Sean Shoobridge I haven't seen too many of these videos, but as a teacher he needs to consider the ideas he puts in people's heads. For example a manikin figure illustrates the block forms of a body but is completely deficient in capturing the subtle nuances of balance or movement. The body has a fluidity of movement that takes careful study. It's fascinating. But I don't think bringing straight lines into something that's more about fluid arcs, is overly helpful. It’s kinda misleading when you say never there are so many rules about what you should and shouldn’t As a beginner not a student I like the fact I use curves it’s a huge part of my art style
Don’t listen to this guy. Some of his videos are helpful, but curves are necessary for gesture and these drawings that he made are drawings of form, not gesture.
It's taught me that straights are very useful in understanding the motions on a fundamental level. Then obviously afterwards you can make it as curved as you want, but knowing how the body is broken down with straights seems to help a lot of people more than using curves as the initial breakdown. Your spine is the only jointed bone in your body that can curve, but even that's typically ever bent at a single point (which you can then round afterwards). But also, he often says do whatever helps the most for you. And in this case if curves help you more, then go ahead and do that. Maybe try this out a few times anyway just to see how it goes though! Experimenting is how you learn after all~. :D
His schtick is basically being over the top with all this stuff. He constantly contradicts himself and gives ridiculous ultimatums like this . I think most everyone gets he isn't literally saying to never use curves. He's basically just challenging our basic understanding of form and making a point about finding the simplest form possible as the base of a sketch.
As someone who's been at it for multiple years and has taken a shitload of courses, yeah this is BS. Maybe a professional artist COULD get away with not using curved lines, but most people are intermediate, and your drawings WILL end up stiff as shit if you don't use curved lines. This dude's whole thing is making intentionally misleading titles and then saying something completely unrelated (usually along the lines of "never be creative, always do exactly this. Also never listen to me") He's entertaining, but he's not the best reference.
@@feckethbalcony3666 While I totally agree he says some pretty ridiculous stuff, this video was specifically related to gesture. He said to never use curved lines in GESTURE (which is still a wacky idea), not to never use curved lines at all.
I'll be honest I love your videos. Even though my passion for game design is greater the Art I'll probably still pursue both, art would probably be a hobby so...I'd probably draw more for fun then getting it perfect all the time. Despite that, I very much enjoy your content and will /try/ to do most of what you say. Like I said, even though I dont intend on pursuing the art industry unless it involves game design (which it could, depending on what I specifically pursue in the video game industry) I'm still going to take all of what you say to heart and improve on my art, thank you.
I tried to start using triangles and straight lines for gesture and get a more dynamic gesture than curves and boxes, who would've thought Edit: not to mention more proportionally accurate.
i love ethans art tips, but i have exceedingly high empathy and anxiety, seeing other fans in his videos can make it difficult for me to pay attention as it gives me the same difficulties of cringe humor. of course theres 0 shame in putting yourself out in that way publicly, but its the gap between my experiences and theirs as if one of us could either be missing shame or have too much causes me to hide my eyes and ears witnessing them. like, it feels the same as me watching impractical jokers, my family loves it but seeing myself in situations i wouldnt stand myself being in just hurts! props to the jokers and the fants of ethans art times and their average amount of bravery that i surely lack in some fronts.

I joined the discord- there’s a lot of nice people and I’m genuinely invested in getting better with the people there ❤️
Can you give me the link
I'm taking a beginner drawing course and my prof told me to stop drawing curved lines and I didn't really get why. This video really helped me understand why he said that! Thanks! :)
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT I'M NOT DOING WRONG?
No... we will always just be stupid little babies.
Even the best of artists do something wrong, it's just a matter of accepting that there's always something that can be improved and learning even more, it's a super great process
@@shiiba8734 no best artists like kim Jung gi never do mistakes...you gotta work on what you type and think more before sending your comments for the world to see you embarrass yourself, thinking you somehow made a deep motivational quote when it's the opposite ...

