The REAL REASON RuneScape Classic is Closing

  • It was just announced the RuneScape classic servers will be closed on the 6th of August 2018, but are we getting the full story as to why? This is a very sad time for the RuneScape classic community, and it would be nice to have more insight into why they servers are being turned off. The problems listed in office post are trivial at best. Jagex is seemly going out of their way to destroy the roots of RuneScape, possibly due to cost cuts.

      Nick Langley RSC will never come back. But I could easily see servers becoming significantly larger because of their mobile advantage. The same reason RS became popular. It was an MMORPG that could run on shit internet and grandma's computer. RSC private servers run flawlessly on crappy phones with crappy internet. I've been literally in the middle of nowhere with just enough data to load Google and then waited 10-20 seconds for the next Google result page to load and the games smooth and not laggy. So it has a purpose and I could see it making a small come back if people realized it. It would be more for setting aside 5-10 minutes when you have nothing to do. Quick log in. Do something or kill some things. Log out. The games so simple that I feel it'll work better than the osrs and rs3 mobiles

    • @NaughtyKlaus
      @NaughtyKlaus 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My point was that if any server gets 20k, it would be rsc legacy. It'll never get close to 20k, it'd be lucky to get 100 active players, but I could see it getting more activity now that rsc is being shut down.

    There's a good chance it has to do with GDPR compliance for their EU customers. They'd have to go in and add privacy protections to products like Funorb, classic, etc. That would require potentially major features to be built, as well as other compliance measures. Jagex doesn't want to invest developer time into that.
    Funny enough if this IS the case Jagex is just being lazy with the announcement, plenty of international companies are publicly acknowledging GDPR as a reason for pulling their products. Maybe the lawyers said "don't mention it". Who knows Jagex is NOT a transparent company.

    IF the client is writing and reading important files that contain information having to do with the function of the game, then it could indeed spawn new bugs that were not originally in the code if any of these config files get corrupted. It IS possible for bugs to form and evolve over time if IO is involved. Also you shouldn't assume that someone could hack the classic servers and not gain access to other Jagex's servers. Its entirely possible. But I do agree that it sucks they decided to end it.

    This is completely unfair. When runescape 2 came out we were given the option to keep our items on classic, or import then to runescape 2. All of my holiday items are on classic due to this decession. Will everything just disappear, or will they allow us what's rightfully ours to be transferred to the main game?
    Many of us worked years on these accounts, it's very unfair to just let all of this go. I believe compensation is in order, at mininum in resemblance to what happened when darkscape closed.
    I agree transferring items may destroy economy, but I believe there must be a solution that will make everyone happy.

    “Even if they were all botters”
    There comes a time when you’re forced to move on from a game you love, and it’s always sad to see it go. However, this statement further makes me agree with Jagex’s decision. RSC didn’t have a community. It had botters.

    • @avatarion
      @avatarion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      RSC had a massive community before they closed it off to members only. Then they started hiding the servers on the main site and kept newer players from trying it out. You can't blame RSC, the game had solid mechanics to be successful had Jagex not starved it out.

    • @simpleways2506

      @@avatarion this late but yes your 100 percent correct jagex wanted to kill off runescape classics to force players to rs2, as when rs2 came out only 68 percent of the player base jumped over, for jagex that wasn't good enough. So they started to hide runescape classics links to the servers on the main page so new players wouldn't see rsc as a option. Then they restricted who could make accounts and play the game which was the final nail in the coffin.

    Honestly I feel like it's more of an issue of the server classic is running on. The game itself has been exploited with packet edits, hence the bearded women but what if someone found something more dangerous? The game might show a backdoor into their systems and that could be catastrophic if exploited. Worse yet it might even be used to effect other players. The game is just too old to host on a network as it is now. They would need to isolate it and keep it from talking to any other devices. While that fixes issues on their end, it doesn't protect their player base.

I have to say, I had a RSC acount post 2007 and I wanted to play fair but botters would often ruin my experience either by botting in my location or just the fact that they gain an unfair advantage over me. But yeah, I haven't played RSC in many years now.

