  • In the second video I hand paint the Airfix 1/72 GR.1 Harrier. Using the paint that is packaged with the kit I set about painting the model kit as simply as possible. I also use the decals in the kit to finish off what turns out to be a lovely little model. This video is perfect for those learning to build and paint model kits or those who are getting back into the hobby.

    My grandfather was a navy pilot back in the 60s and his last yrs in the Royal Navy he spent in the harrier Gr.1 ever time I visit I sneak into his office and I’m always mesmerised over his models and dioramas he has built, his own little battlefield, I visited recently and helped build a squadron of harriers and Jaguars for our battlefield and it takes me back to when we build our first kit back in 2010 of a spitfire MkV

      Wow.. what a time to be a Navy pilot! Definitely try and get as many of his stories recorded or noted down! I bet he has great memories from his flying career! Love the Harrier.. hoping to build a Kinetic Gr.3 soon. Thanks for commenting 😀👍

    Nice job - this is how models used to be built, usually on a coffee table or even the floor, with some newspaper down. Very happy memories, indeed! It's been a few years since I used the hairy stick for more than just detail painting, maybe I should do it again, just to keep my hand in - you've reminded me that it can be done, and how much fun modelling can be! Thanks for the videos, I'll watch out for more.

      Thanks Ian. It went surprisingly well even using the kit paint! Glad the video brought back those memories that most of us have of our early model exploits.. paint everywhere and glue on the canopy haha. Funny enough just doing a video using Humbrol enamels which is a real nostalgic hit.. that should be my next upload. Thanks for checking out my channel and videos, glad you like them. Cheers

    a very good illustration of how to get the best from kit building without the plethora of tools etc that require some skill to use well. Like, I suspect, many others, if I simplify my approach to match my skills [with incremental improvement sure] with the requirement of the kit, I can achieve better results!
    excellent video guides!

      Thanks John, It’s been great to just enjoy getting back into the hobby and not heaping on the pressure too much. I think what you mention about incremental improvement is exactly right! Each kit improves the skills and that’s very satisfying. Best

    Pretty cool, I’d say buying a large flat brush is a must, when I got into the hobby I hand painted everything with a brush for around a year and the larger brush makes it soooooo much easier to get a nice consistent base coat. For camouflage I’d use a round brush for the edges then a flat one to fill it in. I would work with extremely thinned paints like a glaze almost so I would do around 6 coats that are super super thin and I would get nearly an airbrushed result

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers, yes it’s amazing the results you can get with just brushes. I thought some videos on just using brushes would be a good idea because it’s a skill worth practicing and a good start point. Airbrush for me next.. I’m really not that skilled with them yet! Hopefully I can get some good results and then do a video on what I learned 😀👍
      Thanks for commenting and watching my vids. Cheers

    The Airfix F-16 starter set got me into this hobby again and i must say that i'm quite surprised with the build (fit and included paint), so to 'hone my modeling skills' i'm thinking to get me some more starter sets :)
    You used a primer? If so, which one did you use?

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes definitely starter kits are good for getting back into the hobby. The Airfix 1/72 Spitfire was a dream to build.. I might try the Hurricane at some point.
      If I’m doing a quick build I’ll use off the shelf Halfords undercoat (grey).. it’s never let me down. I’ve tried cheaper brands and they are hit and miss. If I’m doing a more advanced build I’ll airbrush Vallejo or Mig ammo undercoats.

    What paint/thinner ratio works best?

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the paint.. sometimes its 50/50 and other times 70-80 water to 30-20 Paint for Acrylic paints. I'm still trying different ratios on Enamel.

    • @jamess8504

      @@modkitmayhem so what would you say works better for brush painting enamel?

    • @modkitmayhem
      @modkitmayhem  ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, I'd go for odourless Winsor and Newton thinner (Sansodor) or basic Turpentine. I'm sure every Enamel colour will have a sweet spot in terms of thinning ratio. I'd guess Matt needs thinning more than Gloss.

    • @modkitmayhem
