    When a company doesn't proactively work with a popular social media influencer after one of their products fails spectacularly on-camera, that says everything I need to know about that company. If they ignore someone with 70,000+ followers in a tight-knit community on TH-cam, you know they won't be there for J. Random Customer when his tent fails.

    Well, after your video about leaks, I set up my Condor with the one piece shell. It’s about 3 years old and I haven’t used it yet. Been building my rig. Anyway, it’s been out in the rain for a few days. Luckily no leaks as for now. Going to seem seal all seems before my 2 month trip to be safe. 22:15 Also my model has the same issue with the ability to reach the switch for LED light if your sleeping with you head at the hard shell side. I don’t have to pockets like yours, but I would just move it to the clear pouch connected to a small usb battery pack. Thanks for the update! Good luck

    Casey, thank you for the update on the tent. It’s always very informative what you share. Sorry you’re having issues that you are with it especially the water that’s unresolved problem to drain. Hopefully you figure that out in the future I’m not set on the rooftop tenant at this point I get the attraction and the benefits, at this point, I’m still going to stay with my tent. I’m sure things will always get developed. That might change my mind.

    Same tent and had it for almost two years. For the first year it lived on the back of the truck. I totally agree with the water down the back and the screens on the wrong side. Luckily I’m not having any issues so far. My last trip was in a week of rain in the Smokies. Also my front door may be different. I have a mini awning that doesn’t have any zippers for use when the rain fly is removed. Then my regular front door zips all the way around and my screen zips all the way around. I only wish it had the duct ports for my Wave 2.

    Casey I have the same issue with water pooling on the rain fly. I tracked it down to a bad seam seal on a small section of the clear window of the fly. Roofnest sent me a patch kit and so far, so good.

    I have camped with several others with this side opening "clamshell" design... 2 different brands than this one, but if it rained hard, they booth pooled up and leaked...sometimes along the frame where the rainfly ends up touching the fabric all night and then coming through. Staying dry is very important , and I sacrifice the space and have a wedge tent... but I have been in hail storms with 50 mph winds, rain for three days... and everything stayed dry (nickle sized hail that covered the ground 3 inches deep sounded like a gravel truck was dumping on the tent). It happens to be a roofnest as well... but I've had it in very bad weather and it has no leaks. Its the falcon 2. I also have an old smittybuilt on a trailer I own and it has a frame that is more like an accordian set up... it only let small amounts of water in after a couple days of heavy rain, but the design had a peak at the top and everything flowed off... even it it seemed cheaper fabric...water had a hard time standing anywhere on it. I wonder if this design just allows for water to pool up and leak.

    Casey, I’ve watched most of your videos and do appreciate all the reviews of tents. I actually have been slow to purchase and finally decided to pull the trigger on the Top Oak reviewed by you and others. Great reviews by the way. I know it’s a lower cost lower point of entry. It’ll be my first purchase of a rooftop tent. However, watching the review of this tent would leave me wanting. I understand some of the pooling in the canvas is kind of a given with most tents unless they’re really taught. The big concern I would have is the water inside the lid. Even if the tennis three years old and out of warranty, I would definitely be concerned if I was roof nest on this review. Like I said canvas I get it water inside the shell I do not. Great review and I’m glad I did not pull the trigger on a roof nest like I was thinking about doing originally.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Id go with the plastic lid version. Lighter and not going to have the lid issue. Everything else is kind of just because of the style and may not be unique to the Roofnest. That top oak seems great for the buck to be honest. Gretchen seems to like it.

    Put a high spot in the middle of a mild slope….just a bad design flaw in that style of side clams. Really noticeable on a lot of those,as soon as you open them . Not sure a couple degrees is going to solve that issue.A short arm running from the hard shell to that main cross bar would at least help divert the water to the sides,instead of collecting it, the way the entrance fly does.
    Good thing it doesn’t rain that often in the greater Vancouver area ;)

    Was looking at Roofnest, but it's absolutely crazy that it isn't more aerodynamic, and that water can find it's way in there at this price point. Shame on you Roofnest.

    Totally agree water in the cap is a pain! However, why is drilling a small hole to drain water such a lame idea? Every car door I've seen has drain holes along the bottom edge. When they get plugged up the door rusts out. Same for every sunroof.

    The water pooling is likely because you aren't using the poles on the side by your cab, thus it isn't completely taunt.
    As far as water getting inside the cover sides, I'd guess the top panel has a gap in the seal between it and the sides.

    I got the new version of the Condor and have some serious concerns already. That heat from the black top is relentless. It does appear at least visually that the upgraded rain fly and tent material should perform better but I'm seeing design flaws even in the new version. It doesn't help that they sent me a tent with two holes in it.

    • @tiffanyjama6243
      @tiffanyjama6243 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a new development...the second time attempting to open the condor it is completely stuck partway open. A Google search shows that several people are reporting that they cannot get the tent open when it's brand new and there is a review on roofnest itself that someone left about the tent getting stuck. One guy on Reddit is having to carry a secondary ladder around with him so he can unhitch it where it's getting stuck. Unfortunately the redesign needs a redesign.

    Good information. I am currently considering the Roofnest Condor Overland for our Gladiator. Maybe I haven’t “drunk the Koolaid” but when you are spending north of $3k for a RTT, it should NOT have these issues. Makes me reconsider my thinking. Did you reach out to Roofnest? I would be curious as to what they say. I really like the clamshell vs the soft top RTT. Really like the aluminum cover vs the plastic. But, this does NOT sound good. Maybe some of those $1k to $2k tents are where it is at. At least if your spending less, you don’t feel so bad when they have issues. I have had cheaper (price and quality) ground tents that have held up and lasted better than some of the high cost RTTs which is disappointing.

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My current opinion is - check out the cheaper roof top tents as a first tent. They quality looks acceptable. I see a lot of designs from companies all looking the same which leads me to believe they are manufactured by the same company and just tweaked for each brand. I think if you want to spend the big bucks on a tent, go with one that is made BY the company and not farmed out. Some that stick out - Alu-cab, James Baroud, GFC. The quality difference is substantial on my Alu-cab.

    If I see this I'm really just happy that I decided not to buy another rtt after my ikamper fail especially since I had a roofnest in mind at some point. On my skycamp mini first the side windows of the rainfly failed which literally rotted away over the winter with a closed tent parked under a car port in the pnw. About 6 months later the top window failed and got cracks.. (in dry conditions). Next was the velcro of the ladder which failed followed by a foot falling off the ladder. I got lucky and ikamper replaced the rainfly and I immediately sold this thing. A lot of money for poor quality.

    • @garretlewis4103

      Agreed about the money vs quality. What RTT are you currently running?

    • @Casey250
      @Casey250  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think my rule of thumb now is - buy the cheapest varient with out a brand, or buy one that is made by the brand itself and not in a shared factory with 100 other tents. Alu Cab, James Baroud, GFC, and a few others all make their tents.
