- im locked in a room with robo and she wont stop describing the sonic comics to me. why are there so many echidnas? what's a sega genesis wave? why is tail's uncle literally just the actual wizard merlin? please help me
You know, people talk shit about the sonic OCs but they’re probably more original than the official characters if Zonic the Hedgehog is any indication.
I'd take Mary-Sue the Hadgehorg over Ken Pender's monstrosities any day.
In my honest opinion the Zone cop characters were pretty cool all of them had a take no shit attitude

No all the zone characters are like that. Replace or add z as 1st letter in name. Examples: Zhadow, Zecter, Zvo Kintobor (Z'egg-man), Zouge, etc. But aside from the rest of the sonic multiverse gets pretty crazy.

dejablue88 the ova happened 10 years before the lawsuits, and only had help from Sega. I'd also assume that the Ova had to give up it's rights of any character designs to Sega, who let Archie use them, in which Archie lost to Ken, in which the designs are now owned by Ken. Key word is assume.
Just modify the design of the hat a tiny bit and it should be legal.

Scourge was hilarious to watch. 'goofing around' was short for switching places with the real sonic, and flirting with every girl including bunny who had a boyfriend. He ended up convincing Fiona Fox to play both Sonic and Tails, breaking both of their hearts and their relationship with each other apart. Scourge and Fiona never break up and Fiona even helped Scourge find his confidence after being pummeled in jail. She even built an entire team for him. Scourge's girlfriend track record is cleaner than Sonic's! XD

I imagine it's like Kingdom Hearts: It might seem insane, but gosh darn is the delivery so sincere and genuine that you get sucked in by the characters.
I mean, I liked the insanity. I gave up on them after they murdered a lot of the canon, I miss the stuff that was inspired by generic fantasy shit. I thought it was way more appealing than any other aspect of the entire continuity. :(
i think IDW's run is pretty solid so far. i've read every issue and they give us great stuff and they do really seem to love and care for this stuff hell they give some "deep cut" cameos like g-emerl from the handheld games.
I tried the newer comics, they...were too silly for me, I guess they're fine for people who like sonic's "default genre" (crazy japanese cyberpunk) but I'm not really a fan of that myself and I feel like too much of the mythologized aspect to the world is just gone now and it's tilted too far into sci-fi for me to like. TBF, I always hated that about the main games too, and the comics were initially how I came to care about sonic at all because its original genre wasn't doing it for me.
I guess the upside for a lot of the 'true' fans is they get to purge the nonbelievers now XD

Believe it or not, the comics are what actually made me a fan of Sonic. I get how weird they come off as to someone who hasn't read them, but I didn't mind most of the goofy ideas and characters, Sonic just inherently is a goofy concept, and the comics embraced that and did some interesting things story and character wise (though I do feel the Penders era was more dumb than interesting). I'm a big X-men guy, so having a big cast of characters doesn't bother me, and the writing on the series, especially when Ian Flynn took over, actually got me invested in the stories and characters in a way that the games didn't. I've actually done a few videos on my channel about them if you'd like to see more of what I'm talking about.

Did you know that after Ken Penders got rights to those characters he created, he tried to make his own animated movie starring Laura-Su, Knuckle's daughter, but after showing the artwork which was really crappy both cartoon movie and comic I think were cancelled.

+TheJediSonic Pretty much every non-game/cartoon character was retconned in post-SGW because they clashed with the new continuity; it didn't matter that they weren't created by Ken Penders. There were a couple exceptions, but aside from Nicole's redesign by Tania Del Rio, I'm pretty sure all those exceptions were Ian Flynn characters. Oh, and it wasn't just Ken who went after Archie. Scott Fulop was also trying to claim copyrighted ownership over Mammoth Mogul.

Man, I really need to get back into rereading the series. I originally got into near the start of Flynn's run (right where that horse character died, actually), so I never really appreciated how weird the cast and story were previously. Really, hats off to Flynn for taking the mess and somehow making it work. Regardless of how terrible the history was, I'm still sad that it all got retconned in the end.
Btw you mentioning the Super Genesis Wave and bringing up the list of deleted characters made me think of Ken Penders as Thanos and that made me laugh way more than I should've, so thanks for that!

The most beautiful thing about Scourge is how his sunglasses are too small for his face and you can constantly see his eyes behind them. It’s like if someone wore sunglasses that were only big enough to cover their pupils, it’s so stupid and hilarious when you see it and think about it

