The eternal confusion is actually tempting, depending on how confused we are talking. If the confusion is only enough to partially scramble your mind, then it's a lower form of Hell, the moments of lucidity the Hell, the moments of confusion ignorant bliss. The corpse father is fascinating but the simple phrase "higher horror" is so simplistically inconceivable that I can't help but try in futility to imagine what in God's name that could mean.
I imagine it would be the unspeakable things that lay beyond and around the thin fabric of reality, the very things God may have hidden from our sight in an act of mercy to avoid our will to exist from breaking apart.

Actually very interesting thought experiment - it’s so instinctually human to be afraid of death, of no more, but chained to forever consciousness just sounds horrible. The corpse father seemed appealing to me at first - assimilation into an eldritch horror, where do I sign up! - but I believe the faces when they say that their fate is the worst. I think the obliteration/confusion choice is what I would pick. My reasoning is that, while I am alive, the closest I can get to turning my consciousness “off” is sleeping or intoxication. Both of those are pretty close to a state of vague, dissipated consciousness and confusion.
Natural selection tends towards the creation of beings so paradoxical as to desire continued procreation despite the lack of objective goal in the creation and continued existence of self-reflective matter. If we impose death as the end of existence (Or the end of cognizant recognition in any case), then our history retroactively is ultimately forgotten. It is therefor senseless to fear a painful death as such pain is to be erased, as it is senseless to wish to live a long life as that, too will be forgotten, possibly before death even occurs. If there are intelligences(I don't know if you could call whatever naturally resides there "life") in that space, what if they're kind and help you adjust to the "higher horror?" Heck, what if the whole "higher horror," is just another spacial dimension? After all, a 2D person from flatland would feel uneasy on Earth, so it only stands that we'd feel the same somewhere else.

I would take my chances in a different dimension. Over thousands of years the overwhelming and broken reality will become understanding. It will all be like a kid trying to understand Calculus. But at this point, humanity has likely learned how to travel through space. And therefore, colonize at least a few other planets. Sure, getting a spot on one of the ships to Mars is hard... But you can also try getting a ship to the moon, but that place has it's own problems.

Y’know, there’s a book that’s something similar to this, but without the monsters. Death just decided to stop working in a specific country, so people stopped crossing the death threshold. They still get ill, degrade and decay, they just don’t enter the “dead” state. People start illegally taking their practically-dead loved ones out of the country for death to happen. It’s a fun read, at least the first half.
Honestly i would take stuck in a higher dimension. Even with untold horrors there's also new discoveries. Maybe a way to circumvent my fate. Even if small, any chance is better than none. Also i might even find a way to enjoy my eternal fate.
That sounds exactly like the End of Death canon from the SCP Mythos. A project headed by an O5 of the Foundation sends an agent into the domain of the Grim Reaper, and he accidentally neutralizes it, causing this exact kind of immortality for all living things (or things with a brain). Specifically the history of the alternate future in SCP-4935 depicts the Resource Wars, an alternate dimension called the High Horror where an offshoot of humans are threatened to be lost in, all of humanity is stuck in an cube that simulates death or at least painless sleep, and The Corpse Father, AKA a future version of the Profane Adamant, attacks the world in that time. No idea about VR but I can see it having happened as well.

Virtual Reality might sound least shitty, but we don't know how corrupted the sim is getting. Maybe there's glitches that cause the world around you to become a ruinous anomaly? Maybe the bugs will make you feel unending pain? And don't forget the time dilation glitch. If the end of the universe is the only way to get you killed for real, then time dilation causing one second irl to pass in the virtual time of 1 billion years is going to be the worst hell possible depending on the bugs in the sim.

You don't have admin privileges to fix the software issues and even if you could you cant fix the hardware issues that are the crux of the problem. You can no more fix the sim than you could fix a submarine from inside.

