  • How to Remove and Clean Sticky Keys on M1 Macbook Air Step by Step Repair (Very Detailed Fix)
    M1 Replacement Keys - amzn.to/3dTKLZ7
We have a 2020 m1 Macbook air 13'' that had some sticky after spill damage from the previous owner, probably some soda or coffee. I don't like crunchy keys that stick down and don't come back up properly so we decided to remove the keys that were damaged, clean them, then reassemble. It was only a few key but we used this as an opportunity to show how to take off all of the types of keys on the keyboard it well worth the repair. It will work for all of m1 macbook airs and 2020 macbook airs with intel (i3, i5) and m1 macbook pro as well as the 2020 macbook pros with intel (i5, i7) with the same keyboard switch design, and it will work similarly with other keyboards you may have to do more digging to how the keys attach to the switch. Cleaning your m1 macbook air keyboard or single keys after a spill could save you the discomfort of crunchy keys and could also save you from having to get a new computer. If you are looking for how to replace apple M1 MacBook Air Keys, this video is for you.

I hate to leave comments like this, but if you have sticky keys, DO NOT FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS. You will damage the aluminum hooks and the keys will not pop back in. Just take your laptop to the Apple Store or someone with the appropriate tools. Trust me.

Thanks!! One thing I'll add: if you have compressed air, but it didn't help, then the trick with the card lifting up the key can be a good next step. Without trying to take the key off, lift the key with the card as described with the video and try blowing air under the key again. With the key lifted, it might be enough to do the trick

Woah! Thank you so so much! It's been just 5 months since I bought my M2 Macbook Air and it's spacebar started to squeak! Now me being a typist, this was really bothering me. So, I watched your tutorial closely and then attempted to safely remove the spacebar using an UNO card and a toothpick. It worked! I did exactly what you said, cleaned my spacebar and then installed them back just the way you mentioned. You, my sir, just saved me a trip to the Apple store. You are the GOAT. Thank you so much once again and God bless you!

Thanks for this guide. M1 Air of the daughter had the C key make a different click noise than the others keys. Hitting the key on the top end didn’t register key presses. Anywhere else on the key was just fine. I assumed it was just some lint or debris impeding a full keypress… and so it was! All good. Sure beats sending it back to Apple for “repair”and wait for it.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Thank you so much for this video!

Great tutorial! Helped me not screw up my keyboard. I do want to mention two things:
    1. As an alternative to a toothpick, which breaks, a guitar pick also does a great job.
    2. Further, maybe my keyboard was just extra sticky but the first time I tried it just applying some alcohol with a toothbrush like this didn't work for me. The keys remained sticky. I ended up lightly lifting the scissor mechanism with the guitar pick. That way I could very clearly see how easy the switches would move and whether they were truly clean. For some especially sticky keys, the switches wouldn't move down on their own after I pried them up. After applying alcohol a bit more thoroughly and moving the switch up and down a few times to get the alcohol to the hinges better, it worked like a charm.
Hope this will save some people the effort of having to do this whole process twice like I did.
Also: holy hell this is annoying with the 'Press Any Key to Power On' function. You obviously want your MacBook to be unplugged and turned off when you do this, because even though alcohol evaporates quickly it's still liquid, but that is quite a pain when accidentally hitting any key (which you might imagine is a common occurrence when cleaning a keyboard) turns on the MacBook. Be careful to not brush any other keys or hit the actual button in the middle of the scissor switch mechanism.

      Hello!
This is really helpful advice, I was curious if you could elaborate on what you mean by switches? I'm not great with tech and have yet to take this apart (still trying to see if this applies to M2 airs), if it's something to be extra cautious of could you please elaborate further as you seem really knowledgeable in this? Maybe just what they look like, Thank you!

Fantastic Guide! The keyboards on these Macs are nearly impossible to replace, and require major disassembly. To have a guide such as this that shows how to remove the keys for cleaning, with details, for the range of key types, is simply invaluable. Thanks so much! (Next, I need to pop the bottom off to try and resurrect one of the USB ports that may be sugered up!)

I think ended up breaking a key by lifting at the top/back of it instead of from the bottom. It would be worthwhile to (1) be clearer about how the keys work and interact with the scissor mechanism, (2) the reasons why it's important to hold down the top of the key when lifting it from the bottom , and (3) how important it is to *not* lift the key from the back/top.

But I’ve noticed that the keys that been cleaned started feels different to the ones that were not affected. By feels different I mean I noticed a little drifting and clicking when I slightly staggering them. Is it some mistake I made when was putting them back or they just won’t feel the same after removing and putting back?
