  • sorry chaps i have been away on holiday so i have no footage from the workshop!
    So i thought i would post one of my favourite films from what i can only describe as the golden era of engine development.

    Keith was a genius. Whenever I used to have discussions with him about engineering I came away thinking I knew nothing!. Never met anybody with his total insight since.

    I’ve always admired your honesty and integrity, mate. That and your determination to keep pushing, even if things go wrong. Personally speaking, I think that shows you in the best light.
    Don’t change - and don’t listen to them.
    As for the Cosworth video, thanks for sharing. I hadn’t seen it before and it was fascinating.

    I think in the 80's it was the law that every workshop had to employ someone to whistle a non-descript tune in the background.

    Mate I work with alot of young engineering apprentices and they learn the most when they make mistakes, when nothing goes wrong well that’s easy they go home and forget what they did that day. Keep doing what your doing mate 👍

    Andy, please don't change the format of your videos. When I was in the trade, honesty and integrity were key elements and whilst fessing up to mistakes is never easy, you do get to sleep at night! For me as an avid viewer, I feel like I'm sharing a journey with you in every video, engrossed in the learning process about engines, performance and racing that has been a passion of mine since I was a teen (now retired). Your modesty and positiveness is absolutely delightful.
    I've seen the Cosworth video before but it was certainly good to see it again. Keith Duckworth was a genius, as were so many other engineers/designers/engine builders of his era.

    Hi Andy, glad to see the motorcycle pistoned engine worked well and don't change the format, as it is what makes them so appealing.
    Regarding the Cosworth video, the method of spreading the bock to fit the bearing caps works really well on the Imp rear main caps and can be done without making a special tool (try the studs out a milling m/c clamping set)

    I remember this doc.
    Great era for F1 engine development.
    BMW used the (preferably pre-used old) M10 shortblock. This was a cast iron 5 bearing closed deck inline4. BMW used a ACSchnitzer F2 16valve head on top of that block and a short throw crankshaft to end up with an oversquare high revving 1.4L 16v engine, then they turbo charged the h**l out of it. In qualifying trim this engine would produce over 1200hp ! , infact so much that BMW's own engine dyno could not measure it.
    This was also the time in which they started using computerised engine management (Olivetti was a well known brand.)
    To change the tune they had to 'burn' a new EPROM chip (electronic programmable read only memory). Then they had to swap that EPROM to let the engine run on the new tune.
    It was also a time in which fuel wasn't regulated. They used lots of Tholuene in the fuel. Great nock resistant fuel for high boost engines but it was also toxic!😮

    This was a channel 4 Equinox film, I think it was titled Turbo, but not certain. And it was made near the end of the turbo F1 era, 1986 or 1987 I think, last year of the turbo's was 1988. Absolutely fascinating, I recorded it on VHS at the time an still have it! I have a few momentos of the time, a complete crankcase and heads, crank, piston and rod, and a turbo from the Mclaren TAG Turbo F1 car, which I cherish. The F1 Turbo era for me is unsurpassable, along with group B rally and group C world endurance.

    I was thinking about what you were talking about at the beginning of your video “not a good advert” but didn’t know how to say something a while ago and haven’t for fear of you taking offence. “Oh I rushed that”, “should have taken more care”. They are real world things that happen but you shouldn’t put yourself out there for criticism or being put down unwittingly. I have learnt hugely from your videos but please don’t ruin your reputation building quality products by being overly honest, you know how fickle people are in this world we live in today! Thanks for the videos!

    Remember you have set your self up as an engine guy not a preparation guru.
    Prep. guys buy their engines in.
    One man doing everything is a big ask. Something has to give somewhere 👌

    Don't worry about comments from viewers who have no real world experience. Problems happen in real life and what sets the good TH-cam channels apart from sugar coated TV is the honesty and real time problems. You're showing the pains of not having enough time to do things and not enough time and funds to do all the development you'd like to do. Don't change your format for the sake of a few armchair critics who don't appreciate how much skill you have. It's a fact of TH-cam that the more viewers you get the more you'll stray away from the technically minded subscribers and you'll end up with viewers who expect a false TV style of episode. Just stay true to your original reason for all the hard work you put in to your channel and you'll have to learn to ignore the critics.

    I worked at Cosworth for 15 years, and never seen this video before. I knew most of the names and especially "Alan Morris", he was a good friend.
