That's no turboprop Paul, those fantastic little Islanders are piston powered . The domestic smoke detector on the instrument panel was an interesting addition. There's something so British about going all that way and having a cup of tea and a piece of cake in the village hall!
Tea in village halls is the best. The carbon monoxide detector is required to be installed by January 2025 on small aircraft in the UK. You will see it more often.
I'm a driving instructor in edinburgh and I have a couple of Pupils from Shetland, one from Fair Isle and the other from one of the other islands. Here's an interesting fact for you, on the outlying islands a learner driver is allowed to drive unaccompanied and the vehicle doesn't have to have an MOT.
It’s ironic actually seeing the island as I used to be a crew member onboard the mv Hjaltland, a Northlink Ferry which goes from Aberdeen to Lerwick in Shetland. I was the night barman and usually in the early hours, just as the summer sun comes up, we would pass the Fair Isle, that would mark the point when I would have a break and pour myself an espresso. I used to love watching the sea birds flying around the islands cliffs, ironically we would also get mobile phone reception coming from the island which would result in my mobile phone buzzing with multiple notifications and messages! Always wandered what it must be like to live in such a small remote island, so exposed to storms..
I love this kind of stuff ! (Subscribed) Your departure lounge looks 1st class 🤣🤣 At 7:51 Aviation geeks (like myself) will be looking at the runway numbers and nodding their heads to see a 02 Respect to the War Graves from a RAF family 💙 The internet needs so much more of this kind of content. Love the sound of the Islander! i remember it from flying on them between Guernsey and Jersey! Once Mom got to sit next to the pilot. He offered her a cigarette and they both puffed away during the flight! Glad that part has changed! Amazing scenery !
Certainly an unusual expereience - real flying in a tiny plane, wonderful views, peace and solitude on the island. You can't beat some village hall tea and cake. Great video.
Thanks, Paul for this absolutely beautiful video of an "enchanted island". I kept thinking of how peaceful this island is and what a perfect "escape" it is to get away from our hectic world. It certainly must take a rugged individual to live there year round. The winter months must be quite challenging.
Great video mate, really enjoyed this one! Also other people have pointed this out, but the Britain Norman BN-2 Islander is definitely not a turboprop powered aircraft. She is equipped with 2 Teledyne Continental O-540 piston driven engines. Other than that, I really did enjoy the video and I hope to fly to this “Most Remote island” someday in my travels when I visit the UK! 🇬🇧 Cheers mate 🥂 -Caleb’s Aviation 😎
I just love your posts but this one is beyond delightful! I did love how there was a little placard with the phonetic spelling of the plane registration...just in case someone forgets it during a moment of excitement LOL!
Been watching your videos for years from the early days. Still making great videos much better than in the beginning 😂. Keep up the good work and see you around
A really interesting video Paul. I spent a week on Shetland in 2022 really enjoyed myself. Trying to sleep when it never seemed to get dark was a challenge but luckily I had kept my eye mask that i was given on the ferry.
I've also had the pleasure of visiting this place and the people are indeed friendly and warm. You have to be somewhat lucky to make a daytrip as the flights are regulary on weatherhold as you briefly noticed :)
One of my favourites of all your videos Paul. Such an amazing day. Sad to see the air ambulance though. A quick google of SCAA and Fair Isle showed me - if it was the day you went - why they were there, plus some photos from their day.
That is very beautiful. You are quite fortunate to be able to visit such a lovely place. I think I could live quite happily there. Just need a roof over my head, wood for a fire and I would be content. It will never be, but I can live some of my dreams through vids like yours. Thanks
What I like about your videos is that most the everyday person can do. Not always first class travel, which is not achievable for everyone. Love the off the beaten track trips, and the sleeper trains too!
I work for Loganair and had the privilege of taking one of our Islanders up from Kirkwall to Fair Isle back in 2018. It was a quiet day with empty seats and I took a "familiarisation" flight at no cost. So my wife (who did have to pay) and I went up and spent all of 10 minutes on the island. And it was enormous fun even though we didn't actually really visit or see anything of Fair Isle apart from aerial views.
Looks like a lovely place and an interesting video. As a pilot myself, I am not sure that I would want to have an engine failure coming out of Tingwall. Those wind turbines don't look like a very forgiving area to land amongst!
Great video, love flying in the islanders. If you haven’t already you should do a day trip from Oban on Hebridean airways also part of air task. Book a flight to conlonsay for £38 and back on the ferry three hours larer for £15
Ok this is weird... I have been a subscriber to this channel for years now, but recently we had a new employee start at my workplace. We work together, and he just happens to be Paul's doppelganger. Twin brothers from another mother Lol 😁👍 Only difference is my co-worker is Ukrainian, no British accent. I will forever think of Wingin' It now everytime I get to work in the morning, ha ha!
I know exactly 2 people who live on Fair Isle - I was wondering if either might show up in the background, but alas, I didn't see them. I loved seeing St. Ninian's tombolo from the air - I once walked there from the main road. Thanks for posting!
Glad you got to cross that one off your bucket list Paul! I went to Shetland for the first time back in July and had a great time but didn't make it off the main island.
I had to be weighed when I flew from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon on a small(ish) aircraft. Thank goodness the scale numbers were only seen by the counter staff, lol. However, your plane was quite a bit smaller than the one I flew on. I quite enjoy the flights on those small aircraft though, they fly low enough top provide great views. Another wonderful video Paul.
Places without trees are unsettling. When one goes to these islands, those islands, outcrops or up in the mountains, something doesn't click for an inland, slightly-above-sea-level-dweller.
Paul I have spent a week on the Shetlands I enjoyed it a lot as you felt you were not in the uk and after we departed Lerwick on the ferry we then spent 5 days on the Orkneys and it was one of the best holidays ever.
I hope you never referred to ‘the Shetlands’ or ‘the Orkneys’ when you were there. You would have been in trouble; they are Shetland and Orkney. You are allowed to say the Shetland islands, though.
Single pilot flying a twin piston aircraft (defo piston as you can see the “mixture” levers in the throttle quadrant) is a serious workload and I bet very tough when the weather comes in. That said I doubt they have ILS at either end of the trip. RNAV in weather or are they only VFR flights? Anyone know?
It looks a bit to snug onboard on that Islander for me, I think I'd prefer the cruise ship option. The packed lunch was ok but a brew up and some of Mr Kipling's finest would have been better. The flight, unfortunately would have negated the transport of a gas/petrol stove but I guess you could have found some kind islander to fill up a thermos of boiling water for you.

