to pay for the other specialist to create balance. So that means getting rid of Pogba even though he’s the most talented player we’ve got. Having midfielders like camavinga,Saul, Bissouma, donny and neves makes more sense right now. All of them can share defensive responsibilities and make us unpredictable in build up. From ball carrying from bissouma, deep balls from Neves or small interact passes from donny. We would finally have balance. All these players are at a cheap/very reasonable price/reasonable age too. The only down fall is reduction In height but Varane and Maguire should help cover that.

I think United board tend to sign player that available in the market and has marketing value, but not really the player they need. Last season they signed van de beek when they actually need a CB, this season they desperately need CDM but they prioritise sancho, they signed amad and pellistri but neither of them become the starting eleven.
United are always 1 year late in fixing their problem so every year their team isnt complete and have many holes. Its hard for them to compete with chelsea and man city because the incompetence of the board.
Saul was a big miss again. 5mil loan with 30mil option was a blessing.
At this point, McTominay is definite starter. I would play either VDB next to him, or train Lindelof to be CDM.
Matic is too slow too clumsy, Fred is not good. Garner Mejbri still too young.
Pogba is not for central mid.
This will be our biggest weakness this year. Although Maguire will need to improve as well.
Most important question will be how we will do with Sancho and Rashford this year. Will they get those numbers we need?
Now that we got Ronaldo we can stop relying on Martial.

If we will have Haland to replace Cavani next summer, add Hummels/Kjaer/Felipe on free, maybe add Goretzka on free or maybe even can snatch Saul out of Chelsea after loan, then we will have a complete team.

The problem with Neves is what you said he does good... stepping out and closing down the dribbler... we don't need another midfielder that just runs to the play... because if they cock up we are exposed... Neves can do this at Wolves as they play with a back 3... we need someone to cut the passing lanes and shield the defence and even drop into defence if the fullback's get exposed...
I think Man utd can also play in sort of back 3. One of the main issues of the awb was his attack output last season but he is great at defending and 1vs1 so let him stay back when the team is attacking and make a back 3 with varane and maguire so the defensive midfielder (in this case neves but can be other) can screen infront of them.

Whenever we buy a hybrid midfielder they come up short. Ndidi is the obvious answer. Good at keeping tempo, and intercepting. Would suit Pogba excellent in the double pivot, and we might actually get the best out of Pogba giving him the freedom to bomb forwards, or control from deep. Pogba does have the passing range of Neves easily.
Whenever we try the fancy solutions it fails. Donny, Fred and McTominay are the hybrid kind of dm, and it does not work. Get a proper CDM, and we can interchange Pogba and DVB besides him.
Or get Neves/camavinga/saul, and sell pogba. And we would still be needing an actual DM.

All this sounds good if Ole is flexible... He'd never play DVB regularly or Dalot that's the problem. They definitely need a midfielder that's comfortable with the ball Fred, struggle to get the ball out, struggle with quick passes. A good CDM should be able to allow 2 more attacking players Eg. Pogba and Bruno to play the way they play. Rodri or Fernandinho lets Gundogan and KDB do whatever they want... we don't have that player.
I'd say United should even borderline consider playing Varane at CDM, he's great on the ball, and will protect the back 4.

neves clearly could play as a defensive midfielder or even as deep lying midfielder with his long pass and vision he showed to us at wolves game. he would clearly suit the squad quick-counter style
Matic - simply shouldn't be starting PL games. He immediately slows down the tempo of the game, better to be used when Utd need to see out games.
It may be unpopular opinion, but I do believe McFred is the best option. They've got good chemistry with and off the ball. Also, our attacking players seem to be more willing to express themselves when they have McFred behind them.
Sadly, there are no top CDM in the market presently. Camavinga may take time to settle; a proper deep-lying midfielder is what we need, and Neves isn't that.

Whatever happens with transfers now, Ollie has to start trying different tactics and rotating his squad more. We are far too predicatble and McFred is clearly ineffective for a lot of matches

I think If we got got Saul on loan and sign cammavinga I feel this is a good idea because i feel this provides depth and time for cammavinga and won’t cost us the big money

Out of all these options i would rather get Camavinga he is younger as well but for now Neves would be much better
Bissouma isn't a No. 6 and Ndidi isn't an option and is more of a destroyer and box to box player than a defensive shield and deep laying playmaker, he would be more of an upgrade on McT.
