WOW! That puts the $50 Dob I found to shame! I know what you mean about being out in the open with the equipment - I have to observe from the driveway so anytime I have to go inside, I have to drag everything back into the workshop and close the door.

Well, no, each telescope serves a different purpose for those like the ultra high expensive models. This one is for them. The people that are more in the budget friendly will consider a cheaper option.

Saturn is out now but the rings are going away and Jupiter is out in the morning. Good targets for that new scope!

Awesome scope! I got a TSA 120 and a sky 90 but for visual, I love my FS 102 with fluorite, its produces and awesome crisp detailed image and like you said, quick cool down times so with quick temperature changes it handles conditions well.

It was a good find it was a fluke, but however, after the 128, now this 102, and then you’ll see next week that happened all within one month time I’m broke now lol

      @@JoeJaguar I can believe that.

As for the date of manufacture I do not profess to know how to read those serial numbers but I just recently got me a FS 102 so I did some research and found on the forum where they said that the year of manufacture is the first two numbers not the last. Like I said I only know what was stated on Cloudy nights. Mine seems to be made in 2004. It looks like yours is from 1999. Oh how I miss the 20th century!

You know what I read that same article on cloudy nights where somebody deciphered the code, but it also says that Takahashi had changed the code so normal people can’t guess which run and date came from. I can’t recall when they changed it to the new system that has letters and numbers.

Eh Joe, let me join to one of those tests!! also.. I can use a bit of fluke!
I'm curious about how well Tak's compare to SCTs for planetary action. Any insights? i.e. compare this to a 6se or 8se?

No problem well if you live close to the Toronto area and it’s a clear night pass by sure no problem
      Well, I’ve owned the 8 & 6se
Normally, I guess I will explain it is that the refractor normally has a cleaner more contrast on with a better image quality than a like a SCT
I really like the cities for its portability and power, but I have switched long ago to a refractor when I want to look at the best detail in the planets
Something like the sky watcher, evil star or similar, will give you very good views but the higher quality name brands just go past its theoretical limit sometimes much more than 50 times per inch of aperture
I have gone at least to 75 or 80X per inch of aperture when you’re talking about the best name brands like this
In the forms in the past people have told me you can go up to 100 times per inch of power
Also, normally these refractors if you’re made really well, you’ll see a lot more the finer details
Wear a large or Scope will show may be more overall larger detail, but they can’t show the little tiny intricate detail. That’s where these refractors come in handy.
But for serious planetary viewing, I think the 5 to 6 inch is where it’s at sometimes the 4 inch will give you a great view, but sometimes you just need a little bit more aperture
