    Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that “missing timing” is a stupid mechanic in Yu-Gi-Oh? It makes some cards useless in certain conditions that would otherwise make them good, and literally every other mainstream card game doesn’t have anything like that.

    • @tonberryking42
      @tonberryking42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      I don't think the concept of it is stupid at all. I love the idea of it. But sometimes, it's on cards for no good reason.
      What makes it a fun concept is that can make for some fun interactions with the opponent, making them either allow the effect, it spend another card(s) or effect(s) to make sure you miss the timing.
      Falco just doesn't function, so it's a bad place for it. Traptrix Dionaea is another example - yes, resetting a Trap Hole is strong, BUT it automatically banishes the trap at the end phase of the next turn, AND you still can't activate it the same turn it was set.
      Quasar missing the timing to summon Shooting Star is a good place for it, since it takes work to deal with an Omni negate on legs, the opponent should work to keep you from getting a 3300 destruction negate that can attack up to a potential 5 times.

      @dicksonmattxenoblade6491 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      You could argue that on the right cards it could help to balance them. On the wrong ones, it makes cards that should be good bad because of it. In the latter case, yes I agree

    • @masterpeace1647
      @masterpeace1647 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It is an indirect way to nerf a card. Remember that Yang Zhing has a monster on the ban list simply because he doesn't miss timing. Many cards would be too strong without timing

    • @jdrmanmusiqking
      @jdrmanmusiqking 4 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      @Solanne
      These dudes are crazy. Using semantics to balance a card instead of using game mechanics or simply not making busted effects is pure idiocy. Missing timing shouldn't exist. If an effect has fulfilled it activation requirements, other card effects/proper game mechanics not semantics should be the only thing that stops it. Unnecessary headache is unnecessary

    • @nonenone4560
      @nonenone4560 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@danielmflores Like he said, it's the other way around. The anime/manga came first, where it was just a fictional card game and the author didn't have to worry about whether it actually work in real life. It wasn't until about halfway through the manga run of Duelist Kingdom that they attempted to adapt it into an actual game (and if you don't know, the first few Japanese sets didn't have effect monsters and only had a small handful of magic/trap cards, so the rules were VERY primitive). When Duelist Kingdom was ending, the author worked with Konami to hammer out the rules so the card game would work better and the manga could match the new real-life card game more closely.
      So it's not that the characters in duelist kingdom weren't following the TCG rules, it's that the TCG rules just didn't exist. Even in later series, the anime would be written first then the card game would have to try to figure out how the hell to adapt the cards.

    I think a way to "fix" Wall shadow and REDMG would be to a) Make them float back into their original monsters when removed from the field and b) give them better effects.
    Maybe let REDMG keep Metalmorphs effect and give it 3k attack. And let Wall Shadow attack directly while in defense position Submarineroid style.

That happened a lot for the first seasons of the show, since the rules were still undefined (like how in the anime both Thousand Year Dragon and Dark Sage are summoned when Time Wizards effect is succesful, but in the card game the first one is a Fusion and the second one an effect monster that emulated the show).

    In defense of Rainbow Gravity, it actually has uses in Duel Links, of all places.
    Jesse, the user of Crystal Beasts, has a skill to discard 1-2 cards to place 1-2 Crystal Beast monsters in your spell/trap zone. This gave you instant access to cards like Rare Value and Crystal Raikeki.
    What this did was make a reliable draw engine to cycle through the 20 card deck as fast as possible, and since you only ran 1 Rainbow Dragon, Rainbow Gravity was used to get Rainbow Dragon back on the field.
    This skill, Translucent Crystals, can be used once per turn and twice per duel. Making the Rainbow Dragon strategy fairly consistent, even if it wasn't that strong.