😂 8:04 if that’s a turboprop, it needs oil or a propeller is very imbalanced 🛫👍
@@Oduck22 Howard Scott in his comment above is spot on - the Islander is a piston-engined aircraft...
I was gonna say the same that’s a piston engined plane
@@Calebs_Aviation The average person doesn't know turbine (turbo) vs piston. Let them say "turbo-prop". It makes the story more dramatic ;)

@@Paul_Lucas Nice Vid Man?
That price seems miniscule for such an adventure. For many, once in a lifetime. Great video.
Thanks so much - and yes, a wonderful day :-)
Love all your videos, but this one was very special.
You have managed to capture the beauty and tranquility of this island really well here. One of your best. Many thanks!!!
Such a charming place. As a lover and collector of postcards, the puffin would be a delightful addition to my collection. I know your niece loved it.
What a fantastic video, Paul - one of your very best! You did well with the weather too.

Listening to the pilot speak was so lovely. The accent was like singing to my ears. Love it!

As Houston Dynamo Fan, I love the Dynamo shirt! And a great video, as always, of course!
I love it when prop engines harmonize when throttled up. 👍
Excellent video paul...best one you have made..thank you..
Yet another immaculately researched, engaging trip report! Thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you Zac! I appreciate it :)))
This could be one of your best videos ever. 👍
Loved the scenery and most especially love that puffin postcard for your niece! Cutest!
What a cool experience. I have to say though, the Islander isn't a turboprop. Pure piston power
There are turboprop variants of the BN2, but yeah, G-SICB, a BN2B-20 has piston engines
Loved it Paul. Thanks 😊😊
Great video.
The lengthy production-run of the Islander is a tribute to the design team.
Liked the infinity-runway.
Hugely enjoyed your video, Paul - Fair Isle has always been a special destination on my 'bucket list' and hopefully I'll get there one day! 🙏🙏🙏

Wow. If I could snap my fingers and change life and career, being a pilot on a flight like this would be it
Great job, Paul. Thanks!

We haven’t been to Fair Isle yet but we took the Northlink to Shetland last year. Went up to Unst and Yell. Had a wonderful holiday.
I visited the Shetland archipelago once, left a piece of my heart there.
Just love this
Interesting visit to remote Fair Isle. Thanks Paul.😀👍👌
An Islander and a Chipmunk! Too cool! (And BTW, the Islander isnt a Turboprop - it has twin 540 cu In Piston engines...)
Astonishing views on the Shetland Archipelago. Thank you for bringing us along.

Beats the hell out of those 1st and business class trips
6:25 Chipmunk!!! I learned to fly in one of those ❤

Interesting to see a DE Havilland Chipmunk parked on the ramp There are many of them in the US but I flew one several years ago, sweet little bird.
Beautiful scenery.
Man! I've never been in a plane that small! Watching from. USA.
Fabulous views , really exciting way to travel to the most northern part of Great Britain.

Superb watch, thanks!
Fantastic video Paul!
Don't know how I would feel getting on a plane with just one pilot!
Oh come that double's the chance you might get to have a go at it yourself, where's your sence of adventure 😂😂

Great video. Lovely stuff. Don't know what the frame in the left hand windscreen is but it looks like someone left a wheelie case on the bonnet. :))
Yes good choice of sandwich chicken and bacon, with Kit-kat
Absolutely stunning ❤ A dream destination ❤
Very spectacular!
I love that there's a contest to see who can go to the most remote island in the Shetlands. To me, they're all insanely remote!!!

Prop Paul!! 🛩
Dunno why, but I've always fancied a trip to the most northern point of Shetland, maybe one day
Yup, Bald & Bankrupt, Backpacker Ben, Steve Marsh & others.. they all love the isle.
Cheers from sunny Florida.
Good stuff 👍
Wonderful trip Paul. I’ve always dreamt of visiting Orkney/Shetland.
Flew to the Scilly Isles from St Just Airport, I remember how small the interior of the aircraft was, but a real adventure all the same

@ thanks so much Duncan! Safe flying.
Trips like this beat those about premium cabins.
Nice Houston Dynamo shirt. Did you get that visiting here in H-Town?
Turboprop? It sounded more like piston engines.
They were. He got it wrong.

Not a turbo-prop Paul. Piston engines.
I love videos set on remote islands and I’m sorry but I have no better way to describe it other than ‘quaint’ (non-derogatory).
Are the audio connections possibly for training flights?
You should research a quote by Mick Jagger on the NZ town of Invercargill and fly there.
Would make for a very interesting video.
But wait, it's not raining! Must be AI generated LOL
Great trip buddy.
you are not on a turboprop but a piston powered
Hey Paul, nice vid but I have a burning question - the scene where you are eating lunch on a rock, how dud you perform the auto pan?
It’s a 360 degree camera! You can pan in the edit with these things.
