The MLS feels as if it’s afraid of being what it is. It’s America’s soccer league. Not a soccer league in America. They need to understand that and go back to having fun with their teams and images again.
(Houston 1836) Dynamo has rebranded once already and had 3 logos. Playing in black in Houston is beyond stupid! Quit rebranding and getting a worth while team on the field. I dont care if all the players are white, black, hispanic, blue or purple.
@@Hero-and-Hooligan Agreed. The dumb gimmicky branding almost killed the league. I don't like the PseudoEuro branding of the new teams and they definitely need to refresh the branding strategy a bit, but some of those names (Mutiny, Burn, Clash) need to stay dead. The logos and colors screamed 1990s gaming edgelords, no one took the league seriously back then.
Americans trying to Americanize the world sport is a pretty shit take considering how the sports that are big in this country don’t have a huge footing in other countries. not to mention the reason teams are named Los Angeles galaxy or Chicago fire or Columbus crew is so like in most American sports if the owner decides to move the team they don’t have to completely rebrand and just change the city name like Brooklyn Dodgers la Dodgers and so forth. using words like football club or city or United is showing a commitment not to a brand but a community it seeks to create. I think that’s why some of these teams are rebranding. they need to become ingrained in the culture of their respective communities and you can’t do that with half your brand out the door. That being said not all these brands and teams are bad timbers might be one of the best examples of old mls branding working it would be hard to move that franchise to Texas and call it the San Antonio timbers right?
I hate the Charlotte badge, looks like a random generated badge from football manger for a team they don't have the rights too. Just doesn't show any passion they have for the club and looks like they did a 10 minute job on a logo creator website.
The name sounds boring too. I somewhat liked Charlotte Monarchs. Kinda reminds me of Monarcas Morelia before they got relegated and changed the name to “Atlético” Morelia. Sounds gay
As a European I prefer American teams with ‘American’ names such as Galaxy, Fire, Impact etc. - it’s what separates USA from the rest of the world. The logic that adopting ‘European’ names such as FC, United, and City will give MLS sides more appeal internationally is absolute nonsense. People in Europe are not going to watch MLS when they can watch the Champions League, Premier League, La Liga etc. - also because of the time difference, MLS games are never going to be on at times when Europe is going to watch, you’re 7+ hours behind us, it’s just not feasible. The trend has worked for some teams like Atlanta United and LAFC but now it’s just getting silly.
Looks to me that you don't actually watch football, most European team have a weird name because they were made by sailors hundreds of years ago, just because the Premier League is full of united City towns fc, that says nothing about the sport. The MLS should also get more artistic with the names and come up with something that truly represent the people from the area in which those teams play
FC and united are fine but stuff like inter miami and real salt lake are dumb. it would make sense if maybe salt lake had a lot of Spanish immigrants or if miami had a lot of italians but they dont.
@@webmwithsound Well Utah was a part of New Spain in colonial times and Inter just means International and Miami is pretty international. Just saying, but I get where you're coming from. Some fans here don't like the copying of Euro club names either.
What made these design worst for me was that the day after Charlotte FC was announce. NHL Seattle announce that they would be Seattle Kraken. That the type of branding I want to see more off in MLS. If MLS is going to be different go all the way
I did a double take when I read Kraken on my Google sports notifications. I thought it was some exhibition game like the Harlem Globetrotters. Turned out they were a legit NHL franchise.
I totally agree! Montreal Impact changing their name was frustrating. Chicago Fire is one of the most traditional teams in the United States, they do not need a rebrand. The old logo was very beautiful. I like names like Fire, Galaxy, Earthquakes ... traditional American names. But unfortunately, MLS is losing their identity. I hope that will change in the near future.
In 2000, San Jose was correctly re-named the Earthquakes. We were the first MLS club to embrace our NASL roots. The managing group at the time did what everyone in Silicon Valley wanted to happen in 1996, bring back the Quakes. They FAILED with that logo and they straight insulted us with the color change to blue. I applied for a job on their web team in 2000, and at the interview I asked why they didn't go with our traditional red, white, and black, and I was told that they surveyed 'people' who explained that when given a choice they would rather wear articles of clothing that was blue instead of red. (!!!) Our latest crest looks like clip art because of the ball, IMHO. I was told by someone inside the Quakes front office that when the Quakes submitted logo ideas for that rebrand, there was a shaking globe instead of a ball, which would have been MILES better than what we ended up with. Apparently the league told the Quakes to put the football in the logo because "all of your other logos always had a ball in it." If that's true I think those east coast league officials should let the clubs design their own crests. Maybe if they did we wouldn't have so many cookie-cutter logos here?
MLS is trying too hard to be a major league. Imagine if Spurs changed their logo and name to Tottenham FC. American names set this league apart from other leagues. Edit: I also want to add that after a club's name has been around for awhile and is well liked, it makes no sense to change it. Montreal Impact is a great name. Imagine if the Galaxy rebranded to Los Angeles _______. Seattle Sounders have had basically the same name since 1974.
As a UK fan of the MLS I love when it does something different. trying to copy the Prem or La Liga etc just feels contrived, I much prefer the Impact, galaxy, Sounders etc because they're unique names.
Tottenham is not comparable at all, Tottenham have existed for over 100 years and most MLS teams (at least in their current forms) are less than 30 years old. Plus Tottenham was created by regular people, MLS teams are created by billionaires.
