I remember growing up as a kid and thinking the most EPIC, rich people had the following 3 things: (1) a trampoline, (2) a pool, and (3) a 2-story house. The ULTIMATE trifecta for my childhood self.
Growing up it was anyone who shopped at mall stores. Limited Too, Holister, etc. anything in the mall. Now as a mom I feel like it’s the stroller or the wagons other moms have.
Would love to see an episode on wealth shaming. Kind of the opposite of what today's episode is about. When people say "must be nice" or other passive aggressive saying towards someone who has accomplished a certain level of wealth. Not flaunting it
I ended up in the ER last May and needed emergency surgery. The doctor who was going to do the surgery walked in and stood next to my ER bed. I turned looked at him realized he wasn’t a nurse and said, “You must be my doctor?” His response was, “NO, I am your Surgeon!” I got this confused look on my face looked back up at him, and said, “But don’t you have to be a doctor to be a surgeon?” I thought the ER doctor was going to pee her pants laughing when I said this, and the nurses were busting up laughing too. The SURGEON smiled kind of embarrassed as he realized I had just called him out and said, “Well yes, I do have to be a doctor to be a surgeon”. I told my sister this story, who worked in healthcare and she said, that the surgeons all think they are better than all the other doctors. They are SURGEONS! Hahahaha!
I have been more impressed with doctors that AREN'T surgeons but have to figure out what is wrong with people through only the patient's layman's descriptions, usually a lack of recordkeeping by said patient and blood tests that can mean any number of things. Surgeons get to actually LOOK at the problem directly! lol
Northern MN here, -60F hits different George...goose down coats definitely keep you warm. I would never personally buy a $1000 anything when it comes to clothes but my winter coats are the most expensive clothes I own.
I think differentiating clothing and gear should be a thing. Motorcycle gear is a good example as you need to keep yourself safe so that costs some coming. A budget friendly outfit is probably sitting at $500 base. Anything less and you’ve missed a component or picked up sub par quality.
I used to care about brand name clothing and cars in my youth, now a day all these stuffs don't mean jack to me after I'd discover financial independent. Now, I focus heavily on saving and investing. I drive 2003 and 2008 vehicles and feels so great without having any car payment.
I love low-key quality. I own several watches that cost thousands and most people have no clue what they are. Only real enthusiasts spot them and I usually have great conversations with them.
I love you both! Thank you for making my mornings less boring 😄 and giving me something fun to watch or listen to. Also a shout out to all the Ramsey personalities! Thank you for all you do! 🥰 You've definitely helped me out in my life too in so many ways with all the advice.❤
Yeeeessss! I actually would love to have someone clean my house, but think it would make me feel kind of guilty. It's a weird feeling to want that, but not want to be one of "those" people, even though there's nothing wrong with having money for a house cleaner 😂
6:40 when Rachel says “people say ‘where do you summer’ I’m like oh my gosh, you’re on like a different level.” George *with great disdain*: “I’m not friends with those people”
I look forward to these episodes every week! I guess my status symbol is that my husband and I travel a lot. People ask us how we do it but the truth is most of those people are paying student loans and car notes. However, we don't have car payments and we didn't take out student loans for college or my husband's MBA soooo it's not that we have more money than others our age, it's that we don't spend it the way they do.
When I was newly married I had a friend who had elementary age kids. At their school they had an orchestra and there was a kid who came every morning before school but he couldn’t afford a violin. It was only a few hundred dollars. I told myself I would make sure my kids could play an instrument if they want. I just got my son a trombone this year and plan on buying an instrument for a kid in need in the next few years.
Growing up in a very small town, the status symbol was having a home built. Didn't realize until I was in high school that people thought my parents were rich.
Great show. I like the perspective of what is truly important in life. One status symbol that was popular when we raising our family, was the stay at home mom. Because it meant you could live on one salary.
Rachel, I was just at the Dallas Museum of Art for the Impressionist Movement: From Monet to Mattise. I was so surprised to find out Picasso, Degas, and Van Gough all died in the 20th century! I too thought they are all 16h/17th Century artists!
I live in NYC. I have a $1.7K Canada Goose jacket. I caved and purchased one in 2023. 😅 I saved over a year and used my birthday cash for it! As for warmth?….its subjective. I wear skirts in the winter no matter how cold it is so the Canada Goose (CG) jacket doesn’t keep me warm at all. In jeans…it’s better…. It’s part status and part warm. The other jacket that’s popular and comparable to CG is “Moose Knuckle” and the price is slightly cheaper but it’s there!
*Canada Goose - and my husband has had his Canada Goose coat for 10 years and it still looks new. (We live in Toronto). Granted, it was a lot cheaper 10 years ago, the prices now are insane. There are so many other options on the market now that are just as warm. I also find it HILARIOUS when people wear their Canada Goose coats at like +5 degrees celcius - it's made for cold, cold weather, not +5 in the city, weather. You know those people are sweating and hating their lives.
