    I totally agree with everything you showed and said. But you needed to show one more option in Lowe's. Their Poplar wood selection (at least in my Lowe's) is awesome. You need to sort it to eliminate the green and brown streeks.....but it carves great!
    I enjoyed this segment and Mickey's comment is exactly right.

      We were actually considering doing Poplar. I (Ryan) have used it several times. But, we tried to stick to 5. But I think we'll do more of these types of videos. Thanks Frank!

    When I first started carving I learned a lot from your first video on how to look at a pc of cedar for holes and open spaces. This video is a big upgrade and will help many people.

    Love the American prices on milled lumber. I bought a 1x12x8'-0" (1/2"x11.1/2"x 96 milled). approx. 2 months ago from a big box store for $69.00 here in Canada. Ouch!!!!. Thank god my family have access to Cedar, Poplar, Pine, Elm, Oak and Beach on our acreage and our own mill, down side is the drying time (6 to 12 months) and the hand milling and sanding afterword so if I need a piece of lumber quickly I have to pay the box store price. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir. Every one is going thru the same thing. Sorry for the rant, love all your video's always look forward to the next, your Canadian Fan / Friend.

    Love your "road trip" video's! It's always fun to see what is available at the stores. Since it often changes you never know what treasures you'll find. I'll have to check my local Lowes to see what they have now.

    I totally agree with everything you showed, I absolutely love the select pine for making my flags. You did forget one other wood that is great also, the teak rounds and panels, they are a bit pricey but you can definitely make a good return on your investment, and they carve nice as well.

    Awesome video! I use the cedar fencing a lot for other projects as well. One downfall to the cedar pickets is that a lot of them have the 'vertical grain' and can be hard to carve.

    Very interesting, although I am a beginner, the signs I make, I give away to friends and family. The picket fence is one of my favorites, the other boards are too expensive for me. I have purchased some live edge boards and had great success. (Sassafras, Cherry, and Ash)

  • @lenshandcraftedwoodsigns6033
    @lenshandcraftedwoodsigns6033 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Unfortunately my Lowes here in Massachusetts does not carry Redwood, nor cedar decking, nor cedar pickets, nor cedar boards. It is all pressure treated southern yellow pine, not something you want to carve and breath. Poplar is cheaper by about 10% , compared to select pine. So I use a lot of poplar.

      I live in mass too but you can get cedar decking in NH Lowe's. Salem NH or the one in Nashua. Get it all the time. All I do with the decking is shave off the rounded edges of the deck board on a table saw. You got something you can laminate them. Easy pee-zee..

    I've seen some cedar picket with no knots on one side only to turn over and on the back side are knots. This is always my issue. I shop Lowes and Home Depot.

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว

      Th knots on the back side are no big deal, unless they go all the way through the board. If one side is clear of knots, then just use that as the face of your sign. You shouldn't have any issues while carving those boards.

  • @billlarrabee9436

    I find that pine is hard to carve cuz it has hard and soft grain and it cause my bit to dodge and dart all over the place Maybe my bits are dull I need it order some I guess

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely possible, but it also depends on what pine you get. Regular pine boards are pretty grainy, but that premium pine is awesome to carve

  • @garykorzelius5930
    @garykorzelius5930 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those boards are end glued panels. There is no lamination covering the wood just boards glued together.

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By laminating, I mean that multiple pieces are glued together. I should've been a little more clear on that point. Thanks Gary
