ICE is more efficient on the highway, as engines don’t like to be run at low power and temp and power is lost when braking.
An EV recoups on braking, and is thus only really affected by rolling resistance and windresistance.
And doubling speed quadruples wind resistance, so 70mph is a lot less efficient then 35mph.
And in an ice your most efficient speed will likely be 40-55mph.

@@ambertudor No one should be charging to 100% and should be doing shorter charge stops to add a little here and there, which is perfect for bathroom breaks. This is because until battery technology changes, charging to 100% frequently isn't good for the battery health. We need to let go of the ICE fuel mentality of filling up the tank, with EV's it's a different mentality. Charge to 100% only if where you are going has limited charging stations.

True, starts to be about right. Though in winter the range will halve.

2022 Air GT owner, I consistantly get a charge range of 470 miles and normally charge at 450 miles with my 21" wheels. The car normally reports that I when I plug in, I still have between 25 and 30 miles of range still left in the pack. Charge range is totally different than drive range, plus no one should ever drive to zero SOC, nor should anyone drive their ICE to empty. Lucid will gladly give you that actual performace numbers you need to get that coveted 516 miles of range, but you will never get those numbers on the open public road system. You need the perfect closed track with the perfect set of driving conditions. I do know that 65mph is prime speed to use on the test, no climate control, but I cannot remember the other conditions. I'm perfectly happy with the range I get with mine. Overall a good video and intesting stats at the end with comparisons.

The car loves 80 degrees, my 2022 Air GT did 4.4 mi/kwh at 70mph over 120 mile test I did when it was a steady 80 degrees out. I also noticed when doing loops, the on ramp acceleration needed to get this heavy high powered vehicle up to highway speeds harms efficiency.

Tom, thanks for a wonderful range test. I wouldn’t want to do it. None of this is surprising because I owned a 2023 Lucid GT rated for over 500 mi range, paying $155K. It was a beast on range. But, software bugs made me return it. These bugs may be fixed now.
We opted instead for solid software in EQS 580, costing much less than Lucid, but less range. Besides the Hyperscreen, the best feature of EQ series is 10 degree rear wheel steering. Radius is close to a model 3 and this is a very long vehicle. When not driving the EQ, our other family EV is a 2022 Model S with fabulous range. Frankly, since over 59, my bladder has far less range than my EVs. Got a fix for it?

I feel Lucid has the better technology, just wish they could get their prices more affordable, get their stock price up and get more service centers. But really wish they'd use smaller wheels, they are so much better for range and have more beef on the sidewalls for pothole protection. I really hate rubber band tires. Larger wheel are not worth the range hit. And if you can handle a stiffer ride, put more air in the tires as that will increase the range also. And if only Lucid would do a chrome delete on their vehicles, the chrome look is the past.

EVs today would have a better adoption coming from an ICE vehicle if the manufacturers just made a more compelling EV for consumers to buy into. 300 miles of estimated range for consumers to buy an EV still falls short of the measure whereas the Lucid took the time an engineering to produce a worthy EV for consumers coming from an ICE vehicle. Very excited to see Lucid with their upcoming SUV. Consumers will spend the money on this SUV since it outperforms EV SUV (better range) from other manufacturers. This will be one of the few EV SUVs that a consumer can buy vs leasing because it outperforms its ICE counterparts.

Great testing as always! Edmunds tested the 2022 model also at 465 mi. That's certainly nowhere near 5 mi/kWh. Range is great with that massiv pack and good efficiency, but Lucids technology claims in terms of 'years ahead of competition' are a bit overblown. Mercedes is currently using motors by Bosch or Conti(?) for their EQS models. Maybe we'll see improvements with the upcoming facelift. The next gen eATS 2.0 e-axle is said to go into production by the end of the year. Btw Edmunds is including charging into their consumption data and there the Lucid was tested at 28.4 kWh/100 mi vs 29.5 kWh/100 mi for the EQS 450+.... there must be quite some charging losses with the Lucid.

