Remember in MLS when the WIZARDS became SPORTING KANSAS CITY

  • They began as a team with consistently sparse crowds in an extremely oversized football stadium, and transformed into a team that consistently sells out their state of the art soccer specific stadium. Sporting Kansas City is one of the most impressive success stories this league has seen. But how did they do it? That's discussed in the video.

      Chad Ochocinco was originally a soccer player and had wanted to play soccer over football, but obviously MLS pay back in the late 1990s wasn't exactly great (I think the top salary back in 99 was around 30k) so he chose to play in the NFL instead. Ochocinco still loves the beautiful game!

    The Wizard's identity was based on the Wizard of Oz. And fun fact, a lot of SKC fans still lovingly refer to our boys in sky blue as the Wizards. We even have a tradition where before each home match we sign "When The Saints Go Marching In" but we replace the word "Saints" with "Wiz"

      Victor A Hopefully, if Phoenix Rising and the Las Vegas Lights get into MLS, which I think they will in the next 5 years or so, they keep their unique names instead of going to something generic.
      I don’t mind one of each Euro-style name, for the most part, but it’s pretty ridiculous to have multiple of them. There shouldn’t be 3 teams with United in MLS, and 2 teams with City. And Real Salt Lake is just an awful name.
      Supposedly Charlotte is just gonna be Charlotte FC or something bland like that. I really hope they change their mind and become something cool and unique like the Charlotte Monarchs.

    The Wiz was the "modernized" movie version of The Wizard of Oz released in 1978 starring Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and Richard Pryor.
    So when bunch of designers, many of whom had probably never been to Kansas, but who watched the Wiz as teenagers a decade and a half before MLS launched, get to design the team for state they've never been to, this is what happens.

    14:46 I also had a reason in addition to for their fans' sake to support #savetheCrew. When all this expansion is done and Nashville switches conferences (from their wonky current alignment in the West despite being southeast of Chicago), that will *double* the number of Eastern Conference teams outside of the Eastern Seaboard since the league announced intentions to expand to 28 teams. From 2 to 4. I figured the conference needed more teams in that area, not fewer.

    Great video! The badge is based off the state line with the dark blue and light blue stripes representing a team based style for 11 players instead of one big star player. They were going to make it off a fountain since KC is the city of fountains but our kit design team said in a interview they couldn't get it to work in a badge so they went with the state line. Which is a big thing in kc with KCK and KCMO. And many dont know the badge includes the kansas missouri state border going back to the civil war jayhawks and the KU MU rivalry. Also we are the third most succesful mls team with the 3rd most trophies in MLS history besides DC united and La Galaxy. And wizards name celebrated based of Wizards of OZ and thats what the cauldron supporters section is based off of with the blue hell to this day.,

    I remember going down to Kansas city that weekend for my mom's work (she owns the H&R block in my city). My family got to Kansas City on a Sunday when NASCAR was in town. We decided to eat at Applebee's right by the stadium. We see this stadium that has banner's everywhere promoting their first game (June 9th vs the Chicago Fire). Me as a 10-year-old who doesn't even know the team name wanted to go to the game. My parents got tickets (for me and my dad) at the hotel. What we did not know it was the opening night of the stadium.
    I guess I have a good reason to support Sporting Kansas City. The only thing I remember from that game was a drunk fan dressed up in a cow costume decided to jump onto the field. If I remember he also scored a goal for Chicago.

    Another odd bit of Wizards history, or at least it was an "Urban Legend" back in the day. Their mascot, "Chopper The Dragon" was also a full time Kansas City, Missouri Police Officer. I remember going to the games back in the day (1998 to 2001). Even with 15,000 fans in Arrowhead it still just looked like some of the friends and family of the team showed up. I believe I remember one game with over 20,000 fans (on the lower level only), during the 2000 season, and it just seemed crazy in comparison to most of the games.

    Good content as usual, I live in the Uk and I’d have to argue the Wizards name had more possibilities Internationally and domestic than the sporting branding it was just mishandled and you’re spot on to be called sporting you normally have multiple sports teams as an organisation, tacking it on just seems forced which is what puts some overseas fans off about the MLS alongside a few other things.

    • @alternatehistorysports
      @alternatehistorysports 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. I've actually grown to love the MLS for doing things differently, team names like 'Real' and 'Sporting' feel contrived, names like City and United are just a bit boring imo. I love the original names like Galaxy and Fire. I do like the branding of Internacional Miami, it makes a lot of sense given a massive Latin American population as well as a diverse range of nationalities in Miami. Sporting could still redeem themselves by starting a Major League Rugby team, yes that's a real thing.

