My theory is: I think this is the light of cayde but not actually cayde himself. He died physically, but Paracausaly or spiritually, he's still "alive" inside the traveler.

Maybe the Traveler intercepts peoples consciousness upon death and uses ghosts to put that consciousness into a new body. The ghosts may possess some information about their guardians that’s required to write someone’s consciousness onto a new body. Without one, the guardian isn’t dead or alive.
I can see Crow apologizing and Cayde laughing it off and saying that he fulfilled the Dare and now has that fun job. I think Cayde would find it hilarious that his dare was actually fulfilled in a way.
Something interesting: In season of the haunted, it was revealed that Ikora's nightmare was Cayde, but unlike everybody else, we never resolved her nightmare like we did for Crow, Caiatl, and Zavala or like we did for Eris. And from the Trespasser lore tab, it seemed as though she backed down and walked away, don't know if she ever resolved it. Somebody mentioned the possibility of Cayde being a 'lightmare', if you would, as opposed to nightmares. Makes Ikora's sole presence in the cutscene more critical. Ikora's inability to deal with her guilt and grief previously may be the very reason Cayde and Cayde alone is there, as opposed to seeing every dead guardian or nightmare.
This makes so much sence but I hope they bring him back since lance died...and we would only have ikora like give zavala a good death cause tbh I don't want an other voice actor for zavala...and would love to have cayde back
I’m guessing something about Cayde is a critical piece of our timeline. Elsie got sent back to when he became the vanguard as the start of her time loops, now he defies death and is in a timeline very different from the others Elsie has lived through.
Okay, i believe in 2 things 1- this is the inside of the traveler, but I believe that it goes even deeper in this space or plane 2- cayde is dead, this is just a way of the traveler taling to us, using an avatar, or, this is cayde, but maybe a remnant of his light
Guardians have a second chance and the witness is looking for a specific guardian inside the Traveller The Witness is looking for the primordial guardian aka itself but its other self or probably the embodiement of the traveller.
I think it's the other way around. The tone here starts off us hopeless, then the music takes a more somber yet heroic turn as Cayde is not only revealed but says the words "I'm here now." Indicating that things might not be as bleak as we think they are. Then the original Destiny theme swells up. It's hopeful
The light radiating from the Ace of Spades as well as Cayde himself reminds me of the reforged Travelers chosen when it's at Max stacks of light, this glow through the cracks.
If he is indeed back as a Lightbearing Guardian, it would make sense that he and Sundance are hesitant to have Sundance out in the open now. However, it might be something along the lines of Valhalla where ALL of the Traveler's Guardians live on in a "paradise" like place where they await the final battle between Light and Dark or the Gardener and the Winnower.
This theory is definitely the most plausible and what I also think is more likely. A name like “Final Shape” implies this is the end. This is it. This is where you end up. It might shed some light on what pure light looks like it at least what the proposed vision for pure light looks like. Final shape is very much a metaphor for a finale of some sorts. Perhaps the witness needs to destroy the inside of the traveler or corrupt it because it’s the only thing left that allows resurrection.
The look of the portal is really telling. Watch the way the energy flows. Outside of the Traveler, the psychedelic pattern is being sucked in. In this teaser cutscene, it's flowing outward.
All I'll say is this. Caiatl standing in a well of radiance made me smile wayy more than it should've. She's already a monster in battle, imagine her boosted. Just a really cool teaser trailer.
Made me think Does wells power apply to non light users I cant think of an example of this being used for non light.....unless.......does this mean the traveler is in a gifting mood again??

Lol Also in the video Byf made regarding Fellwinter and Shaxx, Lord Shaxx and Fellwinter had a talk about how Shaxx would protect his people from the incoming cold storm. Shaxx like the Chad he is said that he would protect them with his light, and not his exact quote, but he mentions his solar hammer ult as what he would use to keep them warm and safe. I think the powers work on anything honestly. We havnt really seen anything our powers won't work on except for the Lightfall artifact.

@Blakout Gaming it can, there was a lore tab for season of the haunted that mentioned a warlock, allied splicers and cabal were in the underbelly of the derelict leviathan, woke up a calus bot, when it began to attack. The warlock casted well and it described the light imbue the weapons of the splicers and cabal with light power
I'm entirely on board with the idea that it's destiny's version of Valhalla. Guardians die, and are manifested in light wherever that is, I assume inside the traveler. Just makes the most sense to me.
I have a feeling that cayde may be like the travelers version of a nightmare. Not actually cayde, but the memories and important parts of cayde before he died. The traveler brought back said Cayde traveler-nightmare to guide us on how to save itself.

I think to build softly off your idea I think it’s sort of like cayde’s spirit and memories are still around and maybe the traveler gave it temporary life to help us feel somewhat grounded in what I think is the past. Or if not that I think he’s “alive” bc where we are is a place beyond time sort of like limbo so he’s allowed to exist bc there is not concept of time or life and death in this world

Nathan Fillion is confirmed to be returning as of Final Shape. But I’ve heard so many different gaming news outlets title it all differently, it’s hard to know whether it just for FS or he’s back for the long haul which is what I’m hoping. But we’ll just have to wait and see.
Cayde hypothesis: The veil is described as the gateway to the memory of the universe, the veil is used to open the portal. So, at the other side of the portal, cayde is likely a manifestation of our memories of him.
Seeing Cayde and hearing Nathan Fillion as his voice was a dual shock. A lot of what I caught from the teaser Byf covered; the portal, no Sundance, Cayde seems to know Ikora, he has Ace somehow even though it's safely in our vaults. Also, as he said, there's SO MANY ways this could go. This ranks right up there with when we saw Hive Ghosts for the first time. Bungie pulling a Roddy Piper by changing the questions when we think we know the answers.

