Annabeth is probably the most resourceful and level-headded character in the book, but they completely chopped off all of her interesting traits and made her "strong generic female love interest girl" in the "movie" (Using the term movie very lightly)
She was also strong too and that coincides with being resourceful and level-headed? Why is general strength of character an issue to you for a female character? Especially when it's already accurate?

I wanted to die after what they did to Annabeth. The reason her character looked like a stereotypical valley girl was to highlight how enemies could easily underestimate her much like Athena. Athena, her Mom, was underestimated in the Greek times because of her femininity and yet she is one of the most bad ass Greek goddesses of all time. In the movie, they were trying to make Annabeth "bad ass" by making her look less stereo typically girly, while at the same time, making her really boring.
I've never read Percy jackson, I've only seen the movies, but I'm really into mythology and after I finished the first movie I was like "WHAT THE HELL HOW IS THAT GIRL THE DAUGHTER OF ATHENA WTF ATHENA IS THE MOST BADASS INTELLIGENT WISE DEITY IN THE OLYMPUS WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT GIRL THEY *MUST* HAVE MADE A MISTAKE SHE CAN'T BE ATHENA'S DAUGHTER" and now I guess I was on point😂
My opinion: JUST BECAUSE YOU GIVE A GIRL A SWORD THAT DOESN’T MAKE HER INTERESTING! That’s how most movies portray “powerful” female protagonists and it pisses me off. I’m a girl and I find that more offensive then not having female protagonists because then people are like, “Stop complaining, female protagonists are normal now.” And I’m like “NO! THERE NOT! IM NOT JUST GONNA SIT HERE AND ACCEPT THE BARE MINUM!” (Oof, sorry for this dumb rant.)
rick riordan : let’s write annabeth as an intelligent, useful, strong main character while still having subtle hints for her role as a love interest. screenplay writers : uh? pretty girl who percy likes. yes. perfect.
@hades child I disagree, it's only confusing when the characters change ccompletely like the sorts of Percy Jackson. Recently they casted a black woman to play Hamlet and idk if you had the opportunity to see it, it's truly TRULY remarkable how her character is portrayed, I'll go as far as saying it is the best possible casting. Sometimes the source material needs some updating and I'll welcome all diversity, as long as the core of the story remains the same.
@hades child YOU can't do that because YOU are a real person, characters in another hand get updated all the time. For instance, A Star Is Born just got its third or fourth adaptation to cinema, but we all can understand that, while it is an updated rendition, the core of the story remained the same. Broadway has revivals all the time and as long as they take time to establish the characters, how is that possibly going to get confusing? The new Enjolras from Les Mis is black, but everything about him screams young revolutionary so no one is confused at all! The problem with Percy Jackson in particular is that while they did insert some diversity with the casting of Grover, his entire personality was butchered!
@hades child you sound very young so I'll just say this: art, literature, cinema... All of those things are in constant mutation. The way we, in our time, view characters like Darth Vader or Gandalf will change inevitably because of our time, but while our interpretations may change, the core of those characters as they were written should stay the same, don't you agree? The color of their skin doesn't have to change anything about the characters essence! A good script writer will be able to translate the original work to screen and tthere's that. The problem with Percy Jackson, once again, is that the characters weren't adapted properly. Grover can be black, Percy could be Asian and Annabeth could be middle eastern, as long as their personalities align with the ones from the book, why should it be confusing? It's only confusing in Percy Jackson because Grover was supposed to be a sweet flower child whereas the films kind of made him look like a jerk-y womanizer.
@hades child Sorry if I made you angry, but you said you didn't know Les Mis, which to me indicates that you haven't had the opportunity to read it in high school yet. I think you missed my point entirely. I'm simply saying a race change in a character doesn't change its essence at all. We are simply having a conversation, let's be mature about it.
Harry Potter at least had the excuse of their being so many characters in the books that get development, but in Percy Jackson and the olympians there's like 5-6 main characters you have to develop. Percy, Annabeth, Grover (not as much as the first two), Tyson, Nico, and Luke.
As a twelve-year-old, I did not pay that much attention to clothes. So I don't think Percy would, either, unless it is very distinctive (like the Camp Half-Blood shirt). I definitely appreciate how difficult it made it for you, though. A single, young POV makes things difficult to adequately describe unless it is super important or distinctive.
I just remember in one of the promotional interviews with the actors, they were asked about the blue food and all the actors looked really confused. That was the moment I knew this was not gonna be a faithful adaptation.
Book Annabeth: Described as having tanned skin, stormy grey eyes and in a book scene where she is sitting with her siblings it's said "They all had athletic build and honey blond hair" Movie: Brown hair and green eyes, looks 20 years old
Multiple artist renditions in books and wikis: Grover is a wimpy, cinnamon roll, scrawny white kid Hollywood: did you mean a strapping, charismatic black dude?
In the movie, Annabeth seemed like a really snotty annoying person to me. In the books, she was someone I looked up to. And, I was also upset about what they did to her in the movies.
You know, I'm SO happy to see this comment, because my brother was (as still is) really into Percy Jackson books but I knew little about them, so when I watched this movie with my brother, I thought these were the actual characters, and I still haven't read Percy Jackson, but I am planning on it very soon because I am reading the Magnus Chase series at the moment, but I can just say I hated how they were portrayed in the movie and kind of made me not want to read the rest of the books, but now that I got descriptions of the actual characters, I am more than excited to read them!
the inaccuracies with annabeth in the movie pisses me off because it was so glaringly easy to make her blonde, i feel like they just didnt want to make a smart blonde character, it didnt even matter in the end because they made her absolutely useless in the movie, it just feels like they didn't want to make any of them interesting or complex like they were in the books, so the directors just fell on old tropes of, "useless woman," "cool badass protagonist," and "comic relief minority side character" for the main three
A some directors tend to make female characters helpless or kinda dumb even when the books they adapted it from clearly state they’re powerful girls/women. Its quite upsetting.
I've actually started to noticed that recently! Like the main girl of the group is always super smart and powerful, but always ends up being "bested" by the inexperienced, average joe, male lead, as soon as he enters her scene!
Kristen C. I've noticed this as well! However, it's typically because they're more focused on marketing and think an inferior, appealing girl love interest will bring in more money. Seeing how lav designed her though, she has such a great character design in this aspect!! The love interest role is becoming so dumb and overused, especially when they dumb down the girl just to have her there.
Guys do tend to like powerful male main characters more than girls, but I don't think anyone in this day and age would want some helpless girl to be the love of their life. And that's not a feminist thing, it's just a fact that people don't like being highly depended on and no one regardless of gender wants someone that incompetent. It's why you're seeing more and more rep for females, especially with the action scene now. Of course, you'll still have beefy masculine men leads but if you look at superhero movies right now, we're seeing more powerful and or smart women, better than the men in some cases, or at least more inspiring (Wonder Woman, Black Widow, to name the obvious. Don't wanna bore you with a list) Yeah they may not get their own movies or shows as much but that's basic business and brand awareness. Name the most iconic superheroes in the world and you'll name basically all men except Wonder Woman. If the characters sold well, they'll get a movie. That being said, if a strong character who just happens to be female is in something you're adapting, why would you make them weak because they just happen to be female? If this happened with male secondary characters it wouldn't be as bad, but these producers sincerely don't know who they're marketing to anymore. No one wanted to see this garbage movie so they couldn't make a third like they were setting up with Thalia. Thank god honestly, I don't want to see how they could've fucked up her, Nico and Bianca
You know what really annoys me about the movies? Annabeth's reaction to learning about Luke's betrayal. In the books Annabeth and Luke have been friends for ages, Annabeth looks up to him and has a crush on him... and yet, in the movie she just calmy comes to the conclusion that he betrayed them and has absolutely no reaction to finding this out. It really annoys me
and in later books she continues to like admire him and even deny it in some cases. She still like holds onto the fact that Luke was one of her favorite people even when he kidnapped her and tried to kill her. She still denied that he was fully bad and it like actually hurts her that he turned out the way he did.
i find it interesting how they had no problem casting a black actor when they needed pop culture references, one liners, and comedic relief but, when they need the female love interest, the description of “tan skin” is nonexistent.

