Honestly, I was waiting for this episode from the moment I knew Barrowman was involved with the Arrowverse, but every new addition to the cast was like an added promise that the musical episode was coming. I'm still sad they didn't utilize everyone they could have though

Their chemistry is amazing, that's a given but with Mon-el's tendency (before going into the future) of not listening to Kara and not treating her in the way that respects her individuality and the need of her not fully needing to be saved all the time (this episode excluded), made me think that Mon-el and Kara had too many things counteracting each other with their personalitlies and what they need/wanted in a relationship. If that makes sense.

Kara sings “Running Home to You” at their wedding as Iris walks down the aisle. It was very touching until the wedding got disrupted by nazis from another earth.
Hannah's total lack of awareness of how 90% of the cast are actual professional singers and dancers and thats why they did a musical episode in the first place, is so endeering :')
This proposal ending scene is one of the most iconic moments to Flash literally because of these two characters, as Barry and Iris, are just as important as their superhero and news reporter selves. And it's just one of the most important scenes to the show when you understand the context of what's happened before and coming after this. I've watched and cried over this scene so many times over the years haha
She said "when a show does a musical episode, not every single person has singing experience but they all sound great"....they basically did this episode BECAUSE so many members of each cast have musical theater experience. 😉
There are so many Arrowverse actors that have musical theater backgrounds! There's another episode where Barry and Kaitlin sing, and Joe is a singer in an alternate universe that Barry visited.
Yeah Grant Gustin totally knows how to tap dance, he is trained in tap dancing. This whole episode is “look we have these amazing talented singers/dancers/Broadway people. Let’s have fun and show it off”.
I never caught that the first time I saw this episode ... I just thought it was a nod to Barry being the Scarlet Speedster and Kara the Girl of Steel (huckleberry is a fruit, but it's also a shade of red that is mixed with blue, more of a reddish purple).
The joke about Barry saying he'll "be there in a flash" and Kara scolding him is a long standing joke because Barry constantly says it in the comics, and everyone groans.
when you said Barry is a feminist he so is, in another episode with him a Kara he literally went "Let's step away from the nice lady and settle this like women" and when Kara looked at him he just went "what, there are more of you guys here then me" I loved it.
My favorite is when they introduce the two characters to each other. Kara is on fire and Barry goes to pay the fire and then goes “oop! Nope, not touching without consent”

Love this episodes. I never knew Grant and Melissa had such good voices.. But it made sense when I found out they had both been in Glee. When Grant sang "Running Home To You" I was blown away and it became one of my favorite songs
Grant starred in West Side Story and travelled doing shows. Melissa has background is musical theatre as well and recently starred in the Carol King Musical!

When Kara said “Thank rao ” it’s the god of krypton, and her story is the same as Superman’s. I probably watched this episode like a hundred times I love it
I’m upset she skimmed over the part where they said “it’s almost like they’ve done this before” as a little nod to the fact that a bunch of them were in glee. I honestly didn’t even realize it or recognize them until that line 😂
I yelled at my phone when she said that too like seriously?!? And Darren, grant and Melissa were literally in a show called glee about singing so why is she surprised they can all sing? Then again she may just not watch glee or doctor who (which is where I was originally introduced to John Barrow man) so cant really get mad
That point about how not everyone in musical episodes can sing is a good observation. If I’m not mistaken, every single person who sings in this episode has had theatre experience or some kind of singing background. The reason why this all takes place in this weird dream sequence is because about half the actors in this episode are not from this show but rather from spin off shows where they all exist in the same universe. Except some of the other shows dont fit the tone of having a musical episode. So they used that story telling tool to specifically bring in (either all or almost all) cast members who can actually sing!
There's actually a lot musical theatre alums in these shows. They didn't even have time to showcase Chris Wood, Tom Cavanagh, Amy Pemberton, or, if you want to go outside this particular season, Ciara Renee and Colin Donnell.
My favourite tidbit of trivia for this episode is that every single person who sings in the episode has been on Broadway at some point. That's why they're all so amazing. Also, Victor Garber, who was actually written off his own cw superhero crossover show, was brought back for this one episode only, just so he could sing. He was, at the time, on Broadway with Bernadette Peters in Hello Dolly (Which I had the absolute *pleasure* to be able to see live) but was brought back for this one episode purely because he has been, and at the time actually was, on Broadway. Anyways, just a little fun fact for you!

