This is the Shane Lee aka Spare Change origin story. Honestly was super interested in hearing about all the details. Really loved hearing his passion for this journey and for all the gear he has auditioned.
Awesome review. Having a gain matched amp/ processor that’s able to produce no hiss is definitely a deciding factor for a lot of people considering this amp if they have a Trinnov processor. I wished you went over the bi-amp feature, and how warm the amp got. Since it’s a class D amp it was probably only slightly warm to the touch anyway. It sounds like you will be switching out the Macs.

@@therealshanelee If we pair the Amplitude with Marantz 8805 processor, will it still reduce the hiss? Also, are there any benefits between Amplitude’s 16 channel amp vs two 8m’s?

Shane you just described the common class D signature of an N Core amp in the Trinnov Amp. The problem with this expensive amp is that except for the gain matching with the processor, you can obtain similar sonic and dynamic results from more affordable class D multichannel amps. Thanks for the thorough review, and specially including the two channel performance.
Really enjoyed your timeline of how you progressed through different equipment. I've heard the trinnov processor and amp combo that demoed A Quiet Place and agree the noise floor is ridiculously low and makes that film magical. I haven't heard anything better and if I'm on your same progression path only 4 years until I'll have one myself 😃
Interesting video. I switched to Class D Hypex NCore amps about a year ago. My goal was to have identical amplification for all 13 channels, and I already had a Monolith 7 channel amp. So, I just figured I'd grab a second Monolith at some point. When I was ready to buy I started poking around just to see if there was anything else I was interested in checking out and I found myself very intrigued by these multichannel Class D amps. So I ordered one up and figured I'd go with whichever I amp I preferred, the Monolith or Hypex. I really loved the Hypex amps. Ton of power, light weight (at least compared to to the Monolith), and super quiet. I also felt like it was really neutral sound that, for me, closer replicated the sound at a movie theater. I really don't see myself going back to a solid state amp for home theater use.
Great video, very well put together! Loved the storytelling and context background you included in here as well. And covering both HT and 2-ch listening is great too. Thanks for making this video Shane!
Great video. Better, smarter and shared a journey I believe a lot of us can relate to. A quiet place is a great movie to demo your HT sound system. Those subtle sounds, like the insects, the sound of the river at the beginning part, really can tell you the difference, well, if you can hear it ;)
Love the romantic music playing while Shane discusses his Atmos experience with the Pixar movie "Brave". I thought we might finally see him cry. Nope. 😅😭🤣
Another interesting, informative review. Trinnov products being way above my comfort level in MSRP,(as were Zappiti, then later Anthem,) but still like to read and hear about Trinnov products, even since partnering with Zappiti. When you mentioned the 8M being powered by NC modules my interest was piqued. I then noticed online the back of the 8M has made in the USA by Amplifier Technologies. I use an ATI 523 and 524 in my system, for LCR, and bed layer surround duty. No hiss from those two either, but they don't have D825 connection jacks, but then my Anthem MRX 1140 doesn't either. They were pricey at 5200 for both, but way less than the 8M. Also using an Outlaw 5000X for 4 overhead channels, and a Crown XLi 2500 for the 2 subs, no hiss from those 2 amps either.
Same here. Doubt I will ever manage to convince myself that it's a sound investment. Yet, I find this brand quite inspiring and love the thinking behind their product philosophy.
I have MRX1140 and Monolith 7x on sensetive Persona speakers. I’m HT focused and will look for better LCR and then 8ch will likely need to be class D for in the space. 8ch I have are all inCeiling so I don’t need more that 1140 driving them. Did you notice difference in H1&2 with 4ch amp over what 1140 pumps out from its 60w class D section?
Hay Shane good review you are right about the background silence of the class D amplifier, but for the wrong reason the silence has nothing to do with gain matching it has more do with the power supply design used in in the amps all amps have noise linear power supplies tend to produce audible noise because the low frequency of the transformers whereas class D amplifiers use high speed switch mode power supplies, which have ultrasonic noise, which is inaudible to human hearing so they have the appearance of having a black noise floor. The audible hiss has more to do with the speaker impedance than the amplifier itself dose
Not all class D amps use switching psu, my ATI Amps use toroidal linear ones as I suspect this ATI built Trinnov probably does, in fact most likely two.
Great Review. Haven’t heard the unit. Would be fun to know how it would stack up against something like NAD M28 that uses purify Eigentakt. Although I guess with a Trinnov processor the most natural choice would be the Trinnov amp either way, love that serial connection👌🏻

