What a superb song "Grip" is; they strap on their guitars and play some rock and roll, but it's the sublime keyboards rolling over the top that absolutely make the song.
This is a great listen and a piece of history too !! All the tracks sound really laid back and it's always great to hear how the songs sounded when they were first performed. It's really clear how they were encouraged to speed up , to fit in with the new "Punk" sound at the time . I love the handclaps during Bitching and JJ's voice is so young and fresh too, Thanks for sharing, Laurainblack
Had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't asleep and dreaming as this sounds so different to the sound we all know as the Stranglers (as you say they were speeded up to fit in with punk afterwards ) When I first started listening to this I was convinced it had been tinkered with and slowed down, but after listening to 'go buddy go' I began to accept this recording as genuine and also began to soak it all up and take a trip a little further back into time whilst pleasing my ears. Bloody Love it. 👌
It's clear here they are still more pub rock sounding band , I bet this demo was made summer 1976 later then they gravitate their sound towards punk some months later by winter 1976 . Genius move as they went on to be 1 of the star punk bands in 1977. I like this slower sound though
Plodding, no attitude and not enough Greenfield. Interesting to hear how they got to be the best sound of the late 70s but I couldn’t listen to more than 3 mins.
Its good as a piece of Stranglers pre recording days history . good idea to speed it up , I like the '89 version even better with the beefed up bass . Got this particular set of recordings on a 7inch single , assume it was some sort of bootleg .
Yeah Laura I agree.. I remember 1976 78
Bitching has a really cool Mott / Glam sound. Love these guys.
Thanks at all ! I'm "strangled" since...1979...Very nice! Much appreciated

He sounds a cross between The Beatles and The Osmonds.

The link between Pub Rock and Punk

I've never known a band where each member has Centre off stage
That''s awesome. I love the early Stranglers .
Good to hear this! They sound quite mellow here actually, lol.
Its really mid 70's isn't it, almost easy listening. 😆
oh very nice ! ...was a good idea to finally speed em up though
They had a cool sound here as good as the heavier sound.
Sax a ma phone sound on getta grip waa unexpected.
lol.
Dirtiest Bass ever played! (By a classical guitarist) Love this band all my life! dx
