- DISCLAIMER: This video does not cover the complete history of Runescape classic (1998-2018) this video took much longer than I had initially expected, and would release another video covering the rest of it that is something you guys would want.
This video covers and focuses on the updates Runescape received and the reaction to these updates from 1998-2002, most of this information was obtained through various sources: Runescape Classic Wiki, July the history guy, Runescape website, Darkscape Wiki, and the Runescape documentary.

@@Merkabist we trained fire making but there was no purpose. we thought it might be used to change cooking quality. I started playing in 2001. there was not much on the map it was just fishing in lumbering and lots of talk about the free for all pk had stopped few months before I started

Amazing video. I’ve watched many videos about the history of runescape and they don’t have nearly any info on runescape classic or go in depth on it. Definitely want the rest of the history, good work! I’d watch an hour long video on this.

should do 2004-2007, then 2007-2010, and so on. I miss the old days of childhood playing RSC. When Falador, Varrock, Lumbridge would actually be filled. When all those old nostalgic areas actually had purpose.
That's the thing I miss most while playing RS3. RS3 is like a ghost town when compared to old RS2 videos.

Thank you so much for the nostalgia. I can remember being top 300 with level 81 cook, it was an insane feet at the time as I had to click one piece of food at a time lol.
So originally the only thing you could put in your bank was coins? That means that ultimate ironman is the true way runescape was meant to be played

2D Runescape : you guys have no idea what it felt like to lose full rune and a rune 2 hander back in these days. hahahahahaha it made me rethink my life. I moved onto Diablo 2 LoD after this. I still remember the battle, went through 3 strength pots, and a full inventory of lobbies, lost to a guy with full rune and a rune kite shield. I almost made it back out of the wilde to save myself, but he got a massive 23 hit on me. My rune 2 handed sword was trucking him for almost 29 damage which was very good back in the day. But to no avail, his defense spec beat my strength spec. Man, I miss my strength Pure monk. He was such a boss. So many great memories in runescape 2D. strength Pures just dominated the scene, the defense pure got me though. fuck.

Frankly, seeing this footage of rsc is dope, i didn't even know all this stuff has been released for so long and I'm only doing most of the quests and stuff for the first time in the last couple years lol
I say go 2003-2010 then 2011-2018 for the videos. This is easily a three video topic because modern scape is very different from 2003-2010 scape. The three videos will allow you to go into as much detail as this video and I enjoy the detail you're giving!

I've been watching old rs1 videos to try and pinpoint when Ibfirst started playing. Best I can judge is sometime between the OG bunny ear drop event, and the scythe drop event. - But that also might have been just the account I actually ended up progressing.

Seriously didn't realize how earlier I was playing runescape in it's development since I was a kid when it was happening but I was JUST before or after the wilderness was introduced because I remember the pumpkin and christmas crackers but never being able to freely attack in the world or having an option to do so(but heard rumors about it during classic days)
When I joined I remember people complaining about how new this wilderness was and blah blah how you could fight openly before it

I started playing in November of 2001. I was in 7th grade. I still have my original Runescape account, though I prefer to play Old School Runescape now. And yes, I have a blue party hat.

A fun video idea might be to look at the transition from RS Classic to RS2 in 2004, though I can’t find any primary source videos of 2004 RS. There’s a video claiming to be footage of the 2004 beta; *RuneScape Beta Footage January 2004 NEW* but the comment section states it’s fake due to having a 2007 windows vista cursor.
There’s an archived post on the RS website regarding the move to RS2; *RS2 LAUNCHED!* on March 29, 2004. Some interesting notes from the post;
- they copied all player stats to both games
- they moved all RSC items to RS2, resetting all RSC accounts to 0 items
- they said a temporary webpage would be introduced shortly, though which you could move items between games

I remember I used to play it in the morning before walking to middleschool. I'm almost 32 now lol.
Same time line for me. Started in 6th grade, turning 30 in a couple months. I miss this game so much lol
34. Life was so good staying until 4 am grinding mining. Met so many cool people. RS was such a part of my childhood.

Oh man I remember all of those world drops including Bunny ears and Scythe which I think was the last item to drop before rs2 came along, both were non tradeable.
if I remember, I missed bunny ears so I got on all excited on Halloween to get another S00PER RARE VALUABLE DROP and then bam it was the scythe and non tradeable. Don't even remember what character has that scythe

I remember my friend paying for membership by sending money via mail to the devs back in 2002 when it was first added. I was so jealous because my dad believed it was a scam and wouldn't let me send them money. In retrospect I wouldn't have known enough english to make much use of the membership

Hans who walks around the castle in Lumbridge will tell you exactly how many days your account has been active. If you play the EoC version you will get a veteran cape with a cool emote. I started in 2001 and have the same account.

You used to be able to play classic if you were a member but they got rid of it but im sure you can find some private server online somewhere
Hey dude idk if you'll see this but check out Open RSC, it's an open-source RSC preservation project that works with RSC+(think RuneLite for Classic) and has a mobile app. Usually 20-50 people online at a time, but I've seen over 100 on at a time before.

Before certificates there was no way to stack those items, but yes, it was a PITA until bank notes were introduced.
Runescape 1 was the best. The newer ones ruined it but considering how many tens of thousands of people still play the 2007 version and the latest one for some reason.. it's better.

Brother and I grew up playing this back in the early 2000s. Would get home from school and play it with your mates. You'd be at school talking about it with your friends "hey are you getting on runescape tonight". Loved it.

Skilling may have been the motor of RSC, but pking was its heart and soul. RS2 just wasn’t right... I didn’t mind the graphics, but the many skills involved in pking were dumbed down.
When Jagex decided to make RSC p2p only, while simultaneously neglecting the servers, felt like a slap in the face.
I play private classics servers from time to time now, and the pking is still fun.

The best version of Runescape. Game developers usually ruin their games by updates. graphics might become better but you loose the feeling for it. Runescape should have stayed as the graphics in this video. I d definetily play it and pay for membership. I did games like Tibia also in the old days but even Tibia,along with WoW got ruined by the updates. there is however coming a WoW classic by this month. and RS Oldschool I did try but as I said, I prefer this version of RS the best!
