- Chivas USA were maybe the most controversial team in MLS history. The "Sister Club" to C.D. Chivas Guadalajara, had a wild ten year history in MLS, that ultimately ended with them being bought out by MLS and officially ceasing operations one year later.
While some see the entire Chivas experiment in MLS as an embarrassment to the league, there is more to the story than people realize.

The whole Chivas USA/Guadalajara thing had me confused as a kid as well.
Especially because as I understand it Guadalajara is basically known for only having Mexican players, then they suddenly have a US affiliate that presumably has to have mostly American players? Still it was pretty cool, I wish they'd stuck around. Having an ethnic based team is a really bad idea, but I have to admit I'd be interested to see a team with a very Latino-oriented fanbase.

I believe one the main reason,chivas usa declined even more, after 2011, was cause the xolo of tj became a first division team in Mexico.a good percent of the fans were based in san Diego/tj.

Im mexican american support the real Chivas from Mexico. and never went to a MLS match la galaxy chivas usa or lafc. I live nearby and dont find it exciting lol

I followed the MLS a bit as a kid, part of the reason why I'm a galaxy fan is because of there being a Chivas USA when me and my family are mostly Club America fans.

I’m loving your channel I just discovered it yesterday and I’ve already learned a lot about the MLS. I initially started following when NYCFC came into the league since I’m from NY and RBNY still feels like a New Jersey team to me. Watching your videos taught me a lot about how the MLS functions and the history of the league. I haven’t been following closely since it’s hard to follow teams in other sports as well as European soccer leagues but I’m actually very excited for this season and the future of the MLS. Your channel has great content promoting the MLS and soccer in the United States. I’d love to see videos covering things going on throughout the 2020 MLS season since I as well as many others do want to follow the league but don’t have the time to watch MLS games. Hopefully your channel blows up as the MLS and soccer in the US gains even more popularity. You’re doing great!

You hit it right on the nail, the problem was the Chivas name, (living in LA all my life and growing up as a Chivas fan, it was even hard for ME to take a "Chivas USA" brand with seriousness and respect.) Also, I remember hearing a rumor that Club America was looking at expanding in the US, I'm SO GLAD the Chivas USA project failed, imagine if Instead of LAFC, Atlanta United, etc, we were living in a reality where MLS had teams like Chivas USA, America USA, Real Madrid USA, OH HELL NO. This was a great video. And I agree with everything you said! Especially the part where you said getting Liga MX fans to hop on board to support Chivas USA was going to be tough because many of them supported rival teams of Chivas Guadalajara. That is why you see LAFC being more successful. They have Chivas Guadalajara, Club America, Cruz Azul fans etc. RIP CHIVAS USA.

I played for Chivas USA academy back in the day when they dispersed. My coach was fired because he couldn't speak Spanish and he is still one of the best coaches I've ever had, really a bummer.

@Ivan Mora Chivas USA had an unofficial policy where a coach, player, etc. had to speak Spanish. Plus be Mexican or Mexican American or the very least from other Hispanic countries like Honduras, Guatemala.
I’ve had a hard time getting into soccer, but the history of the MLS is so interesting and odd that I’ve become enthralled with it as a general sports fan. I’m glad I found this in my recommended because I now have a channel to inform me on MLS happened and happenings
Lol history... if you want to get into football dont watch the mls. Watch the Bundesliga or the premier league, basically teams that would wipe there ass with any MLS team.
I know that Premier and Bundesliga are LEVELS above MLS in terms of talent. I just think that the fact that a soccer league in the US managed to find success is really interesting, especially considering the fact that it was in danger of folding in its early days. Not to mention its unique structure compared to the rest of the world. I guess I like unlikely success stories

Like the Premier League has been a sanitized league from its inception in the early 1990s (founded basically by Rupert Murdoch for Sky), unlike the previous first division and the rest of the Football League.
And everyone with eyes can tell that the Premier League and Bundesliga are significantly better than MLS.
Like there's something endearing about MLS' history (and US soccer league history prior to MLS) because of how rocky it is. And you can easily watch the Premier League or Bundesliga in addition to MLS since European matches are early in the day (or morning on the west coast) and MLS matches are in the afternoon (and you could probably go to a match if you live near a major city with a team).

Luno, I had the same experience too when I was a kid as well. I used to think that Chivas was from Los Angeles. However, I once saw a jersey that said Chivas de Guadalajara. And I was confused. But it wasn't until I was in the sixth grade that I learn there were two Chivas teams. One was the original, which is based on Jalisco playing the 1st division Mexican league. While Chivas USA was an offshoot of the original playing in MLS.

Good job. Very interesting history of the team. You mention they were second-tier so maybe they would have done better as a USL team. I agree about the Latino market and also agree that as a Santos Laguna fan I had a hard time cheering for Chivas USA. Maybe if the team was comprised of top players (semi-retired maybe for cost) of other Liga Mexico teams. Hard to say... Thanks for the retrospective.

