I struggle with depression and my mother always used to sing this to me. It was like her special message. it’ll be two months since she passed this week. This is the first time I’ve listened to it since her passing. I miss her so much. And I hear these words as if they were her own. I love you mama
As a child I always wondered why he was so sad about not getting a golden ticket. As an adult it goes so much deeper, losing sight of your dreams, feeling like a failure, feeling like you're letting everyone down and battling the overwhelming feeling of sadness. That line "When the world get heavy never pitter pat'em Up and at'em boy" so simple but so powerful. I don't know how anyone can find it boring.
When I was a kid I used to fast forward this song on VHS cos I thought it was boring. As an adult it's what keeps me going when I'm down. Funny how things change. This film is pure magic.
I'd do the same thing! It was so slow and boring when I was a kid. As an adult I was basically in tears the first time I heard it. I grew up with a single mom and she'd always have this "hope" like Charlie's mom did and she'd get me out of my "funk". She still does that for me today and I do that for my students (I'm a school counselor) based on what she did for me.
I grew up poor, and my mother always said something to cheer me up when I was a Lil guy. She was the sun. I will always love her that. she made my day at the end was full of hope in fucked up world.
Indeed, Justin. It's like Rudolph '64 & '98 and Superman '78 & Returns '06 and Robin Hood '38 & 2010 and plenty of other comparisons. As a bit of saying goes, you can't compare Roger Moore to Sean Connery.
For me, this song is all about a mother looking way past her own woes and praying for her son in private- hoping and pouring her heart even though he can’t see nor hear her. She’s worn, shabby, and tired, yet sees a future for her boy far away from where she has ended up. It’s not just about cheering up- it’s about realizing the beauty and preciousness within yourself that your mother sees every day.
For me it's incredible how people notice the message given about the boy, and don't think about the mother's situation. In the story, I imagine that she has barely reached 40, and has to work all day to support 4 sick elderly people and a child. But even so, after a tiring day of work, he finds the strength to cheer up his son. It is wonderful.
As a kid, I never fully appreciated this part so most of the time I would fast forward through it. As and adult I understand the value of it and I really like this song. It reminds me of how my mother always filled me with hope as a kid
Hi everyone. For 60 years I had the honor and privilege of being a studio singer. I sang both solo and in backup groups. I was blessed to meet and work with so many brilliantly talented people, one of whom was Leslie Bricusse who wrote the songs for Willy Wonka. I had supplied the singing voice for Samantha Eggar in Dr. Dolittle and that’s where I met Leslie and Anthony Newley. When Wonka was completed they were not happy with Diana Sowie’s singing so Leslie recommend I do it. It was very easy as she’s not on camera much so I didn’t have to match her that much. Mel Stuart the director was pleased and very complementary to me the day of the recording. I have to say I love it when I see comments like “angelic voice” here. Peace and blessings, Diana Lee, girl singer. PS Interesting to see how many people as kids fast forwarded this scene but grew into it as adults. I always thought it was a lovely song. RIP Leslie, thanks for your brilliance
I know a lot of people find this song boring, but for some reason this song always stuck with me ever since I was a child. I still get tears in my eyes whenever I listen to it. Probably a mix of impactful lyrics and nostalgia
I agree. Even as a small child watching this movie I always really enjoyed this song and scene. Charlie walking through the wet streets all melancholy, while his mother sings that sad melody. You can’t help but feel the nostalgia. Even tho my first viewing was as a young child in the 90s’ I could feel the deep 70s’ blues in that night time atmosphere along with the style of clothing and hair. It’s movies like this that make me feel like I was from another time, that’s how powerful nostalgia can be.
Watched this first time as an adult, I kid you not I tear up badly watching this scene on plane. The other passengers seemed to look at me weird for crying over an old movie lol
I always get teary eyed whenever I hear this song. It's so inspiring specially when charlie's mother said "your time will come, when you least expect it. .
“Just be glad you’re you” is so sad. Charlie’s mom knows that she herself will never escape poverty but Charlie is just starting life; he has a chance to be free.
Charlie gets the ticket because he “wanted it more than everyone”… that’s why it’s not sad. Also, Charlie’s mother escapes poverty b/c she did a great job raising her son.
@@geroldy4546 “it is a lucky man, very lucky man…who can relax in the luxury of his emotions”. Charlie is “blue” because he believes all the tickets are gone. Mother sings “you get blue like everyone but me, and grandpa Joe”… so enjoy your youth Charlie, Golden Ticket or not, (99 problems or not)… “just be glad you are you”. (No matter age, everyone still has a chance).
I've always appreciated the differences between Charlie and the other kids. He's this forlorn, downcast boy, almost sickly looking, who has a sense of self doubt which makes him so relatable and endearing. The other kids are so self absorbed, never wanting for anything, spoiled brats. It makes you feel for Charlie even more in this scene, seeing him wandering the streets, not realising how much he means to his family and losing hope that he can have something his heart desires.
