How about “I could care less”? People really mean “I couldn’t care less.”
💯
That has always driven me crazy
In most cases, that’s true. But if you care some amount, you would be able to care less. (Theoretically) If someone says “I could care less.”, you could ask “How much do you care now and how much less can you care?”.
Calve, halve, salve same pattern. Valve doesn’t follow the pattern.
How about irregardless and unthawing the meat😂😂😅😅!
If you think it is weird to learn that Picasso died in 1973, how about:
1974: The Equal Credit Opportunity Act
With the passage of this Act, women were able to open a bank account on their own , and apply for credit cards in their own name, regardless of marital status.
When someone mispronounces a word, its likely because they learned it through reading (as opposed to hearing others say it in conversation) That’s never a bad thing! Reading is always a win!
Is the other way around lol
Yes! @journey4us That’s why I pronounced segue wrong from age 10 to 21!! 😂
@@MsZzz9no - you’re thinking of someone misspelling a word. You’d be correct in that case. They said mispronouncing.
@@BarSalad oh that’s right, English is a language that doesn’t facilitate learning pronunciation through merely reading a word, as opposed to Spanish for example
When, at least, two things are compared to be EQUAL to each other they can be the same. For example, The Honda Civic is EQUILAVENT to the Nissan Sentra.
There is/was logic on why said it wrong. 😉
Blinker fluid was classic! Rachel has a good sense of humor :-) And we all knew what she meant by eyeglass thingy.
The snarky Bostonian and the Wholesome southern bell. Keep up the good work.
The Picasso thing is still blowing my mind 😮🤯
Sameeeee! I had no idea either!! I thought he died wayyyyy before the70s!!
Because most photos of him are in black and white. People think, B&W old, forgetting they're looking AT PHOTOS!
Agreed!!
“Could of” drives me nuts 😂
It’s understandable though, if you say could’ve out loud, it sounds like could of vs could have.
@AngieW-ri6qx could da, would da, should da. . .didn’t.
"Off of" is worse imo. Worse is that quite well educated, otherwise well spoken, people are using.😮
@@bilindalaw-morley161 That's why I never let anyone get away with it... whenever it happens I make sure to make sure everyone's day is ruined with a long a reprimand, so they learn their lesson 👌
I swear Rachel said “Ketchup Contributions” 😂😂😂
It's the middle Tennessee accent
Yeah, she totally botched it, in that case it would of been "mustard contributions."
It’s the southern accent 😂
The Fraction and Genuine Leather blew my mind.
The word “alphabet” is just the Greek letters alpha and beta squished together. Laziest word in the world.
I love espresso Martini. I named my pet chicken Eggspresso Marini.
The L in salmon is also silent, but I hear people in South say "saLmon" all the time! Drives me nuts!!!
I hate when people say "I could care less." That could mean they care a whole lot.
The oven drawer we called it the bun warmer, keep breads & foods warm before the meal. Tried that in a gas stove with giant bowl of mashed potatoes...gas flame=top of potatoes caught fire. I went to a job interview as a teen and they asked me to read sets of words. Most people did not know the word Mischievous. I did so I got the job.!
Yes, there is a big difference between the use of that drawer in an electric stove vs. a gas one.
Best way to keep mashed potatoes warm is in a crockpot. Also good for keeping gravy warm. I have them in several sizes!
I'm shocked they can get away with those quasi-IQ tests though they ought to be able to
I said "handy downs" until corrected when I was in college and was told it's "hand me downs" 🙈🤷♀️😂 they both make sense but my mind was blown 🤯
And parents who finish wearing clothes their kids have discarded are wearing hand me ups!😂
People say irregardless a lot when they mean regardless 😆
We got rid of pennies in Canada because of the cost!
Be there or be square meaning is mind blowing for me.
Picasso had a thing on Sesame Street in the 70’s. He painted something on glass. I feel unreasonably proud that I knew he died in 1973.
