A lot of people don't understand how integral songs are in musicals i.e. how they push the story forward, and, weirdly enough, having this many useless songs in the film is a really good example of that. no. His father is finding him someone TO MARRY and expand the kingdom. It's different. He is throwing a ball for him to find an incubator. Not a woman.
@@Raikonichan he's a teenager whose idea of marriage is seeing his undermined mother being undermined by his father who is the king and his father is constantly showing that, even if they loved each other once, he still treats her badly and believes himself the best. As a kid, he wanted to be like him. As he's seen through his change, he realises he doesn't want to be like him, even if he has to one day. He is not "finding" because he doesn't want to "find" and become what his father is. I think the movie makes it quite clear by the way he answers to him after the ball and before the shoe search. Furthermore, it is pretty obvious when he is told that he is been given a chance to find one at a ball, and he says he wants to fall in love. He knows he is not going to fall in love in a ball. He knows he is not going to fall in love for someone that first and foremost, wants him for being the prince. I think it is pretty obvious. Also, how is he meant to meet someone and pretend they don't "know" him? For all we know, before that, he only trusted one person and it was his best friend, thus why said guy was the only one knowing he was going after Ella disguised as a peasant.
“He has a fantastic voice, but it feels like they’re trying really hard to make this song funny, and I don’t think that it is, so actually it’s just coming off really cringey and, like, too much.” That’s it. That’s the entire movie.
Fun fact, in the original (like, the grimm original, not the disneyfied version), the ball lasted for 3 days. And Cinderella attended all 3 of them, danced with the prince and had to run away on midnight 3 times. Which makes the love story a tad more coherent and believable. And there was also a sort of progression with that dynamic, cause on the first night he was obviously confused, the second night he tried to chase after her and on the third night he had tar spread on the stairs which then her slipper got stuck in. Which then also makes it more plausible for the prince to venture out and seek out his mystery darling by letting every woman in the kingdom try the slipper. Idk, I just like that originial version more. The disneyfied rushed love story just kinda feels so.. dulled down? And makes both the prince and Cinderella (Aschenputtel) seemingly behave like children (Also the brutal ending of the stepmom is a huge plus). All this disney fluff always annoyed me, idk
The Brothers Grimm version was in no way the original. The Disney version is based on the story as told by Perrault in 1697, Cendrillon. It is very fluffy, no gore included. The Brothers Grimm adapted the story more than a hundred years later and added the brutal bits. Of course, the story has been around for much longer than that with different versions all over the world. But the version that we think of today with the pumpkin and the glass slipper was written by Perrault and is just as fluffy as Disney. The "original" fairy tales aren't always the most brutal ones.
@@matilda1380 Which is why I specified the "grimm original" and not the "original, written by the grimms". The original story about Cindrillon was written by a french, which itself is based on an italian story by Giovanni Basile. But you're right, the disney version is much more closely held to the french version
@@xDarkestDemonx None of the ones you’re talking about is “the original” even though you keep repeating that word. It’s a fairytale, and as a fairytale, there _isn’t_ an original. Because it is a story that has been told thousands of times, passed down through generations, changed and shifted depending on who tells it, adapted by countless different authors writing down their own version. There is no original, there’s just different versions of it, some more well known than others. The oldest known version of Cinderella are from somewhere between 7 BC to 23 AD and was about a slave whose sandal was stolen by an eagle and dropped in front of the Egyptian king who then sent out everyone to find the girl and when they did he married her.
Fun fact into the woods have these little tid bits. The multiple days, the pitch on the stairs and even the step sisters cutting off parts of their feet. Oh and the birds pecking their eyes out. Which I believe is closer to the Hans Christian Anderson tales but not sure
they were like "no one has ever done a cinderalla so diverse and modern" when they should have just restored the Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella with Brandi and Whitney lol the music in that is WONDERFUL and the best musical cinderella ever made
All this movie did was make me want to watch Ever After with Drew Barrymore. Both the main characters actually had wants and development AND they actually had a relationship before they "fell in love". The step mother even had a moment where you sympathized with her despite her remaining an evil character throughout the movie!!! And if I really wanted to listen to a musical version of Cinderella, I'd go watch the 1997 one with Brandy!!!
"They are all dressed in different time periods." Yeah I noticed that too, seemingly from the 1700's all the way to the 1920's. They couldn't pick a style and stick with it?
Ohohohhh you’re forgetting that friggin 2021 white dress asymmetrical exposed corset that Cabello wore in the last scene. I’m a fashion nerd and the lack of acknowledgement of a grounding for the historical inaccuracies caused me physical pain At least in Ella Enchanted they explain such historical vagueness as being different species aesthetics, and in Bridgerton they were clear that the regency fashion was influenced by different racial histories. This was just painful