I think that we might be seeing the Traveler's last line of defense. I think Cayde and maybe other Guardians come back as defensive mechanisms of the traveler. I also think that most likely Cayde can't leave that place.
Think that was the Traveler’s plan. If all the guardians that have died were to come back inside the traveler then the traveler would have an army to defend itself against the witness if it got in!
For sure about Cayde not being able to leave- odds are he isn't sticking around. Maybe not even as a planetary vendor. They've been adamant about Cayde staying dead for a while and I believe they'd respect that and not keep him around.
It would be so awesome if the guardian who died in the Savathun’s Song strike made an appearance even if it was just her voice. Could be a really cool moment with Sloane as well. You could also do a “I don’t even know who you are?” joke with Savathun. I wonder if any of the villains we’ve killed are in the Traveler like Oryx.
It’s definitely light either emanating from Cayde or it’s a light based form of Cayde in the Traveller. If you look at Ace of Spades and compare it to the Travellers Chosen sidearm while it has a few stacks of its Gathering Light perk. Both guns emanate a similar light glow.
It's very funny to imagine that the opening mission of Final Shape features the Guardian just straight up, for-real, final-death dying, and the rest of the expansion involves clawing your way out of the afterlife back into the world of the living.

The lore states that our guardian is the strongest guardian to ever exist, so it makes sense that we are the best chance we have to defeat the witness, our allies just give us the tools and knowledge necessary to do so.

If both Cayde and Ikora are inside of the traveler, then I really wonder what the Witness has been doing at that time, considering the landscape looks pretty beautiful, guess time will have to tell. Either way I really hope that Bungie nails it with the story in TFS, especially after the negative reception that Lightfall got. From what I heard, the version of Lightfall we were originally gonna get has now become The Final Shape, and I really want this expansion to end our soon to be 10-year long journey to end on the best note possible.

I feel like Cayde is in the “afterlife” of the traveler; anyone who has the light has their memories of their lives there. And it can connect to those who are still light bearers, but only in the final moments
I can only assume that Cayde will not be leaving this “afterlife”/inside the traveller situation, so I’m hoping there is another social space, and I’m hoping it’s a true open world where we can just walk out of the social space and go out to the open world after collecting your bounties or quests whatever is there but we’ll see
Bit of a shot in the dark here: back on the Glykon, we communed with the darkness, but we also got bits of dialogue that seemed to be from the light. One of the voices that represented the light, or the traveler whatever, was Cayde. I think that there was more of a connection between the traveler and Cayde than we were aware. Cayde seemed to know quite a bit about the Deep Stone Crypt, even after the memory wipes involved with becoming an exo. So much so, that he suspected that Braytech would hunt him down (See: his caches) even with the very obvious fact that, at the time of his death, Europa’s exo facilities were probably running on autopilot. He placed particular emphasis on the “Long slow whisper”, believed to have been connected to the darkness. Cayde was also seemingly aware of the Exo’s connection to the Vex, having (rather irresponsibly) attempted to interface directly with a number of vex devices on Nessus during the red war. Cayde also almost never discussed the traveler in a spiritual way the same way Ikora and Zavala do. I think he found a way to purge his exo body of the darkness, through direct communion with the traveler. that’s possibly why he seems so confused in this trailer; the darkness is all about the immaterial, specifically consciousness. If he’s purely light, reaching an understanding of the traveler as an individual entity, not a deity, then of course he’s confused. Without any dark power at all, his mind is probably fractured-that tends to happen when you get shot in the head.
@@aceellis1660 ah, but that's not wholly true. Afterall, Ghaul became a fully Light entity at the end of the Red War before the traveler struck him down and he clearly remembered who he was. So there is president for this sort of thing. Also, the removal of memory only seemes to happen upon initially receiving the Light, as Guardians can remember things after the initial revival, even after further deaths. Really, that's the more compelling evidence here. Afterall, becoming a Guardian already means you are a Light based existence, and there's no evidence to suggest that becoming a fully Light entity after that point would wipe your mind a second time.
To add on to Cayde's extensive and almost scholarly knowledge of Exo, Vex, and Light, I think it would be interesting if his resurrection involves him reaching what I presume would be his ultimate calling (desperately trying to keep myself from just using the word destiny and it is harder than it looks), which is to surpass the Man with the Golden Gun as the greatest Gunslinger who ever lived.
Because of Cayde's "wherever the hell this is" line I believe that in response to something that the witness will do in future seasons before final shape, the traveler will directly revive cayde and hence why his weapon and eyes are radiating light so intensly.
I like to think this is the real physical body of Cayde being resurrected in some manner. If you look at his face, you can still see some of the physical damage and scars he sustained while fighting against the Scorn in Forsaken. They likely fixed him up a bit after retrieving his body to make him more presentable and give him back some of his dignity so to speak for his funeral like we do in the real world. That all leads me to believe this is the real Cayde.
I kinda hope they don’t bring him back, it feels like it will devalue everything we went thru in forsaken. Believe me if he was back I would be elated, but still

What if that's not the inside of the Traveler? At the end of Lightfall, when the Witness enters the portal, you can see that the portal is displaced from the surface of the Traveler. What if the triangle is a portal to the birthplace of the Light, and the Witness went there to destroy it from the root?

Hear me out on this but guardians and the ppl we killed never truly died. They died on this plain of existence but it’s destiny. Nobody truly dies. Unless this is the travelers last option and it is to resurrect all its best champions for one final attempt to help defeat the darkness
@Jack Mack not only did no one "hack" to find a cutscene but if you actually played lightfall, you would know that the witness doesn't just want to destroy the traveler and kill everything.