Lol well if we had been alive and not babies we probably would have known too
George, vinegar is also a natural fabric softer because it helps prevent minerals in the water from being deposited on your clothes. Regular fabric softener just applies a coating of chemicals to your clothes and towels that cause them to become waterproof over time and lock in stubborn stains.
And it’s a natural disinfectant. Have used vinegar as my fabric softener for years. The slight vinegary smell disappears as the clothes dry. Also use a 1/4 C of Borax in each wash for softening. Does not harm colors but really makes whites shine if used regularly.
I love how Rachel and George dive into topics that blend everyday knowledge with money insights! It's essential to stay curious and keep learning, especially when it comes to managing finances. 💡
1:23 that judgemental gaze from George is the best
I did not know until 2020 that dishwashers come with removable filters that you should regularly remove and wash. At that point I had owned various dishwashers for about 40 years. And George, do not worry, apparently salve is pronounced without the L in American English but the Brits do say it with the L. And I was today years old when I learned this thanks to you.
The background laughs make it so much funnier
You guys are one of my weekly staples!❤❤❤
I was 25 years old before I learned you can open up the stovetop to clean under the burners. I remember being amazed by that then! 😂
The word for a cloth covering in 14th century French was naperon, but referring to it in English as “a napron” led to people spelling the term as “an apron” instead, eventually moving the n out of that word for good.
That's cool.
I'm 62, and this is the first reference/correction I've seen on here that I didn't already know from childhood.
George referencing the old school Honeycomb cereal commercials just made my day!
I would always say ‘nip it in the butt’ until my daughter’s pediatrician laughed at me and told me it was ‘nip it in the bud’! I still find myself saying wring by habit. :D
SAMEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! Hahahahah!!! If you ask me, BOTH make since. Butt makes a little more sense, but oh well. LOL!
This is actually a linguistic phenomenon called _eggcorn._
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…I just want Rachel to be my BFF. So great! HaHa.
When I was growing up I always said Pacific instead of specific, my friend’s mom sat me down and helped me
It's a little scary some of the things you two don't know. 😅 I'll have to call George out, he didn't know pickles came from cucumbers. 😅😅 what did you think you were eating. Hmmm. Love watching you two. You're both very down to earth. Keep them coming you two.
My friend thought MJ was asking if 'Eddie' was ok for years 😂 when I told her it was Annie she was like what?
Not me sending “pew pew” to my wife lmaoo 😂
15:40 That’s why here in Canada they stopped producing pennie’s for that exact reason
pennies
Speaking of pickles and raisins, you didn't mention prunes, which are dried plums. :)
I have heard ValentiMes Day more and more; plus marinaTe your meat in marinaDe, not marinade for both the noun and verb.
My husband worked for an appliance manufacturer and he said one of the worst things you can do is put vinegar in (washer/dishwasher)because it may erode the tub lining. 🤷🏻♀️.
I'm not sure that applies to stainless steel tubs. I'll have to research this.
One that bugs me... "Cut and Run".
Cut and run is a GOOD thing. It's a nautical term used when a coming storm is so dangerous it's better to cut your lines and head out to open water ahead of the storm (run), using the storms energy to build speed (when sailboats) and hopefully be able to ride it out rather than being bashed against the dock or beached.
It killed me to hear so many Congressmen use it wrong!
(Remember the John Kerry thing! )
Lol I did hear that as ketchup! The clarification was 100% necessary here
Rachel, you can add Sprite to your flower water to keep them looking fresh longer. My hubby knows to bring me a bottle of Sprite when he buys flowers for me.
Yes my mum always added flat lemonade!
"Have your cake and eat it too" was originally "Eat your cake and have it too"... Which makes WAY more sense, so that is how I say it now!
You definitely missed V R B O
Which I learned as well in a prior episode 🤣
😂😂😂 YES!