"Coincidence, we have Broadway stars and excellent singers on the show, let's give the audience a musical episode, why not?" And the audience ended up loving the episode including me, I LOVE THIS EPISODE
Honestly it was a travesty that they decided not to do another musical episode after that. It's even more of a disgrace considering how Supergirl is ending now. I want them at least to say goodbye! Come on!
This was honestly one of the only musical episodes of a generally non musical show that I absolutely adore. And I know for a fact that it was due to the cast.
This is the first musical episode since Buffy's Once More With Feeling that felt like it really captured the spirit of what a musical episode should be. Easily one of my favorite episodes in the entire Arrowverse.
"Who runs out into the middle of a gun fight?" Well. I mean. As the Fastest Man Alive, Barry can generally avoid getting shot very easily, and Kara and usually bulletproof.
that's very true. Supergirl is basically invincible as long as she has her powers but strong villains can still hurt her as can magic and Green Kryptonite. A red sun will also weaken her powers.
I genuinely love when a none geek watches a geek show and actually semi enjoys it. Loved your commentary, this was actually fun to watch. I Laughed so many times. Yeh, “runnin home to you” is an original song for the show. Kara sings a version of it at Barry’s wedding and grant (Barry) has also sung it on stage live at festivals. Also Kara’s bf in the show (the one you thought was cute) is also her husband irl

Liv ORourke Warblers is a performing group in Glee. Darren and Grant’s characters were once members. The hand to chest and swaying thing was kindof a signature move when Grant was the team’s lead.
"Running Home to You" is a running theme between Iris and Flash. The song was perfect for the moment. One of the best proposal scenes on TV. I think they did the entire musical episode just to have a reason to have Barry sing to Iris and propose.

@@bonkey12 I know that they're not related, and I have watched most of the show (I stopped at around season 5-6), but for some reason it's always made me uncomfortable how the love of siblings "blooms" (I can't think of a better word rn) into romantic love. It also made me uncomfortable how jealous Barry got in the earlier seasons whenever iris got with someone else although it's none of his damn business. I don't know, It's just a personal gripe of mines.

The best thing about "Keep Runnin' Home to You" is that the chord progression is LITERALLY The Flash Theme, as in his Superhero Music. They took the 4 chords which gave chills whenever he's being a hero and added even more meaning and power behind them.
I was so sad when Mon-El had to leave on Supergirl but when I found this out it made me feel 100 times better to know they ended up together in real life because I thought Mon-El and Kara would end up together on Supergirl
I love how annoyed she was when they both got shot, it was so funny. Also the actor for the Flash, Supergirl, the Music Meiser, have all danced and sung together in Glee.
I think they both ran in the middle of that gun fight cuz usually it wouldn’t be that dangerous to them and they weren’t used to not having their powers to protect them. But yes, her reaction was hilarious 😂

Grant does actually know how to tap dance. He started taking lessons when he was a child. There’s actually a great video of him dancing to Good Morning from Singing in the Rain which really shows off his talent.