You get blue like everyone But me and Grandpa Joe Can make your troubles go away Blow away, there they go... Cheer up, Charlie Give me a smile What happened to the smile I used to know Don't you know your grin has always Been my sunshine; Let that sunshine show... Love this song. I used to sing it to my son when he was a toddler. Ive found myself singing it to him again today ( he's a bit older now.) So had to play this song. His name is Charlie. Love you Charlie.
One of my favorite songs EVER! something about it is so pure. Love singing along with it too, I appreciate the vocal technique she had and it's easy to blend along.
According to Wikipedia, it's like they did with Zac Efron in High School Musical (his voice was apparently too high so they had a different guy sing for him). This was sung by a different person over her. I just found that out ironically on Friday when the actress who played her reportedly died
Hi thanks for giving me credit and for the compliments! Much appreciated. I was a studio singer for 40 years and was 26 when this was done. I had been Samantha Eggar’s singing voice in the musical version of Dr. Dolittle so Leslie Bricusse, who wrote that score and also the score for Wonka, recommended me to the director. It was not difficult to do, I just had to match her when she was on camera. I always loved the song.
This song always makes me cry. It is so sweet yet so bitter. You know that Charlie’s mom just wants her son to be happy, whether he gets the ticket or not. This also falls into the “person putting a brave face on a terrible situation” category. You know the mom just wants to break down into tears because of the state her family is in, but she has to be brave for her son so that he can be brave for the family
This song still makes me tear up. I never used to skip it. I guess, unlike some other kids, I related to what his Mum was saying and needed that same message. If anything, a little more as the years go by.
As a kid, I always used to be obsessed with the old man smoking on his own in the cafe (1:28) My sister and I used to make up stories about him - who he was. Why he was in the cafe alone so late at night
Lmao! So cool! My brother and I do the same thing. We'd pause movies and shows at random times and make up stories, theories. They usually make no sense, but we ALWAYS get a great laugh! We've made some amazing inside jokes, too. We'd go outside and roleplay as those little background characters sometimes.
I bought this movie from a 5 buck rack because of the wonderful lessons this movie provides on how to be a decent human being. Loved the dialogue, songs, and imagination behind this wonderful classic flick!
Can't believe people work jobs like the mom is to support her family, and all she wants all day is to have her son in a happier place instead of thinking of the hell she's in.
Still one of my favorites from this movie, my mother and even my grandpa were always the people best in my life at getting a smile out of me with their jokes or positivity... this song has a special place for me and I never stop smiling even when i dont want to
Funny how this point in the movie was insignificant in the past for me but has now morphed into a memetic hazard, I swear everytime I hear it im entranced on that living room floor in 2004 again 😂 ❤
This is one of the movies that made my childhood I still watch this , the wizard of Oz, and any other movies that bring back my childhood I miss the 90s and early 2000s
Actually that is my singing voice so thank you! They were not happy with her performance so, since I had previously worked with Leslie Bricusse on Dr Dolittle (Leslie wrote all these lovely Wonka songs) he recommended me to go in and replace her track. It was done after the film was completed
I love that song! I remember watching this on T.V. back in 1970 and loving it because I had already read both books by Roald Dahl Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
As a child this was one of my favorite parts because somehow I related to Charlie. My mom was also a hard worker and we didn't always have it like that to spend it on things we wanted.
True but in the end Charlie's grandpa believed in Charlie's will get a golden ticket for the factory. They both had the same hopes and dreams to go there Also he gave up on the tobacco and use the money that Charlie gave him to buy a Wonka bar Sadly no golden ticket but came later
I love this so much, one of my fav parts of the movie. My grandma used to sing it and I never told anyone that.. then I met a man in my early 20’s who tried cheering me up one day using this song and replacing the name Charlie with my own name and it’s just one of the many reasons why I still love that man today, 20 yrs later… anytime I think of this song I immediately think fondly of him and how it always will be reserved just for him.
To me this song this song meant a lot because how i grew up there house reminds me of my grandmas house because she can’t afford to get everything fixed so I felt I understood because he was poor and wanted a once in a life time experience his family never got too experience many families don’t have money to go places the songs telling you everything will be ok
I feel sorry for some people who don't like this song or part of the movie. My mother sang to me as a baby and kid, some of my earliest memories. A lot of people have never had that. Charlie's mother is a hard worker, doesn't have a social life of her own or seemingly a man friend, and yet still finds an opportunity to give him a positive note in life.
To those saying this song is pointless definitely isn’t a fan Don’t you remember what happened to the man who got everything he wanted? He lived happily ever after.