I don't think it's a bad thing to just try to make it semi-histotical without a set time period but it was really bothering that they didn't have one kind of style-
@@catgames703 Twist on fashion is ok, Bridgestones is a good example but the main character is casually going out in underwear! It's not a twist, it's not anything interesting, it's like girl in only pantries in the middle of busy city nowadays.
They really said "let's remake Ella Enchanted" and failed This is also a petition for Hannah to watch Ella Enchanted if she hasn't already! Like if you agree!
I'd prefer they remake Ella Enchanted and actually follow the book this time. They basically adapted it in name only with the movie they actually made.
Haven’t seen this movie yet other than this react video, and from what I can see it’s the most basic of tick boxing to appease the modern world. I’m not saying any of it is bad, of course diversity is great, but the rest is just so obvious. The whole “woke” plot twist of the princess inheriting the throne instead of the prince, (the king not having much choice as his son runs off); Ella choosing her own path as a strong independent woman 💁🏽♀️; the prince following her lead because SHE opened HIS eyes; a groundbreaking male fairy godmother - but let’s make him fabulous!! It’s all so trite. All these things are great messages for kids, who deserve to think and believe better than previous generations, so I guess that’s the main thing.
“How do I simultaneously feel like this movie is going NOWHERE but is also incredibly rushed?” That’s exactly how I felt about the movie but I could never put it into words 😂
Hannah: This song belongs in Ella Enchanted. Honesty, I feel like this movie is trying really hard to be a 'better' Ella Enchanted without understanding what makes Ella Enchanted fun to watch.
It’s also trying really hard to be Whitney Houston’s Cinderella. Which one probably wouldn’t know unless they watched that movie. Then watched the 2021 version
I believe you've discovered the common problem with jukebox musicals - the songs, because they're pop songs and not theatre songs, are written to express _emotions_ and not _motivations_
If I'm remembering right, wasn't Cats a musical with songs that showed more emotions than motivations? Would a jukebox musical work with these the same kind of format as Cats?
@@jamontoast7467 Good point! I think some have done a good job of that, like Ella Enchanted but this Cinderella didn't seem very accurate or thoughtful with their song choice. eg the prince's song about wanting love after saying he wasn't interested in marriage. It felt like they just wanted to use a bunch of pop songs.
@@rachaelb.471 Not to mention the opening song. ‘Rhythm nation’ a song about injustice and the unification of a group of people. Yet they used it in the sense that they are like ‘in a rhythm’ doing the same thing every day, so they can only repeat the chorus. Which is unfortunately a common thing for this movie, only using snippets of songs cuz certain lyrics don’t fit.
I love love love the girl who played Drizella. Her name is Maddie Baillio and she played Tracy in Hairspray Live. Shes absolutely phenomenal and she made this movie so much better.
The movie acts like Cinderella got married just to get married, but in reality she WANTED to get married because she wanted to be loved by someone who respected and treated her well, all of this modern day nonsense is getting in the way of the classic fairy tales. Props to you for actually finishing the movie I would have quit by now
Yes exactly! They tried to make a classic story “woke” instead of trying to flesh out the characters and tell a real story. There is nothing inherently regressive in the original story.
@@riddley-6273 yea she didnt MEAN to get married to the prince, she did meet a man but she had no idea he was a prince nor if he even wanted to marry her. She went to enjoy herself for just one day before going back to her old miserable life. I think we forget that Cinderella just goes back to what she knows in the end. We need to stop trying to girlboss Cinderella, was she saved by a man? Yes. Is that a bad thing? No because not only does this man love and respect her so much that he went looking for her after just two meetings BUT he got her out of her toxic living situation. Im sorry that prince Charming is a man but you have to remember the life that Cinderella was living, that girl deserves absolutely nothing less than being treated like royalty after being constantly abused and used as a maid in her own home.
I can't get over the fact that Dylan from Dylan is in trouble liked every single joke you didn't and you like all the ones he didn't. That was so funny to me
It sounds like this movie was written by people who have never seen a musical and created it based off theatre tropes that they’ve heard of. And then were given an insane budget. I need Hannah’s review of Dianna the Musical!
This literal movie was produced and involved with James Corden who is a LITERAL ACTOR that has been in broadway musicals and several musical movies. LIKE WHAT??
Aaahahah 😂😂😂 But to be fair, it somehow actually works in Glee (most of the time at least), because it fits the story and setting and even when it looks a bit forced or over the top sometimes, it's Glee, I mean... I'd say it's supposed to be a bit cringy. That's what Ryan Murphy tries to do in every show, isn't it? To make it different, controversial, no matter how weird it actually ends up being.
@@maggie3659 also, most of the time, the songs worked! not to say that some of the songs in this movie don’t, but it also has a lot to do with the song choices and how they fit the actors vocal ability and the plot. like, no other performance of ‘smooth criminal’ can top glee’s. glee tries to make almost every song they use a full blown performance, and for me, it just doesn’t work with this movie. (also not to say that the actors and performers in this movie aren’t talented, ryan murphy just somehow worked his magic to make glee what it was)

