No one in their right mind would willingly go to Seattle Grace Mercy Death. We have our own SGMD here. If I were in a potentially fatal car accident on the road in front of the hospital (which would put me less than 200 yards from their ER), I'd have someone throw me in the basket of an adult sized tricycle and pedal me to the next closest hospital before going into that hospital.
Sara Ramirez singing The Story is hands down one of my favorite covers of any song ever. She absolutely killed it, so much emotion and heart was put into that.
U typically sing a song based on what u hear not how u say each word so it’s easier to keep an accent while singing than just acting but he’s accent while acting never really slips so that’s really good
It depends on the singer; with some Brits (like the Beatles, Ed Sheeran, KT Tunstall), you can hear their accent while they sing, but others (Elton John, Eric Clapton, Emeli Sande, the latter being Scottish) sound American when they sing, so this could very well be his singing voice. I think it's because different parts of the brain control speaking and singing.
they actually attuned a lot of the Scottish accent out. I saw that in a video somewhere. There's a video of him singing how to save a life live and you are able to hear his accent a bit more.
So for context, Calliope (her full name) in Greek mythology is a muse of music, so herself singing is actually her soul speaking out to her (earlier in the series she mentions that she thinks dying would make her hear music) (I can't remember when or how she said it but it was similar to that) so she knows that she's basically dying that's why she panics because she hears everyone singing.
That could be, but a lot of pple. panic in life-threatening situations 1. Just because of intense FEAR, 2. Because of severe PAIN, & 3. Because it’s soooo much worse when you know what’s going on & can’t talk/do anything about it! When one’s a doctor/nurse, that puts one in a very vulnerable position where pple. one knows/works with day by day can see you at your worst, naked, putting their hands all over you, doing things you may/may not want, & can’t control it. She was also concerned for her baby, & didn’t know whether Arizona was alive yet or not. A calliope is also another name for a steam organ.

agreed. the first time i watched this video i was with hannah but i just watched the show through this episode and came back and the reaction is 100x better
So, Chandra Wilson (dr Bailey) also came from theater and musicals. Also, the songs in this episode are all songs that have been in the show throughout these 7 years in some way. That’s why “chasing cars” is used. It’s been in the show a lot, as well has “how to save a life”. This show, while a bit strange, introduced me to “the story” by Brandi Carlisle, and for that I’ll forever be grateful
I love how owen hunt is a Scottish actor and he still kept his American accent through his singing. I could only hear his accent come through when he said his “t’s”
I respectfully disagree. Lashing out the way he did is just flat out fucked. Technically neither of them should have been treating her as doctors. This is a rule because when you have high emotions you can act rashly.
@@serenashinon1264 Neither of them were acting as her doctor but rather her next of kin to make medical decisions because she was unable to do it herself.
mark is one of the best characters in the show. seeing this episode out of context i can definitely see why you might think he's an ass but there's so much more to the story and to him.
Fun fact about Addison Montgomery? She is the top neonatal, prenatal and fetal surgeon in the country, possibly even the world. Not only that but she's also a double board certified OB/GYN. She's also got qualifications in both General and Pediatrics surgery; as well as infantile surgery. She can quite literally do everything. Also - Sara, Chyler and Chandra really saved this epsiode.
@@immortalset6 Wasn’t she the one that came on that needed to be held and wanted Arizona to learn everything she knew before she died? She was really weird, & nobody likes her!
Addison is literally the very best of the game professionally and then they keep hitting her with trauma and issues in her personal life and never give her a break and I find that very rude
Yeah she was it for fetal surgery at least but Addison is incredibly renowned in the neonatal surgery field and OB/GYN field. They literally say there’s only 4 people who can do what she does. She is and I quote Private Practice „the Meryl Streep of neonatal medicine“. She’s a legend@@immortalset6
And Addison also studied like genealogy and stuff, right? She's literally the most badass surgeon there is and yet moved to work at a private clinic in LA to do basically no surgeries. Like I still like private practice but I love Addison the most when she gets to be in the middle of like a stressful surgery, making tough choices, being badass, showing off how she's definitely 100% better than everyone else.
When she got to the hospital, Callie says “Calliope means music”. So it’s like after the accident, she is hallucinating and her first thought was the meaning of her name. So that’s how it’s justified haha. I honestly love this episode, everyone’s great for me.
The fact that she doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and how grays works makes it so funny cuz it points out how blinded we are by our love for the show and we forget logic sometimes
Yesss same this is the first place I ever heard that song. I never really liked songs I don't know when they are in episodes like this or like in Live auditions... then I heard Brandi carlile's and I just love her voice cracking
I love Mark. I literally was coming to comment that saying bad things about Mark on the internet isnt the best idea... what he said to Arizona was wrong, she's not nothing but he is not a sperm donor either. Callie is his best friend and is carrying his child. Callie is also Arizona's girlfriend. They both get a say. Stress makes us say nasty things as does fear
There is one thing that really really bugs me about this episode...that they didn't release a recording!! I want this album! That harmony on Chasing Cars, Lexie's delicate Breathe, how fun Sunshine was (though I agree it was a little misplace din the seriousness of the episode) and damn when Callie lets loose...WANT ALBUM.
Fun fact: They wrote this episode specifically for Sara Ramirez which is why she has the majority of the singing...they also gave to biggest singing roles to the best singers Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) and Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey). They also picked the songs from iconic songs from previous seasons
I never realized the connection between “chasing cars” and her being in a crash, and I’ve seen this series at least 6 times through, and I chuckled aggressively
I remember this episode when it aired. The whole cast had amazingly good voices and while it's very much a Karaoke type of musical episode, the feeling of the songs fit, even if the lyrics don't always. It remains one of my favorite episodes.
I have rewatched this episode more than any other, and I've watched the entire series at least 20 times. It's a beautiful episode, and one of the rare times that a TV show came up with an organic reason for their musical episode. It actually makes sense.
Callie actually says "Calliope means music", not "do you hear music"... The episode recalls the phenomenon of the human brain under trauma and its reaction :) Plus: Chasing Cars is one of Grey's signature songs from the beginning :)