Little thing no one else mentioned, when they showed a fireteam in the well. They were facing vex, which I think brings it more back to that garden of creation where the vex came from
The other two shots (Savathun and Nezarec) are moments that have already happened, but us fighting a bunch of Vex alongside Misraaks and Caiatl hasn't yet. Splicer was close, but Caiatl wasn't there. Curious.
Pretty sure it is our Cayde since Ikora is feeling him in on everything that has happened since he died. My theory is that the energy irradiating from Cayde and Ace is indeed light he was brought back by The Traveler because he still has a role to play in the final battle (or war?) once it concludes he will pass away it feels like, also most likely they are indeed inside the traveler
I think Cayde is just a memory within the Traveler. Like data and memory still recorded within the Light, and now that we are inside the Traveler, we are seeing its memories of all its guardians that probably died and lost their ghost. Almost like the show The Expanse, with Agent Joe Miller and the protomolecule.
My personal theory is the fact that taking and ressing a guardian are two sides of the same coin. Both lose their former self, but through the light you keep your personality and quirks. The traveler takes the spark that ghosts find “takes” it through the light and sends it back as the guardian is raised from death, creating a fresh imprint that has memories built upon since being raised
Imagine the overwhelming heartwarming moment we’d witness: Eris crying tears of joy at the site of her fireteam, alive within the afterlife, her embracing them after so long. Though, I feel Toland wouldn’t be there, as his soul, the remnants of his Light, is still trapped in the Sea of Screams.
Possibly but how does he have the ace canonically at this point in the timeline we have the ace after putting the final bullet in Uldren Sov so how does he have the gun when he shouldn't have it
Im so excited to see Cayde back. I screamed when I saw the reveal. I feel like Cayde and other guardians who have lost their ghost and died are sent to a kind of paradise inside the traveler which the witness has tapped into. And we somehow make it into the traveler and bring Cayde back.
In a personal opinion I'd like to put forward the notion that Cayde's resurrection is a defense mechanism by the traveller, feeling the danger from the Witness inside of itself it brought back the remnants of Cayde (one of the greatest all round guardians) as a way for the "remnant" of Cayde to guide the other followers of the light, through his guidance we will be shown the full potential of the light and darkness leading to the banishment of the Witness from inside the Traveller. I say this because the past few years have basically only been about the darkness and the power it brings and in doing so the lightbearers have lost their way with the light subclasses we all know and love. It would also be kind of a twist to show that even with all the hard work we've put into mastering darkness, only through the use of light can we drive the Witness back (a little cliche but it would be a good fit for the ending)
A theory i had was maybe ikora dies, but seeing how her ghost is with her i dont think that’s a possibility, but i love the way ikora says “wish you couldve been there” in the exact same tone of voice as when she said “we shouldve been there” after he died is an amazing parallel
I feel like Cayde not having a physical ghost but being infused with that light could mean Sundance's scattered essence may have been able to be infused into him post final death. Maybe something about the fact that he's an exo facilitated this where a fleshy type guardian probably couldnt have this happen. Probably not the case, but we never get to meet many ghosts outside of Sagira and Glint. Having such an eccentric and bombastic guardian like Cayde, I've always wondered what her personality would be like.
Btw, for the marathon stuff, you should absolutely talk about the similarities and mirrorings that happened between the marathon stuff and the destiny "creation myth" (the game of flowers), they are very interesting
"The domain of the light, is the domain of the physical." The realm of the dark is that of memories and emotions. Pain. When you put them together, you can make memories physical. I'm speculating, but this would make sense why Cayde can come back. At least in the Traveler.
Apart from the excitement that came from seeing cayde again, I am honestly much more excited to see you finally cover Marathon's lore. As someone who is too young to have experienced it back in the day, learning the lore from third parties has made me appreciate it a lot. I especially love how it ties in to some of the current Bungie ips and lore. Very excited!

I think there are 2 possibilities that make the most sense to me. 1. Due to being an exo and created through the use of darkness, because of the darkness' connection to the mind it preserved him. 2. Since their inside the traveler which controls the physical, some mix of both dark and light took the memory of Cayde that Ikora held and manifested it into a physical form, merging the two sources of power.
this hits me in the heart ive been a hunter main since y1 d1 when i was in 8th grade then i preordered forsaken and had the poster of the hunter carrying cayde on my wall it that expansion was easily my favorite because i like im sure many others felt had that silly class loyalty and when our vanguard died oh man what a moment to see him back is both nostalgic and so exciting for the story implications
Somethings are for certain, this is our Cayde. Lack of ghost, Ikora telling him he missed so much it feels more than likely he’s our timelines. Also the light on him is definitely traveler light, and not taken corruption. I feel this is one of many things; a guardian afterlife inside the traveler. Cayde is actually a manifestation from the traveler, either made to guide us or help defeat the witness. Or perhaps this is a light version of a nightmare, and many more explanations. The second option has me hoping potentially more dead guardians maybe brought back in the same way to help us deafest the Witness and save the Traveler.
I’m assuming it a sort of guardian afterlife inside of the traveler, that’s why cayde is still ghostless and brimming with light energy.. I just wanna know how Ikora managed to make it in
I need our character reunited properly with Cayde, big mission, pull some badassery, then we arrive to a location meeting with Ikora. And there, beside her is Cayde, "Hey Guardian, miss me?" and our guardian slowly walks over, bringing him into a bearhug. I need this. We all need this.
The first thing I thought of the minute I saw Cayde 6 The Exo the myth the legend, I immediately thought of the last quote I remember you saying (talking to BYF here), "I'm pretty sure this is the last video I will probably ever make on the subject of Cayde 6". I guess Bungie decided to prove you wrong. And I'm very happy about that. I've missed Cayde for so long.
Could the ace of spades maybe act as a new ghost? It has the energy? So long as the guns survives he does? Kind of like a symbiotic bond? He has always had loads of lore behind that gun. Could be cool and unique. Also I’d be interesting if that is indeed the inside of the traveler, can he leave back to the city?
After reading the lore on the ship you can get from the season vendor kiosk (about the Titan Joxer who got mangled in the season intro cinematic), some form of time manipulation seems like it could a possibility, or somehow the portal plays into someones deepest desires and manifests itself into a disarming appearance before it rips you apart.