I have never seen "A Quiet Place". (Only one in the family who enjoys horror.) But I did bring myself to buy the McIntosh MC257 (7 channels) because of your videos. I don't own a Trinnov and never may, but I appreciate you for sharing your perspective. I'm not a Class D hater, but I suppose I'm a bit shallow for wanting something expensive to look the part; and the Amplitude looks too much like a plain, black box. Maybe if I ever own a home with a hidden equipment rack I'll check back to this and consider switching. Thank you again for sharing, Shane.
In summary, neutral isn't always the best. The best is based on what you prefer. What's better than the Amplitude? Well, technically Purifi has been verified to measure and sound a little cleaner. So possibly an Amplitude V2 down the road. NAD, who optimized Hypex Ncore about 5+ years ago, has gone on to implement Purifi, with great results. In this context, Trinnov is slightly behind the curve already.
Hi Shane, The main reason you don't hear the hiss anymore is the gain match between the Altitude and amp. Your other amps probably have a gain around 29V, the Amplitude 19V. I had the same with my Classe CA5200's and CA2200 amps. Putting -10dB attenuators in between has the same effect and makes you use the optimum preamp range of the Altitude.
@@therealshanelee Oh, and I would't switch out the Mc's too soon. Until now class D hasn't convinced me when you have to listen to them for a longer time, especially with a lot of speakers. It's too stressful for my ears.
Except for the optional cleaner input interface, is there really that much of a difference between these rebadged Trinnov D-Class amps and ATI's in-house D-Class amps to justify the cost difference? Both are made by ATI. Is it possible you really are just paying for the Trinnov name in this instance?
Shane had some Spare Change for new amps. Why would you get the altitude 32 if you only use 11 channels? Isn't it exactly the same processor? Congratulations!
I tested this theory with my marantz and emotiva and it was dead silent. Had my ears next to the speakers it was completely dead silent. No hissing nothing.
great review, btw just to say the gain matching/staging can be done with any amplifier which has gain control, so for example you can get to reference SPL maybe with amp gain 60% and preamp 0.0db level adjustment instead of 100% amp gain and -5.0db preamp for a given channel. In this way you lower the noise floor ratio.
Very interesting on the hiss you hear in the Mcintosh I have the exact same amp I use xlr cables hooked up to marantz 8805, dead silent also your using the trinovv link cable instead of Xlrs that could take away a problem hiss in your system. Great review. Still love my Mac just ordered a MC462 when it comes in it will run my fronts and then use the mc257 for surround duty

I have a dream that Trinnov will one day update their amps with the new higher amperage Purifi board. However that said I’m thinking about selling my Classé CA5300 for an Amplitude 8.
First of all let me say I’ve always really enjoyed your videos. I’m an AV Integrator in Fort Lauderdale and I have to say I’m a huge fan of audio control for dedicated home theaters that I do, is there a particular reason that I don’t ever see anybody reviewing their equipment? I think it sounds just as good if not better in the Trenov?
I run all channels on ncore nc252 - dead quiet. Front on Purifi - dead quiet and excellent dynamics while they keep their cool 😎. All in all for a third of a price of trinnov amp but if you have trinnov pre pro and money considering clean look with db25 connector it’s no brainer.
i seen class d amplifier still current model been out few years , priced often £3.5 grand for 8 ch , and said no way . looked bit and found it for £455 . okay that seems reasonable . not saying model as i am watching it may get it ? for powering JBL five screen wide HF compression horns as current ones being used i find i notice faint cross-talk . so got try pink noise in one channel to see if it cross-talks to the other channels as it should be isolated , as for noise floor or s/n ratio . the higher the number the better the noise floor s/n ratio . the lower the number the more noise will be heard . got power the amp with no connections other than connected to speakers to see how quiet it is . testing with ear fine testing with test gear REW with basic RTA FFT with amp each outputs connected to the pc computer , special connection . i use a cinema professional , lucasfilm ltd THX sound system , that i can check if the amp is silent , check if it produces any harmonic frequencies when using sine wave tone , to see if i can see any harmonic frequencies ahead of the fundamental sine wave . plus other sort of noise . i would say the trinnov amp has some noise . yet you have no test gear ? can listen and if turning levels up all up the way , there will be some faint like noise . but that's with levels all turned up ! and never play the sine wave or music or movie that way, you'll knacker the amp and speakers . i wonder if that trinnov amp has been ASR tested ?
I was wondering about this unit, I can get a used one. I was considering a MAC but I keep hearing that even an Emotiva matches up with a McIntosh so I'll likely steer towards this Trinnov to go with my Anthem AVM90
I have the trinnov 16 and both the McIntosh Mc255 and Mc257 amps. A great friend of mine has the trinnov 16 and trinnov 8m amp. So we been waiting for your opinion on both. In my setup I have all mogomi XLR cables and twisted 14 gauge speaker cables going to all my speakers except the atmos , two twisted 14 gauge blacks and two twisted 14 gauge red (11 gauge). Everything is very quiet. Especially compared to my last amps. I do a lot tweaking to learn what all the trinnov 16 can do. Only speakers I hear a slight hiss from, and I mean ear on speaker slight hiss, is my side surrounds but I made some adjustments to the gain of those speakers because there further from my listing position. Other then that the McIntosh are very very quiet in my setup.
The McIntosh are quiet for sure but I do get a faint hiss with my ear to the tweeter. I’ve heard it louder with other amps but nothing as quiet as the 8M.
An additional factor is the speaker sensitivity and efficiency, which can worsen or enhance hiss. Ibms speakers may be less sensitive, so less hiss or even fully quiet. This is the rating that says 100 dB @ 1 watt @ 1 meter) for example. So in some systems with some speakers a Trinnov could be completely quiet with McIntosh amps.
Time to wake up and realize that Class D is the future... especially with these insane electricity prices we currently have.. ;). I rock nCore and Purifi amps and they are so insanly quiet and super cool.
Solid review. Assuming a given amp has minimal hiss, is there any point in spending more than ~$1k on an amp (e.g. 5-7 channels) with sufficient power? With DSP, any tonality is essentially negligible. As an owner of an OSD 5 channel amp having ~120 watts/channel, which I got refurbed for $500, I see 0 point in investing more at this performance point.

