I'll say it once again: The Most Underrated Band in the history of British popular music.
If the British media weren't so obsessed with appearing hip, and just focused on being honest, they might have treated The Stranglers over the years with the honesty and respect they deserve.
Yes but being punk was to be bad-mouthed in the press you see. They knew the press were a bunch of morons, so punk provided the alternative. They are still a bunch of morons of course, but the punks still sell records, which is more than some of these music journalists still sell in papers. Remember Golden Brown. They couldn't figure that out - lol.
So true.
They had a massive following and feck the MSM - what do they know about respect
We know it, Same with PiL, it's for the media to realise they get alot wrong, that's their problem if they're thick
I wish Sewer wasn't played so much by them live', my problem
What makes you believe they're underrated? Did you travel the globe taking a survey from every citizen of the world? Please explain.
Unfreakinbeliavable how good and amazingly beasty they were these 4 men …never got any better than that !
There's no doubt about that. They WERE amazing at the time. I couldn't wait to see them play again each time I went in the earlier days.
79 and at their best inmo❤
Jet Black is an underrated drummer. He does exactly what he's supposed o do.
The Charlie Watts school of keeping it simple.
@@princeofcupspoc9073 he's more of a british John Densmore to me
Jet Black was a professional Jazz drummer in his younger years. 40+ years old (or mid late 30's) he played this type of rock music when The Stranglers started out playing in the pubs. I saw The Stranglers around the mid 80's in my hometown of Santa Barbara, CA. at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. They opened up for Roxy Music, which I thought that was a bit odd. But still, both bands were phenomenal!!
What, drum?
Jet "Ronseal" Black!
best feckin Keyboard player of ANY era!!!!!!
There is nothing cooler than this
This cannot be beaten
this is the stranglers at their peak' brilliant
This has to be the best version of this song they have played over the years, love it.
I can't hear the keyboards properly towards the end. For that reason, the "Off the Record" version is better in my view. It's close to perfect.
my favorite line (makes me laugh out loud every time) : "they'll be called the Survivors. you wanna know why? ... cuz they're gonna SURVIVE...!" ♡♡♡🥰
@@chelebeaqueen❤
so good to see & hear this.... what a great band they were eh? wonderful & magical memories ❤
BRILLIANT FOOTAGE
5:32 The Rats Rally, I have never heard 4 musicians play like this, so tight, awesome music
I recall Classical music magazine calling the rats rally the most exciting coda of any rock music ever recorded. They were right.
No shit! I've loved these guys since 1980.
No one can play like this
my father handed me down his 1979 stranglers tour t-shirt... well, ok.... i nicked it. Pride of my chest when i wear it. My dad was a lucky guy seeing all these groundbreaking late 70s bands live. it will break my heart if that shirt ever gets damaged.
frame it! or better yet : BRONZE IT. ♡
LEGENDS......
I saw them on this tour, easily one of the greatest live bands Rip Jet and Dave
the best track from the best band---simple
I used to see them every Tuesday at the Nashville rooms in Kensington in the summer of '76, for free! They were great and such fun..... The highlights were this song, Walk On By and Go Buddy Go. Great memories! Jet Black was only 40 at the time, seemed ancient to us!
+David Jerome ..i saw them in '78, alas not for free, but i don't think i've ever spent a better two quid,
a great night and went on to see them another 17 times in the original lineup.
two quid, them were the days
You lucky old fucker
@davidjerome.. lucky sod
Punk goes prog. Loved it at 13, love it even more now
Fancied hearing Sewer. This, new to me is great. 👍
What words can describe this perfect symbiosis of four human beings making a sound that will surpass all time.
This performance is like a 3 barr heater... you just feel the energy radiate off it...
Spot on my mate
These guys surpassed punk... Listen to this tune! Those keyboards, the repetitive trance jam. They were intimidating and slightly threatening. As much as I like the Pistols, they were cartoonish compared to the Stranglers
earinsound couldn't agree more.
Once Vicious joined cartoonish was all they could be , they were great with Matlock , his bass lines would have made Bollocks even more of a classic . Not saying he was anywhere near JJ though .
@@HaleBopp The Jam, The Damned The Clash..... actually, that could be a good lyric for a reggae song !