I feel like cayde is back because not only would it be impactful but because the traveler is using cayde as it’s ace so that it can possibly speak through cayde from time to time to our guardian to give a direct connection to the living so that we can win one last battle
Could there be any reason why it could not be Ikora's "nightmare" given shape as we saw her have Cayde but in this case the light provided a physical body for him and the darkness of the nightmare created the memory/mind
It’s our Cayde, Ace of Spades and all. Ikora stole his body and took it inside the traveler, where nothing dies as it is the centre of life and creation. So it brings Cayde back to life. This also explains the lack of a ghost.
The reveal is awesome, I'm going to love the story behind Cayde been alive and well, It's also nice to see him again. On the topic of Cayde tho, Maybe what he has become is the final form of a guardian and what a guardian should be, We rely on our Ghost for both light and power, We aren't light nor can we use it without our Ghost, Maybe Cayde is the first person to become light in that he needs no ghost and is able to sustain his life and power after becoming light.
Ill copy paste my comment from the actual trailer. Crackpot theory time: 1. This place is like the field of reeds for guardians after final death 2. This isn't cayde. Or at least the one we know. Notice he says kiddo. He never referred to ikora as kiddo. And notice how tidy his armor is. The real cayde was never this tidy. Also ikoras ghost seems almost hesitant/nervous, that doesn't strike me as something ikora's ghost would do ESPECIALLY seeing cayde in front of them. 3. Based on 1 im going to say this expansion is going to be focused on us seeing/saving famous gurdians for one final showdown. (Ex. Felwinter, dredgen yor, liu feng. Etc.) If so that is awsome.
I can definitely agree with almost everything you're saying, and I don't wanna be THAT guy, but Dredgen Yor was no guardian. He did have the powers of a guardian, but he wasn't a guardian in principle. He was a guardian killer. Now Shin Malphur is very much a guardian in principle, but I can't recall if he ever had a ghost to assist him.

Damn i miss Cayde. Imagine how different so much could have been if he was still around. His high risk high reward plays still being a possability. So much could have been so different. Amazing how much one death can rob from the future.
It's Cayde. That's all I really need lol My theory is, if this indeed inside the Traveler, maybe the Traveler pulled him in when he died. Maybe the Traveler pulls worthy Guardians into itself. Also, the speculation that it's Light that is seen in Cayde and the Ace, it would make sense if it is, indeed, our Cayde. Being bathed in Light would explain how he is alive.
If u look near the waterfall,there seems to be some sort of buildings like a settlement Also maybe the energy that can be seen in cayde's eyes is related to new energy type,the next subclass Or maybe its not related to light and dark but to the veil
honestly I don't think we're gonna get another subclass. all the subclass nodes are full now, unless they add another section like it was back when stasis was added. but the Nightmare theory is very cool

I feel like the drink Ikora is holding could be important to this teaser, could she be 'drinking the deep' to make this connection to cayde or something like that. So excited to see how the story develops!!
Definitely an intriguing tease for sure! My initial thought was it was something like the “portal” itself manifesting a copy of Cayde from Ikora’s memories. We know she was haunted by him as a Nightmare and thinks of him a LOT. We know the Witness combined light and dark, matter and mind, and then linked it up to “the memory of the universe” to create this “portal”. So what if it’s capable of manifesting your thoughts or something? Like one thing that bothers me is how Cayde has Ace when the weapon should be with the player-and why is it shattered? Hmm. I don’t know but man I love the way they did this reveal since it can create so much imagination and speculation, and really teases the possibilities of what’s going on. Hopefully they don’t drop the ball because god dang this is quite a story beat! Looking forward to the showcase in August! So many questions!
Im guessing it's a more powerful form of the "Nightmares" or atleast the Traveler's Version of them. We've seen that we can remove the darkness from the Nightmares, almost as if they are truly there but in ghost form. Ikora already had to deal with a Nightmare of Cayde berating her for his choices. Perhaps, inside the Traveler thanks to the Witness since he is made out of Darkness brought back a physical and alive Cayde. Notice how he looks like he is made out of lignt and even his Ace of Spades reminds me a lot of the Traveler's Chosen effect. That's my thoughts on it. Edit: Wanted to clarify some stuff. I'm guessing since the Final Shape is both of Light and Dark that the Nightmare of Cayde got life, we've seem the chaos of Light and Darkness in the Root of Nightmares.

I think there’s a lore tab from season of the wish on a ship, where it’s revealed that Crow has regrets killing Cayde 6. And wishes he didn’t, Crows talking with Mara, he leaves and Riven was pretending to be Mara, I believe Cayde is truly made of Dream Dust
I think one thing I was at least happy about the trailer is that Cayde was being super whimsical, but actually serious. For once, he died and stayed dead until now. He's changed. Also the energy coming off him looks similar more towards Taken than light because it reminds of the DLC he dies in, Forsaken, with Riven. The energy comes off his eyes and out of his mouth similar to Voice of Riven.
In my opinion the light coming out of the cracks of the ace of spades is definitely related to the traveler rather than the taken. This is because it looks a lot like the exotic version of the travelers chosen which is a weapon imbued with the light.
Based on how Bungie likes to draw on old story beats to create new ones in the future, maybe Ghosts hold sort of like a memory or “backup” of a guardian and when sundance died, light blew up and released into the universe, maybe that light reconnected with the traveller and was able to rebuild Cayde in its likeness
It isn't Cayde. It is the Gardener. This is the final board moves between the Gardener and the Winnower. It is channeling an image from Ikoa's mind, to form a connection. Everyone has been so overwhelmed by Cayde, now Amanda, I bet we will see an Amanda image at some point.