@@zizoushifty1483 You're not wrong that they're not comparable and that their circumstances are different. But if you step back and take another look, that's exactly why the MLS clubs shouldn't be trying so hard to recreate the same styles of identities that European teams have. There's no point trying to appear like a club that was made in 1882, it'll always look either generic or inauthentic and it's going with the worst thing available in the circumstance. If you're a young club in an entirely different culture, then use that freedom to design with modern and local tastes in mind to start with.
The Charlotte FC thing was maddening. It was like "yeah, we were never going to pick any of your names and the name you all didn't want you were going to get".
i was hoping for Queen City FC, its not as basic as {city} FC and not really a football/basketball team name like Charlotte Hornets. In my opinion its a nice name and QCFC sounds nice
@@rafavalls3395 👈👈👈 *This right here is the right opinion.* Even one of their options "Charlotte Monarchs FC" would have worked. But "Queen City FC" is *definitely* the best option 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Here’s my thing with STL (as a native). There’s technically two St. Louises: St. Louis City and St. Louis County. The team doesn’t play in a suburb, they play in the actual city. For me, the name works. Badge and colors is also great.
@@MarloSoBalJr I was referring to where the stadium is physically located. If where you play is in city limits, then use of the name “City” works. You can represent the entire region (or however large your TV blackout zone is), yet you shouldn’t have a name referring to a location if you don’t physically play in said location. That’s just me.
I think MLS needs to abandon trying to name our clubs like their in Europe. North America has a unique naming system. Let's use that. The use of the [City] [Nickname] format could be something unique to the US that makes sure anyone who hears about our clubs knows it's from the US. I just think soccer should be like other American sports in that sense. You don't see basketball teams in Europe being named the Rhein Panthers or something. They use their naming convention. We should use ours.
I'm an MLS fan from the UK, as i probably say too much, but the point is I love the MLS because it's different. No point in making another premiership with half the teams called United and the other half City, it's been done to death. Go all in on the cool names, have cheerleaders and tailgating and drafts.
@@alternatehistorysports Also teams like West Ham got their nickname (Hammers) from the fans, teams like Minnesota United put Loon on their badge and referred to themselves as Loons since day 1. Its dumb. If you are gonna be the Loons then just call yourself the Loons and not United.
I don't understand why Montreal changed their. It was so sudden and made no sense. I hate how all the new teams are either FC, United, or City. Charlotte Monarchs would have been a great name
Even though I'm a TFC supporter, I respected the Impact's history, so this rebrand was really frustrating to me. Toronto vs Montreal games are gonna feel weird now since it feels like years of history between both clubs has been erased.
Don't these MLS morons know there's teams in Europe that acutely have official nicknames. Like Rangers, Celtic, Hotspurs, Wanderers, Rovers, Heart, Atalanta, Rapid, Racing, Olympic, Red Star, Dynamo, Spatrikus, Juventus, Internacional (Inter Milan), Victoria, Celta and others.
I love the old one. It is reminiscent of the old Soviet style football club badges, sort of like the CSKA Moscow one as an example. I assume that was intentional, along with the Dynamo name which is common in Russia and Eastern European clubs. And it's kind of funny how they have a communist red army badge in the heart of Texas.
I would have like the name Dynamo Houston to continue with the eastern European convention but on the other hand it sounds weird in our context and would have been just as bad as just adding FC.
Im a Houston supporter, and no we don’t like the new logo. There was nothing wrong with the old one for us and adding the “fc” is just tacky. What we want is a winning product on the field. Not a new logo.
As a Dynamo fan, I am not a fan of the new logo. The old logo was boring, but it at least had some history, even if it wasn't much. I would have been fine with a new logo, as long as they tried to keep some element of the old badge. Instead of the lightning bolt, they could have kept the old star with the lines shooting out. They could have kept the font instead of this new boring one. They could have kept some blue trim, like they did on the Dash. I also really hate adding FC to the name. That being said, its better than Montreal. I don't get this obsession with MLS teams going with FC/SC/United/City names.
I agree as a Houston dynamo fan like that money we could’ve use to buy new defenders Nd I love the old badge that’s what I grew up seeing so it was perfect for me now this one is weird Nd idk I can’t get use to it Nd the the FC is super bad like why
It does seems like MLS has an identity crisis in terms of trying to chase the trend of going with the Euro-Style club names for the sake of appealing to the futbol supporters (european fans and for better or worse, Eurosnobs. the same ones who look down MLS for the wrong reasons.) and it feel like they're afraid taking risks on the branding. As far as the Charlotte FC one, It looks nice and I can understand the meanings within it in terms that the city has a mint coin making history and the Queen City connection with the crown; and the St. Louis SC one looks fresh in terms of the shape of the badge, the colors, how it structures with the word mark and also the context of using the SC as a acronym for Soccer Capital considering that St. Louis has a very deep and rich history of soccer for over a Century! Also, as far as the Dynamo rebranding, it was a mixed bag in my book in terms of the badge looks okay, but how they explained and handled the rebranding was ridiculous. The Montreal one, That's the one that pisses me off as much how it's supporters are; The logo doesn't look bad but don't look great either, but the way how the Front Office's way on how they approached the rebranding for the sake of "Just Because" is absolutely inexcusable. The Chicago Fire are learning from their latest crest fiasco and it shows that the front office cannot be apathetic towards it's die-hard supporter base, otherwise they'll pay a steep price. Fan input should be implemented when it comes to the club identity and I hope they use the colors of the Chicago city flag. That being said, MLS Club owners need to take the supporters groups' input to consideration whenever these situations occur rather than being so apathetic and expect them to accept it for the sake of it.