      I disagree about "Inter Miami" because that's basically saying that unless a team has some Spanish term in the title, Hispanic fans will somehow not understand what's going on and stay away...
      Hispanic fans are like any other sports-loving fans in any given city... they will pay to watch quality games, regardless of the team name or which players wear the jerseys.
      For example, the Texas Rangers (MLB) and the Dallas Cowboys have really big Hispanic fan bases... when they broadcast the games in Spanish, the announcers call the teams "Los Vigilantes" (Rangers) or "Los Vaqueros" (Cowboys).
      It wasn't necessary for either team to use a gimmick in the title to lure Hispanic fans... soccer should be the exact same.

    • @alternatehistorysports
      @alternatehistorysports 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davepazz580 I see your point it could feel a bit condescending, but I still personally like the name. However 'Real' feels so wrong, clubs named 'Real' have a connection to the Spanish Monarchy, it might almost make sense for a former Spanish colony in the USA, with a Spanish name like San Diego, but for Utah it makes no sense. In Salt Lake's case they actually have a good excuse to go with the boring 'City' title as it's widely known as Salt Lake City, so SLCFC works fine. In general though when they try to copy European teams with 'Real' or 'Inter' or 'United' or 'City' it feels a bit contrived to me. I prefer the names like 'Galaxy' and 'Wizards', I don't want another EPL or La Liga, I watch the MLS and love it for being different.

    • @davepazz580
      @davepazz580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1.) I like the old MLS colour scheme. Its different to what we see with other major sporting leagues in the US, in a sense that it doesn't use the red/white/blue colour scheme.
    2.) "Kansas City Wiz". Ha! Were they taking the piss?!
    3.) Kansas City should drop the "Sporting", and replace the word with "SC" (Soccer Club)
    4.)Winning the MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield should not constitute as a "double"...
    5.) Teams should do throwback kits like LA Galaxy did in 2014.

    • @davepazz580
      @davepazz580 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @michaelstein7510
      @michaelstein7510 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phoenix is an obvious choice. Arizona is a huge state that doesn’t have an MLS team yet, and Phoenix Rising is trying to join the league. I think it’ll happen in the next few years.
      Las Vegas seems another likely addition, and San Diego will also have a chance.
      I think MLS will choose two more expansion teams before the new media rights deal is negotiated after the 2022 season. Phoenix and Las Vegas is my guess.

    • @michaelstein7510
      @michaelstein7510 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’ll certainly be an interesting case study on how quickly an ambitious owner can assemble a competitive MLS team. Charlotte will only have about 14 months from being announced to playing their first MLS game, which is the shortest time to prepare for any team in the league’s history.
      If David Tepper puts his money where his mouth is, Charlotte can be a great team very quickly, like LAFC and Atlanta have done.

      Alt Football they actually started as the New Orleans Jazz but moved to SLC because they were going under in NOLA. They decided to keep the name because it was too close to the start of the season to get approval from the league to change the name.

      DavePazz maybe that’s the problem

    • @davepazz580
      @davepazz580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a problem but unfortunately, not enough people will be willing to pour millions into building soccer teams from scratch with no guarantee of making some money back on a scheduled basis...
      When you pay to operate a franchise, you automatically guarantee the person buying into the franchise he has a real shot at it.
      Which is why all the top US sports leagues operate in a pretty similar fashion... they wouldn't even exist without it.

    • @davepazz580
      @davepazz580 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      *tell that to Real Madrid.*
      What does Royal Madrid have to do with anything here?

    • @davepazz580
      @davepazz580 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      *they are the wealthiest club in the world and invest more in a single player than your franchises pay for their team.*
      They are also based in a country where soccer is the number one professional sport, guaranteed tons of revenue from a name brand which took a hundred years to get to this point... not so here.
      *AC have been relegated Rangers have been relegated*
      And because those teams are based in countries where there is really only one major sporting obsession, fans have no choice but to largely stay put and keep supporting their team.
      Not so here...
      *A league without promotion Or relegation is just ridiculous.*
      What I find is even more ridiculous is "relegating" the fans to watching inferior teams for an entire season when they personally had nothing to do with the players performance whatsoever.
      Only the players and coaching staff should suffer any consequences for bad performances... not the ones actually paying to watch a spectacle.