You know what... All the books I read on drawing always told something of the mysterious 'eyes of an artist' ... "You have to look at the world with the eye of an artist" and stuff.
YOU are the guy who told me little dummy what that means. And I am grateful for that. Just wann let you know this.
I dont even understand the pics and you’re like: ohno I messed up the shoulders that I saw for like three sedonds
Thanks so much for your time and help. I have made a lot of progress
Other videos: "Use curves to make it look flowy and not mechanical!"
Ethan: "DONT YOU EVER! USE CURVES!!"
Just want to say I have seen an immediate improvement on these recent videos, including this one. More concise while still keeping it classy baby. Nice 👶 👍.
Next up: “don’t draw just don’t draw”
mah boi ethan keeping the begginer in the bucket, nice gatekeeping, much appreciated.
“We’ve gotta keep it simple for you-” *whispers* “cause you’re really stupid”
Made me laugh so hard!
Btw, I just have to say that your videos have helped me improve my art drastically. Just over two months i have seen more dynamic characters coming to life.
That first video really cracked me up lmao. Did they really have to do it in a public place I-
Yes, yes we did lol.

Hey Ethan, folks from BaM Animation channel said they love you and would be such a gift to shot a video with you. I think both of you would profit mixing your subscribers fellows. Just saying.
Im from the philippines idol I always watch your videos, thank for yours tips....
4:36 Nani! An oval, huh!?!?
It took me years to get into your humour. It's been a fun day of running through your videos.
haha i beat the notification bell
I can’t stress enough of how your videos really help me improve🥺 tysmmm!!!✨✨✨😁
Next video : Never scribble draw!
These practices help me so much, I even use them to do finished drawings! 😊💕
Question now is who or what is the first love of his life. The dog, his girlfriend, or his art? 🤔
My prayers have been answered omg you probably didn’t see my comment asking for this but I hope you see this one!!!! Tyty tysm!!!!!! You’re one of my fav art channels I learn so much from your approach 😭😭
Next video: NEVER DRAW. dont even try to..
This channel deserves 1 mil subs for sure
I really love when a Quote just comes out of Ethan's mouth
I tried to follow but I burned my house with the solder step...
Instructions too confusing, accidentally committed arson
I tried to follow but I got stuck in the microwave midway, can someone come get me out
I'll be honest I love your videos.
I take this channel as just comedy, he complains about artists that are way better than him.
I love that you call us Stupid.... really funny
I tried to start using triangles and straight lines for gesture and get a more dynamic gesture than curves and boxes, who would've thought
Edit: not to mention more proportionally accurate.
These lessons are really eye-opening. So many new tips I'm excited to try out!
EVERY TIME YOU UPLOAD I SWEAR MY ART IMPROVES TENFOLD WHAT THE HELL-
“In the first few years in your life it’s more important to make mistakes than do the right thing.”
Words of wisdom right there.
I love this guy
i love ethans art tips, but i have exceedingly high empathy and anxiety, seeing other fans in his videos can make it difficult for me to pay attention as it gives me the same difficulties of cringe humor. of course theres 0 shame in putting yourself out in that way publicly, but its the gap between my experiences and theirs as if one of us could either be missing shame or have too much causes me to hide my eyes and ears witnessing them. like, it feels the same as me watching impractical jokers, my family loves it but seeing myself in situations i wouldnt stand myself being in just hurts! props to the jokers and the fants of ethans art times and their average amount of bravery that i surely lack in some fronts.
honestly thank you so much for posting the videos you do. I've been drawing for a webcomic series and following your instructions has made both my positioning in scenes and drawing all together
Thank you so much !!!
I am not on your level, nor do I aspire to be. I watch and subscribe for the sheer entertainment value. You are so amusing and witty! Love it.
Another video with great information! I always learn something and new techniques, the triangles/lemons are genius and really help when somethings off. I hope one day you make enough for a new cigarette.
Lol! Everytime I watch these videos my eyes keeps wandering when the edge of that cig will fall off. Awsome vid.
I love your style of video! Crude and to the point!!! Love it :3 thanks for ur great content!
so i’ve only seem like 4 videos by you and i can’t help but feel my whole life is a lie?! i mean i’m at uni doing animation but dang, some of these things would help a lot, but also so much info is said in one vid so it’s pretty overwhelming! and i see SO many talented people wth!
