    I’m all for darker Sonic stories, but...not like this. This is too much.
    Also, this art style gets on my nerves.

      Uhh... I don't think that was a segment of Mein Kampf. It is however about genocide.
      ""First they came ..." is a poem written by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller (1892-1984). It is about the cowardice of German intellectuals following the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent purging of their chosen targets, group after group."

    The Archic Sonic comics are a pretty weird case, they tried to be an adaptation of the SatAM series which was already very little based on the games. And some concepts that the comics was before the game series evolved on its own, resulting on very weird, Charmy is an example as he was a character in the comic as a prince and with a girlfriend WAY before Heroes reintroduced the Chaotix.
    I don't want to be too hard on it as for many, this and SatAM was the Sonic they grew up with, but even treating it as its own, it still got very weird during that infamous dark era the comic had, basically, every individual writer was going crazy with the comic, doing everything they wanted without the others being aware and some of their ideas got very inappropriate, like that one writer that had the reckless audacity to reference to Holocaust Poem, I'm not kidding. Cleaning the problems took a lot of time and proces.

    • @jambastion1285
      @jambastion1285 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The Archie comics were pretty much "free for all" during that era and there was very little supervision,
      The history of the Archie comics is pretty weird, it was usually a mix of bad organization and bad communication between the writing staff, the Archie company and SEGA. things started to became more consistent and less weird when SEGA started to supervise the comics more around 2007 as well as having a more organizing staff. Although the relationship with SEGA and Archie was probably too messy, especially because of that since mess caused by Ken Penders, who was also the guy who made that reference. He's really not an awful person, just very oblivious and ignorant.
      The comic started to recover from that dark era since issue 160, when things were starting to become more organized and new writers were introduced, in fact, the majority of the Archie Sonic staff after issue 160 are the same behind the IDW Sonic comics.

    • @jambastion1285

      The characters they couldn't longer use were his characters tho, his concept of the echidna population, as well as Scrouge (originally known as Anti-Sonic), were all his creations, he just claimed them to themselves and demanded to get paid for the use of his characters. Of course, those characters were made under Archie and logically Archie could claim those characters without dealing with his demands, but they lost all their license/paperwork on a burning (which is kind of an example of how disorganized Archie was at the time) and that allowed Penders to sue them. So they decided to give him his characters and no longer use them in the comics, which forced them to retcon things and even abort the ongoing Mecha Sally arc, at the end they eventually rebooted mostly everything. Then the comic got sue again by another old writer.
      It seems that by that point SEGA was just tire of Archie's mess. When they finally confirmed that Archie Sonic was canceled, it took 2 weeks later to announce the IDW comics, rumros say that SEGA wanted to move on since 2014.

    Ok, so there was this one "ARC" that they didn't know how to end, so they ended up putting aliens that attack the mobius out of nowhere. Knuckles is dead by that point, but he sees what's happening on mobius from afterlife, and goes back. Before that he absorbed the power of master emerald or something, (I don't remember) and because of that he turned green. When he comes back to life he losses all the chaos energy (YEAH, CHAOS ENERGY). Also, for some reason Knux is a chosen one...
    The whole Sally thing is what I like to call the dark age of Sally. Long story short. Sonic died, but not really ( He was sent to space, DON'T ASK). Year later he came back, and for some reason Sally wanted him to quit fighting and stay with her in the castle, he goes "No"and then she goes nuts. This state of Sally goes until Ian takes over as the writer. He kinda fixes her, but the damage was already done (Alot of people don't like Sally mostly beacuse of this).

    Its general misconception to blame Ken for things he didnt do.

    They had to continue the plot of the 90's comic that was "Eggman rules the world and Sonic with his friends fight him weekly", something that was written in the most saturday morning cartoon way possible, and attempted to make it serious. Which turned it into "Sonic the hedgehog leads a rebellion against a tyranic genocide madman"

    • @adrianleonce455
      @adrianleonce455 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      -Seedrian Sparkles- Actually, fun fact. Back then in the early days of Archie, Charmy was actually portrayed as a teenager due to the Knuckles Chaotix Manuel saying he was 16 years old. That is why he has a girlfriend. However, due to some games(Heroes) changing him into a six year old, the writer did something. The writer made Eggman mess up Charmy's brain, thus MENTALLY turning him into a six year old so he can be closer to his game counterpart. The main writer soon regretted this change, as it felt wrong to use a mentally damaged person as comic relief, so he made brain damaged Charmy less jokey

    I'm so glad IDW Sonic and Post-Reboot Archie went with a more simplistic approach to both story and characters. It feels like their stories fit with the overall series instead of being needlessly dark and edgy for no reason besides dark and edgy are cool I guess. Speaking of IDW, can't wait for the next issues, I'm loving what they've done so far and it's cool to see the main cast returning (since they won't ever do anything in the main games) and the new character looks to be interesting.