  • @Knuffeldraak
    @Knuffeldraak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Okay so pretty sure one doesn't know much about network management.
    A 'static' environment for an online game doesn't exist. You can't freeze the state of your game infrastructure, even if you don't update it, because protocols keep changing as well, and that can't remain unchanged or you'll not be able to contact at all.
    The real reason why RSC is closing, is because they need the money. Saying 'RSC makes ~2.000 dollars per month' isn't true, because people don't pay separately for RSC. This money already goes to the main game revenue, and the bot accounts just play on RSC (Because Rs3/OSRS bans don't apply to RSC, so basically, RSC is 'botany bay', the only zone botter accounts can go to after botting on RS3.

    Just a note from the technical side of why they may be closing it. While it's true that "code doesn't change" there can be bugs that appear due to many different things. It could be that they host the game on an old server machine. I've had software running for years without issue suddenly stop working because of a bug in windows scheduler that didn't run overnight. Backups randomly stop working, updates randomly don't run, maintenance randomly doesn't happen. There's so much stuff that could be required to keep the game running that is non-code based. The system NEEDS security / windows updates to avoid being hacked (it's internet accessible afterall) but those same systems get bricked from Windows updates. It's not just 1 server, they need a test server to run updates and verify everything. Pretty soon you end up with a list of updates you can and can't use and you have to filter through them all testing each one when it doesn't work. Every time you run updates / change something you need to run through a testing procedure to verify the original code still works. If they are using other old software (mysql?) in tandem those must also be tested. Old tech just doesn't talk to new tech in an office environment. If they are moving their third party programs to SaaS solutions (cloud) then suddenly this old server is a liability. Both from an infrastructure perspective and a security perspective. You also need to employ somebody who knows how to administer it.

    My oldest cousin started on Runescape classic way back in the day and got my other cousin and I into RS2 on release. I got into it at that time and have played with varying degrees of intensity over the years. If one day (hopefully long down the road) OSRS gets shut down I'll build my own private server at home for the nostalgia. Not a copy hosted online but one for me. The ULTIMATE Iron man.

      MagmaPants Nothing has changed for years on RSC. Servers slowly getting random bugs like mobs becoming unattackable or blocking paths, but you just hop worlds if you come across something and keep playing. Even the dragonstone problem wasn't that major imho because there's no new accounts coming in and high levels already had as many as they needed. Jagex could have shut down RSC in 2016 or even 2006 for the reasons they gave here.

    I wonder if we can get some kind of poll like how oldschool was to be brought back, just to get a general idea of how many people would still want something like this.. rather than just cutting it off :\
    iIunderstand the other stuff like fun orb but i don't think from a community standpoint that you should kill the roots of the main game.
    I wonder if a private server like that really old 2006 private server will pop up and try to replicate rs1, but like you said jagex is greedy and they would take something like that off the market if they found out it had potential..
    I love the idea of making rs1 a single player game, just the genuine facts like how paul's mom is making bacon and that became the sound of cooking really make the game feel like something a little closer to home rather than some development teams filters coming into play.
    Sad to see the end of an era, but maybe we will see a return in the future; in one shape or another.

    The moment you said RSC only made 2000 a month, they should have shut it down years ago from a business perspective. They were kind enough to keep a game mode and servers open to only like 100 people. They should have shut it down ages ago. But people only cry about toys when someone says they can T have it anymote

    in my opinion, runescape classic should be either...
    A. Open-sourced.
    B. f2p using a dedicated server system (players hold their own servers) that stores player data using SQLite.
    or C. both.

    It's hard to read these comments here and still give a damn about the game. Watching people argue OSRS vs RS3 is like watching people argue over Xbox and PlayStation. Who the fuck cares? Both platforms and both games benefit from the other group being there. Just appreciate the fact that players of both games are supporting the company running your preferred version of RuneScape.

    Whatever the specific reason is, I think we can all agree it comes down to money in some form. whether it's them trying to trim down the fat of their portfolio for investors, protecting some sort of vulnerability they fear would somehow effect the playerbase and cause lawsuits, or just not wanting the few resources still being put into it "wasted".
    It's the end of an era and I'm sad to see it go, even if I didn't play.

