You would have won if those freakin' starting elastic bands had worked properly. Not enough tension on them. So love your YZ 465! Don't think it got out of 3rd gear...I owned a 1981 Suzuki RM465 MX back around '84 in Invercargill. Bike was originally raced by a senior named Neil Boniface who enjoyed a lot of success on it. A mate of mine bought it and then we agreed to swap my 1979 Honda XR500 enduro for it. I wanted to see how much top speed I could obtain as I like off-road-fire-riding long gravel roads so I tall geared it, either 1-2 tooth front sprocket increase and possibly a rear sprocket 1-3 tooth decrease - I can't remember the ratio it equaled as I'm not hot on math. I fitted a Boyesen power reed between the carb & inlet manifold to smooth out the wicked power band and it worked perfectly. I ran expensive Bel-Ray 2 stroke pre-mix oil with fuel, fitted an NGK spark plug and hi ho silver hit the gravel up Borland Lodge way near Manapouri in the South Island. About 10-15km of gravel road. Unfortunately the bike never had a speedometer so I couldn't measure speed. However as I'd previously owned a '76 Yamaha DT250B, '78 Honda XR250, '77 Yamaha TT500, 1981 Yamaha IT175J, & 1979 Honda XR500 and done quite a lot of trail riding/enduros I had a fair idea how fast I was going. I even had a pillion passenger on the back of the RM465 who was quite lightweight and wow the extra weight on the rear wheel/tire increased traction perfectly on the gravel road and I reckon it increased speed! That RM465 absolutely flew over those long gravel roads in top 5th gear. I was still able to control-power-slide out of the tighter corners. It remains the most exciting motorcycle I have owned in all the 10 owned from 1981-1990. Awesome riding dude, I have a 465 and know how they go. You went from last to almost first Love that grass track, what these old bikes were made for. They are not like the supercross bikes of today, old two strokes rule. These young people couldn't handle the two strokes from the 80's.
I let a younger guy kid about 20 ride my 87 CR 125 and he was like wow it's got a turbo boost on it. All he's ever had is newer 4 strokes and was amazed at how quick my bike is
When we were kids my friends Todd's dad Larry used to take us dirt bike riding we had 80s he had two blue Yamaha two-stroke 4 25 its two-stroke single piston those were perfect bikes shoot a big rooster tail of dirt every gear
I had one of these. Three compression is ridiculous. The power is unlimited. U can go up the steepest hill in 5th gear wide open. You barely twist your hand and your away top speed before u can blink.
WONDERFUL!!! Rubberband start and a grasstrack! Great riding, you were on it in the corners! If ever you need a bike to hunt down and catch the pack, the 465 will do it. Got one myself!

Funny... I was thinking "how do they start without getting hung up on that starting line?" And then you got hung up on it. Haha. Always wanted a 465 looking for one right now for a good price. I had an 86 yz490 and I hated it, very fast, but the vibration was intolerable, and it was impossible to keep tuned well (it would rattle the screws on the carburetor loose, ridiculous), it was hard to start, and having only 4 gears is dumb. Everything I've ever read was that the 465 was the pinnacle of big Yamahas, and they ruined it when they made it into a 490... I can vouch for the 490 being terrible, but I've never had the chance to ride a 465. Hopefully it's true that the 465 is way better and I don't score one and dislike it as much as I disliked my 490.

Not only do they tare ass ,but that symphonic two stroke sound , the idle ''Ping'' well...…..its majestic, the sensation...…….like riding an unbroke mustang on crack...…..nice vid..... I had two a Marty replica that I had to sell, broke my heart close on 3 years labour to restore (wolves were barking at the door) and the one in my profile that I am hanging onto with both hands, thats kinda standard when you ride them to :)

@@deborahchesser7375 yep I milled an 8 mm wide band around the outer edge of the head, also I milled an 8mm tall, 14mm wide hole (slot), 10mm below the bottom ring on the carburetor side of the piston, and then removed approximately 3/4 of an inch of the exhaust pipe, in the "ell", these are "MODS" the pro's did to gain power and reliability 😉, if I had to list all I did to the engine, I'd have a book written out here. 😎
We rode smart we tried to not jump in the air luckily never got hurt barely even crashed fell over a couple times no big deal in the sand you know front wheel digs in