I like Chicago fire first logo, I have no idea why they changed it. I have a feeling FC Dallas is going to be the next team to come out with a new logo. I feel like MLS wants to go towards the European way minus the regulation to 2nd division. I haven’t watch MLS soccer since NYCFC first came up to the scenes but this channel is amazing, I don’t know how you don’t have more subscribes.
As a Nashville fan, I’ll admit I was a little disappointed with the name, but when I went to the first game, hearing and seeing 60,000 people chant “NSC”, I think that changed my opinion from disappointed to more positive. Even with the Badge, a little disappointed, but it has definitely grown on me for sure
Yeah during the corners! I felt the same way. At the time I was hoping we’d stick with something closer to our USL branding, but you’re absolutely right. I was sitting in the back line sections in that first game against ATL UTD and everyone cheering NSC in unison was amazing. I think having a more generic team name is gonna let us come up with some cool nicknames for our team. The Boys in Gold, The Notes, The Six Strings, the Coyotes, all are pretty cool. Also I think as time goes on I’ll come to love our badge more and more because of its uniqueness and it’s boldness. Lastly, I’m still kinda underwhelmed by our jerseys, but I think our colors give us potential. In a few cycles I bet we’ll be getting something pretty cool.
As a fan of football in Europe, seeing the Chicago Fire logo for the first time in this video with that main color blue, seems strange. Why not take advantage of the color of fire as the name suggests. A red, yellow orange, or even some kind of burgundy, would seem better than that dark downbeat blue
The St Louis badge is cool. I remember the launch of NYCFC and it was a disaster. That really put me off for a while, but I couldn't support Red Bull. I'm glad they came around. Now about that stadium...
Thanks for covering Charlotte FC. We’re super excited for the team, and the organization seems super ambitious so far. I was initially underwhelmed by the name too but, contrary to your guess, it actually WAS the clear fan preference. They conducted fan surveys and polls at the launch party, through the SGs, and through broader emails, and Charlotte FC was the most popular choice quite easily. Maybe the Twitter crowd reflected differently, but in Instagram comments for example, it was overwhelming for Charlotte FC. Hard to go against what the casuals and masses want. The hardcore MLS fans are gonna be there regardless so you gotta go with mass appeal to build a fanbase from scratch. I’ve accepted it. And the crest I liked from the beginning. Everybody here wanted a crown/Royal theme and to play up the Queen City connection. Maybe it’s been done before but it’s what we Charlotteans wanted. And we have a better claim to it than fucking RSL. All that said, great video! Love the channel!
I don't live in Charlotte so my opinion isn't really relevant, but I would've really loved if they'd gone for the Panthers branding, call them Carolina Panthers MLS or even just Panthers FC. I mean they're already in a stadium with 'panthers' written everywhere, and the team logo, and obviously they own all the rights to it.
@@alternatehistorysports I think most fans want the club to have its own identity and not ride coattails. It would be lame if Atlanta United was Falcons FC, right?
@@jthomashair I honestly don't think that would be lame, but I get everyone has different tastes. The main advantage is it taps into an existing fanbase, and not only that but some franchises have a long history. Say for example a new team is formed in Milwaukee, and they call the team the Green Bay Packers. That means they are part of a very long history in the area. bad example, cuz fuck the Packers, but do you see what I'm saying? It doesn't have to be an NFL team either, it could be a baseball or basketball franchise, but NFL works best because it's also a field sport. Also if the team is playing in a stadium which has 'Atlanta falcons' written everywhere, with the Falcons logo etc, it just feels a bit strange that they're Atlanta United. Imagine if they had a totally different color scheme, sure it's their own identity but it just looks strange in their surroundings.
@@alternatehistorysports There are no Falcons logos in sight when ATL UTD play. That stadium was built equally for them as much as it was for the Falcons. I imagine it will be similar for CLT FC. Not saying you’re wrong for liking that idea, I just think that most soccer fans would want the team to be its own thing. People like being part of building something new and exciting, of creating the history.
That’s interesting, I would not have guessed that. I went off mostly twitter and reddit polls, but admittedly it was probably more MLS fans rather than just strictly Charlotte fans. Thank you for clearing that up though!
As a person who has studied all the teams in MLS, I feel sad for y'all. The impact name has so much history behind it and just getting rid of it is disregarding the history.
SORRY calling MERDE here. YOu do not speak for every single Montrealer (or Quebecois) stop saying "we all hate..." when you know damn well its not true.
Tbf to the MLS teams the constant rebranding happened in the early years of European league football as well, teams are trying to figure out what there identity is and will eventually find one they can stick to
As a Sacramento fan, I just hope we dont change our badge its already amazing. Its different but classy at the same time. Unfortunately I think we will change it.
@@BKIslandersfan I completely agree Sacramento Republic FC has a great ring to it. It keeps its American roots of an original name but isn’t corny like the Wizards or anything like that.
Just as an outsider I kinda like CF Montreal, I think their new badge looks cool, and Club de Foot is I suppose an homage to Québec as the French area. I have no issues with stuff like Fire or Earthquake but I do find Dynamo and Real hilarious. Dynamo is a sports society in the former Eastern bloc and a lot of Dynamo teams like Moscow and Berlin are related to the secret police, KGB and STASI respectively, while Real is given by the Spanish throne. Seems weird for NA teams.