Yo just a tip. I have a jersey wall in my bedroom similar to the one you have there. If you turn the hangar upside down so the hook is at the bottom, you can just balance the hanager in the pin or whatever and then it hides the hanger and just looks way nicer.

The name Real Salt Lake was meant to give the club an prestigious name not too different from say Real Madrid.

DemoManMLS Real Madrid has the name "Real" because the King of Spain approved the club, just like Real Sociedad or Real Betis or Real C.D. Espanyol Barcelona etc.. That's why there are two teams from the same city/state in Spain. there is one who's proud of the King of spain. and one who is proud of the state like RCDE Barcelona (Spain) / FC Barcelona (Catalunya).. Real Sociedad (Spain) / Athletic Bilbao (Basque Country)... Real Madrid (Spain)/ Atlético Madrid (Madrid)... Real Betis Sevilla (Spain) / FC Sevilla (Andalousia)... etc with that being said idk if there is any king in Salt Lake City or in Utah who approved the team...
Yeah I love what it means in Spain, but it feels very unauthentic for SLS given the origin of Real. It’s like when they were looking to brand it they just chose from options that were already established rather than something authentic to Utah

You should consider doing a segment on Ray Gaddis. He is a much talked about figure prime in Philly lore. He is an amazing guy, and apparently clubhouse leader, but super one dimensional, and serves as a microcosm on the Union and their lack of 'flashy purchase ambition'. I personally think the club is turning a corner but an overview of his career, and the number of minutes he has yet to score a goal, would be quite the amazing story that few know

Chivas Mexico has a Bilbao type rule that bans non Mexican players. Chivas USA got sued for discrimination when they tried to replicate that in LA and the fans abandoned it for being just another MLS team. Without the Mexican only rule, Chivas USA wasn’t a real Chivas team.

The idea of Chivas USA will only go towards fans of Chivas since Chivas only fields Mexican born Players. The only problem was that it just couldn’t target every Mexican Soccer fan such as myself, really only Chivas fans. Basically to any Mexican fan who wants to support for the MLS, just support one of the teams that have at least one Mexican Player or if your Mexican American, support the team that your state represents.

You just scratched the surface on Vergara’s ambitions: he bought Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica around this time and later was setting up infrastructure for a Chivas team in Hefei, China (although this never materialized). Then there were always rumors that he was gonna try to do the same in other countries.
I could write an essay about this team. To look at why she was Chivas USA did so poorly, you have to look at what was going on at ChivasGDL. To keep it short, after winning a championship, Vergara sold off a ton of great veteran players and replaced them with....no one. He thought he could compete in mexico with a bunch of 18 year olds. Granted those kids had tons of talent, they lost a ton of games and really looked lost not knowing how to execute ANY coaches system. He sent some of these nobody kids to play in chivas USA and they looked lost here too. His same philosophy of super young inexpensive young kids was tried on both sides of the border. The worst thing is how much youth talent he ruined during these years. Chicharito was the ONLY kid that was brought up to div 1 with patience and pace. Other kids like Cubo Torres, were thrown in at 18 yrs old to play 90mins and lose all of their confidence. Vergara became ultra cheap with both teams and most fans begging him to sell the team. I remember an altercation between him and fans at the new Omnilife stadium. It was a nightmare for Chivas fans and Guadalajara. Guadalajara had the history and following to survive this eventhough they almost got demoted to 2nd division, but Chivas USA was too weird to survive.
Chivas USA isn't gone, you have Chivas USA 2.0...Oh wait they go by LAFC now.

As much as I hate the purely Euro style names, even they're better than a name that doesn't even have the name of the city or state in it. It makes sense to give the Galaxy an in-town rival in, as you mentioned, the N° 2 market in the nation, but I'll take 1 called Los Angeles Football Club over 1 called Club Deportivo Chivas USA any day. So I was fine with Chivas USA folding.
I had "purely" in that because names like Seattle Sounders FC are ok with me. At least it incorporates an American style name.
Yes a few of those names such as the Sounders (the "FC" is totally unnecessary there) are ok just as a novelty... but now they are *way* too many.
The league should have simply gone back to naming teams like the old NASL... they made far more sense to the average person who lives in those cities.

It’s premature to say RIP liga Mx befauee talented Mexicans comings over to mls. A lot of the last generation players are playing mls, but I wouldn’t cal them the foundation. Chucky Lozano isn’t playing in mls. However a lot more talented South Americans are coming over to

I think chivas USA would have better luck if it was a: less of a b team and more of a side team like NYCFC AND B: Called themelves something that didn't alienate non-chicas fans, have a name like Deportivo Sur Pacifico and modeled their identity after Liga mx club but didn't use CDG imagery apart from the colors

Chivas USA academy was actually really dope and successful, I enjoyed playing for them for years. It was never gonna survive at the MLS level though with the way American soccer is structured. So much lost talent.
I'm in utter shock at the realization that they lasted 10 years. It felt like the experiment only lasted 5 years... tops.

But even then, no support for anything not Leon... Teaming up with United Farmworkers maybe would've made me see things slightly different. But, any Vergara project to me is very off-putting