Just saying, but percy describes her when she's 12 and even then he saw she was intense. Leo sees her when she's 16 which is after she's been on a few quests, fought in a war, had to go through the whole luke thing, and had her boyfriend kidnapped. She grew into her scary appearance.

Ana não faria I agree grover is fibe no matter hiw he looks just as long as it matches his (book) personality.

Because they feel like love interest or damsels gives off that classic princess feel. When the main is a Male hero.
@@NothingGoodHere1001 welcome to sexism my dude
It really annoys me
OMG FR THO 💀
Like I expected her to be like "NO LUKE HOW COULD YOU"
instead she was like "Oh yeah I knew that."
"Family Luke, you promised" SOBBING
and in later books she continues to like admire him and even deny it in some cases. She still like holds onto the fact that Luke was one of her favorite people even when he kidnapped her and tried to kill her. She still denied that he was fully bad and it like actually hurts her that he turned out the way he did.
She should read/watch the second book/movie and fix Luke, Tyson and Clarisse
Very off topic and I havent finished the books but Tyson better than Grover. Why the fuck am I sharing this? I dont know
i find it interesting how they had no problem casting a black actor when they needed pop culture references, one liners, and comedic relief but, when they need the female love interest, the description of “tan skin” is nonexistent.

harry potter fans: they ruined ginny!
percy jackson fans: hold my ambrosia
But I’m in all three fandoms!! And I’m mad about all three!! But tbh Annabeth is definitely portrayed the worst of the three

@@frogbysachs7559 their Annabeth was honestly so sexist.
And harry potter fans complain that ginny was runied cuz of her personality.
Try reading the Cirque Du Freak books and then watching the movie... travesty... this movie adaptation is golden by comparison.
I am so impressed. You’re really good at drawing, you pay attention to detail, and you’re doing us all a huge fan service.

ARAMIS NOEL-HEMMING yes

Just saying, but percy describes her when she's 12 and even then he saw she was intense. Leo sees her when she's 16 which is after she's been on a few quests, fought in a war, had to go through the whole luke thing, and had her boyfriend kidnapped. She grew into her scary appearance.
Movie adaptations really annoy me.
If your going to make a movie version of a very beloved book.
Do. It. Right.
Preach.
At this point, movie adaptations that do it right are as rare as diamonds.

No, Rick didn’t ask and they didn’t ask Rick.
@@emily-uo1et Theres a whole video of Rick being interviewed about this. They came to him, said they wanted to make a movie. He asked if he could have any say in how the movie would be done. They laughed at him and said no. But Rick still went for it because he thought it was the best way to get his book noticed, and it worked.