I...dont mind most of the more generic names. The thing is early MLS veered so hard into the American sports scene of the 90s and it led to the league being memed to death, now I feel they're overcorrecting in the other direction. Even if you want to use Eurostyle names...theres more than just FC, SC, City, and United.
I completely agree with your opening comments about loving the mixture of club names... although I prefer team names like Timbers, Sounders, Galaxy, etc. I think you're spot on with your badge/name assessment as well; nice work!
Hello from Montreal Canada, thanks for your video and opinion on the new logo of my hometown team. What a waste of time and money changing our name and logo , the backlash from the fans is big and even that a protest against the new logo happen last week.
I'm a fan of the Revolution, and I think the name is fine. But the club crest has been a goddam disaster right from the get-go. It sucked then and it sucks now. For unknown reasons, other than the Kraft's well documented tone deafness when it comes to marketing and public relations, they refuse to entertain any attempts to adopt something unique and attractive. Oh, those who like it maintain that it's unique. Well, each turd is also unique. But in the end it remains a turd. There's a good reason why no other club has anything like it. And it's not a flattering reason. JMO!
That is great that they are rebranding Chicago. That logo was bad. Houston perhaps instead of the letters it could have been that lightning bolt. Montreal I am not a fan of the name repeating itself. Perhaps Impact could have been placed on there. I like St. Louis and their logo. I feel that would have been the direction LAFC would have gone if they selected red and black as their colors.
I’m a die hard dynamo fan, and I still love them despite them being not great these last few years, but I cannot express enough how much I hate, HATE the new crest. It’s to the point that I’ll go out of my way to find merch with the old logo
As a fellow Fire fan, I would much rather keep the Florian cross, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s gone or significantly less prominent. I just hope the rebrand is actually unique to Chicago and not generic minimalist nonsense. However, I actually kinda like the colors from the failed rebrand. That shade of blue/purple is actually kinda cool., but I recognize this is unpopular.
I actually love these old MLS names and I am so angry about the new name for Montreal. Additionally I was so disappointed with Miami’s name I expected something new but surprisingly no.
How is St Louis not the “Arches”? The graphic arch even looks like an A. Fortunately the fans of these teams can bless them with whatever nickname they want ... that’s happened in other American sports. The official name is not the final word. So let’s hope the fans get creative.
We've had all sorts of supporters groups names here in Salt Lake since the very first one, The Loyalists (referring to loyalty ot the King-connection with Real word). I dont think there's a slang term here for the team, just the collective "Real" took a while to sink in, but its deffo hardcore now.
There used to be a team in the NASL that went by AC St Louis. I really wish they could have run with that name. Something about AC St Louis always worked for me.
As a CF97 supporter as well, I feel exactly the same way. I used to be a Section 8 season ticket holder before I moved away (I payed dues to the ISA and went to meetings, etc). I haven't watched a match since they unveiled the rebrand - simply because whatever this thing: it isn't my football club anymore. They jettisoned every reference to what we were and shoved an entirely new identity down onto us instead. I honestly thought CF97 was dead. The news of them scrapping the rebrand and making an effort to return to what we were has me feeling cautiously(!!!) optimistic... but this club has wronged many of us repeatedly and ignored/marginalized us consistently. Honestly, what can we expect? The sports landscape in NA is oligarchic; I was shocked they even considered fixing their mess at all. As always seems to be the case with anything related to CF97, my anxiety persists. To quote Andrew Wiebe(?), "the Free Space is disappointment".
5:06 maybe it's an auto logo, but just the arch for Saint Louis wow Once I was used to it the Saint Louis Stars were the NASL Along with Sounders Timbers Whitecaps Chiefs Atoms Cosmos
I really wish these expansion teams would do more with their name than just slapping FC at the end and calling it a day. That's why for now my favorite is Inter Miami. Even if I plan on leaving the state of Florida I still like that they did something no other MLS team has done plus they have David Beckham as the owner. Like Charlotte FC could've capitalized on the city's history as the main hub for NASCAR and called themselves Racing Club Charlotte, the Charlotte Pacers, or the Charlotte Thunder. As for a few others (If I could come up with names), I'd prefer names like the Austin Express, the St. Louis Archers, the Cincinatti Lions, and the Nashville Stars.
Just found this channel! Long term RBNY/MLS fan from Wolverhampton, England. Found the Metros by playing championship manager 0304 and its been a love affair ever since. Late nights watching games, money spent on jerseys. Should've been over last year for the Hudson Derby but covid puit pay to that. If you ever want to do a video about mls across the pond, I'd love to be involved. Keep going mate!
I feel so bad for Montreal.. history disregarded in such a disrespectful way. Im a Houston supporter and by no means am I happy about the rebrand but atleast we keep our “historic” name.
The Charlotte thing really disappointed me. I'm 100% with you, not every MLS team should be city, united or just FC, it's boring as hell. With Charlotte they have the same ownership as the Panthers, they have the same stadium, with 'Panthers' written all over it. Why not just go with Carolina Panthers MLS? It would be cool as fuck, and not only that there is a huge fanbase you could tap into that might support them because they already love the Panthers image. All that said, I have to say that Charlotte FC is better than Charlotte Town. I mean maybe things are different in the US, but here a town is a couple of thousand people max. Charlotte is a pretty huge city, not a town. Town just feels wrong for a big club. Any football club with 'Town' in the name is probably shit. Oh and St Louis had the perfect opportunity to say screw you to Kroenke and use the St Louis Rams name. Just change the logo a little, and take back what's yours. Rams would be a great name for a soccer team, it's the nickname of Derby County already (btw counties are usually shit teams as well) and they have a rams head badge. Ah well. Wonder if the next Franchise will be United, City or FC? Or maybe they'll mix it up a bit with a Rovers.