Apparently neither of you have ever heard the album ‘Band on the Run’ from Paul McCartney and Wings - released in 1973. Track #9 Picasso’s Last Words. 😀
Listening to this at work when a new episode drops is a vibe
The problem with HSA's is they charge you an admin fee if you are self employed. The account slowly drains when you don't go to the doctor, because you can't afford to pay the out of pocket. You have to plan to be sick on a regular basis to have an HSA and it be worth it. Do I scrap the HSA and save my money at the "Bank of Me" to make it worth it?
0:18 hahaha the look on George’s face says it all. He’s like that clumpy Cocoa powder lol
I would love if Rachel did a conspiracy theory channel
This episode is so educational!! Mind blown
White vinegar in the laundry, yes! Use instead of fabric softener. Much cleaner ingredient!
Can't wait to hear the show. 🎉
Great video and things we can all relate to... It's hard to find the truth until you abandon your agenda!!! The greatest success in life, is on the other side of the false beliefs that we keep trying to prove to be true!
Love learning new things especially about money 😄
My advice to everyone is this : if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances. Be willing to take risks. Saving is great but taking risks puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now. Thanks to larysa Caba, my portolio is doing really great and im proud of the decisions i made last year.
I feel one Of the greatest challenges that we first timers face in the ma rket is that we end up losing all we have, making it difficult to find ourselves back to our feet. My biggest advice is to always seek the services of a professional just like I did when I ventured into it for the first time. Big thanks to Larysa Caba. I now make huge profits by weekly through her services while still learning to stand on my own.
I think she trades for everyone I meet. I met her twice at a meeting in Germany and after her lectures from Ella I had to personally ask her to be my financial advisor. she is definitely good.
I have never seen a trader as open and transparent as Larysa Caba with her clients. The way she decides to make a profit for her clients. she allows you to express your fears and she still rests your fears and that is my respect. I don't normally comment on videos, but this word should be included. she is really cool.
I just looked up her name online. she is licensed with credible certificates and has an amazing track record. Thank you for the message.
I feel this is quite an easy one. You already have her name which makes it easy for you. Just look up her name online. I’m sure you will come across her. That’s how I found her too.
Spontenuity…. Annuity… I think I know where you got it.
To be fair, my kids have an excellent vocabulary, and, like me, a lot of what they learned was through reading, which, like me, caused some funny pronunciation issues. My absolute favorite was my daughter talking about chowse. It kept coming up, and we finally figured out what she was talking about when she spelled it out for us “C-h-a-o-s”. Our amusement did cause a bit of chowse in our house.
Or, maybe... she was subtly criticizing your wife's cooking: _"Man, the chows in this house are awful!"_
😅
Picasso being part of the Renaissance 😂😂😂
This was one ofy favorite episodes for some reason. The penny fact really got to me for some reason.
My favorite money team!
First time commenter here. As a thirty year fifth grade math teacher, I love knowing that the division sign is to replicate a fraction. The idea of a fraction as a division problem is something I introduce the first weeks of school and reinforce regularly. Nevertheless, as we have been reviewing the last few weeks, some students still falter on this. I'm hoping that using this idea is going to help reinforce this next year! I wanted to mention have really appreciated in past episodes when Rachel mentions teachers in such a positive way. That positive perspective is becoming rare these days and warms my hear to hear it. I love Smart Money Happy Hour - both George and Rachel - I discovered it a few months ago and think I've watched most of the back video episodes. :) One more thing I just thought of because of the previous commenter. Growing up, we used to say things like, "we need to unthaw some beef for dinner." At some point someone in my family realized that would really mean we were freezing it, and the proper term would be to just thaw it. I'm not sure if that was just my family or a widespread misuse of the word thaw/unthaw.
I'm glad you clarified because I literally envisioned tons of Ketchup😂😂😂
1:06 Ooo I want an espresso martini mocktail!
What’s sad is that the Feds took away the deduction for $$ spent on financial planner fees a few years ago. Was a big hit to me when I was itemizing . . .
