Lamar Hunt once fought the NFL to a stalemate. Forced a merger and established the modern super bowl era through sheer force of will. I imagine he saw that $250,000,000 loss, laughed at the universe’s pitiful attempt to derail his vision, then set out to save American soccer. The dude was a force of nature.

Honestly Lamar Hunt is one of the most important person in the history of modern American sports. And should be a household name.

28 games in 2002 had several reasons: teams took time off for the WC group stage, it reduced travel costs, and the league wasn't keen on extra Wednesday games.

The 2003 announcement of the lengthening of the schedule into November along with adding two games also notes more weekend games.

I'm Brazilian and the 2002 World Cup was my first World Cup as a USMNT fan.
I also started watching MLS in the early 2000's, I'm a San Jose Earthquakes fan, but I like all american soccer teams.
2002 MLS All Stars Game was my favorite All Star Game, after USMNT magical run in the World Cup...seeing a game between MLS vs USMNT must have been a lot of fun.
I like the MLS golden years, we had great players and teams at the time, unfortunately are now despised by fans. People don't understand that very good players played in MLS in the 90's and 2000's.

I used to watch games in progress on channel 5 in the UK. After Baseball around 4:30 in the morning, and always enjoyed it. It wasn't the best quality of football, but I always liked rooting for the underdog. To see what it has become, and what it can still be is amazing.

2002 was the year I started watching MLS. It was usually on about 4 o'clock on a Thursday night/Friday morning on UK TV channel Five. Usually after Argentine or Dutch football. And occasionally if the baseball or hockey finished early on a Wednesday or Sunday night. They'd show an MLS game in progress afterwards. I can remember telling my dad when it came to the world cup that summer. That the USA were going to do better than expected because of these 2 players they had by the names of Brian McBride and Landon Donovan. He scoffed at the notion that (in his words not mine) the yanks were any good at football. Years later I remember him telling me that the 2 of the most underrated players to ever play in the premiership were McBride and Donovan. And that he wished that Spurs (my dad had been a Tottenham fan since the early 60s) had signed them. Some of my favourite matches ever were early 2000s MLS games. DC United Vs the Dallas Burn, last game of the 2002 regular season at RFK stadium. DC needing to win or miss out on the playoffs. And the Columbus Crew at home to an already eliminated Chicago fire. Last day of the 2003 regular season. Crew were 2-0 up at half time and the fire came back to win 6-2. Are just 2 of them. I still have them on VHS even though I don't have a video recorder to watch them on. Because I want to one day find a way to upload them on to TH-cam or something. So to think that those memories could easily not have happened unless Lamar Hunt stood his ground. Is a very sobering thought.

Only Toronto FC in 2017. However that was the 'Canadian Treble'
No one has ever won the Supporters Shield, US Open Cup, and MLS Cup in the same season. Besides the '02 Galaxy, the two teams to get the closest were '97 DC United, who won both Supporters Shield and MLS Cup, but lost in US Open Cup Final; and '03 Chicago Fire, who won both Supporters Shield and US Open Cup, but lost in MLS Cup Final.

I always look forward to your videos and love your content and how you present each video! This last one was no exception as the MLS darn near folded as I recall during that time. I had a concept for a future video if you are looking for ideas? "What if there was no MLS because the original NASL from 1968 had actually survived and was still around today" What would it have looked like through the years? Would it have matured and have been on a similar road as MLS Or would it still be the colorful league it was back then, trying to play by it's own rules and always be trying to "americanize" the worlds game? I get that in reality this was probably not possible due to how the NASL was structured and how money was spent back then, but I have always wondered this question?

Ngl, the old MLS kinda did looked really dusty and boring. The old MLS logo looked like it was designed for a random football team of 5 year old kids💀. Also, Some of the teams logos didn’t looked like professional football(soccer) teams logos, they actually looked more of NFL teams logos, especially the old Dallas logo. Some of the teams uniforms also looked pretty…ugly. Playing in huge stadiums also didn’t looked very great bc the seats weren’t really full. As a Mexican fan who watches the MLS, I do have a soft spot for the old mls, but I definitely do not want to go back to the dark ages.

I want to say the Rapids started doing a fair number of "special event" games to boost attendance during that time. As I lived in Denver in those days. It definitely wasn't the soccer they were playing. Because they were anti-football. Which is why, despite Denver being the first city I lived in with an MLS team, I loathe them instead of became a fan.

Agreed that college soccer should try and emulate FIFA rules more closely. It has definitely lost a lot of steam since academies became a thing. There are still some gems though.