Why do I feel like this would've been a perfect film for Hannah and Dylan(isnotintrouble) to have done as a collab. Would love to see these two together!
"she looks like her normal self, just wearing a pretty dress" is exactly how I felt about Anna Kendrick in Into the Woods. Could they not do ANYTHING with her hair and makeup to make her look less like a modern everyday girl? The dress was amazing. They rest of the styling was awful. Same with Emma Watson in BatB. I never saw her as anything but Emma Watson in pretty costumes.
This is why my favourite Cinderella is the 2015 Disney version. The costumes were top tier, the make up, the hair, everything was so over the top without being too much. Sure it wasn't a musical but everyone looked so good. Cate Blanchett is just *chefs kiss* she killed every single outfit in that movie.
Thank you for pointing out how compressed Camilla’s voice sounds-I always found that her voice was good, but something always seemed.. off. Compressed was exactly the word I was looking for.
But then in some clips she sounds great. I think they should have done even more takes with her and tried different things, and completely replace whoever mixed and recorded the vocals. Camilla is a good singer, just not when she sings certain ways for lack of a better term.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hannah slowly lose hope in a video before. And I’ve watched all of her Riverdale vids. It reminds me of Dylan (in trouble). It’s so…strange yet hilarious 😂😂
I love how even though you absolutely hated it, you still managed to compliment everyone. I really enjoy how much positivity you put out into the world.
My step-dad and I HATED the queen cover, and my mother was upset with us because she loved it. I just sent her this video the second you mentioned them being pitch-y and over-acting saying, "This TH-cam voice coach hates it too!" Lolol! Also, I loved the Material Girl cover. It is so bat shit insane that I feel like you can't not love it for merely existing. Lolol
This "TH-cam" coach doesn't get it. She's obviously not an expert on anything fun, campy, and tongue-in-cheek. Camilla, Nicholas, Idina, Billy Porter - and the whole cast - were perfect. Just perfect. I loved the whole thing.
The movie was a hit for Amazon but it's just not very good. I hated the songs and jukebox style music and didn't bother watching it e.g... this video tells me I made a great decision. I was annoyed watching the scenes and hearing the music too 😂. Not shocked at all the budget went to Billies dress 😂.
"I malfunction when it's a musical setting but it's so pop" THANK YOU! This has been and will forever be my issue with certain musical and broadway adaptations. There are some that keep to the original musical style, but there's just something about pop singing styles and techniques in musicals that doesn't work for me.
Unpopular opinion that agrees with you... but that's why The Greatest Showman jarred me. Phenomenal cast, costumes, choreography, setting, acting... And great music, the majority of which did NOT fit with the setting AT. ALL. I cannot tell you how triggered I was as a classically trained vocalist, that they announced Jenny Lind IN THE MOVIE as an opera singer... and she proceeds to sing pop. I love listening to the music, but only outside of the movie. (There are exceptions... From Now On gave me full body chills.) Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
I feel like Six: The Musical manages this very well, with a pop-like singing style which shouldn't go with its time period but it oddly does! Maybe you should give that one a watch :)
I literally just watched this movie a few days ago only because Nick galitzine is in it. I didn’t like the writing at all but the singing was what got me though. Nick singing had me swooning more for him than I already from red white and royal blue
Cinderella is officially depression the movie. It broke Hannah! It managed to completely remove her usual happy upbeat personality and made her annoyed at songs! It´s kinda impressive.
Everything Hannah said in this video is how I felt throughout the whole movie. Asking over and over again “oh my god are they singing again”, “where the hell is this plot going” were all things I asked myself while watching this pain staking two hours of a movie and I made my poor bf sit through the whole thing…