Possibly the greatest video on TH-cam
Possibly--> Probably
Just magic never tire of revisiting this, so tight
I was there in CASCAIS, Portugal, in 1979. (Hall of Dramatico) my very first travel by train alone, I was 19... IOn my way back to Lisbon tocome back to Coimbra (100 km) kids strated throwing stones at the train... I got a stone on my forehead.. blood... got some stiches, walked to Lisbom from 4am to 9am. What an experience...Still have the scar at the age of 52 now! THANK YOU!
The MIB. Class is timeless...
RIP Dave Greenfield. A sad day. Another Covid19 casualty.
@Broad Sword Fair enough. Let's say Covid19 related then. His existing heart problems took him into that danger zone.
@Broad Sword This comment did not age well...
Brillant saw them for the 1st time on the Raven tour and 50 + times since
My first ever live gig was The Stranglers at Lancaster University on this tour; I was 14. Next 2 gigs were The Clash and The Ramones at the same venue. Life changing stuff when you;re that age!
You my friend would be a good judge of whether Stranglers helped define punk in those years! Like so many shitearses try to deny. :)
They were the best band on the planet at that time
My 2nd gig was Lancaster University on MIB tour, SLF was my 1st, Carlisle
I remember seeing them in the late seventies amazing times and the nineties were just as good for the xtc and despair of our motorcycle emptiness
If whoever just recommended this in the comments of a JJ interview reads this... Thank You . Brilliant . I was in a band in 80/81 that pretended we weren't trying to copy them but we were a bit shit . Such a cool Bass player (JJ , not ours)
pound for pound this is a good a live performance by themeninblack that you will find.. i've followed them since '77 and had so many great moments and orgasms watching and listening to them.. the best band that will ever grace a stage..
Muuch love for J.J
The Rats whiskers !!...Much appreciated...Thanks...
My all time top song.
This the year I first saw the Stranglers live with my mate Martin at the Colston Hall Bristol.... It was fucking Epic !
Probably the best live footage of Down In The Sewer on TH-cam. "I'll see you in the sewer, darling, don't be late!"
The Beautiful Dave Greenfield. You and Hugh were the Stranglers. Forever in our hearts, X
Please don't forget Jet Black.
@@julosx which just leaves jj ironically the only original member left
The best times of my life so far was had at the front of a Stranglers gig. And for me, JJ Burnell and Jet Black are the best rhythm section I ever heard.
Thanks for posting a great reminder.
Hugh Cornwell had a special something channeling through him with this collection of souls, for sure. i had hoped his solo stuff would have a glimmer of this magic...upon 2nd and 3rd listen-thru of his Nosferatu album, i found it IS there, just a wee bit cloaked. and though the discog of his solo work may be, in its own right, good and solid, it ain't anywhere near his personality/presence in The Stranglers.
tip-top male attractiveness. ooooozing. why? (probably because he's gonna surviiiiiive...!) 😉🥰
@@chelebeaqueenHugh should have taken Dave with him, both were progressive
I love Jet Black! Just brilliant.
Beautiful! the best! I was in Hamburg saw them live! Magnificent!
Absolute masterpiece in R’n’R history.
A great video, of the one of the greatest ever bands
Stunning keys
this footage could´ve been released as an official album, the camerawork is superb.
brittish surf music, like their waves cold, dirty and dark, and stanky.
That was fantastic , 1979 was the time l first saw the Stranglers live in Bristol in the UK , l had just turned 16
A fantastic clip' the band in their prime. Love it.
RIP Dave Greenfield- helped make The Stranglers special sound.
jet black... must be mentioned here, all four, just brilliant. great upload ,thanks.
he nods to each other- this is geniusT
F***.....I only was 15.....I wish I was there with just 5 years more on me !! It would had been the greater live concert ever !
Three words...PURE, RAW, TALENTED, GENIUS...sorry that was four...
THE BEST....SIMPLE.........
Briliant
4 quarters to perfection 🔥🔥🔥🔥
An absolute gem. Got to be one of the best live MIB videos on youtube.