Everyone is freaking out about the Glee reunion, but I’m over here freaking out about the Starkid reunion! Darren Criss started starkid back in 2009, and Carlos Valdes who plays Cisco on the Flash, worked behind the scenes for the first few musicals! I love that Darren and Carlos got the chance to work together again!
The girl in this aka supergirl/Kara is played by Melissa Benoist who is also in seasons 4 and 5 of glee and plays a girl named Marley and the main dude in this the flash/Barry was also in glee and was most prominently a character in season three and he played a dude named Sebastian, and the guy in this that casted the spell and put Barry and Kara to sleep was also in glee and was a very important character from seasons 2-6 and played a character named Blaine

Yes, that last song, "Running Home to You" was the absolute best part of the musical episode. Supergirl (Kara) sings it for Barry and Iris during their wedding episode in season... 4 I think, so if you wanted to react to something short I'd recommend that.
yes this is one of my favourite musical episodes, because they used every actor that had a vocal background in the shows universe and brought them to sing, which not everyone does, and it just makes it so much better
They didn’t use everyone, but almost all of them which is amazing! That’s why the episode is so good. But Chris Wood (Mon-El) has a musical background and Chyler Leigh (Alex in supergirl) sings in a band. But having so many musically talented actors who you have to fit into the episode and give everyone time is probably really tough.
I love that glee had the superhero episode and Melissa’s character was like ‘skin tight spandex? not my thing’ And then a few years later she was supergirl😂😂
Grant Gustin who plays the flash was in Glee in a later season. He played a bully from the prep school I forgot the name of. Kara (I don't know the actress's name) was also in Glee in an even later season. Soooo yeah they both knew how to sing and dance before this show. Also H.R. was referring to H.R. Wells. The guy that said "They're back!"
Fun fact: Carlos (guy with long hair) and Darren went to college together! For Starkid fans, Carlos was in the original band in AVPM and co-wrote MAMD with Darren as well as was also being in the band for that as well.
Not only that, but they went to college with and graduated 3 years behind Pasek and Paul, which is part of how they got involved in this episode. Breaks my heart as a Buckeye that it was that school up north, but I can make an exception because they are all awesome.

Darren's playing the part of a comic character who literally teaches lessons, that's why his hair's like that. A decent chunk of these people were on Glee at some point or another, like Kara and Barry, or have experience with singing at some point in the past.
All of them had Broadway careers. Darren, Grant and Melissa were in glee which was so iconic. CW really said lets take 2 stars from glee and make them superheros then bring a fellow glee member on an musical episode for them to reunite.
The guy that plays Cisco is called Carlos Valdes and fun fact: He studied Musical theatre (or acting/singing or smt) at the University of Michigan with Darren Criss. He also wrote some songs for the show "Me and my dick" by Team Starkid😇
"True Love's Kiss" You kinda have to know the story of Barry Allen and Iris West to get this. She is his lodestar. Her super power is to be his rock when he rolls. Wherever Barry goes in the world, the universe, the multiverse, the Speed Force, you name it. She's his ticket home. Always has been. Always will be. It's a weird super power and she don't get a cape but in some ways Iris West puts Lois Lane to shame. Since day one I've loved seeing Candace Patton in this role. She exemplifies the heart of Iris West. The writers sometimes forget this, but Candace Patton never has. Love conquers all.

I watched Supergirl before I watched Greys and spent all of Lexie's seasons like, "wow, she's so beautiful. I wonder why I've not seen her in anything else" and never once clocked that she was Alex. I also watched all of Glee and never once clocked it was Melissa Benoist in both. I only realised for both when I went to imdb. The Supergirl/Superman hairstyle and glasses fixes would work on me for sure :P
Well Jeremy is an accomplished piano player. Even when he starred in the series Smash, his role was the song composer for the musical that was being written within the show.
My daughter actually walked down the isle to 'Running Home To You'. And her and her husband have amazing voices and sing it to each other randomly when they just feel the need to say "I love you" through song. It's so adorable.
John Barrowman (Cutter) was nominated the Laurence Olivier Awarrd for best Actor in a Musical in 1998. He's also released several albulms. Jesse Martin (one of the dads) originated the role of Tom Collins in Rent on Broadway. Victor Garber has a prolific Broadway career and has won 4 Tony awards. As for the younger cast you seem to know their history with singing exvept for Carlos and someone else already pointed it out. But the older generation in the episode all have extensive histories working on Broadway and the East End.