Great video with lots of useful information. Thanks! I wonder however, how much does the range on this Lucid Air GT go down if you drive a consistent 80-82 mph. Where I live here in Utah that's the speed limit on the interstate - 80 mph. I make frequent trips from UT to MT on I-15 and I drive 80-85 mph. I don't want to drive 70 mph the whole way. I've had a Model Y long range for 3 years, and while I like it very much as a daily driver around home, it's not great at road trips if I drive the speed limit on the interstate. Range collapses down to 200 miles or less if I drive 80mph, and it really does poorly if there's a headwind or colder temps. I was in the market for an EV truck over the last 6 months and actually chose to buy an and F-150 hybrid (Powerboost) because of the range issues described above. I'd really like to own an EV car or truck that can make a 550 mile roadtrip at 80 mph without adding hours to the trip for charging?

I drove about 800 miles last week with my wife’s Acura MDX. We decided to drive the gas car so we wouldn’t have so many stops. Only needed to stop for gas 2 times - typically with the Tesla it’s 4 charging stops, but wife needed bathroom break 4 times, 1 food stop.
So ended up taking roughly the same time as driving my tesla. 😂😂😂
But yes if you’re just driving solo, relatively health with a strong bladder - gas car will be faster. Except in most cases when going on roadtrips, you’ll have the wife and kids who will need periodic breaks. 😂

So the question that remains for me is… which of those top 3 mentioned (Lucid, EQS, or Model S) has the best charging curve? My road trips are 1,400 miles. SWFL to middle of CT.
I road-tripped my Model Y and spent about 5 additional hours charging during the 1,400-mile trip.
It was probably “safer” because I did catch a few naps during the 20-30-minute charging stops.
If the Lucid goes 400 miles but take an hour (or more) to charge, its not worth spending triple the amount of the cost of my Model Y.

    • @ATE2AQTR
      @ATE2AQTR 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

model Y needs 350 mile 70mph its more like 240-250 miles and we have a 260 mile round trip, sucks not being able to make the whole trip , we also have a 700 round trip that takes 2-3 stops which is sorta sucks. For us 350 mile 70 mph highwa seems like the sweet spot for long range travel and if we could charge 10-80 in 15 minutes or less we would never own another ICE vehicle. The Silverado EV is very tempting but seems just a little to pricey, drop them 10k and they would sell 10x+ more

How far did you get once you hit 10% SOC? this is a stat that should be given on these range tests as it tells the consumer what realistically they will get on highway mileage before they really should start looking for a charger. This will help with planning a road trip with these much longer range vehicles. Doing the math it looks like you were probably somewhere around 420 miles at 10% SOC.

@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Oh sorry I can see I phrased that wrong but actually that information is good to know as well. I was more thinking total range from 100% to 10% because this lets people know if they can make the trip without having to stop for a charge. I know with this amount of range people will need to stop anyway to use the restroom or just take a break but this allows people to not need or have to look or care about finding or dealing with a charger especially if they book a hotel with charging. Just drive to hotel and get charged and then drive home or on to the next hotel.

I'm guessing that, if the car had been driven in the daytime, the rang would have been greater - headlights use a lot of juice, plus the A/C was on. (I would also have had music playing. The wonderful near-total silence of this car, he sounded like he was in a studio, makes it perfect for listening to music while driving.)
Still, nothing wrong with 460 miles.

Credit where credit's due, the car is clearly efficient and has a tremendous range. However, making the best isn't that difficult when that's your goal and you aren't focused on delivering that at an affordable price. This is the problem Lucid faces. They aren't focusing on simplifying the design for manufacturing from the inception. You can't reduce costs anywhere near as effectively after it's achieved its performance goals, especially when the numbers you make are tiny.
So well done Lucid, it's just a pity that you're unlikely to survive with this strategy.

That's not how the odometers work. They aren't directly calibrated to the speedometer. Many OEMs purposely set the speedometers to read a little fast because they get fined if they read slow. Ahh, you're one of those ridiculous Lucid battery size conspiracy guys, now I understand. Sigh.
