Gene Wilder always seemed just about as sweet as they come, I remember when I went down a rabbit hole of interviews with him, admiring his humble, soft and loving nature. He seemed like such a different person than the many wild roles he played in comparison, just a quiet man who is peaceful and decidedly chose optimism, despite his life's tragedies. I remember being so sad when he passed away and my Mom sweetly saying that she hoped he was reunited with Gilda somehow. P.S. I just realized when I talked about Wilder "choosing optimism" that it 100% aligns with Conan's departure from NBC when he said right at the end of the last show, “Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism - it's my least favorite quality, and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen.” I guess the algorithm *does* know what its doing, cuz I definitely needed to be reminded to that today. Yes - you could tell he was truly star struck having him sitting right there in front of him. Conan had thoughtful questions and I think Gene appreciated that. I bet Conan was freaking out at the beginning when Gene was complimenting him so generously!!!😀
Conan talking and his questions are so generic, boring, and commonly known that Gene might as well have not have been there. All modern talk hosts are like this. There is no depth and constant rehashing of the same old gladhanding.
Gene lived in Stamford CT. a was often seen at a small local Italian grocer. On a few occasions I happened to see him in the store and cannot tell you how wonderful, kind and approachable he was. I never spoke with him but I noticed that every time someone approached him or introduce themselves or ask for an autograph or picture. He was always kind, gentle and accommodating. He was older and looked a bit frail, but he always had time to speak with people and fans. He was known as the kindest comedian... A real gentleman.
@@motorcitymanman7711 he was making a film with her. probably a lot of stress. we're not always the same people when we're working as we are when we're not. especially in the film industry. he was a professional, and probably took the film very seriously.
Such a class act. He was married to Gilda Radner. Gilda died of cancer. Towards the end she was in pain, and nauseated from the chemo. She snapped at a pizza delivery boy, a teenager. After Gilda took the pizza inside, Gene ran outside to apologize to the kid, and gave him a big tip. He later said that he will never forget the day Willy Wonka apologized to him and gave him a big tip.
I wish conan had shown more respect to gene. Perverse joke about the lap sitting. Trying too hard to showcase a genuine talent that needs no showcasing.
When I was 13, my best friend and I saw Young Frankenstein - it was the first movie we had seen in an actual theater. For a month after we saw it, we did lines from the movie back and forth, and proceeded to thoroughly crack ourselves up. We were both fans for life. Thanks for all the laughs, Gene - we love you!
The first time it came to the cinema in Scotland,it was like uhhh a black n white comedy movie, yeah right. For days after when ever we seen a horse we would shout FRAU BLOOKER,,,,,

I used to be a meter reader for a california utility company, and I had to read Gene Wilder's meter every month. Well, in the 8 years i read his meter, for about twenty times he was there at his house he knew I was coming and would be waiting for me after I walked up his driveway. This guy Mr. Wilder, would make the effort to walk out of the house and greet me BY NAME and ask me how my day was going and he did it with real sincerity too, i could tell. Our conversations only lasted about five minutes BUT... he conversed with me, a lowly meter reader ONCE a month I visited his house to read his meter and either he was too bored or he really cared about people in general.

Jacquelynn Richard prior who he talks about was an amazing comedian and actor that wilder and Mel brooks would consistently work with and write roles for back before it was commonplace
The hand hold at the end almost made my eyes tear up. Such sincerity and just genuine niceness. Gene Wilder, such a wonderful human being . I never met him or had a run in with him or anything. But he just seems like a genuinely wonderful person, apart from also being a timeless actor.
I swear Gene's voice has a crazy calming effect. He was so thoughtful and intent with what he said. I think his praise of Conan at the beginning was pretty genuine, too, even if understated. Genius recognizes genius. Miss that guy. Glad I found this. I'll have to check out his book.
When the time comes and Mel Brooks goes, the world will really be done. These guys were great, so much of today's "comedy" is forced. These were the originals.
Gene Wilder lost the love of his life, and the fact that he can say he's happier than he's ever been in his life really hits you. Maybe there's still hope for us all
Which saddens me a little- he's happier NOW than he was with Gilda?? I mean, that's fine and all, but a bit of a kick in the pants to those of us who loved her as well.
@@christinepellicane6689 He's clearly come to terms with it, and god knows he's had the time. Longing for those days you can no longer have doesn't do anyone any favors. Cherish what you had and marvel at how someone in your life could so profoundly shape it.
His voice is like a blanket. It makes me feel so safe. I rewatch this interview very frequently. The way that he grabs Conan’s hand, “I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my life”. The sincerity. I miss him so much.
That's how good of a writer Gene was he fought hard for a scene that became the most iconic in the movie. One of the best comedic actors there will ever be.

