CREAKING Shimano XT (SLX, XTR) 12 speed Micro Spline freehub after 5000 km

  • Two years ago the rear hub (Shimano FH-M8110-B) of my Merida One-Twenty started creaking. I posted a video with the creaking and some general guides on solving it. In a while the creaking came back. I posted a new video on hub overhaul and greasing. At around 3500 kms (~2200 miles) along with regreasing I had to replace a worn spacer. And now, after 5000 kms (~3000 miles) the hub is DEAD and requires complete replacement. I have to agree Shimano has failed with this hub type.

    Mine has had the same issue very early in it's life. The bike store said it's fine and they couldn't reproduce the creaking. I took it apart, grease was grey, plastic gasket demolished. It's a very poor design, very disappointing for XT level stuff. There should be a recall for this. We both got scammed, total design flaw.

    If this is common, it should be a recall. It's just not acceptable for a premium manufacturer to supply such a flawed design.
    I did notice the new spacers are made from a different type of plastic and are now black, but realistically I can't see that affecting the wear on the hub as shown here.
    I'm on my second freehub body in 300 miles due to water ingress killing the bearings. If it happens again after such low mileage, I'll swap in a DT Swiss 350.

    • @ZavyalovCycling
      @ZavyalovCycling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Ben! It should be a recall, but Shimano clearly prefers to ignore this. The “black” spacer could be an XTR version. They are indeed made from a bit tougher black plastic and have a separate part number. All the best, but my guess - you’ll end up with a DT Swiss 😀

    Shimano recalls Dura-Ace and Ultegra models due to a fault that can cause the crank arm to separate from the main crank. 2.8 million units are affected globally. The models were manufactured between 1 June 2012 and 30 June 2019. They ignored this for years so no surprises that they are ignoring the design problems with these hubs. I have an XTR 9100 pedal axle that has just sheared and the UK importers (Madison) just fobbed me off. I see more and more bikes being sold with SRAM components.

    • @ZavyalovCycling
      @ZavyalovCycling  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fobbed off even though the UK must be one of the best countries to claim a warranty! Imagine what happens in most countries where customers rights are way less protected 😂 And the icing on the cake. SRAM owners are not a tiny bit happier. At least, all of them whom I spoke to 🤪

    Im running this for almost 2 years now but I dont have as high of a mileage. Had to service a few times and replaced the spacer once but no damage on the teeth as of now. I currently have the 28H XT version and I want to get the SLX M7110 to build a new wheel because I really like the fact that it is a silent hub and isnt instant engagement like onyx. That is the only reason why I still use it but I heard the new versions do have the buzzing sound now so Im not sure if I should get the SLX.... Can't find much details from shimano, only forums online and youtube videos

    more i watch your videos the more i wonder why they jumped to a totally new freehub design. the xtr 9010 hub was very good as were all before it. the new 9111 hub isn't going anywhere near the miles the older ones did. i did my first re grease on an xtr 9111b hub after watching one of your other videos. 2k miles and good for now but you can see how the whole hub is designed to wear. there are still xtr 950 hubs from the 90s with 20k+ miles rolling fine. i guess shimano joined the throw away forced obsolescence bike club. the last xtr hub i had was the 9010 which used cone/cup, HG titanium driver and were rolling great when sold at 5k miles

      Have the same questions. Could be marketing driven. “Less weight” and “quicker engagement” must be selling better, especially with new bikes. How many customers consider five year durability potential now? 🤪

    Unfortunately I have the same issue, I should have done some research before getting an XT hub, I figured since it is XT, it should be perfect; I have everything XT (drivetrain and brakes) and no issues, I started hearing the creaking I did the research and found this :( I service the hub and works for few kilometers ~10k and the starts again, thipically when you start putting heavy load (climbs)...... please stay away from XT hubs...

  • @muzzleray

    I've had the same issue, it started first after I put a new rim on it (36 hole trucky rim very tuff) so after spending $400 on a rim the hub melts down and can't seem to find another 36 hole hub to suit the new rim, that hub is a thing of nightmares

    My Shimano slx microspline freehub failed after a year, doing the same thing as your hub. First the creaking under load as we tried to troubleshoot the squeaking source. Shimano should have warranty replaced it. I luckily had bought a 28 spoke fh-mb510-b hub, as the dealer didn't have one. Shimano parts are difficult to find! I can't find another one. So eventually I'll probably just put on a new Shram rim/freehub as that's about the most cost effective solution. Shame on Shimano. I just found 2 of the spacers online, after much searching, having to pay costly shipping. US vendors just don't have the Shimano parts in stock. It's no wonder Specialized switched to Shram!

      Shimano retail stockage is a topic for a separate video, true 😀 In Europe, the situation is a bit better, I guess, but still you have to sometimes dig deep just to get some common brake pads. Or even order from Aliexpress. Let alone such thing as the free hub spacer 😂

    Hola.

      Hi. There are two ways. 1. Fast and cheap, but still Shimano 😀 FH-MT410 or 510. It’s a simplified version of your dead hub with pawl ratchet instead of these nightmare spacers. You will likely keep your spokes. 2. Reliable and expensive. DT Swiss or Hope hub. Plus you’ll likely need new spokes.

    I had the same problem, I bought the bike new after 2 months 😂, started creaking, got another freehub and after 3 months it did it again, and the bearings got destroyed, the micro spline is the worst freehub ever , it has design flaws , the bearings always give up , and I didn’t get warranty for both of freehubs , I’m never going with micro spline, I will get a xd it’s amazingly better, and instal a kcnc or garbaruk cassette

    The previous design had the pawls stuffed into the freehub and only xtr was reliable over many km. Now this new design is a total dumpster fire. I didn't buy one because I took a look at the diagrams and decided it should be avoided. Meanwhile other designs like DT or CK last forever with no problems. Consumers Beware. Don't trust a company for anything. Look at the design yourself before purchasing.