Oh and btw I knew the Charlotte badge reminded me of something. It looks like the generic logos in Pro Evolution Soccer when they don't get rights to real club names and images. Google 'Man Blue PES' for example
100% agree with the Montreal thoughts. The badge is cool but it washes away so much history. I have mad respect for Seattle, Portland, even Vancouver for keeping there names. Just gives that rich history that is needed
The thing that annoys me about the new Dynamo crest is that it's not really being fully rolled out. Two major sporting goods stores in Houston don't even have any merchandise featuring the new logo. Granted they have a fair amount of Dynamo merch but nothing with the new logo. This matched up with the fact that the academy teams are still playing in jerseys with the old logo makes it seem like they didn't go all the way with it.
Sacramento is going to have to change their badge if I am not mistaken. I may be remembering this wrong but I am pretty sure the MLS will not allow teams to use badges or colors that they used in the USL. At least thats what was released by Nashville SC when they announced their logo and color change from the USL. Most people in town here wanted to keep the old colors and badge but the ownership group said at the announcement event MLS made them change it.
From St. Louis. Color is fantastic and the badge certainly is getting better with time, but the name certainly missed the point. Without getting too much into it, the city is independent from St. Louis county and there it a huge divide between the city, county and the region as a whole. If you’re gonna have a classic soccer name, United would have actually made sense because soccer and sports in general is what unites the region. Oh well, it’s not the worst. I do like the choice of naming the team SC though. We aren’t in Europe and, alternatively, we were the original Soccer City in America.
You know European soccer fans mock mls for being different then normal leagues but when mls tries to do what European teams do they mock them as well they can’t win
I'm a European football fan. And I think the MLS trying to copy things in Europe is just a big no no. The MLS is it's own thing and they should do their own thing. Sticking FC on your team names is just stupid and it's look like the MLS is trying to pander to a European fans or gain some kind of credibility with them. I've been watching the MLS for the last two years and I like the differences between it and say the EPL.
As a Brit who watches the premier league, circular badges and names like City, FC, United seem normal to me, but the names in the MLS where the club nickname is part of the official name was refreshing and unique. The fact they are trying to reflect all the other leagues with their standard titles feels like it is taking away their identity. Very few clubs in the UK have a title in their names, the only ones I can really think of are Tottenham Hotspurs, Nottingham Forrest and Sheffield Wednesday, and I'm not even sure if Wednesday is a nickname or just another suffix. The other clubs all still have nicknames, like the Red Devils, Toffees, Cherries and the Saints, but usually it's only the fans that know them. The fact that MLS teams are/were usually known as these things, like impact, fire, galaxy and earthquakes, it's cool and fun and I hope they don't all dissapear.
10:07 Dollar Beer nights at PHX Rising games are always fun!! Can’t wait till the season starts in the newer bigger Rising Stadium 🏟 hopefully one day they’ll be sold a franchise slot in MLS 🙏🏽
I Remember masive hate to the 09 rebranding attempt of chivas (the main club) changing the colors of the lions and tree part to white & red on the bottom already got it in the bus
Video suggestion, what a about a ranking video on the top supporters section. Not top supporters but rather their dedicated sections within each stadium. Eg. Nordecke and sections similar throughout the league. Could just be an info video if you don't want to upset anyone by doing rankings.
As an SKC fan I would like the rebrand way more if they kept the wizard stuff in some way. Fan area calls themselves the cauldron in memory of the wiz.
The point at 9:30 about releasing the concept and gauging opinion before going all-in is EXACTLY how i feel about the new Timbers Army logo. The board just picked one (a very boring one IMO) without ever asking the community what they thought.
I think that, aside of the name and the logo, there are many things that define the image of a club. But thats cultural, requires time. Manchester Utd are the Red Devils because a manager had the imagination and the rugby club of the city went by that nickname in a tour in France. The Real Madrid hardcore fans are the vikings. The Borussia Dortmund Yellow Wall is one of the most exciting experiences in world football. 25k ppl jumping, showing tiffos and shouting all at the same time. All of them have "traditional" names. There are also some old fashioned ways to name your team that are more interesting than city or fc. United, Cricket Club, AFC, Racing Club... to name a few
Charlotte should have went with Charlotte Town FC in my opinion! It would have kept it with the traditional feel like they were wanting but also makes it unique in MLS and makes sense for Charlotte since they call it uptown all the time. Would fit for the locals, kept it tradional, and unique in America
So in England you go Blackburn Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bolton Wanderers, Tottenham Hotspur, Milton Keynes Dons, West Bromwich Albion etc. But yet in the US, the new teams don't see the appeal in that and because they're are less popular. It's one thing you got DC United, it's another when you decide to have Atlanta United and the FCs and SCs and etc.
The draw just happened with the CONCACAF Champions league will you do video on that? Also Montreal probably want to reflect the French identity of the city.
