I just got one (4th gen August smartlock) but it doesn't work away from home. When I open the app it tries but cannot connect. The app has a popup that pops up asking if I want to purchase an August bridge which I don't understand, since the August website says that the 4th gen model doesn't require a separate bridge to connect remotely. So, I am confused.
Right, withou the August Bridge you cannot unlock it remotely with the app or Alexa. You can use HomeKit to do it tough, as long as you have a Homebridge hub like an Apple TV, iPad or HomePod
that's because you are only connecting to the lock via bluetooth. bluetooth only works when you are outside the door and connect to the lock. if you are away from home you will have to use wifi. you should have connected to wifi (on top of bluetooth) in the app.
Have had this about 6 months. Got locked out of our home . Just days discovered and it stays grey.... had to break back window. Needed this to work 100% and it did not. It has its own built in wifi which is cool. But if it doesn't work,. It doesn't work.
Hi Andrew I bought this lock looking at your video iam really happy about it but the only problem is it’s not responding to my HomeKit it shows me no response can you please help me with that ?
my 4th gen refuses to work with HomeKit I have talked to august support and apple and no-one can figure out why.... its kind of frustrating I just like everything being in the same app. anyone have this problem or maybe a solution that is not any of the general troubleshoot suggestions?
Help! Was HomeKit easy to set up for you? Did you set it up through the August app or directly in HomeKit? I can’t get it to work either way! Works in the app just fine. Just can’t connect it to HomeKit!
We had that issue too. August support recommends resetting the lock with the red button on the back and pairing it directly through HomeKit. Here’s the troubleshooting article: support.august.com/article/troubleshooting-homekit-and-the-wi-fi-smart-lock-H1mBdwg5L
Before watching this vid: Why do so many people advise me to get the August Smart Lock? Me after watching this vid: Hye, you should have opt for August Smart Lock
Is HomeKit pairing via bluetooth or via wifi? I'm asking because if it's via wifi, I can pair this directly to Home Assistant and avoid the cloud based August integration.
Although the August Smart lock may add some convenience to your particular setup. The Baldwin Reserve deadbolt you have installed is a piece of crap and can easily be picked and or bumped open.
If this is the only lock on the door what's to stop someone smashing the glass reaching inside and just opening the door? I assume you can just turn it from the inside to unlock?
It would be helpful to know what the greatest estimated wifi and bluetooth range is. How far can the August Smart Lock be from the device that signals its operation? Also, can it be used to secure outdoor gates?
I know im randomly asking but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any tips you can offer me
We get this a lot but it doesn’t quite hold up. This isn’t an actual lock that can be picked. You still keep your deadbolt. It’s as easy to pick as your deadbolt is. This makes any deadbolt more secure though by notifying you when the lock is unlocked as well as when the door is opened.
Thank you for the video! I purchased mines and the installation was seamless! However, the next day tried to control it via my homekit and it wouldn't work. I did some trouble shooting and it works via the August app, but not via Homekit. I've turned my phone off and on to see if it would reset, but nothing. I troubled shoot my WiFi and BLuetooth and they are working as well. Other than removing it from the Homekit app and reinstalling, I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem?
I've read that this device needs a wifi network 2.4GHz. if it's 5GHz, it causes issues. Make sure you are using a 2.4GHz (Not sure if this is your case)
I had the same issue. Literally hundreds of people on message boards complaining about this. Basically it is unusable on Homekit and I am returning it. I can't believe all these apple oriented entities are pushing this broken product. Ive lost faith in the tech media's ability to provide useful evaluations of these products.
What happens if someone says hey Siri unlock front door and your HomePod picks it up. I can tell my HomePod from outside my house to turn aircon on and turn lights on.
I just don’t trust wifi door locks. Can’t they be hacked super easy? I think I liked your last smart lock you showed off a couple months ago. It wasn’t wifi.
I have this lock. I thought about that same thing too. But it made me realize that privacy is the best security. If no one knows you have it, it won’t be hacked. It’s not like hackers can go door to door without someone noticing. If someone hacks your WiFi (which really isn’t all that likely to be honest) and finds this lock, whoever hacks you will probably wind up unlocking/locking the door just to make sure they got in. This lock will send you notifications when someone other than you unlocks it. Plus no one will know from the outside of you have this lock because you’d use your existing keyhole on the outside. I’d give it a shot!
Locks just keep honest people honest. My door locks are there for the protection of criminals. It keeps them away from my dogs. Just installed this lock today. Still learning. Appears that this is going to work. Auto lock feature nice. Old lady forgets to lock the door.
@@fiturise7015 you’re new to iOS? I’ll help :) Green is a measurement of exercise in minutes. Hence the weird flex but ok comment, since it shows 458mins of exercise. Might even be having a joke competition with a friend to see who exercise the most.
Nope. Not happening. Hasn’t happened. Especially with HomeKit. If you have an intruder who is capable enough to do that, you have other problems. There are much easier ways into a house.
AppleInsider When I wrote remotely I didn’t mean from the cloud. Since the device in question has a wireless interface (wifi or BT) I find it hard to believe that it is impossible to break in it. Wifi and BT implementations for IoT devices have showed us (and will show us in the future) that security is not present during the design phase of the product but came later. Well this useless gadget makes it easier for my grandparents to come in, reduce risk of loosing keys, automations, and notifications for when the door was locked/unlocked.
Wow, you are lucky. I've had this lock for over a year and I cannot get it to work with home kit. I contacted August support and got the run around.
Can you twist the dial with your hand to unlock it or do you have to use the app?
Can be opened/locked manually.
Nice review Andrew, We now need more options in the EU and UK!
Can’t we use August Smart Lock in Europe?

How and where do you install the door sensor?
Does it unlock with Apple Watch

do they support the door sensor into homekit yet? it's been 2 years we are asking for the support

Hi if I have smart lock will it prevent someone with a master key from interning my apartment when I’m not home?
How frequently do you need to change the batteries?
Agree on the questions
every 2 months if you are using wifi. for me because i use the auto lock feature and i do not connect to wifi, this will last for 4 months

I just use August App, but yeah it's annoying that it doesn't work with Homekit. Everything else works great via iPad bridge except August lock.
Mine worked for like 5 minutes then now just tells me no response. Did you find a solution?
But you really didn't actually show entering and exiting your house from both the outside and inside. So I still really do not know how this works.
Could take this opportunity to make a new video

Is it true that it does not use wifi when used with Homekit ? :(

It pairs via BT to Homepod.
As i saw those batteries, i knew this would not work for me.
Can you also check how much to replace that kind of battery?
12 pack for $20 on Amazon

It doesn't change the outside lock? Yikes! 😳
The battery life sucks when using wifi. it lasts about 2 months when using wifi and about 4 months without wifi.

Both!