*SPOILERS* Knowers of the lore realize that the strat is to get the dimension "ending" in which after 3e+2 years the quest "A way out!" is revealed allowing the tortured to reenter the main area (earth) as the corpse father himself. Of course that allows one to enter the "endgame" but that's reading material for advanced indulgers.
The many: after a life unfulfilling, you simply give up, you let yourself fall to the ground and let everything happen without you, others follow suit, you and the other ‘quitters’ as people call them are stripped of your clothes and ‘disposed’ of in a mass ‘grave’. What they failed to account for was that as you all still breathe, your flesh still dies and regenerates, and being packed so tight together, your skins fuse together, binding you all to each other, eventually the skin is broken through as your very flesh fuses with others, your inability to die allows you all to share your blood equally without consequence, you all remain in this state, unthinking, but functioning, as you all lie in a putrid mass of stinking flesh, something unexpected happens, so deeply fused are you all that your nerve endings end up connecting with others’ nerve endings, you’re suddenly struck with the unfamiliar sensation of being more than one, and so is everyone else, you all writhe for the first time in ages - agony, despair, all sensations of physical and emotion amplified by the sheer volume of bodies in this pit, an unending feedback loop of everything you’d grown numb to, tremendous are these emotions from those trapped in the center and bottom of this mass, their newfound agony charging everyone else, yet, as you all writhe, there is no movement, your limbs all fused into yourself and others, they’re no longer yours nor theirs, as more time passes, your nervous systems intertwine more and more, eventually you experience everyone’s emotions and thoughts as though they were your own, and so do they all, the quiet you thought to escape to is now suddenly excruciatingly loud with everyone’s voice, it started with one then grew to all of them, you all shout for others to shut up only to be told by a thousand voices to shut up as they’re then each told to shut up by thousands more, eventually as you all lament this fate, you begin to reminisce on old memories, memories not your own, memories from others’ reminiscence, yes, you all share your memories through your interconnectedness, your brains may be separate, but your minds are one, you feel everything from everyone and everyone feels everything from you, the pain, the pleasure, the joy, the despair, everything, are these even your eyes you’re looking through? Technically the choice is already made making only the first choice the good one. Considering you can't die you could 100% take it that it is a simulation and everything else is just meaningless, just another layer of existing added on top of another (dimension, brain vat) The only "good" philosophical option to the problem of being forced to live is to die, the next best thing is to not "think" or best said "comprehend" the world. Like if you would say just zone out and have years pass by in seconds that would be 100% better than a constant reminder of conscience like being in a brain vat at 0.1 speed of reality or whatever high horror is.

Actually very interesting thought experiment - it’s so instinctually human to be afraid of death, of no more, but chained to forever consciousness just sounds horrible. The corpse father seemed appealing to me at first - assimilation into an eldritch horror, where do I sign up! - but I believe the faces when they say that their fate is the worst. I think the obliteration/confusion choice is what I would pick. My reasoning is that, while I am alive, the closest I can get to turning my consciousness “off” is sleeping or intoxication. Both of those are pretty close to a state of vague, dissipated consciousness and confusion.
Natural selection tends towards the creation of beings so paradoxical as to desire continued procreation despite the lack of objective goal in the creation and continued existence of self-reflective matter.
If we impose death as the end of existence (Or the end of cognizant recognition in any case), then our history retroactively is ultimately forgotten. It is therefor senseless to fear a painful death as such pain is to be erased, as it is senseless to wish to live a long life as that, too will be forgotten, possibly before death even occurs.

Y’know, there’s a book that’s something similar to this, but without the monsters. Death just decided to stop working in a specific country, so people stopped crossing the death threshold. They still get ill, degrade and decay, they just don’t enter the “dead” state. People start illegally taking their practically-dead loved ones out of the country for death to happen. It’s a fun read, at least the first half.