Seeming as the final chapter is ultimately Light vs Dark.. I believe its light, as much as Cayde is back, I think others on both light and dark will return.
Cayde being back could be as simple as fixing a machine.. but maybe with light or the taken. His gun might be a metaphor for that. It looks like his gun was glued back together with energy
I'm gonna agree with a lot of people saying this is the "light" Version of cayde. It would make sense if we are tied so heavily to the traveler that there would be some type of blueprint of each guardian to use as some kind of antibody to protect itself wherever it actually is. And if death is one of the only ways inside, it makes sense for the witness to be able to get in given what the leaked cutscene tells us
As I said on the trailer’s comment section, Cayde looks like he has the same effect as Traveler’s Chosen. If it was explained how it was rebuilt, I’d guess Cayde was repaired in a similar way
It looks like it could be the Witnesses homeworld, when the Traveler first appeared or just before - The Witness could then exact it’s will over the Traveler from that place in time.
I'm predicting one of three things: - We've learned how to Take and we're bringing back Guardians to help us short term. - We use an Ahamkara wish. If you look at Ahamkara images, it shows a similar glow to his eyes and AoS. - He's a remnant in the Traveller, brought out to help. We know the traveler can't ressurect a Guardian if their ghost is dead, but what if they still hold onto their soul? The way Ikora talks, it's not "omg you're back" it's a "You're here for now" kind of vibe. She's not excited that he's back, there's a sense of hurt there, like she knows he'll be gone. So he's not back forever, just for now. I do think the Ascendant plane is a factor somehow. The glow he has and AoS just match Toland and all that stuff too well. This is why I'm leaning towards our inevitable conclusion to learning the Darkness, which is learning to Take.
My theory is that the portal leads to a world of Memory. It took Darkness, which is concerned with the mind and memory, specifically Darkness from the Veil, described as mind and memory of the universe, but it also needed Light from our Ghost, Light which is concerned with the physical, to make it possible to enter that world in a physical way. It's not unlike how Lightbearers can use the Light to physically step inside the Vex Network
Gonna throw in my two glimmer: It's a Light copy of Cayde, and he is just the first Guardian we find. It is my theory that the Ghosts were generated by the Traveler as a last line of defense, each Ghost tasked with finding someone who will fight from the very core of their being (and potentially died fighting), and given the ability to return those beings to a combat capable form, whether a fresh corpse, or 3000 year old bones in a mass grave. This, eventually, created a fighting force so persistent that it not only protected the crippled Traveler, it destroyed some of the most powerful beings that hunted it. However, I think now that is not all. We saw with Savathuun, that the Traveler doesn't let an opportunity go to waste (A Hive god turned to the Light would have been one heck of a force multiplier if she wasn't up her own backside), and a Final Death might only apply outside the Traveler. Ghosts are incredibly powerful little things, capable of fabricating people, equipment, and whole freaking souls from nothing but bones, dust, and air. All of that requires an immense amount of data, which potentially could be backed up or transmitted to the Traveler upon a Ghost's destruction. Once the Traveler has that data, it would be a simple matter to re-create a Guardian inside itself, as one more line of defense. So what we see is Cayde right up until Sundance was toasted. Potentially, we might also see this as a way to return the Iron Lords, all the Guardians who died at the Battle of Six Fronts, the various Hunter Vanguards, etc. There is probably some limitation, like if they were killed by the Hive in certain ways where the Ghost's light was absorbed, so we might not see someone like Osiris, because Sagira was destroyed by a Hive ritual, or much of Eris Morn's fireteam.
Cayde saw that Taniks is coming back in the Final Shape and decided to take matters into his own hands.
Maybe when a guardian dies they go to the traveler?

Maybe the Traveler intercepts peoples consciousness upon death and uses ghosts to put that consciousness into a new body. The ghosts may possess some information about their guardians that’s required to write someone’s consciousness onto a new body. Without one, the guardian isn’t dead or alive.

Something interesting: In season of the haunted, it was revealed that Ikora's nightmare was Cayde, but unlike everybody else, we never resolved her nightmare like we did for Crow, Caiatl, and Zavala or like we did for Eris. And from the Trespasser lore tab, it seemed as though she backed down and walked away, don't know if she ever resolved it.
Somebody mentioned the possibility of Cayde being a 'lightmare', if you would, as opposed to nightmares. Makes Ikora's sole presence in the cutscene more critical. Ikora's inability to deal with her guilt and grief previously may be the very reason Cayde and Cayde alone is there, as opposed to seeing every dead guardian or nightmare.

I think it's the other way around. The tone here starts off us hopeless, then the music takes a more somber yet heroic turn as Cayde is not only revealed but says the words "I'm here now." Indicating that things might not be as bleak as we think they are. Then the original Destiny theme swells up. It's hopeful

The light radiating from the Ace of Spades as well as Cayde himself reminds me of the reforged Travelers chosen when it's at Max stacks of light, this glow through the cracks.

If he is indeed back as a Lightbearing Guardian, it would make sense that he and Sundance are hesitant to have Sundance out in the open now. However, it might be something along the lines of Valhalla where ALL of the Traveler's Guardians live on in a "paradise" like place where they await the final battle between Light and Dark or the Gardener and the Winnower.
This theory is definitely the most plausible and what I also think is more likely. A name like “Final Shape” implies this is the end. This is it. This is where you end up. It might shed some light on what pure light looks like it at least what the proposed vision for pure light looks like. Final shape is very much a metaphor for a finale of some sorts. Perhaps the witness needs to destroy the inside of the traveler or corrupt it because it’s the only thing left that allows resurrection.

Lol Also in the video Byf made regarding Fellwinter and Shaxx, Lord Shaxx and Fellwinter had a talk about how Shaxx would protect his people from the incoming cold storm. Shaxx like the Chad he is said that he would protect them with his light, and not his exact quote, but he mentions his solar hammer ult as what he would use to keep them warm and safe. I think the powers work on anything honestly. We havnt really seen anything our powers won't work on except for the Lightfall artifact.

The warlock casted well and it described the light imbue the weapons of the splicers and cabal with light power
I'm entirely on board with the idea that it's destiny's version of Valhalla. Guardians die, and are manifested in light wherever that is, I assume inside the traveler. Just makes the most sense to me.

I have a feeling that cayde may be like the travelers version of a nightmare. Not actually cayde, but the memories and important parts of cayde before he died. The traveler brought back said Cayde traveler-nightmare to guide us on how to save itself.
The Nightmares are very much a Darkness thing, given Darkness powers are that of the mind while Light powers are physical.

Cayde hypothesis: The veil is described as the gateway to the memory of the universe, the veil is used to open the portal. So, at the other side of the portal, cayde is likely a manifestation of our memories of him.

Seeing Cayde and hearing Nathan Fillion as his voice was a dual shock. A lot of what I caught from the teaser Byf covered; the portal, no Sundance, Cayde seems to know Ikora, he has Ace somehow even though it's safely in our vaults. Also, as he said, there's SO MANY ways this could go. This ranks right up there with when we saw Hive Ghosts for the first time. Bungie pulling a Roddy Piper by changing the questions when we think we know the answers.
I just had a thought on Ace though. Most Golden Guns for most Hunters look like Last Word, yea? Cayde's looked like Ace.