@@TheEmilyFravel Yeah, the veins thing isn't a regular look for him. He was terrified that his best friend and baby were going to die, so he was one big bundle of nerves at that point.
I know everyone were all like “why is everybody singing?” But it has been said that this was Callie’s dream/hallucinations. I mean the woman was in a car accident! Cut her some slack!
Callie is Bisexual, the other woman is Arizona her girlfriend. Then there’s mark, who slept with Callie when Arizona left. Lexie is the soulmate of mark 🥺🥺🥺
I feel like because grey's anatomy has such a large cast, they could pick out the people with the best voices and write the story around that, so everyone sounds amazing, it's very well done
Mark (the father of the baby) is Callie's best friend, and they used to be sex buddies (Idk how else to describe it). I don't remember much of this season, but Callie and Arizona broke-up I think, so Callie slept with Mark and then Arizona and her came back together, but she was pregnant, so the baby has 3 parents now... And Lexie (the one who sang "Breathe") is Mark's ex. And yes, she's with Jackson now. The "random patient" singing is Henry, he was sick and Teddy (the blonde one) married him so he could be on her insurance and survive. After a while they actually fell in love. And also yes, everyone's horny all the time in this show...
The way I interpreted this episode is that due to Callie's brain injury, she is hallucinating her 'whole' self and the singing (hence asking can you hear music). The 'premonition' is not really one, she is remembering and enhancing with her hallucination. This is why the singing seems to happen so randomly. Just my two pence :)
Actually she is dissociating. It's a coping mechanism for you in traumatic events. You kind of split your mind apart of your body, so you don't feel the pain the body does. It's pretty common and usually desceibed as "standing beside youself and watching" this way you protect your mind by keeping the distance. You feel like it doesn't happen to you but to someone you just watch.
@@lucykane657 Also, she is actually hearing all the voices around her even when she’s unconscious, & the members of the cast are actually Callie’s friends/co-workers in Callie’s life. Hearing is the last thing to go, & often pts. who are in situations like this one often still hear pple. talking around them (sometimes despite sedation and/or brain injuries). As you said, often it’s like you’re seeing yourself in a scene, trying to figure it out, trying to talk/get someone’s attention, but can’t. I was in a near-drowning episode when I was little & it was like I was watching myself. I said things when I was out of the water that I wasn’t even old enough to make up!
Bailey: "Let's waste time" Hannah: "NO!" Also, Chyler Leigh (girl singing 'Breathe') is a singer - she and her husband have put out some really nice music. Mark is an absolute ass in this story arc, but gets redeemed a bit later on and I was actually sad when he died. Final statement; Callie has an amazing voice and she was one of my favourite characters, when I used to watch (I stopped watching, when a bunch of characters died in rapid succession)
Mark wasn’t so much an “ass” as just a great plastic surgeon that knew how good he was and a playboy that liked women! The one who was truly an “ass” at the beginning (but sort of also redeemed himself) was Alex Korev! He slept with everyone, cheated, laughed and made fun of pple., belittled others, & gave O’Malley VD, among other things! Yuck! He always thought he was better than anyone else & was incredibly arrogant.
“Ooo girl your hair looks so good for coming out of surgery” literally what I always think when watching this show 😂 as a student nurse, any time I’ve been in theatres and worn a scrub cap for hours when I finish and take the cap off my hair is a mess 😂
If I remember correctly, they knew that Callie, Bailey, and Owen all had a successful musical theater background, so they were obviously going to be a big part of this. Lexie was a complete surprise so they rewrote it to include a song for her (thank God! it's my favorite). Then all of the songs were in important iconic moments of earlier seasons. ps mark and lexie are the best, don't judge him too harshly ;)

