  • Hello friends, today I am cleaning the EGR on my 2017 Ram 3500. I try to clean it between 70 to 100,000 miles. This is a easy process and is a good preventive maintenance cleaning. Have a Blessed Day Friends! Justin

My truck is at 68,000 miles right now. Just did the CCV today
Wondering if I should try and do this in the next few weeks?

Its not a hard job. Now I will say it probably isn't necessary right now. Mine wasn't to bad.

Might I ask how many miles you had on the truck when you did this? Also, lots of towing/ highway driving? I’m at 125k with mine with lots of towing and 75% highway driving. I don’t notice any of the symptoms of a dirty egr. Just curious if it’s necessary. Thank you.

I think this was the second time I did this but about 75-80,000 miles since the last time. It wasn't bad at all. Mine is 100% long highway miles 250-400 miles between stops. I just do mine as preventive maintenance. Hope this helps. Have a Blessed Day Friend! Justin

Out of curiosity, is this the same thing as the check engine light that is supposed to come on around 60k miles? It basically tells you to take to a dealer for an EGR clean. If so, this a $1200 dollar service to do what you just demonstrated?

    • @homegrowncountryhomeplace

The 60,000 mile service light is to replace the crankcase filter. The EGR and EGR cooler is based on what year model you have. Your owner manual should give some detail on when to have that service done. I think it is usually around 75-100,000 miles. Have a Blessed Day Friend! Justin

did your truck consume radiator fluid prior to this repair,? if so how much?

When my EGR cooler went bad, it was used probably 4 gallons of coolant from Washington back home to MS. So if your loosing coolant and don't see a leak, EGR cooler could be bad. Your EGR crossover tube will be wet to pasty instead of black dry soot. Have a Blessed Day Friend. Justin