so far, this is my favourite video from you, Hannah. i absolutely loved seeing you just be completely honest about what you thought instead of having to pretend you like most things just so people don't get offended. I think this is your channel and you should be able to freely express how you feel (obviously without being rude). I really liked seeing you completely own your own channel.
As far as I'm concerned one of the best live action adoptions of Cinderella was the one from 2015, with Lily James as Cinderella, Richard Madden as Prince Charming, Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother, and Helena Bonham Carter as Fairy Godmother. I know it's not a musical like this one is but it was so good. Not to mention that I have a huge crush on Richard Madden to this day lol. And Cinderella transformation scene in this movie is nothing compared to it.. They just made it so magical and I am disappointed that this is a thing. I mean it's not too bad it's just like disappointing to me because of the one that they made in 2015. Also Cinderella's dress in this movie is far less magical than the 2015 movie.
I have found myself watching a lot of them and they appeal to me for different reasons, however, Ever After will be my main Cinderella movie. I have watched it a million times and I just love Drew Barrymore. The other ones I like are the Hilary Duff, the Lucy Hale(I love the soundtrack to be honest), There's one that's with Prime called After the Ball and it's more fashion designer based. It's a little cringe but I think it's cute. Once in a blue moon I might watch the Selena Gomez one.
Hannah should react to The Barbie movies! My top picks are: "Barbie as the Island Princess." "The Princess and the Pauper." and "Barbie and the diamond castle." AYO 1.1K LIKES TYSM
It’s like they didn’t have a script and told everyone to do whatever they want. Just gave them a list of songs and said go for your life. Even though it has many good people in it.
@@tellmewill I wouldn't be so harsh on the actors cuz they were singing live and the gods know how harsh it feels to sing the same song over and over again.
I've avoided having to sit through this movie by watching a bunch of people react to it, and now I feel like I've seen the whole thing without wasting any more time and money than I have to. Thanks Hannah!
You are low-key better than most of the acting coaches xD honestly… because to really convey you character’s message you need to know the motivation, what do you really want to express - direct message. Only then you can try to ‘act it out’. Many people dont understand this. So yeah, thanks for that xoxo
For me they just really didn't find a style at all. I mean having Broadway and pop singers together and using them interchangeably is already a problem and it just doesn't feel right. The covers? The pop editing on the vocals in a musical? It's uncomfortable.
I feel there should be a way to use Broadway and pop singers and make it work but... this just wasn't it lol it could have been a cool collab but Billy was so wasted in this movie and Idina had no special moments either. The whole thing was a messy let down.
This was absolutely one of the best things I’ve ever seen. Not the Cinderella movie. That was a trainwreck. But watching you feel all my feelings on camera was gold. Thank you for this!!!
you described EXACTLY how i’ve been feeling about her voice lately, she’s such a good singer but something’s clearly not right, like her notes used to always be so effortless and now it just sounds strained and seems like she’s having a hard time hitting anything remotely high (which was one of her strongest points) and it’s just kinda sad to see that happening to her honestly
as stupid of a choice as it was to have the stepmother's song exist, it's genuinely the only one that had really enjoyable music for me in the whole musical
Yeah, I liked how it conveyed how the stepmother wasn’t actually good or bad, just desperate as hell and apparently regarded getting married as the only way out of a hellscape homelife.
Why is it stupid? Idina is basically the poster child for playing the whole "The Villain isn't just a villain but a complex person with emotions" archetype. It has nothing to do with the original but that's not what this remake was supposed to be anyway really. Anyway, she sounded incredible in that song, they all did.
@@fiadhmacnamara1871 I also loved how it wasn't entirely about her escaping, but also wanting a better life for her daughters because she did care about them.