I bought my first house at 18 working 2 jobs that maybe paid what a teacher makes, combined, and i never took a personal finance class... my parents were my teachers.
I realized it was possible Picasso watched MASH (the TV show) and my world was shook. I also thought Picasso was at least a century (or two or three) ago.
I’m with Rachel on how old I thought Picasso was too!! I thought the same as her
22:57 Oh wow, I didn't know that was the correct way to say mischevious! I thought the wrong way was the right way haha
Love the show. Where is producer Lyndsey? Hope she is doing well.
Would love if you guys did a show with guests! I recommend Dr. John as the first one!
Yes, George, but then taxes would go up by nickel amounts instead of one cent or two cent amount
I love hearing the crew in the background laugh
English is my 3rd language and as a child/teenager tricky words:
- Vowels : A, E, I -> sometimes I still need to quietly sing abcdefg to make sure I’m spelling words right
- LYRICS -> Lie-Rick vs Lee-Rick or SNAKE vs SNACK or KITCHEN vs CHICKEN -> drove me nuts
Rachel I didn't realize the Picasso thing either!
I took Foundations of Personal Finance in my senior year of high school!
Personal finance and economics is a graduation requirement in Virginia. Don’t know that taking it changes behavior. Kids still want what they want when they want it. But they can’t say they haven’t been told.
Besties! Love watching you both:)
I had cursive writing, personal Finance, shorthand, typing class.
In my parts, it is michievous (the first way she said it).
Picasso was not of the renaissance. He was a cubist, a modern art form.
7:49 "The bottom drawer of an oven is to heat up plates" 🤯🤯🤯
I love SMHH!
The way the Picasso question was asked made it sound like he was more recent than people thought. Therefore, I guessed 1902😂
...then throw the lemon in the garbage disposal!
7:53 That is not always true about the oven. Read the manual. Some are actually legit storage.
Please keep doing old trends, this was awesome 😂
Where does one place the 1/2 lemon in dishwasher…top or bottom rack or utensil section?
"Just cause I'm smart!"
"UGHHHHHH" 😂
Great show George and Rachel but where is producer Lindsey? What happened to her?
Dave Ramsey and I both have something in common. We both believe in sacrifice. Through sacrifice comes pain and suffering. All is for a greater cause in life. Let the game begin
I've got one.
Sabot. 'Say-Bow'
Yep, didn't know it was a French word. Lol
I love the fact that more schools are requiring finance courses. As a teacher, I wish I had had the opportunity to take a course. My parents were VERY frugal out of necessity as missionaries and didn't use credit cards for anything, but as a teen and young adult, I thought I knew more than them 😂😢.
I was lucky. My HS had an intro to accounting class elective and our teacher said the way to wealth was a CPA with a law degree!
20:50 SAVe! 🤯 Yep, today years old.
TLDR, thanks George & google for teaching me a new acronym.
I’m with Rachel on the Picasso
Going along with “pew pew” if you send congratulations or happy birthday it will add the effect of confetti and balloons
XOXO
O=hugs
X=kisses
*I thought it was the reverse cause X looked like arms and O looks like lips. Lol
The dime thing 😂😂😂 I'd be like "you calling me a 1/10?"
More like smart money halfy hour.
The word irregardless is a double-negative that is grammatically infuriating:
Regard: related to
Regardless: not related to
Irregardless: not.. not related to?! What?!?!?!
When i was 16. A coworker was going to get her oil changed. I convinced her that blinker fluid was real 😂😂😂. The place she went to get the oil changed laughed at her. She was so mad at me 😂😂
‘Could’ve’ is a word
But not could of
Yes, but it’s a contraction of the two words “could have” and not “could of”.
Ahh. I had no idea what she was going on about 😂
People write could of because they don't know that it's the contraction could've.
I think many people confuse Picasso with Michelangelo