I love how Gene could be as gentle as a butterfly in one moment, and as unruly as a hurricane in the next. It’s that unpredictability that made him impossible to look away from
R.I.P the great Gene Wilder.....🙏🏻 I met him in 1993 in Manhattan, my ex-wife was doing volunteer work for Gilda’s club, it’s a charity for people with cancer....Gene came over to me and shook my hand and thanked me for coming...all he did was smile, I remember thinking how red his hair was and I can’t believe I was just having a convo with this Hollywood legend....just such a sweet man....🙏🏻
I wish they did more interviews like this on late night shows. Gene’s not advertising anything so he can give his whole attention to the interview and let it develop in a natural way.
This is why Conan's podcast is so good. Rarely are the guests promoting anything, and the interviews are long-form. I wish Gene Wilder was still around to do Conan's podcast.
Indeed i like to reflect on Doctor Strangelove for confirmation of that maxim. The funniest parts of that so-called masterpiece were the most real parts. Some parts were just silly and absurd; i find them tiresome and adolescent. Other parts are so funny because they reflect reality - in a twisted way of course.
This is one of the interviews where Conan wasn’t looking to crack jokes or anything like that He was hanging on every word Gene said and it was so genuine
He did try to crack a couple jokes that were lukewarm, like the oompa loompa one and the 'barred from the movies' one. But they were quick, and Conan himself glossed right over them. Yeah, for the most part he just let Wilder talk. He also had really interesting questions that allowed Wilder to give us some really cool insights into his life and career. I agree, it was awesome.
Gene was one of a kind. Very down-to-earth as a person, and as an actor and performer, he had talent and charisma out the wazoo. Willy Wonka, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Stir Crazy...the list goes on.
You can tell what a gentle soul Gene is by the way he sincerely appreciated Conan wanting him to be happy by the end of his book. Nothing about this guy seems contrived, artificial, or hurtful. What a wonderful human being.
I agree 100%. Just the calmness and smoothness of his voice is wonderful. He seems like he was a genuinely nice man as well as bring an absolute legend.
Watching Gene I get the feeling that if you ever were to tell him anything from your life, no matter how mundane it might seem in comparison to his fantastic career, he would listen with the most sincere interest. Such an amazing fellow.
The way he grabbed Conan's hand, it's like... "I REALLY want you to know I'm happy because I can see that you'll be happy for me." My God, what a beautiful moment.
One of the things I'm really noticing with Gene is his ability to express what he wants to express without going down any rabbit holes or over-explaining. The vast majority of older people tend to do this-- not Gene. He just says what he needs to say and then listens. Older people who do that: I really respect that. Even aged, they still are mindful of others.
Everytime I hear his voice I hear Fred Frankenstein, but when he said "I'm Happier Than I've Ever Been In My Life" that was pure Wonka energy and I must admit it choked me up a bit RIP Gene. There'll never be another like you
My brother in law went up to him as a kid and said 'hello mr Wonka' ... and he slammed the table and said I am NOT willy Wonka. I am gene wilder! My brother in law ran away crying. He yelled and was scary.
I watched a thing on Willie Wonka and they said that the producers had to hide him from the children because the kids loved him so much they followed him around constantly and he didn't have the heart to shoe them away. They said that the kids otherwise wouldn't let him get any work done. Kids tend to have a 6th sense about people. When droves of kids like a person, that person is generally just likable.
As a deaf kid see no evil hear no evil became my favorite movie The idea that a blind black guy and a white deaf guy needed eachother in the 80s just said something Idk it was a great movie
That scene being “frivolous” is actually what makes it the most memorable for me. It’s so over the top and dumb and unexpected that it works. Hilarious. R.I.P. to the man!!! Gene Wilder 🙏

Life is weirdly beautiful like that. Hang in there, for anyone else out there who is going through a tough time... ❤️
You can tell Conan genuinely respects Wilder. One of the best interviews I've seen him conduct.
Yes - you could tell he was truly star struck having him sitting right there in front of him. Conan had thoughtful questions and I think Gene appreciated that. I bet Conan was freaking out at the beginning when Gene was complimenting him so generously!!!😀
Bullshit
Be nice if he let Gene speak for more than a few seconds at a time.
Conan talking and his questions are so generic, boring, and commonly known that Gene might as well have not have been there. All modern talk hosts are like this. There is no depth and constant rehashing of the same old gladhanding.
I was thinking that too, what an opportunity and you can tell how much it means to him. Respect. ❤

@@ThirtyYearstoolate Wow, way to shit on a genuine moment; you are sad
Such a class act.
He was married to Gilda Radner. Gilda died of cancer. Towards the end she was in pain, and nauseated from the chemo. She snapped at a pizza delivery boy, a teenager. After Gilda took the pizza inside, Gene ran outside to apologize to the kid, and gave him a big tip. He later said that he will never forget the day Willy Wonka apologized to him and gave him a big tip.
😊
What a cool story, thanks for that.
I was just thinking that they were so adorable as a couple.
Bless him for keeping on, truly. Good to see him on Conan.