In my immediate neighborhood, the status symbols are as follows: 1. In ground pool 2. Underground sprinkler system for watering yards and plants 3. Natural gas generator for emergency power. I don't have any of these, unfortunately. I am tempted by the generator, I have to admit. Great episode!
We put in an inground sprinkler system a couple of years ago, but not for the "status." It was strictly for convenience. I water three times a week in the summer. It was an all day proposition, and tied up my entire day where I couldn't leave the house for long because I had to drag the hose in a bit. We saved up and paid in cash.
@@bettedavis9261 Very good. I understand about needing one in order to help save your yard. Since my husband had a stroke back in November, he is no longer able to pull hoses across our yard now. So I might have to consider an underground sprinkler system in the future. Something to think about…
@@deborahmaehs7604 I highly recommend them for people who water their lawns on a consistent basis. They can be pricey, but they are well worth it. I especially love mine when we verticut and overseed in the fall. Dragging the hoses all around three times a day for ten minutes a spot was a time killer. Best of luck to you!
Definitely debt free for me. We look way less than average but have no debt whatsoever. But I know. I still think that pride goes before a fall and try to see it more as a blessing and result of hard work. I feel we can be in danger of using that as our worth instead of we have worth because the Lord choose to create us. I strive to feel that because when you do you treat others as such. Hope that makes sense. Humans are worth something just because the were chosen to be created. Isn't that just awesome!🌞
Yesterday I ran into a former co-worker at the post office. We both drive used vehicles and don't care about vehicles as status symbols. He said that one of his team members asked him about the age of the truck that he drives. When he told him that it was a 1998 truck but still runs great and is dependable, the student told him that it was older than any of the kids on the team. We both got a good laugh out of that story which also served as a teachable moment for the student. Don’t let the world and its status symbols define your worth as a person.
Episode idea: Will you discuss the stores that push applying for their credit cards! Sometime I have to say no at least 3 times before they stop pushing it.
I don't know why this episode was so funny but the little things like George telling Rachel Nope!! because she mispronounced a word lol. George comparing Uk nannies uniforms to UPS drivers is hilariousssss.
Rachel is a wonderful positive light… I see her evolving in to a leader people will want to listen to and thru listening, there will be a shift back towards healing and family wherever she is heard..*+💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Love you two! Our flex was that I was a stay at home mom. :) I also thrift shopped all my life which is now an ecological flex for the younger generations
OMG puka shell necklaces!! Those made a comeback in the 90's... I wouldn't buy ANY modern cars if I wanted to drive a status symbol. They all look like pregnant roller skates. Give me a classic Caddy or Mustang any day of the week...
Jackets or coats have different ratings for cold. You don’t want a coat rated minus 32 in Nashville. When I lived in Eastern Washington, I had to buy coats rated for - 20. It didn’t get quite that cold, but it did get into the minuses, and you need to have a coat rated for that. In Chicago and much of the Midwest you will need a coat rated to probably negative 50 or something like that. I don’t know the cost of making something like that, but it would be a little more expensive than say a negative 20 rated coat. That said, the Canada Goose Brand is probably a status symbol, and you can get other coats rated that low is my guess. But I am not familiar with it so I may be mistaken.

We take amazing vacations. We are about to go on a sabbatical for about 10 months. Thanks to all of you at Ramsey solutions we dont have any debt. (52, 44, and 14 year olds in this family)
Go George! Canadian here- parallel to Chicago. No One here needs to where Canada Goose. It gets to negative 30-35. Not negative 50, unless the Biden Administration makes hell freeze over! Buying Columbia, Eddie Bauer parkas are good enough for $199-399 USD for our winters.
My car is 18 years old, and I would keep driving it for as long as it will go, but I live in Michigan where they salt the roads liberally, so the entire frame is rusted out and now I need to find another vehicle. 😢 Shopping for a used car right now is zero percent fun.
I used to have a finance manager at one of the stores in the region I cover always see me and say “can’t hide money”… and I literally was driving my cash Ramsey car and a coach purse from tbe outlet mall lol. 😂 but somehow he knew… I am pretty much borderline millionaire.
Canada goose jackets are a higher quality which keeps you very warm, it’s a investment piece. When you live in a cold country like Canada it’s a necessity
I have a Canadian jacket from a brand called “Noize” and it is truly the warmest jacket I’ve ever worn. I live in Michigan so it gets very cold here too. They run $300 on average but I got mine on sale for $160ish. Best money I’ve ever spent. Would not spend $800 though.
Minnesota chiming in here. It's the patch! The North Face. Fjallraven. Columbia. L.L. Bean. Eddie Bauer. All JUST as warm as the Canadian parka. It is just a flex.
I'll buy some things that could constitute as status symbols but i buy them for quality. like I buy kinda stupid expensive pants but at my job its worth it because the $15 Dickies only last a couple of months while the expensive ones last over a year. i had to stop buying duluth though because the firehose material bothers my skin too much now so im still looking for replacements.