Interesting story. I have a Alt 16 and the same McIntosh amps and honestly, I don’t hear a damn sound - silent. So might be something else at play beyond gain matching, not sure - or maybe with an 8 year old and living in a city you can never get to absolute silence I couldn’t tell the diff anyways, but mine has no audible sound and I was listening for it after this review so who knows
I am running a 7 channel D-Sonic amp in my setup. Very transparent tone with no perceived noise whatsoever. I would recommend it to anyone. It's the finest component in my rig 🍺
Weird, as someone with a Yamaha avr that has never caused hiss it is a bit weird that no hiss at this price point is considered a selling point, but ok 😅
What's wrong with 16 channels versus 32 channels? Processors with so many channels has to have a negative impact on the sound. I am interested in the anthem 90 because of the sound quality but I am very concerned that the 16 channel processor is a lot more than I need. And I think would it sound better if it was for eight channels which is more than anyone really needs or at least most people.

got power the amp with no connections other than connected to speakers to see how quiet it is . testing with ear fine testing with test gear REW with basic RTA FFT with amp each outputs connected to the pc computer , special connection . i use a cinema professional , lucasfilm ltd THX sound system , that i can check if the amp is silent , check if it produces any harmonic frequencies when using sine wave tone , to see if i can see any harmonic frequencies ahead of the fundamental sine wave . plus other sort of noise . i would say the trinnov amp has some noise . yet you have no test gear ? can listen and if turning levels up all up the way , there will be some faint like noise . but that's with levels all turned up ! and never play the sine wave or music or movie that way, you'll knacker the amp and speakers .
i wonder if that trinnov amp has been ASR tested ?
Class D vs A/B, it doesnt mean as much as it used to be. Trinnov...now that is just endgame :)
I was wondering about this unit, I can get a used one. I was considering a MAC but I keep hearing that even an Emotiva matches up with a McIntosh so I'll likely steer towards this Trinnov to go with my Anthem AVM90
Proper 7.1 system can make sound come out from celling. Movie such as master and commander is an example.. Even stereo can do that with certain song.
At times yes if you are in the center seat. It won’t work for a group of people. You will need the extra channels.
Do you listen to music on those amps?
Hey Shane have you looked into Arcam class G amps? JBL uses them as their synthesis amplifiers
I've seen them. I think they're hideous looking. I'm sure they sound good though.
@@therealshanelee yeah I'm not in love with their look either 😂. Just thought I'd suggest them for review.
Great job bro but you don’t talk about your subwoofer 🔊??😎👍
The amp doesn’t power the subwoofers so no need to bring them up.
@@therealshanelee I know I was just curious.lol 😁👍
Keep up the great job 👏
You just sold me on Hegel 😂
Time to wake up and realize that Class D is the future... especially with these insane electricity prices we currently have.. ;). I rock nCore and Purifi amps and they are so insanly quiet and super cool.
Why did you end up keeping the mackintosh?
I’ve had the McIntosh for about 2yrs now.
@@therealshanelee Based on the video, it felt like you are going to switch over to Amplitude.
@Shane are we done with the class d experiment; eating healthy and driving a Prius?
Not quite yet. Stay tuned.
I'd say if your happy don't go trying something else. You might end up spending 😁
Will watch soon. Did you compare vs your McIntosh amps?
About Time !!!!!!! Lol. !
😅😭🤣 I know right!!?!?
@@keepingupwiththejones2933 Shane changes his name thinking we forgot about promised amp shootout (Trinnov vs Mac) under Spare Change! Nice try! He created the must see TV!!