    I found that for some series you just have to jump in at around where the series currently is and accept that there are somethings you're not going to understand. My first experience with the Archie Sonic comics is the Sonic First comic in the Sonic Mega Collection. For the longest time that was my only exposure to Archie Sonic. A few years later I got interested in the comics again and decided to just jump back in at issue 200 knowing that there were just some things I wasn't going to know or understand. And I was right there a lot I didn't understand, but I found that the overall quality of the comic made it so I personally didn't care. The comic did a good job giving me just enough info to know what was going on and that's all I needed. It actually made me want to go back and read what I had missed, not because I felt I had to in order to understand what was going on, but because it just seemed interesting.
    Also the Archie Sonic Comics get way better after Ian Flynn takes over as head writer at issue 160.

      CouchHobbit - this one..bad? You obviously haven't seen how crappy the early days of the comic were. This one is pretty damn competent in comparison. Besides, these mid-later comics are more built off of the fact that you had to read the earlier issues in order to understand the whole scenario. It's pretty simple really.

    Great video, Knight! I love how serious you read this XD Your Sally voice is amazing. Sometimes they really butcher her in the comics, as seen here. I personally love the comics, but they can get pretty weird. The Sonic Saga series has to be my favorite series so far, even if they butchered Tails a bit along the way. (Then again, considering how Forces is butchering Tails now I shouldn’t be surprised) Anyways, what would you think of Ian Flynn writing the script for a Sonic game? Sorry for the long comment again, I love ya.

    This is pretty much the problem with Pre Reboot Archie in a nutshell. There wasn't any kind of structure to it for those who hadn't read the comics in a long time to pick up on and instead jumped ahead of many issues thinking it would all be explained like you did. Boy, would they be in for a surprise.
    Pre Reboot Archie Sonic comics are notorious for many reasons, one is the whole Ken Penders Lawsuit debacle which was really no one's fault outside of Archie's for not having the writers agree to a waiver that said any characters they created automatically belonged to Archie in the first place and what ultimately became their downfall for this stupid mistake, another is the fact that the Pre Reboot Archie Sonic Comics simply did whatever the hell they thought was cool to added fake tension to the stories which soon evolved into changing up characters to fit archetypes they clearly weren't meant for, (looks at Forces Knuckles) now why does that sound familiar?
    And another is their stories. Most of the time they either made no sense whatsoever, created plot holes within their own continuity, contradicted with something in the games, or created things that just didn't fit within its own world ontop of other problems like trying to make new characters related to the main cast in some way.
    Post Reboot Archie fixed some of these problems, but not enough of them for the comics to be fixed eventually leading to the well-known cancellation of the Archie Sonic Comics and the rise of the so far much better IDW Sonic comics. I used to be a fan of the Archie Comics, but the further I read and researched, the more trouble it became to keep up with everything and eventually I just gave up on the Archie Comics and moved on to the IDW comics. Trust me Knight of the Wind, it's not worth it to get back into Archie, it's more trouble than it's worth.

      @SkorpionDoorman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      True and I do like the adaptation, but that still wasn't a justification for how many problems Archie Sonic still had and ultimately lead to its collapse like the Soviet Union. A few good things to come out of a reboot doesn't justify ignoring where the problems still lied.

    • @SkorpionDoorman
      @SkorpionDoorman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Trust me. It'll get confusing soon enough considering there are moments where they reference the old continuity which is another problem with the so-called "reboot" they still reference the old continuity like as if nothing had changed. That is a big no-no because reboots are suppost to be a NEW take on something and never reference the old continuity, a rule that Post Reboot Archie Sonic tends to break a lot.

    • @spiderninja8779
      @spiderninja8779 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      you have a point.

    Actually yep I've enjoyed Archie sonic even though it was at a low point during this comic. It was different then the games which was one of the reasons why I really read them then when the the game content came in it was done in an interesting way. I've will admit what you read is the comic's low point and archie did make means to help everyone catch up, but what do I know, right. Anyway nice video.

