My love letter to cosplay | Adam Savage

  • Adam Savage makes things and builds experiments, and he uses costumes to add humor, color and clarity to the stories he tells. Tracing his lifelong love of costumes - from a childhood space helmet made of an ice cream tub to a No-Face costume he wore to Comic-Con - Savage explores the world of cosplay and the meaning it creates for its community. "We're connecting with something important inside of us," he says. "The costumes are how we reveal ourselves to each other."

Same, I have never been to a Comic Con etc and Adam have never made me want to build movie replicas or whatever, he's never been an "inspiration" to me in that regard, but what he has done is making me a little happier about the fact that he is not afraid to tell us that even if you're 40, 50 or 60 years old and so on, you are allowed to have fun, dress up in costumes and bring out your inner child, just because you become an adult doesn't mean you have to become boring. I kinda love him for that.

I started cosplaying in the '90s when I was in my late 30s. My first cosplay was a original Xena: Warrior Princess character I invented. Its now 2019, and I have my weekend pass for the big summertime anime con in my adopted state. The oldest cosplayer I ever saw was in his 70s, and he was the Third Hokage from Naruto. I"m 57 and I still cosplay.
Point is, you're never too old to cosplay. Go on, geek out and have fun cosplaying! (^_^)

aww man, this reminds me of that one weekend at MCM Comic Con London; I was cosplaying as Extra #66 Ravenclaw Hogwarts student (I bought the actual official robes from the Studio Tour near London, such great quality and wool and looks AMAZING btw) and I kept running into a guy cosplayed as Professor Snape. And omg, my instant initial reaction was to bow and say "I apologise for being in your way sir", and the guy instantly retorts back "be more careful. 5 points from Ravenclaw.". And I saw him around the floor all weekend, and every time we made eye contact, he would make such a stern face and be into character that I couldn't help but react. Cosplay, man.

I am 35 years old and only started cosplaying 4 years ago. I was thinking of stopping because I'm embarrassed due to my age. Until I saw this. It made me cry. I almost gave up on the one thing that makes me happy. I'm a crafter too. Making costumes for other people and seeing the glow on their faces when they finally see their costumes make all the time and effort spent worthwhile. I've always been a fan of Adam since the early days of Mythbusters. Now, he is my hero.

Dude never stop, I'm 23 and been cosplaying for 4 years now too. Seeing people older than me cosplaying is amazing, it's how I want to be later.
I hate the fact that when you grow older you HAVE to be more serious because reasons, no, I want to keep having fun, I don't care if people call me immature at least I'm doing what I love to do. I want everyone to do that, just do what you love even if people will look at you weirldy, the world needs to be more open for things like this.
In my head I'm already planning my cosplay when I'm 40 years old, being old man logan or something like that.
Adam Savage talking about this makes me happy, there's no age on cosplaying.

When I went to checkout the lady asks me why I’m putting so much money on these supplies and I tell her it’s for cosplay for animecon in New York and she looks at me and says “I’d rather buy the costume if I’m spending that much money”
A lot of people don’t get just how much joy we get just by making it from scratch especially if there are NO costumes at all online. I got even more excited.

Cosplay literally saved my life. I was addicted to self harm, i was depressed, and I had an eating disorder. One day, a friend of mine told me that I should cosplay, and I was very hesitant because I didn’t want to show my arms. But I really wanted to cosplay, so I tried my best to not cut. As it turned out, the only reason I have not self harmed is because of cosplay. I hate it when people say that it is stupid, or weird, because I know for a fact that if it wasn’t for cosplay, I would be dead.

"If you keep my secret (that I'm L) I'll give you a strawberry." Everyone I did this too lit up with a smile cuz it's free food but many just loved the idea.
And even tho my wig was terrible so many people were impressed and some actual thought that I had bought my death notes. When I made them myself.
I'm making a No Face costume at the moment and will be doing a more human look. I'll be wearing all black and will have the markings of the mask on my face too. I'll also be bringing chocolate coins.