It is literally the worst "mechanic" in all of Yu-Gi-Oh, and I put mechanic in quotes, because I'm fairly sure it only works the way it does because players rule sharked it until it was made an official ruling, as I don't remember my 2.0 rulebook(Fairly sure it was 2.0, Starter Deck Joey's rule book, what ever version that one was.) talking about it. (From some brief googleing it seems it wasn't a thing until 2009 so that adds even more to my point of it was likely just a rule made by Upperdeck after someone started rule sharking because there wasn't a rule to stop them.)
    Hell I hadn't even heard of it until I played Legacy of the Duelist and was playing a jank Des frog deck, had a Dupe Frog on the field, tribute summon said Dupe Frog for a Des Frog, and then that dreaded message poped up, saying that I had missed the timing and I had to look up what it meant. I was honestly quite frustrated because given the time period of when 90% of Frogs were added to the game, there were only 2 mechanics to get Dupe frog off the field without using a field destroying effect like Dark Hole, tribute summon and fusion summon, both of these things cause it to "miss timing" meaning Konami printed a card that literally could not use it's effect at the time of it's release, and even other frogs like Swap Frog can't make it use it's effect, because Swap frog would tribute Dupe Frog>Use Swap Frogs effect to special summon from the deck>Dupe tries to activate it's effect and misses timing
    It really does feel like players trying to rule shark on the wording and it should have never been a thing. Even more so when you consider just reading the cards the effect reads the same way for "If" and "When" effects, it's "IF a card does x YOU CAN do y" or "When a card does x YOU CAN do y" they are both optional, you don't HAVE to activate a "When" effect and often on older cards it seems like they just used what ever one fit the sentence of the effect better.
    The best argument for why missed timing should even be a thing is that some cards would be broken without it, well then that's on Konami to errata the cards, and FIX THE CARDS. Not break hundreds of cards and prevent them from working as they clearly intended them to work, simply to balance a small handful of cards.
    Like the example listed is Lightpulsar Dragon and Red Eye's Darkness Metal Dragon creating an infinite loop because you can link the two of them off, then use Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon's effect to special summon Lightpulsar Dragon back, and it can brink Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon back, and there is an easy fix to this to stop it from being an infinite loop, make Lightpulsar Dragon's effect a hard once per turn effect, or just have Lightpulsar Dragon banish itself to summon the monster from the grave. Though if I remember right the OCG fixed this loop by just making Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon's special summon another dragon effect a hard once per turn. Would it still be a powerful effect? Sure, it would be a 2 card rank 4, but there are already a lot of 1 card rank 4s in the game. And this 2 card combo takes at least 3 other cards to work, given you need to banish a light and dark to summon Lightpulsar Dragon, and you need to send any dragon to the grave to summon Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, plus you still need to link climb. So optimally you send a light or dark dragon to the grave to summon Red Eyes, then banish it and another dragon already sent there earlier to summon Lightpulsar Dragon, then you summon your link 2 of choice, then bring both back, then make your link 4.
    Geeze this got long, sorry about that, TLDR: Missing the timing is an outdated mechanic that only serves to prevent cards from working as they were clearly intended, and the only arguments for why it needs to still be a thing are weak as fuck.

You can even still kind of do that now a days as well, it's just harder to do. And given that Hydrogeddon can summon copies of it's self if it kills something, you can get at least two on field generally (GX/5Ds) and then use a spell or monster to search Oxygeddon if you didn't start with it. Convoluted? Yes. Worth it? Majority of cases, no. Ridiculous? Not really, just convoluted.

    Give Wall Shadow an effect that redirects attacks to Labyrinth Wall. And also give it some form of destruction power or make it a threath.
    Either make it able to attack directly, or make it so that once per turn it can destroy 1 card on the opponent's side of the field. (Or give it both effects, but only 1 can be activated)
    If labyrinth wall is destroyed, destroy the wall shadows.

    •It requires two specific high Level monsters to be destroyed at the same time; even though this can be done by another card that has a effect to specifically destroy them both, it itself requires being removed from the field.
    •Requires you to pay Life Points to Special Summon it, albeit only 500 Life Points.
    •Does not have the damage inflicting effects of either of its summon materials.
    •Has a "when" effect that once it is Special Summoned you can pay even more Life Points to increase its ATK, but only until the End Phase: again though, only 500 Life Points.
    •Its summoning condition is a "when" effect and as such can miss timing, e.g. if the destruction occurred as part of a Chain.