I remember playing the soundtrack on repeat when I was pregnant with my oldest. Owen's song (How We Operate) was my favorite song just because his voice gave me chills, and my daughter would fall asleep every time it played, even for about a year after birth. This episode and the songs still always make me cry.
Fun fact: No one knew that Chyler Leigh (the actress singing "Breathe") had a beautiful singing voice. So they added that song for her after they found out she could sing. It wasn't really planned from the beginning.
@@jonahprada8801 oh geez, i honestly don't remember. It was years ago when the episode aired for the first time. I think it was in a behind the scenes video where the cast and crew talked about the musical, or it might have been an interview (but my bet is on the behind the scenes video, you can probably find it on youtube very easily).
The best explanation I've heard for this ep being a musical episode is that Callie is connected with music and the only way she could comfort herself while this was happening to her was to imagine her friends and herself singing
Plot summary: Arizona (blonde who proposed) has been with Callie (who is bi) for a while. They broke up for a little bit, and while they were broken up, Callie slept with Mark and got pregnant. Now Lexi,(also merideth’s sister)(who sings breathe) is in love with Mark. They have been off and on for a little bit. Ginger doctor is Owen Hunt, he is a military surgeon and he is quite amazing ngl. Bailey is the shorter doctor who ends up being the chief of surgery. During Wait, Arizona and Mark are fighting over parental dominance while Bailey is trying to care for Callie. April and Lexi sing harmonies for that song. Hot doctor is Jackson Avery. VERY HOT
Thank you. I kind of wish she'd done some research before doing this episode. I know she was just supposed to critique the singing but she did talk about the show too and had no idea what was going on or who anyone was. It was kind of frustrating
Grey's has a strong history using songs, and often names episodes after them. The musical episode features some of its most iconic from previous key moments. The big ones are Chasing Cars, How to Save a Life, The Story, and Where does the Good Go. The name of the musical episode is Song Beneath a Song. Whilst that piece isn't sung in the musical episode it has been used several times. The season 18 finale used lots of the most iconic songs but some with new cover versions including a really good version of The Story by Davis Naish.

Jesse Williams (Jackson) is going to broadway now. What a musical theater cast
@@hazelfilene964 sadly he won’t be singing🥺
So, Chandra Wilson (dr Bailey) also came from theater and musicals. Also, the songs in this episode are all songs that have been in the show throughout these 7 years in some way. That’s why “chasing cars” is used. It’s been in the show a lot, as well has “how to save a life”. This show, while a bit strange, introduced me to “the story” by Brandi Carlisle, and for that I’ll forever be grateful
The amount of characters in this episode, that are no longer on the show is astounding. And it’s making me miss people even more😭.