I think why I've contributed so many of the almost 34,000 views at this point is so I can leave a comment other than expressing amusement at the opening. My favorite of these new logos is StL City's. Danny said in his logo ranking video that the red doesn't stand out enough on the dark blue background on RSL or the Fire's logos; St. Louis found a way to fix it. I think the fact that the blue is nearly as dark as that worn by the Texans in the NFL and also the red being so bright both help with that. I agree that CF Montreal's snowflake is nice ("pleasing to the eye," as Danny put it). The new team name is weird though. I'd be surprised if that was actual French for "football club." For the Dynamo, my only thoughts were, they added FC to the end of the name like the Fire and, the hexagon shape is unique in MLS (and probably not all that common in all of soccer). The absence of the silver makes me wonder if they're ditching it. But then, St. Louis' logo doesn't include the yellow. For Charlotte, all I really thought of was another crown and circle and I expected the color scheme, what with being run by the owner of the Panthers. I expect some new logo for Sacramento. I just hope they stick with the Republic name. Last but not least, Danny's and my shared favorite team: the Fire. To use Danny's baseball metaphor when he was talking about the Dynamo, not only is the oval badge "not ... a home run"; it's a flat out foul ball! Emphasis on "foul." I left a comment yesterday on an Instagram post of theirs thanking them for listening to the fans and expressing excitement at what they come up with. I'm right with Danny on saying that getting input from fans "is so appreciated." I'd like one of the stars from the city flag as the shape of the badge.
I totally agree as a fire fan. The logo and the new uniforms and branding didn’t feel like the fire anymore. It didn’t seem like the hometown club it used to be, and I stopped caring too. Hopefully they go back to the old logo.
I am biased as a Sounders fan but I think the league should have stayed with the North American style of naming for all of its teams. I'm tired of trying to fit in with Europe, its OK for us to be our own thing and have the city+nicknames formula. Half of the 'FC' or 'United' style teams have a nickname anyways ex. Minnesota Loons and Orlando City Lions
This is ultimately my beef with teams like Minnesota and Orlando. The reason why teams in Europe have the nickname is because thats what fans referred to them as. There;s history behind it. Minnesota United naming themselves united and then putting Loons on their badge and then pushing for people to use Loons nickname is absolutely superficial and disingenuous. Call yourself the Loon then.
what really bothers is me that AP and broadcast styling guides require writers and broadcasters to call them "Sounders FC" when really FC isn't part of the nickname. No one refers to Liverpool as Liverpool FC, for example.
I see your point, but in my opinion nobody is more Euro-centric than the Sounders, the Timbers, the Earthquakes and Montreal Impact (before they rebranded themselves). All those names were of teams that played in NASL. Nothing is more European than reincarnating old names of teams that folded in the past (all those were created in mid-1970s and later folded when NASL folded itself). The names are great though. By the way all teams in Europe have indication that it's football club, but nobody says "FC", because everybody knows. In my country FC is always in front of the team's name.
that Lions thing might create some bad blood here in Utah. Lions have now long been asoociated with Real SL and its royal imagery. :P LOL You know, because peopel these days have nothing better to do thatn waste everyone's times with arugment and litigation >.
As a Dynamo fan, it is not a homerun for the fans, but it was nice change. And you’re right, the clubs need to gage the fan base when it comes to rebranding. And yes Brener needs to get out, but we have making underrated acquisitions (shockingly). If we sign Salcedo, all is forgiven
I actually love that Montreal changed it! It's one of my favourite designs and names in all of soccer. I guess it connects better to the local community and to the French markets. I hope Chicago produce something good, it's so bad...
Dynamo changes are great. Best bet with a badge is keep it simple and let other stuff like kits & media add character. Sad that you didn't mention Austin, they've done great with kits, badges, and media.
I like the rebrands, I liked Chicago's. I'm a minimalist though so it works for me lol. I feel like the brand new one looks like every other Chicago thing with those flag colors. MLS has grown massively. The owners groups know what they are doing.
Always feel American teams should follow the traditional naming of the USA, occasional nods to other countries traditions is fine. As Fleetwood Mac sung "Go your own way".
I don't like the Montreal name change or badge to be honest, neither was needed. And I have to agree with you about all the circular badges. Also I don't like the FC been used. It's the MLS not the MLF so don't know why they try to use the FC. You guys call it soccer and not football so be proud of that. Especially with the knowledge that it winds up most Brits every time we hear the word.
I think french canadians call it "le soccer", calling it club de football doesn't make sense. Even in france they use FC, not CF It just don't make sense.
Just found this lovely channel! Two video suggestions though. Please do a video on the sounders search for a soccer only stadium. Could you also do a hypothetical relagation type system with mls, and usl
Charlotte FC is perfect. It's pretty common for soccer teams to have names and badges to relate to the city and to athletic sports that clubs take part of. The crown in the circular logo is perfect, neat and the name is simple, so don't overthink it. Also, teams around the world aren't called by their full names all the time. SC or FC is just a formality. For example, I'm Corinthians fan, but nobody keeps saying "SC Corinthians Paulista" or "Sport Club Corinthians Paulista", just Corinthians is fine.
The Charlotte FC Badge, name, and prices are all crap and have killed my hype, but I don't mind the colors as they do make since they share them with their sister team the Carolina Panthers off the NFL. I just wish they at least called them Charlottetown FC or Charlotte Crown FC. An alternate Mint colored kit would be nice too.
The MLS feels as if it’s afraid of being what it is. It’s America’s soccer league. Not a soccer league in America. They need to understand that and go back to having fun with their teams and images again.
100%. I’m an FC Dallas fan and it’s not even close that “Dallas Burn” is 10000000x a cooler brand and name than FC Dallas.
(Houston 1836) Dynamo has rebranded once already and had 3 logos. Playing in black in Houston is beyond stupid! Quit rebranding and getting a worth while team on the field. I dont care if all the players are white, black, hispanic, blue or purple.