It would be so awesome if the guardian who died in the Savathun’s Song strike made an appearance even if it was just her voice. Could be a really cool moment with Sloane as well. If both Cayde and Ikora are inside of the traveler, then I really wonder what the Witness has been doing at that time, considering the landscape looks pretty beautiful, guess time will have to tell. Either way I really hope that Bungie nails it with the story in TFS, especially after the negative reception that Lightfall got. From what I heard, the version of Lightfall we were originally gonna get has now become The Final Shape, and I really want this expansion to end our soon to be 10-year long journey to end on the best note possible.

I can only assume that Cayde will not be leaving this “afterlife”/inside the traveller situation, so I’m hoping there is another social space, and I’m hoping it’s a true open world where we can just walk out of the social space and go out to the open world after collecting your bounties or quests whatever is there but we’ll see
Bit of a shot in the dark here: back on the Glykon, we communed with the darkness, but we also got bits of dialogue that seemed to be from the light. One of the voices that represented the light, or the traveler whatever, was Cayde. I think that there was more of a connection between the traveler and Cayde than we were aware. Cayde seemed to know quite a bit about the Deep Stone Crypt, even after the memory wipes involved with becoming an exo. So much so, that he suspected that Braytech would hunt him down (See: his caches) even with the very obvious fact that, at the time of his death, Europa’s exo facilities were probably running on autopilot. He placed particular emphasis on the “Long slow whisper”, believed to have been connected to the darkness. Cayde was also seemingly aware of the Exo’s connection to the Vex, having (rather irresponsibly) attempted to interface directly with a number of vex devices on Nessus during the red war. Cayde also almost never discussed the traveler in a spiritual way the same way Ikora and Zavala do.
I think he found a way to purge his exo body of the darkness, through direct communion with the traveler. that’s possibly why he seems so confused in this trailer; the darkness is all about the immaterial, specifically consciousness. If he’s purely light, reaching an understanding of the traveler as an individual entity, not a deity, then of course he’s confused. Without any dark power at all, his mind is probably fractured-that tends to happen when you get shot in the head.

If he was purely light he would have no memory of what he was before. That is a darkness feature.
@@aceellis1660 ah, but that's not wholly true. Afterall, Ghaul became a fully Light entity at the end of the Red War before the traveler struck him down and he clearly remembered who he was. So there is president for this sort of thing.
Also, the removal of memory only seemes to happen upon initially receiving the Light, as Guardians can remember things after the initial revival, even after further deaths. Really, that's the more compelling evidence here. Afterall, becoming a Guardian already means you are a Light based existence, and there's no evidence to suggest that becoming a fully Light entity after that point would wipe your mind a second time.
To add on to Cayde's extensive and almost scholarly knowledge of Exo, Vex, and Light, I think it would be interesting if his resurrection involves him reaching what I presume would be his ultimate calling (desperately trying to keep myself from just using the word destiny and it is harder than it looks), which is to surpass the Man with the Golden Gun as the greatest Gunslinger who ever lived.
Because of Cayde's "wherever the hell this is" line I believe that in response to something that the witness will do in future seasons before final shape, the traveler will directly revive cayde and hence why his weapon and eyes are radiating light so intensly.
Why tho, we love him but why would the traveller need him specifically and never do it for anyone else if it could
I like to think this is the real physical body of Cayde being resurrected in some manner. If you look at his face, you can still see some of the physical damage and scars he sustained while fighting against the Scorn in Forsaken. They likely fixed him up a bit after retrieving his body to make him more presentable and give him back some of his dignity so to speak for his funeral like we do in the real world. That all leads me to believe this is the real Cayde.
I kinda hope they don’t bring him back, it feels like it will devalue everything we went thru in forsaken. Believe me if he was back I would be elated, but still

What if that's not the inside of the Traveler? At the end of Lightfall, when the Witness enters the portal, you can see that the portal is displaced from the surface of the Traveler. What if the triangle is a portal to the birthplace of the Light, and the Witness went there to destroy it from the root?

@Jack Mack not only did no one "hack" to find a cutscene but if you actually played lightfall, you would know that the witness doesn't just want to destroy the traveler and kill everything.

The other two shots (Savathun and Nezarec) are moments that have already happened, but us fighting a bunch of Vex alongside Misraaks and Caiatl hasn't yet. Splicer was close, but Caiatl wasn't there. Curious.
I think the Ace of Spades Cayde is holding is simply empowered by Memento Mori, the exotic perk, just as a symbol for his death.

Pretty sure it is our Cayde since Ikora is feeling him in on everything that has happened since he died. My theory is that the energy irradiating from Cayde and Ace is indeed light he was brought back by The Traveler because he still has a role to play in the final battle (or war?) once it concludes he will pass away it feels like, also most likely they are indeed inside the traveler
I think Cayde is just a memory within the Traveler. Like data and memory still recorded within the Light, and now that we are inside the Traveler, we are seeing its memories of all its guardians that probably died and lost their ghost.
Almost like the show The Expanse, with Agent Joe Miller and the protomolecule.
My personal theory is the fact that taking and ressing a guardian are two sides of the same coin. Both lose their former self, but through the light you keep your personality and quirks. The traveler takes the spark that ghosts find “takes” it through the light and sends it back as the guardian is raised from death, creating a fresh imprint that has memories built upon since being raised

Cayde's New Energy reminds me of the Traveler's Chosen Exotic. So my headcannon is that this is Cayde-6, Reforged by the Traveller.

Im so excited to see Cayde back. I screamed when I saw the reveal. I feel like Cayde and other guardians who have lost their ghost and died are sent to a kind of paradise inside the traveler which the witness has tapped into. And we somehow make it into the traveler and bring Cayde back.
In a personal opinion I'd like to put forward the notion that Cayde's resurrection is a defense mechanism by the traveller, feeling the danger from the Witness inside of itself it brought back the remnants of Cayde (one of the greatest all round guardians) as a way for the "remnant" of Cayde to guide the other followers of the light, through his guidance we will be shown the full potential of the light and darkness leading to the banishment of the Witness from inside the Traveller.
I say this because the past few years have basically only been about the darkness and the power it brings and in doing so the lightbearers have lost their way with the light subclasses we all know and love. It would also be kind of a twist to show that even with all the hard work we've put into mastering darkness, only through the use of light can we drive the Witness back (a little cliche but it would be a good fit for the ending)

A theory i had was maybe ikora dies, but seeing how her ghost is with her i dont think that’s a possibility, but i love the way ikora says “wish you couldve been there” in the exact same tone of voice as when she said “we shouldve been there” after he died is an amazing parallel
I feel like Cayde not having a physical ghost but being infused with that light could mean Sundance's scattered essence may have been able to be infused into him post final death. Maybe something about the fact that he's an exo facilitated this where a fleshy type guardian probably couldnt have this happen. Probably not the case, but we never get to meet many ghosts outside of Sagira and Glint. Having such an eccentric and bombastic guardian like Cayde, I've always wondered what her personality would be like.