Knowers of the lore realize that the strat is to get the dimension "ending" in which after 3e+2 years the quest "A way out!" is revealed allowing the tortured to reenter the main area (earth) as the corpse father himself.
Of course that allows one to enter the "endgame" but that's reading material for advanced indulgers.
The many: after a life unfulfilling, you simply give up, you let yourself fall to the ground and let everything happen without you, others follow suit, you and the other ‘quitters’ as people call them are stripped of your clothes and ‘disposed’ of in a mass ‘grave’. What they failed to account for was that as you all still breathe, your flesh still dies and regenerates, and being packed so tight together, your skins fuse together, binding you all to each other, eventually the skin is broken through as your very flesh fuses with others, your inability to die allows you all to share your blood equally without consequence, you all remain in this state, unthinking, but functioning, as you all lie in a putrid mass of stinking flesh, something unexpected happens, so deeply fused are you all that your nerve endings end up connecting with others’ nerve endings, you’re suddenly struck with the unfamiliar sensation of being more than one, and so is everyone else, you all writhe for the first time in ages - agony, despair, all sensations of physical and emotion amplified by the sheer volume of bodies in this pit, an unending feedback loop of everything you’d grown numb to, tremendous are these emotions from those trapped in the center and bottom of this mass, their newfound agony charging everyone else, yet, as you all writhe, there is no movement, your limbs all fused into yourself and others, they’re no longer yours nor theirs, as more time passes, your nervous systems intertwine more and more, eventually you experience everyone’s emotions and thoughts as though they were your own, and so do they all, the quiet you thought to escape to is now suddenly excruciatingly loud with everyone’s voice, it started with one then grew to all of them, you all shout for others to shut up only to be told by a thousand voices to shut up as they’re then each told to shut up by thousands more, eventually as you all lament this fate, you begin to reminisce on old memories, memories not your own, memories from others’ reminiscence, yes, you all share your memories through your interconnectedness, your brains may be separate, but your minds are one, you feel everything from everyone and everyone feels everything from you, the pain, the pleasure, the joy, the despair, everything, are these even your eyes you’re looking through? Are you truly looking at this exact section of pitch-black dirt? Or are these just memories from someone across this pit? Staring at their own section of darkness. As you all writhe in confusion at the obvious loss of self, light floods into the chasm, light that burns your many eyes atop, light that burns everyone’s eyes atop, they’d found you, and they wish to dump more of their ‘refuse’ amongst you, the sensation of light upon your blighted skin, it somehow feels good amplified by the thousand spanning across the pit, you’d inhale, but your lungs are gone, crushed and fused into everyone else, but even as you lie in the bottom, eternally suffocated, you draw breath from atop, every draws breath from atop, and as you all breathe for the first time in eons, a thought goes from one to everyone - ‘get out’, and like fire that thought is replicated by every brain in this mess, every brain that never ceased function for eons, every brain that has been completely deprived of the outside, you all struggle against your fusion, you shove your faces, hands, feet, shoulders, elbows, and knees against the walls of your prison, writhing like an agonized amoeba as you collectively force your way out
When you emerge from the pit, elation dawns on you all, your singular eye not absorbed and hundreds of others’ see the sun and transmit that image to everyone else, those atop with their functional vocal chords giggle and laugh in triumph, their voice for everyone, but as the workers observe you, they see no more than an aberration before them, you’re taken to be studied, your flesh poked and probed as your existence gives refreshed meaning to scientists who are all too eager to cut, stab, burn, shock, scan, and experiment on you. You all cry through the bodies above, but as your voices fall upon them, they fall upon deaf ears. As they cut you open, they forcefully pull out one of your bodies, he is without skin where he fused with everyone, he is no more than a compressed consciousness wrapped in crushed organs and shattered bones, yet his nerves cling to your body, causing an immense agony, one where only one voice spoke amongst the sea of agony, a voice with resolution - “kill”, with that spark, an inferno consumes as you writhe and roll about, crushing screaming scientists under your body, rolling about rips and tears your skin apart from where they cut and burned you, freeing your flesh to move as new skin grows, you form crude limbs from entire clusters of mass, before long, with formed ‘arms’, you grab their instruments of torture and begin self mutilating, carving out new more articulate limbs, carving out a toothless mouth filled with jagged bones, those in the center experience tremendous pleasure as they feel the cool air rush in as you open your ‘maw’, with the alarm sounded, it won’t be long until the military comes to tear you apart from each other, so, with your many limbs, you strip and assimilate the broken scientists into your body, enlightening their isolated minds to the wonders of being more than themself, before then leaving the facility. The land around is remote, you find a nearby sewer drain which, as huge as it is, could never accommodate yourself, so you grab at yourself and tear, ripping your skin and flesh, you howl in agony as you mutilate yourself, organizing yourself in a column of flesh, covered in jagged bones as skin grows over it, you resemble more a millipede with too many legs than you did a blob, in this new form, you skitter into the sewers, your surrounding eyes watching everything as your tens of thousands of finer ‘limbs’ drag your body swiftly
With your escape, word of the missing quitters captivates people, the first real stimulation they’ve felt in eons, they question not where you are, but how you got out, but they need not question where you are, for you are beneath them, watching them across miles of flesh, at times, you find lone people, sometimes walking aimlessly, sometimes injured and given up on, or even quitting themselves as they lie there, you grab them and tear them apart, tearing them however much so they can fit into the grates, stripping them not just of their clothes, but of their skin so they may fit within you, you grow a mile each week, infiltrating cities as you grow longer and more numerous, without death, there’s been no need for the existence of police, and with the strain on resources, nobody complains about the missing people, nor do they question the occasional scream at night, they who wish to remain ignorant stay inside at night, everyone else becomes you, and when there’s nobody else, you figure ways to the next city from your new memories, climbing, running, burrowing your way into another city’s sewers to repeat the process, when you grew enough, you accidentally tore yourself in half, unfazed, you moved in your two bodies, splitting to grow bigger in different cities, your actions go unseen for ages as you grow and split into more colonies of consciousnesses, each one with its own personality developed from growing more, you begin finding stray yous as you hunt, merging with them to exchange memories before splitting, before long, you have unknowingly become your own species of predator, preying on humankind as you infest every sewer, and some of you got emboldened, grabbing onto the undersides of ships or sneaking into shipping containers to be taken across the ocean, you have become a worldwide threat, known to a population who can’t do anything to stop you as you infest their cities, growing so bold to no longer hunt by sewers, no longer are the streets so quiet anymore at night as you skitter across the streets, enlightening whichever isolationists you find, some have even begun coming out to you willingly to be assimilated

Considering you can't die you could 100% take it that it is a simulation and everything else is just meaningless, just another layer of existing added on top of another (dimension, brain vat)
The only "good" philosophical option to the problem of being forced to live is to die, the next best thing is to not "think" or best said "comprehend" the world. Like if you would say just zone out and have years pass by in seconds that would be 100% better than a constant reminder of conscience like being in a brain vat at 0.1 speed of reality or whatever high horror is.
The corpse fathers scream is such an awesome moment. That alone was enough to convince to choose that fate. I hope you have a good day 👍