      I'm just gonna copy and paste this off another reply:
      Just a brief breakdown, back in I believe 2013 when the OSRS servers were being polled, 449k voted for OSRS servers to be returned. You would've gotten a small team for development, $5 more in membership charges, basic maintenance, a chance to get any form of anti-bot updates and no polls for future content.
      Instead of all that, simply because a lot of people completely uninterested in the game still decided to vote for those who were interested to benefit, Jagex decided to have update polls, anti-bot upgrades and not add an extra $5 to play OSRS. Also although unmentioned on the poll link, it's not a small team assigned to dealing with OSRS it is it's own development team.
      Basically, because of the support from the thousands of RS3 players with 0 interest in OSRS as well as people that simply don't care about the game anymore, you have servers that don't cost extra to enjoy while also having gotten more then originally promised.
      To add, the membership cost is the exact same for access to both games, so simply having let's say 20k players more doesn't mean OSRS is the one providing more for the company. To add onto that point, bots in RS3 are significantly more rare then OSRS. Sure OSRS has a bigger player base, but a LOT of that is bots. The gold is worth more to RWT, it's easier to get away with botting, it's easier for bots to function on OSRS, etc. I'm fairly positive you could go to nearly any bot hot spot on OSRS, then go to the same spot on RS3 and find next to none.
      Now one last point, not only does RS3 and OSRS share a membership cost making it that they both support each other on relatively equal terms not counting the thousands of bots constantly online which likely does more harm then good. But RS3 also has MTX which I'm sure brings in a LARGE portion of the companies income/profit and considering it's only in RS3, it's safe to assume RS3 brings in significantly more profit then OSRS ever will.
      So uh, you know. No it's not, "Kinda funny how old school rs is Jagex's future." It's kinda funny how the same version of the game people like you consistently talk shit about is the only reason the game continues to exists while also having many of the people who helped people like you avoid a larger membership cost.
      But hey, feel free to start a petition to get RS3 and OSRS split into different subscriptions. I know RS3 will be fine without the people unwilling to pay for both versions of the game thanks to MTX, but I don't know if I could say the same about OSRS losing I'd guess around at the absolute minimum 1/3rd of its income.

    RS Classic shuts down on my birthday. As a veteran of RS who started in RuneScape class (previously was known as just RuneScape) it's one hell of a birthday. Now I never realized they're shutting down ace of spades and chronicles? I closed beta tested chronicles, as well as transformers universe, but ace of spades was bought out from an open source project, so if they are shutting it down, they're making a mistake.

    If they never shut down the rsc f2p servers, then classic would still be booming. Rsc pking was intense and a totally different experience compared to the main game. A private server admin said he made 100k off selling items and subscriptions, so the money was there. Jagex isnt loyal to their fanbase like the fans are loyal to the game. Thats why rs is dead now. World 1/2 isnt even full 24/7 like it used to. Many people have said that if rsc opened f2p servers again private servers wouldnt exist.

    "I wanna see maxed accounts so i bot..." not a valid reason. If they truly enjoyed RSC they would work their ass off just like the rest of us. I'm sad to see RSC go, but botters did ruin the experience for me when I played it.

    • @ade8890
      @ade8890 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Not true. Just because they don't play the game in the same fashion as you does not indicate a lack of genuine enjoyment. Their enjoyment of the game can come from the history they've had with the game, the sub-community they are currently apart of, or whatever else. The valid reason for botting is that it isn't against the rules since rules no longer became enforced. I'm sure people like Eraserhead truly enjoyed RSC more than you, despite him deciding to bot for specific goals/reasons. In fact, one can even say that because the RSC experience was ruined for you in the first place, that you in fact don't enjoy rsc as much as they do. And there would be no genuine metric to discern between the two interpretations.
      In short, this is subjective. And trying to pass off your subjective opinion as an objective metric to deem the "true" subjective preferences of others is silly.

    • @glitchy7599
      @glitchy7599 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Botting is a cheat, If you truly want to experience any game, You are going to work for it, Botting your way up is not a way to enjoy the game.

    I agree with what you say about the bugs "issue." That's BS. Like you said, code doesn't decay over time. It's not like RuneScape is like a car that decays on its own if it's not maintained. And if they're using the same infrastructure, I see no reason why they can't fix any bugs that do come up. If anything, this should be the most patched, stable release of RuneScape. It's definitely because of cutbacks or something, like you say. They simply don't want to devote any time to maintaining RuneScape Classic any longer.
