    Back in the 70s around 75 I was 7 and would see my dad every Sunday those days shops on Sunday were closed except newsagents etc,there was one in hanworth near feltham we would stop there to get some pop and snacks and goto London airport to watch the aircraft he had full range of matchbox cars and kits dad would give me pocket money and I would buy a kit or a diecast ,I built quite a collection of kits in my room and you didn’t have to paint as they came in two or three colours by then mum taught me how to glue them and Sunday afternoon if it was cold or wet or my mates were out instead of riding my chopper or grifter or going to the adventure where I lived in west Ken estate I would be building my kit after Sunday roast yum,big match would be on and nan and grandad would be there too very easy for a kid of the time to make and the M shaped stand it came with great memories Gary great time to be a child too 70s rocked
    Cheers
    Mark 😊😊

    This build and similar ones on other modeling channels really takes me back to a simpler and in many way more enjoyable era.

    Thank you Gary. Perfect video which reminds us to enjoy our hobby instead of trying to get it perfect all the time.As you say an older kit of its era but they built well,i dont remember any flash,good instructions that would give some modern companies a run for the money and generous decal options. People can scratchbuild a few details and use a scriber to add or improve lines if they wanted to but why not just build,paint and enjoy sometimes. Weathering is fun but theres plenty of new aircraft.The paint isnt going to be peeling off after 3 months!!!! Its specially designed so again just sometimes keep it simple and subtle. Thank you for the PVA temp glue idea for decal cutting. Very clever. Thank you Gary.No.1 channel. Enjoy your break buddy

    Beautifully built kit. I think that most 1:72 scale Matchbox kits were far better than 1:72 scale Airfix kits of the same era.

    Wow!!! What a lovely first build for the Matchbox Challenge series Gary.
    Great video and you've not only got a cracking end result, but I also loved how detailed those pilots came out too.
    Those weights are great as I also use that type on my kit builds when needed.
    Great idea making sure that the gear door decals ended up in the right position. Bet that bought you out in a cold sweat while carefully cutting round those. Lol.
    I hope you get as much enjoyment with all the other Matchbox kits that Im sending you mate. 👍
    Well done. 👏👏👏

    Great start to the series! I have never built a Matchbox kit - the local bricks and mortar has a 2nd hand shelf with some, BUT, they are a bit pricey - seem to be cult status 😊

    Looks great Gary - good job!
    Matchbox often chose unusual subjects (Siskin, Fury Lightning T5 , B26) for example & I've fond memories of their kits 😊
    As for flying in a Hunter, apart from a flight in a Chipmunk, my Air Cadet flights were all transport Aircraft (more fond memories) - so you were very lucky to get a ride in a such an Aeroplane!

    Great looking Hunter Gary. I totally get the nostalgia effect mate I'm trying to find and build all the kits I built with my Dad back in the mid 80s/90s - well to be honest he built for me while I got in the way n glued myself to everything

    Hi Gary, yes a lovely aeroplane.
    When I've been in the tyre shop watching the fitters, I've noticed them cutting the stick on weights to get just the right balance. You could use a similar technique to squeeze those weights in the space.
    In the guidance notes, they always say to clean any paint off the surfaces to be joined. Have you ever had any problems sticking to paint (eg the pilots in their seats)?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never really had problems with glue and paint although normally I’d try to have a clean-ish surface. The weights I use are iron so not easy to cut - I think car tyre ones are lead.

    • @emmabird9745
      @emmabird9745 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garys_stuff Hi Gary. Car type ones are certainly more flexible than iron. Whenever I'm in the tyre shop incidentally I pickup a number of the old weights they've stripped off and simple thown down. Nose weight for free. I think the SG for lead is about 11 whearas for iron its about 7.8 so more weight for volume. That would certainly help for that Gannet you had to stuff just about every crevice of!
      For my Whirlwind, I definately used lead because I cut it off the bit of old water pipe we took out of the house years ago and kept just in case. Few people will have access to that solution though if you get the flashing on your roof renewed you could hang on to that as a source. For all those out there also reading this wash your hands after handling lead!
      As for beauty, I have to say the EAP (experimental aircraft programme, or Emma's aeroplane) because there is a bit of me in it under each engine. Same with the Typhoon I suppose.

    Gary, I got back into modelling & your videos have been very helpful! Thank you for that! We have something in common if memory is correct, other than this great & somewhat frustrating hobby-obsession we have, our fathers both served on the HMS Ocean, though my father being older than yours served in tail end of WWII, he was on the Ocean when Eric "Winkle" Brown landed his Vampire on deck. I'm not sure if you are aware that there is a book called H.M.S. Ocean 1945-1957 Peace time warrior by Joyce Knowlson, it is limited printed, definitely worth having in a collection. Any questions, just ask. Apparently as I live in Australia & we use the metric system & you requested imperial thumbs up. I owe you some thumbs up. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Thanks again & keep up the good work!

    Excellent buld Gary, especially liked the pilots. I've never built a Matchbox kit. I'd stopped making models before they came onto the market and had disappeared before I got back into it.

  • @randalscott7224
    @randalscott7224 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice nostalgic build Gary! Pity the pilot's mask was in position, or you could have painted a huge grin (like the one I would have had in your position) on one of them. 😊
    To slightly misquote "The Life of Brian": "You flew in that? You lucky, lucky b******!"
    We really do need a new tool Hunter twin tub, in every scale! Looking at you, Airfix.

      I’ve been very lucky to have flown in a few fast jets, but this was my first and by far the prettiest!!! When you’ve only felt the push of a BAC 1-11 leaving Luton and you then get an Avon in the small of the back it is pretty impressive!!!

    • @randalscott7224
      @randalscott7224 ปีที่แล้ว

      @garys_stuff Very fortunate! I've sat in a few, the first being a Gnat (lifted into it by my Dad, it was THAT long ago!) Never flown in any of them alas.

    Another cracking video, Gary. I've made a few of the Matchbox 1:32 plastic car kits, sometimes they can be a bit frustrating as they don't necessarily fall together like a Tamiya kit, but they look really good when they're built.

    Beautiful build, Gary. Totally get you with regard to the more simplistic details and less sharp moulding of older kits, but, I think, if ypu use modern techniques and equipment, ypu can make a decent model. Anyway, I think they look great as nostalgic pieces.

    I built an old Matchbox Hunter T7 like this one 15 or more years ago. Loved it, might still have it somewhere, one of the model builds of my youth I was more proud of! Still have the Matchbox Lightning T5 and Navy Wessex to do sometime. Might do the Lightning in the Saudi colours.

    These Matchbox kits are great little kits looking back now l think they were better ever than Airfix for the time these actually came in a box when Airfix was using plastic bags shame the company never survived it would be interesting to see what they would be turning out now 👍

    I always liked the glass smooth finish on the Matchbox kits, some modern aircraft kit surface finish makes the finished model look like they're built of cast iron.
    Airfix are you listening?