    Well for Charmy in the Archie comics he was more mature and around the same age as Sonic and the others but later down the line he get's captured by Robotnik and get experimented on. As a side effect to that he mentally become the Charmy we know from the games this was due so that the comics could be somewhat similar to their game counterpart.

    I've been revisiting the Archie Sonic comics and one thing I find for sure to be true is that there's a lot of weird older comics and they almost remind me of bad 90s kids shows where everything is contained to one episode. I do however think that Ian Flynn did a pretty good job at turning things around especially as I looked into Scourge and Finitevus some more. Although he did have some questionable choices like making Charmy mentally handicapped and playing it off as a which was not cool

But honestly, you did a good job by making this video, and I share your opinion when it comes to how weird they can get. Lol you picked a weird plot line and artist selection to pick up again with! And after all that had been going on in the series before this, it makes this issue even weirder. My sympathies. XD
    Loved your review tho! I’ve collected this series since issue three, and over the years it’s had its good moments, it’s bad moments and it’s strange moments. This was one of the strange plot arcs where the artists used an unusually cartoony style while taking the story EXTREMELY seriously. While the Archie Comics Sonic series isn’t unknown to have some serious and even dark plots, I always felt this unusually kiddie cartoonish style of this period in the comics, and the dire trouble everyone was caught up in from the ongoing story were very disconnected.

    Funny enough this was actually my first Archie Sonic comic. I was completely blind on the series even existing before this as I was extremely young and it wasn’t even when the comic had came out as it was a re release of it. At the point they were ways to hitting 100. And I just say the early 100 comics were weird and were nothing like the original 50 or so with Classic Sonic. But the later 100s were much better after they switched writers. Then because of the switch they had the whole “you can’t use Julie, Scourge, etc” after the Mega Man collab but I think after each reboot Ian Flynn was making it feel much more like what you would expect out of a serious take on the games versions of the characters then what Ken Penders ever did.

      Joyce Ismael it's just stupid. Sonic returns after being warped across the universe and everyone was happy. The kingdom decides to celebrate sonic's return. At the end, sally wanted sonic to step down from fighting and take over as king. Sonic refuses due to him being one of the only one that is capable of defeating robotnik. Sally then goes berserk, slaps him infont of the whole town, and called him selfish even though he's sacrifice his life to save the earth. Then they broke up. The beginning was alright, but the ending was very unnecessary. It's pretty much considered one of the worst issues, if not, the worst.

    I do still enjoy the Archie adaptation but I don't exactly go through the ENTIRE thing. I did enjoy the backstory they made for Knuckles (even if it was written by Penders in his less terrible days). It gave him a reason to at least explore his island and instead of mindlessly guarding the emerald, it made him want to understand why. He started wanting to know what happened to the rest of his kind and he had plenty of room to do so because the emerald he guarded was not located "CONVINIENTLY ON THE EDGE OF ANGEL ISLAND, ASKING TO BE STOLEN". The more he looked into his history the more he found out about his predecessors, they're achievements and the enemy on the other side of their family only to meet his own primary enemy Enerjak.
    If you feel like it I would like to see a video going into Knuckles and Enerjak.

      Harrison Bainbridge the idw comics have provided nothing noteworthy so far. And the reboot Archie series (while interesting) pretty much destroyed the whole original lore of 20 or so years. The reboot also tied the comics too far in with the game version of Sonic instead of letting it have it's own unique identity. It was kind of a cop out to all the things that had been developing for 210 issues or so, plus the knuckles and spin off comics.

    What i think of the archie comics is that they are really trying to put all of this nonsense together and that is really impresive in my opinion, all that tv shows and games that are so far away from each other just put together in a way that makes some sense is really hard to do and i think that have this many dum stuff is just natural. I am not sure how the archie comics works but the "saga" or "issues" that i like the most is the Sonic universe ones, its start with a fight between shadow and metal sonic in the blaze dimension but i was ok with that because it looks really cool and interesting, and then they mention an issue that explain something and i became even more curious about what happened, so my point is that they did a great job not just putting all the sonic series in an universe that everything is cannon but they also maked so if you get lost with what is goin on or you want to just know more they put the numer of the issue so you know were to search if you want. I personally think that is a mess, but what you can do having a series so inconsistent as Sonic.