This actress also played the old lady character in fallout 3 who you have to find a violin for, and when you do she constantly plays classical music over the radio for you
You get blue like everyone but me and grandpa Joe can make your troubles go away Blow away There they go Cheer up Charlie Give me a smile What happened to that. Smile I used to know Don’t you know ur grin has always been my sunshine Let that sunshine show Come on Charlie no need to frown Deep down you know the world is still your toy When the world gets heavy never pit a Pat em up and at em boy Someday sweet as a song Charlie’s lucky day will come along till that day you got to stay in strong Charlie up on top is right where you belong look up Charlie you’ll see a star just follow it and keep your dream in view pretty soon the sky is gonna clear up Charlie cheer up Charlie do Cheer up Charlie just be glad your you.
Thank you! I love hearing that as it’s actually my voice. I am retired now from a blessed 60 year career as a studio singer. I had worked previously with Wonka’s songs composer Leslie Bricusse on Dr Dolittle so he recommended me to go in and replace her track. It makes me feel really good when I get compliments
Think about the importance of the song in context with him and his feelings. He wants to give his family a better life, not his mom scrounging around for money for him, and then being forced to live in a 1-room bedroom. He wants more for his family and he tries to help his mom out by getting himself a job. So, this comes at a time where he’s down and feeling like life couldn’t get any better. It’s her statement to him to keep his head high.
I don’t really get why people hate the song… What I understand is that she is singing about how he may have a rough life right now, but if he keeps a strong eye for his dreams in the future, they’ll come soon.
When I see this scene I think of my mother who lives in Illinois 800 miles away from me, and I know no matter how far she is she's always sending good spirits, just as Charlie's mother is even though they arent in the within the same reach.
I hated this song as a kid but it hits different at this age, seeing your parental figures age/pass on and having kids in your life that you want to leave a better world for.
This is my favorite song in the whole movie! When I am down I come to this song. It’s a very comforting song. I think as a child, (and still as an adult) I identified heavily with Charlie. It always felt like my mother singing to me. A beautiful scene and song

I always wondered why she didn't sing the song to him. She waits until he leaves, and then she sings the song to him, but he is not there to hear it. Who gives advice to someone who isn't there to hear it?

I was born in 86, and those are my childhood movies too.
But this came out before you were born.
Same I still have the VHS :)
who is here after john mulaney's rant about it
Mitran Khadivi 🖐
Me 😂
Hi, yes. Me.
Mitran Khadivi ✋🏼
we're clearly all just the true john mulaney fans 😤
I’m singing this as Mrs. Bucket in the Jr. Play. This is such a great song to be singing. Cheer up anyone like Charlie!
Julia C sameee
beautiful, charlies mum has little money but her heart is rich with love and thats worth more than money.
RIP - what a beautiful voice.
Actually that is my singing voice so thank you! They were not happy with her performance so, since I had previously worked with Leslie Bricusse on Dr Dolittle (Leslie wrote all these lovely Wonka songs) he recommended me to go in and replace her track. It was done after the film was completed
This song hits different when you have no mum or dad around to comfort you as a child❤
I'm so sorry my friend 😢
I love that song! I remember watching this on T.V. back in 1970 and loving it because I had already read both books by Roald Dahl
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
She prayed for her son, and he got his blessing
As a child this was one of my favorite parts because somehow I related to Charlie. My mom was also a hard worker and we didn't always have it like that to spend it on things we wanted.
my favorite song from this film
Charlie should have taken his poor hard working mom to the Wonka factory.
True but in the end
Charlie's grandpa believed in Charlie's will get a golden ticket for the factory.
They both had the same hopes and dreams to go there
Also he gave up on the tobacco and use the money that Charlie gave him to buy a Wonka bar
Sadly no golden ticket but came later
The odd thing about the repertoire is the songs get better with age and repetition . They come alive, timeless is appropriate
I always listen to this song when I'm down. I love the quote "Just be glad your you". Originals are always the best :)
Only ppl who have been through it can appreciate this song 😢
Exactly
Amen, my friend.
This is such a sweet story oh my god😭
This is one of the best scenes from this movie! Family is everything.
I sing this for my Greyhound. His name is Charlie and he has the saddest eyes in the world.
Shaun Haynam I sing it to my dog too! She’s a black lab/pointer named charlie
Even sadder than Jenna Marbles' Kermit? :')
Shaun Haynam, aw, nugget.😊☺️😰
I sing it to my brother's sheltie mix who is also named Charlie! I actually play this for him when he has seizures & it calms him so well!
s'Carrie Cemetery'76 you three are absolute legends for doing this
Even as a kid this was my favorite song in the movie
No that's not okay
Pete Jones: don't worry I like it it means a lot to me
Toast to the hard working mother's of the world❤❤❤
This movie has many wonderful songs, this one is one of my favorites ❤
I just sent this to my 36 year old son who is having a bad week. We used to watch this movie together when he was a kid.
