Alhamdulillah. Exactly I always prefer the way u had explained the matter. In present society parents sometimes show their strictness to their children about this matter and unfortunately it is one of the cause of the haram relationship ( May ALLAH repent us and protect us from this type of fitnah). Parents should grow the cooperative mentality if it is lack in them . One thing I just wanna say to every parent .Don't treat your children as if they can't feel the unconditional love for them and then see 50% problem will be vanished In Shaa ALLAH . Actually until a child becomes father or mother they can't properly feel the genuine love for children . So, treat well with children as u had crossed the age already and know better Alhamdulillah how to deal with anything .
My parents are a perfect balance of conservative and liberal. But we’ve never had a bond where I could share anything with them. I’m scared of their reaction or anger. 🙂
The only flaw in them is they care a lot about what people will say.

You’re not a weakling at all! It’s jus the situation you were born in and given to you as a test. Some people face harder tests than others and we just have to remember Allah swt at all times to help us get through. Easier said than done, but just remember you’re definitely not a weakling :)
I was never able to tell my family anything either in fear of their temper tantrums, throwing things, breaking things, abusive conduct etc, so I just stopped sharing anything. I know it's horrible to say but I'm relieved my parents are passed away. Maybe a leader at your local masjid can be your mahram and help you to meet a spouse?

Two old ladies from among the Jewish ladies entered upon me and said' "The dead are punished in their graves," but I thought they were telling a lie and did not believe them in the beginning. When they went away and the Prophet (ﷺ) entered upon me, I said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! Two old ladies.." and told him the whole story. He said, "They told the truth; the dead are really punished, to the extent that all the animals hear (the sound resulting from) their punishment." Since then I always saw him seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave in his prayers.

I could never discuss anything with parents and they never entertained the idea of respecting my opinions or ideas. It was their way or no way. Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan said, in his answer on the ruling about young men speaking to young women on the telephone: “It is not permissible for young men to speak to young women because of the fitnah involved, unless the girl is engaged to the man who is talking to her, and they talk only about matters pertaining to their engagement; but it is preferable and safer for him to speak to her guardian about that.” (al-Muntaqa min Fataawa al-Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, 3/163, 164).

No it's not that easy. We are forbidden to be in seclusion with a non-mahram. So how can we know the likes and dislikes of that person personally by him? We can find out that through our mahrams or with mahrams. We shouldn't compromise our religion for being modern. But yes! As I think a girl can say to his father that she likes a guy(only in heart after being aware of his character).

Be careful of fitna because in Islam boy and girl are not allowed to see each other likes and dislikes without mehram, if you like someone go to her father and in the presence of mahram both of you know each other's likes and dislikes. which way noman Ali Khan describes it's totally unacceptable in islam.

I went to a roman Catholic primary school which treated me like sh!t because I have alot of learning difficulties and they didn't want to help me with them, so after that I ditched religion and it's been great. However, learning about other people's religions is fascinating and I love it!
