  • Has your fresh 12 speed Shimano XT hub started producing nasty creaking sounds? Mine has, and it seems more and more owners of these new Micro Spline family Shimano hubs come across the same problem. I have XT, but you might come across the same problem with SLX or XTR from this family of hubs. Luckily, in most cases there’s an easy solution. The video will help to understand if you have this problem either or a different one.

    I was getting crazy with the creaking! As stated in the video it just needed greasing as it was bone dry.
    One thing: if you by any chance pull the free hub apart it’s pretty easy putting it together as long as the parts are not damaged.
    (For some reason one free hub flang was damaged so the cassette was stuck. I had to pull it with force which in turn pulled the free hub apart)

    • @vladimirzavyalov
      @vladimirzavyalov  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@patrickspapens5497 Shimano manual (link in the description) will guide you thoroughly. Just some tips. After you remove the cassette, you need to remove a hub cap. Ideally, with a 17mm cone wrench. It might seem threaded, but it’s not. Just grab the side splines and pull it. It goes easy if done right. Next - a snap ring. Matching pliers would help. Now you are free to remove the freehub body. The sealing gasket will slide off together with it. You might want to keep the freehub pointing your ceiling while doing so. This would leave the hub springs perfectly inside the wheel without any need to reassemble them. Shimano suggests a special tool to press the gasket back in when you are done. But I did fine without the tool, just take care and evenly press it back. Check the comments here if you are not sure what grease to use.

    Thanks for the video and documenting the solution. Just for the record to Shimano (in case they’re reading)... I’m also having the same problem with the XT freehub. I have done 11 rides with these wheels, and on the 11th (today) the freehub started creaking like crazy! What a mistake to assume that I bought a reliable wheelset. Shimano should do a recall on this POS designed freehub.
    Update: I applied the lubricration as instructed in the latest dealer manual, and the noise didn’t appear on a 58km trip today.
    I also get the feeling that it is coasting a lot more “truly silent” than before.

      Hi, Charles! Thanks for your report. Shimano are hardly reading this particular thread, but be sure they are well aware of the problem. Otherwise there wouldn't be special service bulletins and updates on greasing in the service manual. A general recall would be fair, but too expensive, so they won't go for it. I am still dealing with this issue. Defective freehub outer cartridge bearing (bone dry, no grease). Only creaks under pedaling load, so I was thinking it was something with the chain, or some other creak. Started ~200 km after I bought the bike brand new. Finally I took it all apart and the difference between the two freehub bearings was obvious. I repacked it with grease and that fixed it... for a little while. Then I repacked it again. Had the same problem with same hub (after 1k), and even I thought that was bottom bracket problem, + weird fluctuating noise on a free wheeling. Sent to warranty, got new hub, no explanation why, well this seems the answer. And here we go again after only 500km on a new hub :). Atleast I got the answer thanks to you. Hi, you need to take out the freehub body, but you can keep the springs inside. Just keep the wheel horizontal and work on your hub from above. The hub mech might seem a bit complicated with no prior experience, but actually there’s no rocket science there. Once you spend some time with it and the Shimano service manual, you’ll be able to disassemble and assemble it back easily. Don’t worry!

      Even Micro Spline DT240 has different inner construction to Shimano. Therefore you cannot simply apply Shimano experience to it. I wouldn't be surprised if a similar connection between the hub and the body creaked on DT as well, but you surely need a proof from an owner of your hub type.

      @vladimirzavyalov  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Cris! These hubs can be both ratcheting or silent under freewheeling. Some mech inside chooses this, and you never know what it depends on. Sometimes it ratchets for the first 2 seconds of your freewheeling, then goes silent for 5, and then goes ratcheting again. In this video it has decided to ratchet all the time 😀 Hope you solve the creaking and enjoy the hub!

Before the instruction was "just a little bit of grease on the spacer legs". My XT hub is still perfect with just that tiny greasing and shows no reasons to reopen it. However, if you have to grease the spacer for the first time, you may be pretty generous with the amount of grease applied now.

    I hate this issue. My 2020 Norco Sight VLT C2 E-Bike came with XT rear hub, and 12 spd XT drivetrain. If the drivetrain were SRAM (which I know, doesn't make sense) I would simply upgrade the hub/possibly entirely new rear wheel. But since the bike came with a fairly high end drivetrain that happens to be Shimano, I'm kinda stuck down this path. I've found that the re-greasing method lasts me about six weeks. And I typically ride around 40 miles (60 Km) per week. So I'd say the hub needs servicing roughly every 160-200 miles to mitigate the horrible creaking noise.

And just like you, I also hear weird noise whenever I stop from a long spin as well as when I back pedal. As of now, it only happens once in a while but I fear it could get worse in time and eventually, the hub can get damaged beyond repair. Just a heads-up I have gone through 2 of these hubs and both had the same issues. As soon as you take the hub apart it's hit or miss if it likes the way you out it back even if done to spec. Mine both resolved after taking apart but failed again shortly after. I ended up buying 2x hope wheels with pro4 hubs and gave up on these new Shimano. Take one apart and see how unessicerily complicated they are with a wealth of plastic and rubber parts!! Terrible design

      First one came laced from factory on my Saracen Ariel on raceface arc wheels. Second I purchased individually and had laced by Local bike shop. Both failed exactly the same way. Started with creak and then lead to complete failure. The whole sylence thing seems a good thing but when you look at how it's all together it's terrible. Plastic toothed ring inside a metal ratchet is bad. Also I think I counted around 20 parts just inside the freehub that's insane! If yours go I highly recommend taking it apart and then complaining to Shimano. I saw a post with a guy who had this and Shimano sent him 2 hubs, special grease and couple other parts.