Those stupid nicknames are a thing of the past and should stay there
@@Hero-and-Hooligan Agreed.
This channel is criminally underrated, cheers from germany!
@OEMMELGOEMMEL I agree. It's my favorite mls channel on TH-cam. I only wish he had the time to put out videos a little more often.
Absolut richtig man!

I hate the Charlotte badge, looks like a random generated badge from football manger for a team they don't have the rights too. Just doesn't show any passion they have for the club and looks like they did a 10 minute job on a logo creator website.
Well you not wrong, it look exactly like football manager badge.
The name sounds boring too. I somewhat liked Charlotte Monarchs. Kinda reminds me of Monarcas Morelia before they got relegated and changed the name to “Atlético” Morelia. Sounds gay
Charlotte Independence is infinitely better name, and has better badge.
I Disagree
Cosmos... what a great name and with some history.
My point exactly. Well put. II like these American names and badges even though I am not a big fan of MLS. I would love see Cosmos back.
I’m a little mixed on the rebrand on Montreal and Houston. But I’m glad Chicago is getting a new badge next year

What made these design worst for me was that the day after Charlotte FC was announce. NHL Seattle announce that they would be Seattle Kraken. That the type of branding I want to see more off in MLS. If MLS is going to be different go all the way
U have a point.
I hope that will change in the near future.
unless we add pro/rel
My profile picture was the og badge of fire. So mad they changed it
Those american nicknames are dumb!
But In The Future There Will Be Expansion Teams Wich Have Cool Names Like Las Vegas Lights Pheonix Rising And Indy Eleven
Fire & Galaxy = Good names. The Earthquakes is a stupid name, with all due respect
Our latest crest looks like clip art because of the ball, IMHO. I was told by someone inside the Quakes front office that when the Quakes submitted logo ideas for that rebrand, there was a shaking globe instead of a ball, which would have been MILES better than what we ended up with. Apparently the league told the Quakes to put the football in the logo because "all of your other logos always had a ball in it."
If that's true I think those east coast league officials should let the clubs design their own crests.
Yeah, and l am glad Sounders keeps its name with the badge, l would go nuts if that ever happen
As a UK fan of the MLS I love when it does something different. trying to copy the Prem or La Liga etc just feels contrived, I much prefer the Impact, galaxy, Sounders etc because they're unique names.
Could be worse, could go the root Metro Stars went...
They should be called the Charlotte Bobcats.
i was hoping for Queen City FC, its not as basic as {city} FC and not really a football/basketball team name like Charlotte Hornets.
Like there's a Baltimore City and Baltimore County?... but our teams represent the metropolitan no matter what
@@MarloSoBalJr I was referring to where the stadium is physically located. If where you play is in city limits, then use of the name “City” works. You can represent the entire region (or however large your TV blackout zone is), yet you shouldn’t have a name referring to a location if you don’t physically play in said location. That’s just me.
Arch City would of been the cooler name.
Sadly americanized names are actually rather common in other sports like basketball or ice hockey. But I agree.
I agree. All of this generic naming/branding just strikes me as pandering to a base (eurosnobs) who will NEVER embrace MLS. So it’s a fools errand
I'm an MLS fan from the UK, as i probably say too much, but the point is I love the MLS because it's different. No point in making another premiership with half the teams called United and the other half City, it's been done to death. Go all in on the cool names, have cheerleaders and tailgating and drafts.
@@TMAC803210 Perfectly stated.
Its fucking bullshit I'm so surprised because Montreal loves history. Try to do that to the habs .
Because our owners are idiots.
Wow “our”. I don’t even know if I like this new expansion team anymore.
Houston’s new one looks much better than their old clip art badge
I’m a Houston fan too and I never thought anything was wrong with the old logo. I don’t like this new one though. Just boring.
@@HoustonH If all the fans keep wearing the older shirts, and bring banners with the old logo etc, maybe they will take the hint.
I’m so glad my local club didn’t choose the any fc, sc, city, or United. I wonder why clubs have to choose one those options.
Who’s your club?
@@c200065524 browny!
Charlotte FC missed the opportunity to be named Racing Charlotte in ode to Charlotte being the hub for NASCAR.
The St Louis badge is cool. I remember the launch of NYCFC and it was a disaster. That really put me off for a while, but I couldn't support Red Bull. I'm glad they came around. Now about that stadium...
I know right. Who uses a baseball field for soccer (football)
As a Montrealer we all hate the new CF mtl logo the impact logo was so nice and unique
According to the club administration...we are just a TINY MAJORITY of supporters who are against it.
Tbf to the MLS teams the constant rebranding happened in the early years of European league football as well, teams are trying to figure out what there identity is and will eventually find one they can stick to
True. Plus, much of the branding in the first 10 years of the league hasn’t aged well and it makes sense why they were redone
As a Sacramento fan, I just hope we dont change our badge its already amazing. Its different but classy at the same time. Unfortunately I think we will change it.
Rather they changed the badge than the name.
But prefer they keep both.
Hopefully it’s just a small tweak if anything to the badge. They better not touch that name...
@@BKIslandersfan I completely agree Sacramento Republic FC has a great ring to it. It keeps its American roots of an original name but isn’t corny like the Wizards or anything like that.

Had no idea about Montreal rebrand and I don’t like it but I’m not a fan. Congrats to Chicago hopefully the badge is good.
