The two strokes had no engine braking, and in the back of your mind you always expected it to seize.. two strokes were much cheaper to maintain, and easier to work on. My TZ 250 require new pistons every 200 miles, and a new crankshaft every 600 miles..I like the two strokes

    There's nothing more orgasmic than when a 2stroke with well tuned expansion chamber exhaust comes into it's power band. It's like that THX demo you hear at the movies when all the sound frequencies come into alignment to make the perfect chord. At about 6K rpm a 2stroke does the same thing and launches you inot hyperspace. SOOOOO damn fun.

    As an ex 400 cc production racer in So. Calif in the early 80s I eventually became a proud owner of a TZR-250 later in 1992. Living in LA I had the title of being the top rider from the rock store to the view point at Mulholland Drive in my ex RD-400 cc Yamaha. A decade later I recaptured my title on my tiny TZR-250. This TZR was like riding a 17 lb bicycle with 100 horse power, even though my TZ R was putting out 65 hp. This thing was crazy fast going into,and out of turns. I used to laugh so loud inside my helmet as I used to leave everyone in the dust on the way to the view point finish, even though they had stripped down Suzuki 750s specifically for this Mulholland ride with well over 100 hp.

    Great video! The huge jumps in power with early to later models of most of these bikes is due to the introduction of power valve systems (e.g. Yamaha's YPVS, Kawasaki's KIPS, etc.) - Yamaha's YPVS was the first to be successfully used in racing and gave Kenny Roberts his first World Championship.

      It´s cumbersome, but a variable-length exaust-pipe before the resonance-chamber does the same, just better and cheaper (instead of varying the exhaust-port-timing with the powervalve, it matches the exhaust-pipe-length ot the transient load- and rpm-situation). But I guess, variable-exhaust-length is something for single-cylinders, where there´s enough room in the engine bay left.

    Man I remember my 74 RD350 that Dennis Latimer built a custom set of expansion chambers for it. Installed a Barnett Clutch and a set of Wiseco Pistons. It had a hard time keeping the front tire on the ground. It wanted to ride on one wheel every gear. I blew away 750's and 1000cc bikes in the first 200 feet all day long. It was so quick. I could keep up with the Yamaha XS1100 specials and the Z1R's. Crazy Larry did some mods before I wrecked it and I have to say.. it was one of the most fun bikes I've ever ridden.

    2 stroke is incredible,less part,lightweight,big power(compared with same cubic with 4stroke)
    but hard to control,i remember riding 125cc 2 stroke,hard to control the power....high wear part,like piston,crank,cyl block....hi cost of part(high wear+precision part) & maintenance.......

      but if my 4stroke get engine damage,i can easily change the part from other bike,like Piston example,my 4 stroke just buy some piston,make the crown,valve dish,skirt model same as before......aanddd my bike running smoothly.....
      but the 2 stroke need more specific part,because the piston have so many specification,like skirt for intake/exhaust port,some bike get a code like A,B,C,D cyl block,its the code for clearance.....daammnnn if that bike doesn't have so many stories & memories,i'll bury it for sure

    From 1982 to 1985 Fast Freddy Spencer won 27 grand prix races while riding Honda's NS500, NSR500 and NSR250. During the 1985 season, Freddy was the only rider in history to have won both the 250cc and 500cc championships in the same Grand Prix season.
    As Freddy was already racing abroad in Europe, when my racing career began here in the AMA, 1984 was the only time I would share the track with Freddy and Kenny Roberts when both had entered the AMA National event at Laguna Seca. Freddy crashed hard under braking while entering the Cork Screw, ending his weekend. Kenny won leg one of the F1 race while Randy Mamola won the second leg and the overall F1 win. Fred Merkle won the superbike race w/ Wes Cooley finishing 2nd.

      The 2 stroke is more efficient because it burns fuel and makes use of the power more efficiently than a four stroke thus making it a more efficient engine. However the 4 stroke gets better gas mileage making it a more MPG efficient engine. When people think of engine efficiencies, they instantly think of gas mileage which isnt the same thing.

    • @farangtikitungmuang
      @farangtikitungmuang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Retroman theoretically more efficient. Practically speaking the two stroke does not extract as much power per given power stroke because the fuel isn't completely burned. The compensatory factor is that 2 strokes have more (but weaker) power strokes.

    • @justcarcrazy
      @justcarcrazy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No. Instead I'll rely on years of research (not all my own) and experience. How do you define efficiency? Engineers define efficiency as the ratio of work extracted relative to energy invested. In that respect the 2-stroke is always less efficient than a 4-stroke.

    I have an RZ500 Yamaha. Before this, I rode a 500 Gamma Suzuki and it was shocking, its high rate of acceleration. At the time my main ride was a Suzuki GSXR-750 that had been modified by removing all the smog equipment (this was in California), and re-jetting the carbs, and installation of a better-breathing Yoshimura exhaust system.
    The RG-500 Gamma just blew away the GSXR.
    Later I owned a 'stage II tuned' Yamaha RD400 Daytona. That little bike would pull your arms out of the socket. You needed to be holding on to the handlebars very securely or the dang thing would accelerate out from under you.

      Your statement does makes some sense at least at high states of tune, but please note that for a long time (decades) 90% of dirt riders were on TWO strokes. The demise of 2 strokes was almost entirely EPA fuled if you ask me ....the newer requirements EPA specs and popular sensibilities toward the environment ...manufactures did not want to have to make all those extra parts that go into the four strokes that replaced the two strokes but they HAD TO ....in the dirt 4 stroke was actually easier to ride fast so they all got on the bandwagon when 4 bangers started winning like hell ....but in F1 grand prix racing? Pros riding 2 stroke bikes could STILL dominate via more power same weight

    I went to the Dutch 500 GP at Assen in 1988, and will never forget the experience. I was pillion on my friend’s Honda NS400R as my RD350 YPVS was broken at the time. We rode from the UK to Assen, via a ferry at Dover. The GP scrambled my brain. Crossing over the track on a gantry literally blew my mind. We stopped and watched Schwantz et al fly beneath us, with the most beautiful cacophony of sound and aroma of two-stroke haze. The hairs on the back of my neck have never been the same since. By contrast, every form of live motor racing I’ve been to since (with the exception of Top Fuel) has been at let down. Later in life I was able to fulfill my teenage dreams and actually own a road version RG500 and a RD500. Fun bikes indeed, if a little flawed. Ah, two-strokes ❤️

    • @terracethornhill
      @terracethornhill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      The short answer is those bikes were made for racing and there was never a 1000cc class. As I recall, there had been a 750 class, but at some point they decided it was too dangerous, so after that, 500cc was the biggest class. There's only so much power you can use, and 2 stroke power isn't as easy to manage as 4 stroke power. They wanted an exciting competition, not a bloodbath.

      More like 750cc four, since they don't rev as high and usually don't fill the cylinder as much each time

    For a couple of seconds I was in complete awe thinking that the windshield of the Bimota was equipped with heads-up digital display back in 2005. A minute later, I said to myself that those digits reflections in the windscreen looked like the countdown of the digital clock on the Predator's arm in the 90's movie with Arny.
    This weed is too strong I guess !