I dunno which construction workers George has been around, but the welders at the company I work at drive the lifted, six-figure trucks...can't fault them for it they work hard and make bank.
I’m only 15 minutes in so maybe they talk about it later. But I work in Scottsdale AZ and a HUGEEE status symbol here is body/face work. Everyone has lip fillers, face fillers, boobs etc. it’s a status symbol it have ot done here. It’s wild. People talk about getting Botox like it’s getting a coffee.
Kellys and Birkins for upper middle class ladies and the game they play to get it directly from the store💸 one need to prove the brand that they’re worthy to be sold this items! Crazy!
No, these bags are 10k-13k directly from the brand and can be sold for 2x-4x in the secondary market which is probably why you are seeing 50k online.. These are the holy grail bags and are status symbol in the luxury world.. One can be in a massive amount of debt in pursuit of being offered one directly from the store(they dont sell it online) as most stores require you to spend on other items first, which they called “birkin bait” “pre spend”. Some people say these handbags are better investments and outperform the stock market 😂. The brand is being sued in California for link selling..
The backlash for Stanley is that their cups have lead in the bottom, as do most insulated metal containers. If you look at the bottom of most insulated water bottles and cups they have a metal circle, the lead bead is under that so as long as the metal circle remains intact the user shouldn’t have contact with the lead. Some have a larger metal bottom to the cup that would be more difficult to fall off with normal use (like yeti)
I always wanted a rolex but the day i said im gonna buy one i got 5000$ out of the bank went to the store realized they cost way more than that i said na no way

When I was a kid, houses like the Full House house with the stairs that go up in the living room and kitchen was a major status symbol for me.

My car is 18 years old, and I would keep driving it for as long as it will go, but I live in Michigan where they salt the roads liberally, so the entire frame is rusted out and now I need to find another vehicle. 😢 Shopping for a used car right now is zero percent fun.
“I don’t want to put my identity in something that can be taken away.”
In Argentina, one status symbol is playing polo, and owning your own polo team
I used to have a finance manager at one of the stores in the region I cover always see me and say “can’t hide money”… and I literally was driving my cash Ramsey car and a coach purse from tbe outlet mall lol. 😂 but somehow he knew… I am pretty much borderline millionaire.
Lindsey has a fire voice!🤌
Canada goose jackets are a higher quality which keeps you very warm, it’s a investment piece. When you live in a cold country like Canada it’s a necessity
You can get cheaper but they are made by people who aren't paid a living wage. I pay more for good working conditions of the worker
One day a wise man once told me "the point is to be wealthy, not look wealthy"
Status symbol for me, is ordering a pizza with extra cheese or extra anything, or your sandwich with avocado.
Minnesota chiming in here. It's the patch! The North Face. Fjallraven. Columbia. L.L. Bean. Eddie Bauer. All JUST as warm as the Canadian parka. It is just a flex.
Lol my eddie Bauer is for -25 & warmer. I bring out my goose when it goes below that. Usually - 30 Celsius means - 50 with the windchill.
Same here in Dallas!
Status symbol in Texas, having your own land and your own custom built home on that land.
Kellys and Birkins for upper middle class ladies and the game they play to get it directly from the store💸 one need to prove the brand that they’re worthy to be sold this items! Crazy!
A 50k bag is upper-middle in your world?
No, these bags are 10k-13k directly from the brand and can be sold for 2x-4x in the secondary market which is probably why you are seeing 50k online.. These are the holy grail bags and are status symbol in the luxury world.. One can be in a massive amount of debt in pursuit of being offered one directly from the store(they dont sell it online) as most stores require you to spend on other items first, which they called “birkin bait” “pre spend”. Some people say these handbags are better investments and outperform the stock market 😂. The brand is being sued in California for link selling..
“Let’s talk about story time” and then George’s face😂 10:42
My status symbol is my Wrangler. We are so up on ourselves we even give eachother ducks and wave when we see another one. Love my Wrangler
I admire people that hold the CFA Designation, I thing it’s a power move to have those letters
Status symbol: 2 kitchen: 1 indoor and 1 outdoor/open/dirty
Thank you for the update on producer Lindsay! I was worried about her too! Love Skylar though too! 🫶🏻
I think there has been a recent trend with bougie gyms being a status symbol as well.
My status symbol is going on cruises with my family.
From "chicago" my winter coat is Kirkland.
I always wanted a rolex but the day i said im gonna buy one i got 5000$ out of the bank went to the store realized they cost way more than that i said na no way
George! Let's see some status symbol DC shoes or Etnies on those feet. Bring the skate back!! LOL kidding obviously, but love to see when you talk about your skate days. Come to Vermont - we have a very mellow park here in Manchester! Loving the content you guys put out...its been super helpful in life. Keep on keeping on George and Rachel!!!