We need a 2020-2021 MLS season prediction collab video with Jimmy Conrad!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would rather prefer St Louis FC than city. It rolls off your tongue better
agree but unfortunately, the owners promised not to take the USL name and St. Louis FC was the now-defunct USL team name
I laughed hard at the opening sequence. It's so true.
What a waste of time and money changing our name and logo , the backlash from the fans is big and even that a protest against the new logo happen last week.
talk with your wallets and boycott games until they decide to go back to the Impact name and crest
JMO!
Lol. Are the Rev's the only original MLS team left with their original badge?
That is great that they are rebranding Chicago. That logo was bad.
Houston perhaps instead of the letters it could have been that lightning bolt.
Montreal I am not a fan of the name repeating itself. Perhaps Impact could have been placed on there.
I like St. Louis and their logo. I feel that would have been the direction LAFC would have gone if they selected red and black as their colors.
I love the St. Louis badge, the only thing I would change is to make the arch in the badge Arch Silver to make it stand out a bit more.
The official fan group is called the St. Louigans. They are massively passionate soccer fans in St. Louis
I believe Impact might be reused in a Canadian Premier League team, the CPL doesn't even have a team in Quebec yet.
Maybe they'll have a team in Quebec City or Gatineau. There'll be a nice derby between the latter and Atletico Ottawa.
I don't see how unless Club Foot FC ownership owns the CPL Montreal side.
@@BKIslandersfan They won't own it, they're giving up the impact name i guess
right now it seems like the old Montreal Manic from the NASL has been revived and is possible if they get a CPL club
5:06 maybe it's an auto logo, but just the arch for Saint Louis wow
Once I was used to it the Saint Louis Stars were the NASL
Along with Sounders Timbers Whitecaps Chiefs Atoms Cosmos
As a person who lives just outside of Charlotte I really wanted Charlotte town FC
The new Chicago Fire badge should absolutely be Blues Brothers themed
as a Miami fan, I hope we never change our badge
It's seriously the best badge in MLS. It fits so well with the Miami Vice look.
I love the badge ...them and dc united are best for me
I really wish these expansion teams would do more with their name than just slapping FC at the end and calling it a day.
Houston's logo kinda feels like the creator was eating Piattos and suddenly used that as an inspiration for the badge.
Can we all collectively message Sacramento republic to keep everything the same? So beautiful! And imagine that themed jersey omg
Facts 💯
You know European soccer fans mock mls for being different then normal leagues but when mls tries to do what European teams do they mock them as well they can’t win
Exactly, it’s worthless pandering to them. We should just own what we do rather than caring what Europeans think
Houston Dash badge is actually really good.
Dynamo? Eh.
I think I prefer the Dash badge as well
10:07 Dollar Beer nights at PHX Rising games are always fun!! Can’t wait till the season starts in the newer bigger Rising Stadium 🏟 hopefully one day they’ll be sold a franchise slot in MLS 🙏🏽
Great stuff, as usual. This was the first that I had heard that the Fire had hired Wolff to work on this project, so that’s certainly encouraging.
I Remember masive hate to the 09 rebranding attempt of chivas (the main club) changing the colors of the lions and tree part to white & red on the bottom already got it in the bus
Video on NASL badges? 👀 would love to hear your opinion on my hometown's design
I second this
Video suggestion, what a about a ranking video on the top supporters section. Not top supporters but rather their dedicated sections within each stadium. Eg. Nordecke and sections similar throughout the league. Could just be an info video if you don't want to upset anyone by doing rankings.
The lighting bolt as the focal point of the Dynamo badge would probably have made it one of the the coolest badges in the MLS
MLS: **Starts Adding FC, SC, City and United to EVERYTHING.**
The Entire JLeague System: *"Wow yall really finna do that tho?*
Good shit! Need more quality soccer content for MLS, and you sir, are quality!!
As an SKC fan I would like the rebrand way more if they kept the wizard stuff in some way. Fan area calls themselves the cauldron in memory of the wiz.
Thanks for the $1 beer night shout out 😂
The point at 9:30 about releasing the concept and gauging opinion before going all-in is EXACTLY how i feel about the new Timbers Army logo. The board just picked one (a very boring one IMO) without ever asking the community what they thought.
Hit the nail in the head with the Dynamo. Definitely subscribing!
Even with covid I still didn’t know Houston changed their badge until I saw this video
Fun fact (then) English Premier League team Hull City wanted to do the opposite a few years ago and rebrand to the more Americanized Hull Tigers.
The Orlando City MLS rebrand crest was very popular among fans.
I'd be surprised if that was actual French for "football club."
For the Dynamo, my only thoughts were, they added FC to the end of the name like the Fire and, the hexagon shape is unique in MLS (and probably not all that common in all of soccer).
Great content. Love the background music!
I'm glad Columbus is keeping the name crew but the new logo is meh , I liked the badge we had.
the new DC United badge was well-received when it first came out IIRC
Seeing those new badges and names that came out just made me appreciate my Sounders 10x more than normal haha
Even in france they use FC, not CF
It just don't make sense.
We definitely need to get this video trending and make these MLS marketing teams watch this.
Love that you’re a fellow Vermonter! I’m from Newport!
You do realize if they ever move to another American state they can't be Charrolete FC anymore?
To be fair, Charlotte Athletic FC was my pick....
I was hoping they'd use the Panthers branding, that would be sick! They have the exact same owners anyway.
I like the Houston one actually, and I never liked the Impact, but I didn’t think it needed to change that radically just fix the font thats all.