@@skudlugs That's why it's important why we don't waste other peoples time.
Time isn't real, it's an illusion. Man-made concept for breaking the day into sections. If you live in the moment you don't cry and whine like a baby about "having time".
More time: there are only 5,256,000 minutes in 10 years.
Isn't that the truth...it's just gone before you know it.😒😢
What a national treasure this man was. So much talent but so humble and kind.
I think Conan said it best when he said, "I wish we had more time." Rest well, you dear sweet man.
"And they wanted the line drawn"
This man understood children
THIS is what adults dont get. Kids want to be scared a bit. Kids may enjoy pure sugar fluff like most modern disney films, but deep down children have a desire for darker fare. The Brothers Grimm understood that.
MichaelNNY
The older Disney guys got that too.
@@jacobscherlinger3953 Yeah.... I think people forget that for the majority of Disney Films ...something heartbreaking happens, typically because someone dies. And in Disney Cartoons ...well ...they started the whole "Cartoon Violence" media craze.
This is a company depicted about families ...and for the most part children. Disney didn't pull punches. There was always kids crying in the theaters lol.
Because he remained one in a sense. Youll very rarely meet an adult thats as genuine as a child. He was.
I think he took the approach of Mr Rogers and had it down to almost a science.
What a tender, beautiful, brilliant, charismatic soul. I think it's time for another Wilder marathon.
Such a genuine and sweet man. I wish I had the chance to meet him. RIP Gene. Reunite with your true love, Gilda, eternally
What a beautiful man Gene Wilder was and what a fantastic interview conducted here by Conan.
A funny Conan is always great but a serious and sincere Conan is by far my favorite, you can tell this really meant something for him.
Wiliam Forsythe idk about that chief.
Great interview! Great flow, genuine admiration
Wiliam Forsythe I’m sorry whoever you are but, you are so wrong.
Agreed
Wiliam Forsythe you get NOTHING! YOU LOSE! GOOD DAY SIR!
The world's a worse place without Gene Wilder.
Him and O'brien are all apart of the same club anyways brother.
I agree, Mel is 93, I check everyday to make sure he's still kicking.
Amen brother!!!
Its a little darker to be honest
johnnny depp didnt do it for ya? lol jk
I went homeless around the time he died. I just found out now. My heart breaks for this gentle comic psycho genius because he was an irreplaceable expression of the universe.
@@maximilliangold2589 Thank you. My homelessness came from serving in the 3rd Cavalry and surviving retaliation. I've known many people in your shoes so know you're never alone and yes I'm starting to thrive though I still have many battles to come. Stay cool and stay healthy!
I hope you're doing much better
Stay safe, hope you are doing ok now
@@gthack371 Thank you. I'm still fighting the Veteran Affairs but I've fought my way off the streets and into a trailer. Thank you for your kind words.
You went homeless?
This is the kind of interview I think ppl dream of gene is so kind and Conan is seemingly star struck I would be too tbh it’s just amazing
I can't believe he lived so long after the death of Gilda Radnor. He was so broken for so long. He got back some semblance of the man he was but you could see he was never really the same. RIP Gene, Gilda and Richard.
I had the privilege to meet Gene Wilder years ago, and I’ve never met a more kinder, gentler, genuine person in my life. There I was trying not to fandom all over him, and he was just so gracious, so accommodating, just such a genuine guy all round. World needs more of him.
Conan can be such a respectful man I have tears in my eyes
Thought it was just me.He's a real Gentleman
Damn, rare to see an interview where both parties are so genuine. Loved this. ❤
I can feel the raw, pure goodness and sincerity just radiating from Gene like light from the sun. What a beautiful, lovely, incredible person.
when he touched conans hand i choked up a little bit. Such a gentleness in this man. And Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was my favourite movie as a child. I must have seen it 500 times
I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this. Why isn't there an TH-cam algorithm that just recommends these kind of clips? In this time when we have distant from everyone, I want to see more people connecting in a real way with their heroes.
Yes, A real classy gent; you nailed it Leorick. I watched Willie Wonka with my little boy so many times I believe I might have it memorized. Gene Wilder A+++
@@hudsonhawk1 A TH-cam algorithm DID recommend this clip to me. And it was just what I needed during this time of pandemic. Conan was thoughtful and kind, and Gene Wilder was a great guest.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was the Johnny Depp movie. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the original Gene Wilder movie.
You mean Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory...
He was a very kind, talented, brilliant man. Fans of Gene should read his memoir, "Kiss Me Like A Stranger". If you have an Audible account, it's so wonderful to hear his own voice narrating the book. Such a soft, warm, kind voice. It's a fascinating read about his childhood, early career, loves, losses, sorrows, and success.
Thank you. I'm going to get this evening.
Read it. Good book. He's such a legitimately talented person, both as a writer and actor, that it's worth the read just to hang around a creative genius for a while.
Thank you for this I had no idea he wrote a book.
Lovely recommendation
Thank you for this, I’m going to get it‼️
I am mourning deeply for these times that have gone. Seriously feeling weepy with love.