It only took 7 months c'mon 😁
@@therealshanelee you need to run for Congress!
8M made by ATI and Bang Olfsen for Amplitude 16. Maybe you can do a comparison in say another 7 months?!
Monoprice sells the same thing.
@@chebrubin yes same ATI chassis. But not same with specs for the end vendor. Not saying one better than the other, that’s up to everyone’s ears. Car companies sharing same platforms but distinct differences with each brand.
I have personally heard monoprice, ATI NC 528, Trinnov. In my opinion not the same results for my system.
As long as you love what you have, then that is all that matters.
@@donaldfleming331 Absolutely agree.
I just don't see this marriage with Shane lasting long. I see going back to or stepping up to Parasound JC5 or JC1 amplifiers in his rack closest.
It's a faint hiss.
Lol guess all that money 💰 you save with giving up XLR(s) for the DB25 parallel cable helped.
No clue, but would love to see a comparison to the D-Sonic Class D amps.
I am running a 7 channel D-Sonic amp in my setup. Very transparent tone with no perceived noise whatsoever. I would recommend it to anyone. It's the finest component in my rig 🍺
They don't answer emails.
@@therealshanelee That's a shame. Thanks for the reply
Gene said the Storm is End Game because of the Bass management
This is better. He knows it.
Gene recently heard the Trinnov at audio advice live. He said he hated to admit it because of Shane but the Trinnov was a better product
@@donhensley403 facts lol I remember
Weird, as someone with a Yamaha avr that has never caused hiss it is a bit weird that no hiss at this price point is considered a selling point, but ok 😅
What's wrong with 16 channels versus 32 channels? Processors with so many channels has to have a negative impact on the sound. I am interested in the anthem 90 because of the sound quality but I am very concerned that the 16 channel processor is a lot more than I need. And I think would it sound better if it was for eight channels which is more than anyone really needs or at least most people.

Ahh you are 30 min from trinnov headquarters, now I understand a lot more about your reviews. Sorry but that definitely means something I've realized in reviews
Am I sensing some sort of conspiracy theory? If so I’d like to hear it.
@@therealshanelee not really a conspiracy theory just something I've noticed with hi fi reviewers or probably any reviewers for that matter. There is a greater percentage that the reviewer lives in the same country or same area as product being reviewed. Not conspiracy just unnoticed natural small bias
@@therealshanelee I wonder if u will be doing any krix reviews soon
@@bingdong8571 I also work with a couple retailers that sell 90% of the items I review as well.
@@bingdong8571 I've been in talks with krix but they don't have distribution in the US. They didn't think it'd be financially positive by shipping me several speakers.
So bought the expensive trinnov 16, (great choice) then upgraded it to the hugely more expensive trinnov 32, (same thing just more channels) because he did not want to be restricted to 16 channels, (fair enough) but he still 'only' has an 11 channel set up. errrr ok then. Sounds like a 'mine is bigger than yours' kind of guy. :)
I've got 14 speakers and 4 subs. Most folks know this unless you only casually watch my videos. So No, your theory is wrong.
2:27 Shane don't you only have 11 speakers in your room?
13 not counting subs.

Hi sir
so no actual tests with this £13.8k 8ch amp ? £13.8k . i see the specs but are those true specs or bs specs as test gear will show results . maybe buy some serious test gear . also you don't actually know what the frequency curve is like within the b-chain . you not tested checked any of that with REW RTA sweeps graph overlays . there better 8ch amps out there that are just as better than trinnov that do equally the real thing for far , far away less $ £ and are class d .
Heard of trinov and listened to it ,for the price crap