You pretty much summed it up at the end there. Although I don’t think enough people are talking about how the outfits didn’t really fit any sort of theme or time period, pretty much at all. The clothes have been one of my favorite parts to see in all the remakes, but while these were pretty, none of them really seamed to fit with their environment, with the exception of the godmother.
@@Cllocopine Considering I specified "Grimm original", your whole comment is arguing about semantics. But go off, king

You know it’s bad when you’re like Idina, please don’t sing
All this movie did was make me want to watch Ever After with Drew Barrymore. Both the main characters actually had wants and development AND they actually had a relationship before they "fell in love". The step mother even had a moment where you sympathized with her despite her remaining an evil character throughout the movie!!! And if I really wanted to listen to a musical version of Cinderella, I'd go watch the 1997 one with Brandy!!!

Ever After is my all time favorite movie! Soooo good!

Honestly I just turned my brain off and that seemed to make the experience quite enjoyable.
it’s funny, cause i’m ACTUALLY in the middle of a psychotic break, and uh. yep. /lhj
The best thing about this movie is this review of it.
I’m a fashion nerd and the lack of acknowledgement of a grounding for the historical inaccuracies caused me physical pain
At least in Ella Enchanted they explain such historical vagueness as being different species aesthetics, and in Bridgerton they were clear that the regency fashion was influenced by different racial histories. This was just painful
The film was made to pander to the new climate of being politically correct which isn't bad its when its forced

They really said "let's remake Ella Enchanted" and failed
This is also a petition for Hannah to watch Ella Enchanted if she hasn't already! Like if you agree!
Let's just go watch the original instead
Why do people add 'like if you agree' to comments. Thats LITERALLY how the comments work.

@reale consapevolezza about being useless? Sure, I guess so lol
I thought Gwen was Ben 10's cousin
“How do I simultaneously feel like this movie is going NOWHERE but is also incredibly rushed?”

Props to you for actually finishing the movie I would have quit by now
oh yeah they completely bastardised cinderella as a character
Of course amazon would just promote "girl power" as just being a business owner and engaging in capiralism
Yes exactly! They tried to make a classic story “woke” instead of trying to flesh out the characters and tell a real story. There is nothing inherently regressive in the original story.
@@riddley-6273 Yeah, she wanted to have fun, the fact she met someone that loved her and didn't put her down was a nice extra from the ball

For me they just really didn't find a style at all. I mean having Broadway and pop singers together and using them interchangeably is already a problem and it just doesn't feel right. The covers? The pop editing on the vocals in a musical? It's uncomfortable.

Yeah, I liked how it conveyed how the stepmother wasn’t actually good or bad, just desperate as hell and apparently regarded getting married as the only way out of a hellscape homelife.
Why is it stupid? Idina is basically the poster child for playing the whole "The Villain isn't just a villain but a complex person with emotions" archetype. oh cats was worse 100% at least cinderella brought us some hot vocals at parts. cats brought us floating feet.
Honest question btw, what was confusing about it
Cats storywise in the movie is worse because it's completely ruined by the inclusion of a protagonist. Cinderella had a bit better of a plot
@@lukas309984417 idk.. But for me, i like Cats vocal / musical performance way better than Cinderella. I feel like there is more balance and stability on that. I mean ... I watcher Cats 4 times.. Probably I'm just accustomed to their voices at this point
@@Sarah-mw2hi IMO, both are bad. Surely not worthy of an award. But I feel like giving Cats a bit more credit because at least, Cats has some teeny weeny bit of character development. And at least they're stories and songs lineup make sense. But yeah ... Both are bad..
I feel you should really watch “Happy Feet.” Their rendition of “Somebody to Love” was beautiful! Brittany Murphy was amazing in that film!
I totally agree!!!
YES I ACTUALLY HEARD BRITTANY MURPHY'S VERSION BEFORE QUEEN'S
And Happy Feet 2 for Rhythm Nation

I was looking comment about Happy Feet 🙂
16:44 You struggling to not call that jaw possession of a run what it is hahahahaha God bless you, Hannah
"Wait, wha...?" got me dead
everything from 16:43 made me laugh so hard i couldn’t breathe. someone let me know if that’s healthy or not😂 i love your channel Hannah!!
She sounds like James Charles on that line 😂😂😂😂😂😂
absolutely no one:
Hannah: NO, IT'S OKAY, I DIDN'T NEED ANY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AT ALL
hahahah, I loved your reaction, as always Hannah. I'm a hannahbee for life.
I love how she just gets fed up when another song starts when she’s a vocal coach, that’s how you know it’s too much lol
I’m so sorry but I cackled when Camilla goes “I’d rather d i e” & Idina is like “…I don’t care🕺🏼”
Cinderella’s dress in particular was a huge let down for how big of a production this was.
I love Hannah's: "I don't care about you. I don't care about any of these characters. You've given me no reason to care!" 😂 and her: "omg and there's still an hour left in this movie." 🤣
I was WAITING for the “am I wrong” riff. I wasn’t disappointed
“NO YOURE NOT IN LOVE” LOLL 🤣🤣 I’m dying at the amount of sass and disappointment in Hannah’s face
You said exactly what I was thinking. Watched your video straight after I watched the movie for the first time. Your video was so much more fun to watch!