It's so cool that someone like Adam Savage is openly into cosplay and nerd culture. He's a good doorway for people who don't understand it to be exposed to it and I hope someday while I'm alive it won't be seen as something so weird to the general public because I really love cosplay but I can only share it with those special people who understand.

How I wished I could return to the days when I had such passion. I could go days at a time working on a music video, or playing video games. Alas, the days are gone, regardless of my best attempts at reclaiming them.

      But know this:
True passion never goes away. It may fade a bit in daily life and when growing older you don't feel like you have the time to persue it.
But you don't need to do it a lot to feel the passion. Do it sometimes. When there is time.
      But then really do it.
Feel the memories, the joy. Even the shortest moment of happienes is worth anything if it is percevied fully.

The first time I went to a convention was the most magical experience of my life. I was in an awful Eponine cosplay and when with my mother. I stood in the middle of the main cosplay floor of Dragon Con and wanted to cry. I found people like me. People who wanted to scream and cry about how much they loved something. People who wanted to bring beloved characters to life.
From there, I went on to cosplay as Peggy Carter, Tinkerbell, and Bombshell Batwoman. All these times in cosplay, I have never felt more like myself.

But to be honest, it probably won't work. The kinds of people who believe that comic conventions are about rapists and girls in bikinis are hard-line individuals living in a delusional fantasy world of their own making. They are far more likely to be violent and pose a threat to the rest of civilized society. It would be nice if they could change, but I've had to restrain and sedate way too many of those types to be willing to get within 50 feet of one without a taser.

Cosplay truly is a wonderful hobby. No matter whether you buy your costume or make it from scratch, you have the opportunity to put yourself into a world that you could only see on a TV screen or learn about through a book. Also, we can connect with other people who have made their connection with that fictional world as well.
Cosplayers try to show off characters that dont exist and make them exist. Isnt that what art is all about too? Making something or someone come to life? Cosplay truly is an art form. If you dont believe me, just ask anyone who spent hours on end sewing an entire costume from scratch for 3 months or even taking two years to make an entire suit of armor.

    Cosplay is amazing!
I apologize for the long read ahead.
My first cosplay I made used sheet metal folded into bracers and half greaves, along with LOTS of sewing. Absolutely No one knew who I was, but I didn't care. It was awesome.
My second was from fallout equestria (a mashup fanfiction of MLP and Fallout) as a vault security guard. I bought a jumpsuit, 3d-printed a pipboy, and put an old ipod touch with a screen recording of Fallout 3's GNR in it. Lots of props, a vest, and a bag full of bottle caps later, I got incredible feedback and recognition at conventions and found out I love aviators!
My all time favorite cosplay experience though was Aquaman. I had gained quite a bit of weight in college and wanted to cosplay aquaman in the fall after senior year. I spent the summer working out every day and lost at least 30 lbs. I fashioned (learned from the clunky sheet metal) a craft foam and foil tape bronze pauldron. There was a trident made of pvc that separated in 2 pieces for transportation, and I wore fish scale tights that stayed on my amazon history for months sending me ads for tights all the time. With a few more important props, I walked proud on the convention floor and experienced a different kind of recognition. All sorts of people enjoyed talking to me about the nostalgia my costume brought, a vendor told me about how he and his dad loved the comics, and I took pictures with so many people I forgot to ask for any myself. the 2 piece trident was a stroke of unforeseen genius, as the kids I took pictures with could use the miniature trident in pictures to be Aquaman too!
I can't wait to go to another convention and meet more awesome people. I look forward to excitedly roaming craft stores working on a costume again.

I had been to 2 cons before deciding to cosplay. I remember being so excited but I only had a week to do it. So, I picked Maka from Souleater because of her simple design. However, she also has a giant sythe. Being the over achieving 6th grader I was, I had to make it. My aunt and I spent 12 hours the day before the con constructing a 6ft sythe out of cardboard and masking tape. I fell so in love. Over the last 2 years cosplay has remained the only constant in my life and I don't think I'll ever stop.