    I tried to keep up through back issues and the ever-reliable Archives collections, but my Archie Sonic knowledge likewise tops out somewhere around the early 100s. That being said, I found this to be a great jumping-on issue. All you need to know about the current status quo is explained in this issue: Robotnik has Angel Island in his clutches, Sonic and co. are licking their wounds and taking stock of their situation. The art style is a bit strange for the period and it took me a while to remember that Uncle Chuck (Sir Charles) ran a chili dog diner, but otherwise, this is shockingly approachable.
    Also, the cheesy melodramatic moments, such as Charmy's village being torn apart by evil forces, were always par for the course with Archie Sonic, particularly after issue 50, the concluding moments of the "Endgame" storyline. I found it quite impressive that Ken Penders, Ian Flynn, and the rest were able to take a whole menagerie of strange characters and concepts, make serious storylines with all of them that stayed true to the franchise's roots, and that, for the most part, could hold together over an insanely long stretch of issues. I've heard people compare Archie Sonic to Kurt Busiek's Avengers run from around the same time this issue originally came out in terms of drama and tension. I'm inclined to agree with them; it's some of the best stuff I've ever read in comics.

  • @bigtroll8915

    Hey, one of my personal favorite arcs. Always did like the artstyle in these ones. Even though admittedly I'm in the minority. The pre-reboot comics became complicated really fast. So you would need to read the earlier issues (and the knuckles comics) to understand what's really going on. There is a ton of focus on knuckles in the pre-reboot comics so it makes this arc all the more difficult to just pick up and read out of nowhere.

    Yh the archie comics before the reboot was a wild West when it comes to story telling for this franchise, since I think sega just allowed different writers to experiment with the characters rather than actually setting a path for them to follow, hence why ken penders along with the others implemented such obscure content. This is why the comics after the reboot were much better since they actually followed a route that helped to define the characters for who thay are rather than just allowing writers to do what ever they want, although some of the rules on sega side should be amended since they are not really needed.

    Honestly, if you want a better spot to start with the Archie Sonic series, start with when Ian Flynn was given the reins. He ditches the love triangle crap real quick and does a much better job at characterizing everyone with Tracy Yardley! at his side making everyone visually fit into the Sonic universe much more seamlessly. If you don't want any story baggage and don't want to sit through Ian Flynn finding his groove you could start with the post-Super Genesis Wave issues, but the time in between Ian Flynn entering the picture and the large-scale retcon event taking place holds some of my all-time favourite moments in the comics as a whole that got me either genuinely laughing or shedding a tear.
    Though I will admit, the whole Iron Kingdom arc is a real slog save for some cool moments, and the whole sub-plot with Tails' parents still confuses me to no end.

    As others have said there are a lot of things that will be explained if you read the comics (and considering you only read the first 40... yeah this is 138 and that's like OVER EIGHT YEARS of time lapse so of course things are going to be different unless you're doing a pure comedy zany mad cap hijinks with no continutiy whatsoever to it) though I should point out one thing: The reason Charmy is serious here is because his whole "being a prince" backstory was something that was fleshed out In Knuckles comics 13-15 aka "The Chaotix Caper" which was posted back in 1998. See the Chaotix in the Knuckles comics and I guess honestly until the post reboot continuity were Knuckles supporting character and since they were around since the Knuckles Chaotix special from 1995, obviously were given personalities and stories LONGGGGGGGGGGGG before Sonic Heroes in 2004 revamped how the Chaotix act and operate. And it was Sonic Heroes that reintroduced Charmy into the games continuity and gave him a personality (which he didn't have in Sonic Chaotix obviously) of being a goofy obnoxious spastic kid. But that was not his personality in the comics at all... well until like Ian Flynn felt "eh I want to make Charmy more like he is in the games" for whatever reason and had his mind zapped and destroyed a lot of his intelligence in 176 to make him more of a random goof like he was in the games even though again he hadn't been like that in the comcis. But the point is you're suppose to take Charmy seriously here because he's not a stupid silly character. Honestly of the characters in the Chaotix the only one that fully fits that is Vector in the comics and he has a whole thing that uh not going to really get into here put point is there's a reason the comics are structured this way and why everyone acts a certain was as well.
    But that's just from a super sonic comics fan and honestly I like people who either haven't read the comics in awhile or don't know at all offering outsider "wait what's happening" interrpreations of the material like you or the Game Grumps.