I never caught that the first time I saw this episode ... I just thought it was a nod to Barry being the Scarlet Speedster and Kara the Girl of Steel (huckleberry is a fruit, but it's also a shade of red that is mixed with blue, more of a reddish purple).

Love this episodes. I never knew Grant and Melissa had such good voices.. But it made sense when I found out they had both been in Glee. When Grant sang "Running Home To You" I was blown away and it became one of my favorite songs

That point about how not everyone in musical episodes can sing is a good observation.
If I’m not mistaken, every single person who sings in this episode has had theatre experience or some kind of singing background. The reason why this all takes place in this weird dream sequence is because about half the actors in this episode are not from this show but rather from spin off shows where they all exist in the same universe. Except some of the other shows dont fit the tone of having a musical episode.
So they used that story telling tool to specifically bring in (either all or almost all) cast members who can actually sing!

My favourite tidbit of trivia for this episode is that every single person who sings in the episode has been on Broadway at some point. That's why they're all so amazing. Also, Victor Garber, who was actually written off his own cw superhero crossover show, was brought back for this one episode only, just so he could sing. He was, at the time, on Broadway with Bernadette Peters in Hello Dolly (Which I had the absolute *pleasure* to be able to see live) but was brought back for this one episode purely because he has been, and at the time actually was, on Broadway. Anyways, just a little fun fact for you!

This is the first musical episode since Buffy's Once More With Feeling that felt like it really captured the spirit of what a musical episode should be. Easily one of my favorite episodes in the entire Arrowverse.

Liv ORourke Warblers is a performing group in Glee. Darren and Grant’s characters were once members. The hand to chest and swaying thing was kindof a signature move when Grant was the team’s lead.
"Running Home to You" is a running theme between Iris and Flash. The song was perfect for the moment. One of the best proposal scenes on TV. I think they did the entire musical episode just to have a reason to have Barry sing to Iris and propose.

@@bonkey12 I know that they're not related, and I have watched most of the show (I stopped at around season 5-6), but for some reason it's always made me uncomfortable how the love of siblings "blooms" (I can't think of a better word rn) into romantic love. The best thing about "Keep Runnin' Home to You" is that the chord progression is LITERALLY The Flash Theme, as in his Superhero Music. They took the 4 chords which gave chills whenever he's being a hero and added even more meaning and power behind them.

Yes, that last song, "Running Home to You" was the absolute best part of the musical episode. Supergirl (Kara) sings it for Barry and Iris during their wedding episode in season... 4 I think, so if you wanted to react to something short I'd recommend that.

Yes exactly! Its unlike other shows (Riverdale...) where they have the entire cast sing even if they really cant.
They didn’t use everyone, but almost all of them which is amazing! That’s why the episode is so good. But Chris Wood (Mon-El) has a musical background and Chyler Leigh (Alex in supergirl) sings in a band. But having so many musically talented actors who you have to fit into the episode and give everyone time is probably really tough.

Darren's playing the part of a comic character who literally teaches lessons, that's why his hair's like that. A decent chunk of these people were on Glee at some point or another, like Kara and Barry, or have experience with singing at some point in the past.
All of them had Broadway careers. Darren, Grant and Melissa were in glee which was so iconic. CW really said lets take 2 stars from glee and make them superheros then bring a fellow glee member on an musical episode for them to reunite.

It's a little sad Chyler Leigh (who plays Supergirl's sister) wasn't involved in this episode. I know Hannah really loved her rendition of "Breathe" from the Grey's Anatomy musical episode.
I watched Supergirl before I watched Greys and spent all of Lexie's seasons like, "wow, she's so beautiful. I wonder why I've not seen her in anything else" and never once clocked that she was Alex. I also watched all of Glee and never once clocked it was Melissa Benoist in both. I only realised for both when I went to imdb. The Supergirl/Superman hairstyle and glasses fixes would work on me for sure :P