Makes me cry every time!
Screw all the haters, this is a great song
Why in the world would people hate this song?
@@romeosantos3261 Beats me! A lot of people do though and it’s sad
Most underrated song in the movie
This will never get old.
To those saying this song is pointless definitely isn’t a fan Don’t you remember what happened to the man who got everything he wanted? He lived happily ever after.
Charlie truly has a heart of Gold he is the loneliest person who is the kindest of all
This actress also played the old lady character in fallout 3 who you have to find a violin for, and when you do she constantly plays classical music over the radio for you
You get blue like everyone but me and grandpa Joe can make your troubles go away
Blow away
There they go
Cheer up Charlie
Give me a smile
What happened to that. Smile I used to know
Don’t you know ur grin has always been my sunshine
Let that sunshine show
Come on Charlie no need to frown
Deep down you know the world is still your toy
When the world gets heavy never pit a Pat em up and at em boy
Someday sweet as a song Charlie’s lucky day will come along till that day you got to stay in strong Charlie up on top is right where you belong look up Charlie you’ll see a star just follow it and keep your dream in view pretty soon the sky is gonna clear up Charlie cheer up Charlie do
Cheer up Charlie just be glad your you.
RIP Diana Sowle. Thank you for teaching me the song that taught me to stay strong no matter what.
R.I.P. Diana Sowle (1930-2018).
Mrs Bucket has a voice like an angel.❤️
@@dianalee3059she’s dead dumbass try again
lovely song
awwww when she says "just be glad you're you..." what a sweet thing for a mother to say
This song is the most beautiful standard ever written since OVER THE RAINBOW. RIP Diana
Listening to this at work and my eyes are getting ass blasted with tears.
I still think of this song when I am upset...
why do people hate the song so much? It's so beautiful and the message is wonderful as well. There's literally nothing wrong with this song!
One of my all time favorite movies. Charlie and Wonka always make me cry 😭
Same here
Always being a music lover this song always stuck with me. He voice and rhyming rhythm caught my ear. This part makes you understand a parents love.
When I see this scene I think of my mother who lives in Illinois 800 miles away from me, and I know no matter how far she is she's always sending good spirits, just as Charlie's mother is even though they arent in the within the same reach.
My mom used to sing this song to me. I'll never be able to hear even the first note of this without breaking.
we always sing this to our kids when they are feeling down. xx
I love the lyrics in this song, sends such a beautiful & POWERFUL message ! ❤️
same about Mr. Wonka's (Gene Wilder's) gentle voice singing pure imagination
Why am I as a 30 something just blubbering my eyes out uncontrollably like Matt Damon in goodwill hunting at this song?
I hated this song as a kid but it hits different at this age, seeing your parental figures age/pass on and having kids in your life that you want to leave a better world for.
This is my favorite song in the whole movie! When I am down I come to this song. It’s a very comforting song. I think as a child, (and still as an adult) I identified heavily with Charlie. It always felt like my mother singing to me. A beautiful scene and song
I enjoy this movie when I was little and still do.
me too. it's still has the same magic from when I first heard it.
Yep still has that magic.
@Charlie Bank ugh not you guys
....
I cry every time when listen to this song
*Cheer Up, Charlie - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)*
*LYRICS:*
*Mrs. Bucket:* You get blue like everyone
But me and grandpa Joe can make your troubles go away
Blow away, there they go
Cheer up, Charlie
Give me a smile
What happened to the smile I used to know
Don't you know your grin has always been my sunshine
Let that sunshine show
Come on, Charlie no need to frown
Deep down you know the wrold still is your toy

Charlie's lucky day will come along
Till that day you've got to stay strong Charlie
Up on top is right where you belong
Look up, Charlie
You'll see a star
Just follow it and keep your dreams in view
Pretty soon the sky is going to clear up, Charlie
Cheer up Charlie, do
Cheer up Charlie
Just be glad you're you

Beautiful song that tears me up and touches my heart.
❤️ The intro is simply "Dreamy"
I think everyone used to fast forward this scene when we were younger, 35 years old and damn this makes me tear up now.
This song always makes me cry
That opening line always gets to me ❤
An son identifies with this song. And it makes him sad and usually fast forward through that song.. but absolutely great memories of this movies. . I myself, I know no one asked, feel the song is sad.. but speaks from a Mother’s heart ♥️
I always wondered why she didn't sing the song to him. She waits until he leaves, and then she sings the song to him, but he is not there to hear it. Who gives advice to someone who isn't there to hear it?
larrydirtybird You are...right now.
She existed outside of her mother role.
Cockyduty nonsense !!! Lol
Maybe its for all the Charlies in the audience ??
She was singing to us. ❤️❤️❤️