"The domain of the light, is the domain of the physical." The realm of the dark is that of memories and emotions. Pain. When you put them together, you can make memories physical. I'm speculating, but this would make sense why Cayde can come back. At least in the Traveler.

Apart from the excitement that came from seeing cayde again, I am honestly much more excited to see you finally cover Marathon's lore. As someone who is too young to have experienced it back in the day, learning the lore from third parties has made me appreciate it a lot. I especially love how it ties in to some of the current Bungie ips and lore. Very excited!

I think there are 2 possibilities that make the most sense to me. 1. Due to being an exo and created through the use of darkness, because of the darkness' connection to the mind it preserved him. 2. Since their inside the traveler which controls the physical, some mix of both dark and light took the memory of Cayde that Ikora held and manifested it into a physical form, merging the two sources of power.

this hits me in the heart ive been a hunter main since y1 d1 when i was in 8th grade then i preordered forsaken and had the poster of the hunter carrying cayde on my wall it that expansion was easily my favorite because i like im sure many others felt had that silly class loyalty and when our vanguard died oh man what a moment to see him back is both nostalgic and so exciting for the story implications
Somethings are for certain, this is our Cayde. Lack of ghost, Ikora telling him he missed so much it feels more than likely he’s our timelines.
Also the light on him is definitely traveler light, and not taken corruption. I feel this is one of many things; a guardian afterlife inside the traveler. Cayde is actually a manifestation from the traveler, either made to guide us or help defeat the witness. Or perhaps this is a light version of a nightmare, and many more explanations.
The second option has me hoping potentially more dead guardians maybe brought back in the same way to help us deafest the Witness and save the Traveler.
If it is like an afterlife forblightbearers... that would mean lucent hive are there as well.

I need our character reunited properly with Cayde, big mission, pull some badassery, then we arrive to a location meeting with Ikora. And there, beside her is Cayde, "Hey Guardian, miss me?" and our guardian slowly walks over, bringing him into a bearhug. I need this. We all need this.
The first thing I thought of the minute I saw Cayde 6 The Exo the myth the legend, I immediately thought of the last quote I remember you saying (talking to BYF here), "I'm pretty sure this is the last video I will probably ever make on the subject of Cayde 6". I guess Bungie decided to prove you wrong. And I'm very happy about that. I've missed Cayde for so long.

This might give us insight into how our ghosts resurrect us. Perhaps each time we are brought back they store a sort of snapshot within the traveler.
After reading the lore on the ship you can get from the season vendor kiosk (about the Titan Joxer who got mangled in the season intro cinematic), some form of time manipulation seems like it could a possibility, or somehow the portal plays into someones deepest desires and manifests itself into a disarming appearance before it rips you apart.

I feel like cayde is back because not only would it be impactful but because the traveler is using cayde as it’s ace so that it can possibly speak through cayde from time to time to our guardian to give a direct connection to the living so that we can win one last battle
Could there be any reason why it could not be Ikora's "nightmare" given shape as we saw her have Cayde but in this case the light provided a physical body for him and the darkness of the nightmare created the memory/mind
So Cayde is now the only Hunter vanguard to not die permanently or go missing forever I guess

It’s our Cayde, Ace of Spades and all. Ikora stole his body and took it inside the traveler, where nothing dies as it is the centre of life and creation. So it brings Cayde back to life. This also explains the lack of a ghost.

The reveal is awesome, I'm going to love the story behind Cayde been alive and well, It's also nice to see him again. On the topic of Cayde tho, Maybe what he has become is the final form of a guardian and what a guardian should be, We rely on our Ghost for both light and power, We aren't light nor can we use it without our Ghost, Maybe Cayde is the first person to become light in that he needs no ghost and is able to sustain his life and power after becoming light.
Eagerly awaiting to hear you talk about Marathon too now. Been a fan of that series since I was a kid.

Crackpot theory time:
1. This place is like the field of reeds for guardians after final death
2. This isn't cayde. Or at least the one we know. Notice he says kiddo. He never referred to ikora as kiddo. And notice how tidy his armor is. The real cayde was never this tidy. Also ikoras ghost seems almost hesitant/nervous, that doesn't strike me as something ikora's ghost would do ESPECIALLY seeing cayde in front of them.
3. Based on 1 im going to say this expansion is going to be focused on us seeing/saving famous gurdians for one final showdown. (Ex. Felwinter, dredgen yor, liu feng. Etc.) If so that is awsome.
I can definitely agree with almost everything you're saying, and I don't wanna be THAT guy, but Dredgen Yor was no guardian. He did have the powers of a guardian, but he wasn't a guardian in principle. He was a guardian killer. Now Shin Malphur is very much a guardian in principle, but I can't recall if he ever had a ghost to assist him.

My theory is, if this indeed inside the Traveler, maybe the Traveler pulled him in when he died. Maybe the Traveler pulls worthy Guardians into itself. Also, the speculation that it's Light that is seen in Cayde and the Ace, it would make sense if it is, indeed, our Cayde. Being bathed in Light would explain how he is alive.