If there were no side characters then the Hogwarts school would be very empty and the main characters would not be able to shine the same way they do. Also, there is already so many Malfoy, Harry, and other main characters cosplayer at the convent so some more side characters do not hurt to have. :D

And, because of the foam armor my Cosplaying has included, I was #1 consultant on foam armor during She Kills Monsters, as well as making most of the monster masks/puppets.

Dabba A cosplaying for a living is extremely difficult and even top cosplayers like yaya Han struggled immensely PLEASE ALWAYS chase your passion but don't drop out of school OMG. I know you're joking but in order for cosplays to be recognized it takes an immense amount of money and effort and most cosplayers aren't paid nearly enough for guest appearances/can only make money from Merch and print sales! Never stop creating! But pls learn the other areas you need to pursue in order to pursue what you really love!💜✨

This video brought me to tears. Not for myself but, for my daughter. You just described so vividly her life. Since her first visit to Comi-Con, at 15 years old (soon to be 33), this has been a world I could not share. Her passion for cosplay is her world. So much so, that her major in college was Drama, Theater and Performing Arts (Costume Design). This lead her to work at Disneyland for 5 1/2 years. Gues what? Maintaining and eventually building Costumes for the theme park. Since her opportunities were limited at Disneyland, she decided to get her Master of Art at UCLA in Costume Design. She is currently working her way into the Costumers Union for Movies and Television. Thank you Adam Svasge for giving me, as a dad, such a vivid window into my daughter's world.

I’m in theater class when I was in my college days and most of the time I am in charge on the costume and production designs. I totally agree with him saying that costumes is not only a one way interaction between the actors/cosplayers to the audience, it’s much more than that. It’s another level of communication that gives us empathy towards other people by wearing their shoes, or in this case, costumes.
P.S. Spirited Away is my all time favorite animated movie, too!

  • @CaseNumber00
    @CaseNumber00 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I use to do some prop work for anime related weapons, mostly wooden swords, and there is a clear distinction of those who wanted my items. There was the fun that truly wanted my item to complete one of their favorite character who loved the show and there were the rest. The rest were trying to market themselves somehow and make money but most of them little talent other than that. During my last few years I was often getting solicited by popular costume wearers asking for discounts for their job, can I borrow instead of pay, the dreaded "give me free stuff because it will give you exposure", and sometimes organized campaigns of bad talk when I refuse to sell. I view these people as the decline of the cosplay. I started out 2005 in my late teens and got into it to help my friend make something because I happen to have wood shop and craft experience. I loved working with tools and loved anime and I wanted to keep working and doing stuff. I was overjoyed making items for those who loved a show and the medium as much as I. Around 2011, perhaps even earlier, it started shifting with people making money off if it. At first I had no real problem with it since I believed that these people worked hard to make their cosplay and items, but it changed when I learned most of them didnt make them but rather just assembled it. I didnt quite like it but I gave them the benefit of the doubt since some people cant readily attain talent and skills due to upbringing but at least they still loved the series. I started talking with these new cosplayers and they were not people I wanted to be with at all. A lot of them let fame, for a small niche community, get to their head, heard stories how they tricked others giving them free stuff or worked for them for free. I got tired of watching success go to tattletales, conniving, attractive people, often becoming authorities of matter. Of course, its not all the product of the costume wearers, many of the fans want to give their time to these people and give them way more than the costume wearer will offer back. I am not sure what happened during those 15 years, perhaps mainstream elements of vanity seeped into this fandom that was once wholeheartedly mocked and ridiculed, but I am out of it. I really wish I found and befriended people like Adam in the community that truly loved their shows/movies and relished creation to help me keep my drive going.

I saw this video for the first time two or three years ago, and I cried. I've seen it a few times since, and I end up tearing up every time, still. I'm from a small town, I got constantly bullied and berated about the things I love both in school and home until I was an adult and finally moved as far away as I could. This is such a small problem in the grand scheme of things - other people not liking what I like and being mean about it - but after ten or fifteen years of listening to it, it gets to you. Hearing Adam talk passionately about the same things I'm passionate about really soothed something in me. I want to be like him one day.