Jarvis Cocker is a big Stranglers fan apparently. I remember he once played this on his sunday afternoon show on BBC6. Apparently Mr Greenfield is known in his house as 'The Arpeggiator'. I wish there was a Desert Island Discs show for the common man, the nobody like me'self. This would be the one I ran back into the sea to save, couldn't live without it.
haha safe
Yeah, had to watch the video again...hard to believe it still gives me the chills 30 years after they recorded it...4 guys with out MacTools and all the other overdub shit that exists today....still my favorite band of all time and I find myself thinking of their songs DAILY! Walk good...
the dynamics between instruments is VERY audible and superbly intricate! happy that came across in the live recording. right left right left right left right left right left right left CENTER. ♡
That was proper. Thank you for the posting. I had the times of my life losing my shit at the front of many Stranglers gigs at the back end of the 70's. That clip has left me feeling a bit nostalgic, but with a big smile on my face at the happy memories. Gotta love TH-cam.
Remember every bit from TV : Jet between glass plates, Hugh's ripped jacket, JJ going into the front rows..and of course a killer song brilliantly performed! Great memories, now in my favourites.
Monstrueuse prestation, jamais entendu une basse s'accorder aussi bien aux claviers, génialissime ! Merci pour ce partage.
c'est la folie, oui ❤🥰
Awesome!
What a awesome band with jet black holding the glue together on drums brilliant...wow
Love it when JJ whacks the strings 😂👍😎
OMG, this is one of the best things I've ever heard and seen!!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Man I love this upload. Been a bit of a Dave Greenfield late afternoon stretching into the evening here. The cover is off the Hammond in many households tonight.
Masterclass great mucisitions all of them noithing compairs in today's world
THE STRANGLERS AT THEIR VERY BEST !!!
(a french fan since 1980...)
fantastic version!!!
just listen (3'30-3'50) of the track,
now we know where the Belew's style in 'discipline' grows up from ;))
bravo, Stranglers!
mr.Cornwell - greatest respect!!!
Finally some REAL STRANGLERS! and not the shit that is getting pumped out from 1999 and later! The real line up! Thanks.
Soon as the brass sectin appeared it was all down from there. I mean, a fucklng BRASS section on a Stranglers record? Aaahh.
Haa! I"d say that was a very short appearance Shut up"s only about a Minute Long..Think it was the B-side to Nice & Sleazy?
I Loved the bass section when they played Nice n Sleazy live at Battersea in 1978!
Great tune great band enough said!
Jet "FUCKIN' MASTER " Black , he is so simple playing but precise and has lot of technique , a must-listen drummer.
this how I will always remember
Raw and brilliant.
Best band ever.rip.dave.best keyboard player ever.
This track is just awesome.such a shame hugh left.i remember this at a live gig.it was the first track.hugh had a rain mac on.i hate this era now.
The only band I recommend :)
( yep, 11 years since my 1st comment here )
Thriving footage of The Stranglers is so great to see. No matter how limited their major commercial visibility ~ when it was this well oiled they must have felt a great sense of power. In their own league for certain. Best!
...cuz the money's no good... just get a grip on yourself. ❤😉🙃
I love me some Jet Black. Stranglers -- sexiest beasts on the planet.
Roundhouse, Hope and Anchor... soundtrack to an era.
GENIUSES AT WORK!
Ace, rest in peace maestro xx
Absolutely monumental!
The Stranglers rockin' down the house.Oh yes!!!!
fantastic. punk floyd. I'll be seeing them again in november 11, manchester 39th time.

God bless-note pure
Yay!
awesome !...fantastic !...men in black are the best !...
total class
fantastic
Brilliant.
J'ai l'intégrale du concert sur cassette audio (enregistré sur RTL). J'ignorais qu'il en existait une vidéo. Wow!
just amazing
Awesome ...
Superbe version ❤
Dave Greenfield-best keyboard player of the whole Punk/New Wave era!
he really is!!! do you know of Victoria Island (BC)'s Nomeansno??? The Stranglers - particularly the relationship between the bass and the vocals -- were a heavy influence on them. i have found recently a few songs of both that are near reflections of each other!
where one band leaves short, the other takes it into hyperspace...
i love the little hat-tip to The Doors' Ray Manzerek --> did you know via Slash Records he produced the first two full-length albums of LA's X??? he even plays keyboards on a few tracks. the crossover ripples out HARD. ♡
Now that was Quite a fucking thing :)