Definitely an intriguing tease for sure! My initial thought was it was something like the “portal” itself manifesting a copy of Cayde from Ikora’s memories. We know she was haunted by him as a Nightmare and thinks of him a LOT. We know the Witness combined light and dark, matter and mind, and then linked it up to “the memory of the universe” to create this “portal”. So what if it’s capable of manifesting your thoughts or something? Like one thing that bothers me is how Cayde has Ace when the weapon should be with the player-and why is it shattered? Hmm. I don’t know but man I love the way they did this reveal since it can create so much imagination and speculation, and really teases the possibilities of what’s going on. Hopefully they don’t drop the ball because god dang this is quite a story beat! Looking forward to the showcase in August! So many questions!
Im guessing it's a more powerful form of the "Nightmares" or atleast the Traveler's Version of them. We've seen that we can remove the darkness from the Nightmares, almost as if they are truly there but in ghost form. Ikora already had to deal with a Nightmare of Cayde berating her for his choices.
Perhaps, inside the Traveler thanks to the Witness since he is made out of Darkness brought back a physical and alive Cayde. Notice how he looks like he is made out of lignt and even his Ace of Spades reminds me a lot of the Traveler's Chosen effect.
That's my thoughts on it.
Edit: Wanted to clarify some stuff. I'm guessing since the Final Shape is both of Light and Dark that the Nightmare of Cayde got life, we've seem the chaos of Light and Darkness in the Root of Nightmares.
This is what I was thinking as well (scrolled down to see if anyone else said this before I posted). If there are darkness nightmares, it would make sense for the light to have its version of them, right?

I think there’s a lore tab from season of the wish on a ship, where it’s revealed that Crow has regrets killing Cayde 6. And wishes he didn’t, Crows talking with Mara, he leaves and Riven was pretending to be Mara, I believe Cayde is truly made of Dream Dust

I think one thing I was at least happy about the trailer is that Cayde was being super whimsical, but actually serious. For once, he died and stayed dead until now. He's changed.
Also the energy coming off him looks similar more towards Taken than light because it reminds of the DLC he dies in, Forsaken, with Riven. The energy comes off his eyes and out of his mouth similar to Voice of Riven.
In my opinion the light coming out of the cracks of the ace of spades is definitely related to the traveler rather than the taken.
This is because it looks a lot like the exotic version of the travelers chosen which is a weapon imbued with the light.
Based on how Bungie likes to draw on old story beats to create new ones in the future, maybe Ghosts hold sort of like a memory or “backup” of a guardian and when sundance died, light blew up and released into the universe, maybe that light reconnected with the traveller and was able to rebuild Cayde in its likeness
It isn't Cayde. It is the Gardener. This is the final board moves between the Gardener and the Winnower. It is channeling an image from Ikoa's mind, to form a connection. Everyone has been so overwhelmed by Cayde, now Amanda, I bet we will see an Amanda image at some point.
Whatever the reason for however long, for now hes gonna be back and for that im glad.. i just miss him and to have him back in any way shape or form is enough for me.
Seeming as the final chapter is ultimately Light vs Dark.. I believe its light, as much as Cayde is back, I think others on both light and dark will return.
Cayde being back could be as simple as fixing a machine.. but maybe with light or the taken. His gun might be a metaphor for that. It looks like his gun was glued back together with energy

I'm gonna agree with a lot of people saying this is the "light" Version of cayde. It would make sense if we are tied so heavily to the traveler that there would be some type of blueprint of each guardian to use as some kind of antibody to protect itself wherever it actually is. And if death is one of the only ways inside, it makes sense for the witness to be able to get in given what the leaked cutscene tells us
As I said on the trailer’s comment section, Cayde looks like he has the same effect as Traveler’s Chosen. If it was explained how it was rebuilt, I’d guess Cayde was repaired in a similar way
It looks like it could be the Witnesses homeworld, when the Traveler first appeared or just before - The Witness could then exact it’s will over the Traveler from that place in time.

I'm predicting one of three things:
- We've learned how to Take and we're bringing back Guardians to help us short term.
- We use an Ahamkara wish. If you look at Ahamkara images, it shows a similar glow to his eyes and AoS.
- He's a remnant in the Traveller, brought out to help. We know the traveler can't ressurect a Guardian if their ghost is dead, but what if they still hold onto their soul?
The way Ikora talks, it's not "omg you're back" it's a "You're here for now" kind of vibe. She's not excited that he's back, there's a sense of hurt there, like she knows he'll be gone. So he's not back forever, just for now. I do think the Ascendant plane is a factor somehow. The glow he has and AoS just match Toland and all that stuff too well. This is why I'm leaning towards our inevitable conclusion to learning the Darkness, which is learning to Take.
I definitely think it's Light more than Taken energy. Ace looks just like Traveler's Chosen when you get full stacks
My theory is that the portal leads to a world of Memory. It took Darkness, which is concerned with the mind and memory, specifically Darkness from the Veil, described as mind and memory of the universe, but it also needed Light from our Ghost, Light which is concerned with the physical, to make it possible to enter that world in a physical way. It's not unlike how Lightbearers can use the Light to physically step inside the Vex Network
Gonna throw in my two glimmer: It's a Light copy of Cayde, and he is just the first Guardian we find. It is my theory that the Ghosts were generated by the Traveler as a last line of defense, each Ghost tasked with finding someone who will fight from the very core of their being (and potentially died fighting), and given the ability to return those beings to a combat capable form, whether a fresh corpse, or 3000 year old bones in a mass grave. This, eventually, created a fighting force so persistent that it not only protected the crippled Traveler, it destroyed some of the most powerful beings that hunted it.
However, I think now that is not all. We saw with Savathuun, that the Traveler doesn't let an opportunity go to waste (A Hive god turned to the Light would have been one heck of a force multiplier if she wasn't up her own backside), and a Final Death might only apply outside the Traveler. Ghosts are incredibly powerful little things, capable of fabricating people, equipment, and whole freaking souls from nothing but bones, dust, and air. All of that requires an immense amount of data, which potentially could be backed up or transmitted to the Traveler upon a Ghost's destruction. Once the Traveler has that data, it would be a simple matter to re-create a Guardian inside itself, as one more line of defense. So what we see is Cayde right up until Sundance was toasted. Potentially, we might also see this as a way to return the Iron Lords, all the Guardians who died at the Battle of Six Fronts, the various Hunter Vanguards, etc. There is probably some limitation, like if they were killed by the Hive in certain ways where the Ghost's light was absorbed, so we might not see someone like Osiris, because Sagira was destroyed by a Hive ritual, or much of Eris Morn's fireteam.