What if you didn’t know if any copies of Dark Sage were still in your deck? For example, if you banished cards from the top of the deck face down, wouldn’t it be possible that when searching for a copy of Dark Sage in your deck, you might find none and have then performed a free search and possibly a shuffle of your deck? Gusto Falco reminds me how much I don't like the idea that card effects can miss timing, it is really confusing when other good cards don't have this issue.

    • @Zanryu1337
      @Zanryu1337 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, as a Magic player I never understand the timing issue as Magic is written very clear cut with a lot of nomenclature which YGO doesn't have, which is kinda surprising.

    I have used a gusto deck and I feel like Gusto Falco was originally meant to be used after synchro summoning, but due to poor wording, ruined its potential. It could have been broken if gusto cards in general were better.

    Wall Shadow mayyyy have worked at one time if it did not require the sacrifice of Magical Labyrinth, and Labyrinth had an effect of all attacks directed at Wall Shadow were re-directed to Labyrinth. To add balance, they could add like 3-4 shadow tokens that are the counters to how many hits Labyrinth could take on Shadow's behalf. But hey, that ship has sailed almost decades ago.

    why isn't dark sage's effect if the coin toss fails? like the anime.

      @@ddmacc because, if the opponent does it to you. and is right it should active.

    Wall Shadow is a quite early card that was meant to be played alongside Labyrinth of Nightmare, a continous trap that, during the end phase of each player, the current player has to change the battle position of each face up monster they control. This way you have an extra attack over Labyrinth Wall while still being able to defend. At that time players didn't had the plethora of backrow clearing and card removal we do have today, Still, Magical Labyrinth was awful. If you did draw Wall Shadow, you were unable to special summon it, since it allows you to do so only from the deck

    Fun fact about Crop Circles: Its almost impossible to legally take the burn damage. This is because in order to activate the card you have to have a valid card remaining in your deck you could search with the levels available to you. This means that the only way to take the burn damage legally is for you to activate it and then another card is chained to it that removes all legal targets of that level from your deck.
    It also means that in a tournament if you activate it and dont actually find a card you could search with the levels you used, youve made an illegal play and instead of taking the burn damage will lose the game.

    Ok how does missing the timing work if there is no "you can" in the effect? Does the "you can" need to be there for the effect to miss the timing? Or does simply having a "when" in there make it miss timing regardless of whether or not the effect is optional?

    • @Gamba723
      @Gamba723 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      „If“ effect do *not* miss timing. „when“ effects could possibly miss timing because the „when“ stands for a certain time, in gusto falcos case right after being sent to the graveyard, but right after gusto is sent to the GY a monster is summoned and therefore the requirement for his effect is not fullfilled. If there was in „if“ the only requirement is that it is sent to the GY which meand it does not matter how many effects are in between

    i feel it's worth mentioning that the intended way of summoning the familiar possessed cards is more likely by sacrificing the charmer and their respective familiar, in hiita's case inari fire, who can all special summon themselves from the hand if you have a spellcaster on the field
    this doesn't make them good cards, but that fact won't stop them from being my favourite cards, i think they're cool concept, and i find their gimmick fun (no matter how terrible it'll ever be)

    @TheDuelLogs --So, one monster I think that should have been included in this list is Test Ape, where it's effect is similar to UFOroid where it can SS a Glad Beast that, instead of being 1500 atk or less, it's a lvl 4 or lower from the deck, but also does not include the effect that make Test Tiger and Test Panther so awesome, which is the part that the Glad Beast SS by the effect of the Test monster is treated as if were SS by another Glad Beast. If it had that effect, I'm pretty sure a lot of Glad Beast players would incorporate it into their decks, but without it, it's about as useful anymore as the field spell or any of the original equip spells.
    Speaking of Glad Beasts, could you PLEASE do a top 10 WORST Glad Beasts. I think it would be awesome.
    Thank you.