How to save a life: Hannah- “Callie coming in to save the song”. So true!
Yes mark was a jerk in this episode but honestly I don't blame him, his bestfriend/mother of his unborn child was dying, he had every right to upset
I respectfully disagree. Lashing out the way he did is just flat out fucked. Technically neither of them should have been treating her as doctors. This is a rule because when you have high emotions you can act rashly.
I don’t blame him either people love to judge others when they were never in that situation

Dr. Nicole Herman was the world renowned neonatal and fetal surgeon

Experiencing this through Hannah's eyes is soooooo HILARIOUS!! Even more than a Riverdale review
It's always a treat I love her
"He's so veiny. Hope you're okay.. sperm donor Mark." When I tell you I laughed out loud 💀😂
When she got to the hospital, Callie says “Calliope means music”. So it’s like after the accident, she is hallucinating and her first thought was the meaning of her name. So that’s how it’s justified haha. I honestly love this episode, everyone’s great for me.
And callies whole identiy i feel is always that girl dancing in her underwear. Its very clear callie is big on music.💗
LOVE this episode! Still think Sara s have won an Emmy!!
The fact that she doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and how grays works makes it so funny cuz it points out how blinded we are by our love for the show and we forget logic sometimes
That's what's pissing me off, that she doesn't know what's going on
I would have felt better if she had just asked one person before making this episode to break down the plot/ characters for her
I love how she’s like “wow this episode is stressful” like that’s 17 seasons of greys for you

The amount of disrespect to Mark Sloan is astounding

Dude, same.

It used to be available on iTunes. Maybe it's not any more, but I had it at one point.
I still have it

Fun fact: They wrote this episode specifically for Sara Ramirez which is why she has the majority of the singing...they also gave to biggest singing roles to the best singers Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) and Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey). They also picked the songs from iconic songs from previous seasons
I never realized the connection between “chasing cars” and her being in a crash, and I’ve seen this series at least 6 times through, and I chuckled aggressively
Fun fact about greys: all the episodes are named after songs (I think there is only one exception but yeah I think it’s pretty cool)

@Sophia Lapointe i thought that episode was called four seasons in one day?
@@adrienneep3849 it has a different name depending on where you stream it I think
What? I didn’t realize that until you mentioned it lol
I remember this episode when it aired. The whole cast had amazingly good voices and while it's very much a Karaoke type of musical episode, the feeling of the songs fit, even if the lyrics don't always. It remains one of my favorite episodes.
Lexies version of breathe is soo iconic throughout the entire show plz
fr
I think it's better than the original
the fact that Grey's used a little part of her version in the promo to announce her return on the beach was so iconic
Chasing Cars play whenever someone either dies or may die. So the second you hear it just start crying

I also love it, and I will die on the hill with you.
I also love it. It is really important to the plot and I like hearing the actors singing voices
I have rewatched this episode more than any other, and I've watched the entire series at least 20 times.
It's a beautiful episode, and one of the rare times that a TV show came up with an organic reason for their musical episode. It actually makes sense.
I love this episode so much, it’s my comfort Greys episode. It’s an either love or hate but the musical Greys lovers are many
Callie actually says "Calliope means music", not "do you hear music"... The episode recalls the phenomenon of the human brain under trauma and its reaction :)

Mapping down all the relationships in this show would take like a week 😂
Arizona left Callie at the airport to go to Africa. So Callie went and had sex with Mark.
And then spoiler Henry dies lmao
@@kathialara1617 like so many else 😢
Friend with benefits.
I thought ghost.
I think she said “calliope means music” not do you hear music
Also makes sense as to why she kinda freaked when Owen started singing
Bailey: "Let's waste time"
Hannah: "NO!"
Also, Chyler Leigh (girl singing 'Breathe') is a singer - she and her husband have put out some really nice music.
Mark is an absolute ass in this story arc, but gets redeemed a bit later on and I was actually sad when he died.
Final statement; Callie has an amazing voice and she was one of my favourite characters, when I used to watch (I stopped watching, when a bunch of characters died in rapid succession)

The one who was truly an “ass” at the beginning (but sort of also redeemed himself) was Alex Korev! He slept with everyone, cheated, laughed and made fun of pple., belittled others, & gave O’Malley VD, among other things! Yuck! The best explanation I've heard for this ep being a musical episode is that Callie is connected with music and the only way she could comfort herself while this was happening to her was to imagine her friends and herself singing
Wow that actually makes sense!!
That’s always what I thought because of how she says “calliope means music” at the beginning before the singing starts
VERY HOT
Also note to Hannah: Arizona is played by Jessica Capshaw- Kate Capshaw's daughter and Steven Spielberg's step daughter

Chandra Wilson aka Miranda Bailey did a lot of theatre even before Grey’s Anatomy. She is a phenomenal performer.