As much as I hated what Penders did with all of the lawsuits (and his storytelling in general), I actually do really miss the characters he came up with mainly because they received a great deal of overall improvement after he left. If it's any indication for how far they came, hands-down my favorite Archie character to ever exist is Geoffrey. Probably my favorite character in general if I really wanted to be bitter about the characterization of a bit of the current cast--not that I'd think it wrong for anyone to like them or anything.
Point is, I've actually taken a year to read through all those comics with my closest friend sans the Knuckles original series because... frankly we couldn't force ourselves to do that. BUT we actually want to go through them again because they got so good pre and post genesis wave. Not that I really need to say that LMAO
We aren't getting the wolf clan back again, which I am upset about, as well as the loss of scourge and hershey.
deathlegionair yeaaaahhh.... none of the Archies are coming back for this iteration. I was really starting to get into the lore they were building with the Mer Mobians, not to mention the fact that Scratch, Grounder, Coconuts, Breezie, and Von Schlemmer became characters right before the end. Although I imagine fish people will be easier to recreate so there SHOULD be some similar aesthetic coming about at some point, right? Probably not for a while, but still.
However, the lack of humans and the new multiverse thing where they only exist in their own world irks me... But at least it’s super early in IDW Sonic’s run, so who knows for certain how long things will be barred off completely (looking at the fact that Mighty, Ray, nor Eggman Nega will ever make an appearance)
It's IDW, they tend to make some good comics, and amazing looking covers, including some of the most metal Transformers covers ever.
Unfortunately many of the post genesis wave stories were just adaptations of the games, which is fucking lazy and unoriginal.
Quite a lot of the mobian sea animals were just reskinned versions of existing characters.
Microbicorb 559 I’d agree if they were actually unoriginal. They took the concept of Sonic unleashed and only grabbed the main aspect of the Dark/Light Gaias, Werehog, and the planet breaking apart. I guess if you want to call it unoriginal that they had to use ideas from the games, then that’s on you, but I pretty much enjoyed all of that stuff-the Champion’s arc is hands-down my favorite archie arc to date. Plus, last I checked, there was never a tournament-styled fight going on in Unleashed, nor were one of the temples located in the ocean.
That’s still my opinion, though. I didn’t see any unoriginality in how they treated using plotpoints from the game, but I could also be looking through rose-tinted glasses being that Sonic Unleashed has and might always be my favorite Sonic game.
However I actually don’t understand your point about the sea Mobians designs being reskins of characters that already exist. Mind pointing that out for me? And I’m not speaking sarcastically, I’m genuinely curious.

I recognize most of these characters (and I can't decide if I'm feeling the warm fuzzies of nostalgia or vicarious embarrassment having read this series for well over a decade) and I actually like the storylines involving Jules, but whoever drew that particular image (I'm guessing Tracy Yardley) just *mangled* poor Robot Dad's design, he's unrecognizable.

Most of those characters that Ken Penders created did needed to be purged out of existence, but I did at least liked the designs and "some" character traits of Julie-Su, Scourge, Fiona Fox, and the Wolf Pack Twins post Ken Penders writing.
And good to know that Ken Penders is still, to this day, super salty. More content for my friends and I to laugh at every now and again 😂

Yes we had 2 Robotniks.
The first got so angry over losing all the time he created a erase everyone doomsday device and almost killed Sally Acorn by proxy. See the End Game arc where only he got erased due to his nephew arranged sabotage.
Robotnik Mk2 the current version, once tried to invade the prime Archie Sonic Universe but got beaten back by a Sonic and Robotnik team up. Later MK2 would come back and take over the original empire and even briefly bring back the original for a one off failed scheme to good cop bad cop the freedom fighters. The original Robotnik's fate was to be lost to the place his doomsday weapon sent people thanks to Sally reprogramming MK2's device.

New IDW run's pretty tight, the OCs aren't ripoffs of established ones from the games and the art's really good pretty often.
And best of all IT MAKES SENCE
What, did you not like the backstory of the fucking witches and wizards and shit from the Archie comics? That was the best part.
But that's kind of the problem right there. Even though the writing (may be) good so far, the issue with IDW's interpretation is that it will probably end up not lasting very long. You see even with all of its insanity and plot issues, the archie series lasted for over 20 years, which is a pretty damn big accomplishment for a game character comic. But a lot of what made those comics interesting was that most of it was not from the games, it was its own unique storyline...just based on sonic. The archie reboot tried to tie itself more to the games when it could and it didn't end up lasting very long for certain reasons. I personally just feel that IDW is just going to go nowhere unless they establish things not based solely on the games alone. I mean its pretty closely connected to sonic forces at this point and that....isn't a good sign.

Yeah that's kinda sad really. Characters like the original few freedom fighters have been in so much sonic media and have been around for so long that it kind of sucks that they'll probably never come back, especially with how they were in the satAM cartoon, referenced in sonic spinball, and are so well known.
George Baynard They pretty much just make a spin-off version of the major characters that were cut. Like there is literally a Sparrow version of Rob o' the Hedge that is exactly the same.

@Brandon Gray The IDW comics are an absolute joke. I knew I was gonna get blamed for Sally, Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor, Nicole and Snively not being in the IDW comics. That's all Ian Flynn's fault the SatAM Freedom Fighters and Snively aren't in the IDW comics. Mighty, Ray, Bean, Bark and Nack are only in the classic series. Ian Flynn is and always will be a disgrace to Sonic.
The wife of Knuckles does not wear pants. That would not fly by SEGA today. In terms of characters these days, SEGA requires that male characters do not wear pants and female characters wear pants.

But on a technical note, I was wondering about some of the effects you used in this video. I'm guessing that the transition was a manually tweaked transition put on an adjustment layer and used for all the character transitions? But that's a shot in the dark, really. But for your usual purple cyber-hud BG did you composite that all in After Effects or is it a tweaked template? It all looks clean.
But yeah, cool shit. Fun seeing the erratically of the Sonic cannon eat away at a man's soul.
The transition was a template I got online, and the BG is a Free Background Loop that I just made purple
