It's so uplifting but there's also an element of profound sadness. Younger Vincent probably became suicidal, which happened to lead to his beating Anton. At his lowest point, he was able to find the strength to sustain him in adulthood.
I could identify a great deal with Vincent in that way. Certainly for how being at a lowest point might spark the strength you didn't know you had. Gattaca is a film about being the truly best that you can be and especially in your own eyes.
For some reason, I just got so overwhelmed with emotion when I first saw this scene. I started tearing-up, and I may or may not have cried a single solitary tear. It's such an unexplainable but profoundly moving mixture of music, imagery, and pathos!
This is a philosophical masterpiece. It's about breaking the mold, about exceeding the limitations put on you by society. It's also very European; that is it delves deep into the individual potential of all of us, which the Age of Enlightenment in 1700's Europe allowed. The music, the clothes, the characters and the atmosphere is very European. Reach for the stars.
That could be true as well given that Anton had to be saved by Vincent in both instances. Perhaps the “superior” genetics still couldn’t account for the physical training Vincent had put in, in addition to the sheer willpower of course.
@conorwellman8592 0 seconds ago the swim is only a mettaphore. What it really means is he set on a path and never looked back or let himself be destracted. When there is no way back the only way is forward. Where as a Valid like Anton who was geneticly supperior never reached his potential because he was worried about things that were holding him back.
Vincent got routinely destroyed by Anton in this test until he was superior. Reaching that inflection point required great sacrifice and not saving anything for the swim back. Anton didn't need to be saved "both times", he needed to be saved the last two times.
Great scene! Thanks for publishing this. I love everything what's happening on the screen: the acting of the two brothers, the music by M. Nyman. I particularly enjoy the moment Vincent saves his brother from drowning and guides himself to the shore by looking at the position of the stars. Absolutely unforgettable, magic, awe-inspiring!
This movie is about giving life everything you got, for me. Going 100% and never pitying yourself or making excuses. I also identify deeply with the main character.
we saw this movie in my psych class today and i loved it. this scene was ahmazing. just goes to show that that is what humanity is. the shear will power to do what everyone says you can not. he put blood sweat and tears of hard work into beating his brother at something that just came easy to him cuz he was desgined that way. but that is the essence of being human, to work for what you want. love the theme of this movie.
It is now 25 years since i first saw the movie and this just occurred to me; Jerome was the swimmer who failed and Vincent was the swimmer who won. Took me a while to work that one out. lol 😉
Thanks for posting this scene from one of my favorite movies. Indeed, amazing scene, great acting, fabulous music by Michael Nyman. Why aren't more of these films made? I love how Anton saves his brother from drowning and then he swims to the shore getting oriented by looking at the stars. Awesome, awesome, perfection!
when you are told from a young age how great you are you don't really strive for perfection. however when you are told everyday about how useless and crap you are, you build up an innate drive to prove and better yourself beyond measure.
lol well to be fair you don’t need to go to such an extreme. You can certainly teach motivation and humility without telling a child that they’re “crap and useless.”
@gothatway09 No prob. He meant exactly that. Vincent is sincere in his passion to beat his younger brother, hence why he refers to the "other side". He saves nothing for the trip back so when he does return he literally has zero energy remaining. Our crew gives 150% percent every practice and regatta so that during our trip back, when we're sore, tired, and sloppy, we barely make it back to the dock. You can see this the first time Vincent beats his brother, they barely make it back to shore.
@aSHYian0 it doesnt refer to the island he refers the other side as in space where he wants to go and says why should he go back if hes already far out meaning what he did to get in to space nasa hes already went through alot of thins like surgery on his legs and stuff and now he made it to there so why should he go back. i made my point. thankyou
Lacking the ACTN3 protein does not seem to have any harmful health effects, but there does seem to be an effect on sports performance. Several studies have found that Olympic-level power athletes always have at least one working copy of the ACTN3 gene. ...They were soon proven wrong.... The fact that this long jumper is the first and so far only Olympic power athlete to be found who lacks the "gene for speed" is evidence for how important this gene is in determining this type of athletic ability. But his success is a testament to the fact that genes are not destiny. -23andme article
I grew up working with my hands. Helping pay for my brother's tuitions. One of them became a success and looked down on me all the time. Meanwhile I ended up on the streets, homeless, eating trash. Like a dog without a home. I'd steal rice by putting them in my pockets when I pass shops selling em. Worked the lowliest jobs. Got beaten a lot. Gun to my head. I never begged for my life. Years later I applied to a call center. Noone would talk to me because of how I dressed. I was rough on the edges. Wasn't graceful in educated groups. But I aced all the exams, being poor and uneducated I read everything I can get my hands on from trash. From refrigerator manuals to torn up engineering and pocketbooks. I faked my way into jobs. Always afraid they would find out my papers were fake. I tried so hard not to be found out I excelled in every job. In fifteen years I only ever misspelled one word. Now I have enough experience to not need those papers. I have houses and businesses. A pretty japanese wife with mistresses even. But still some people would look down on me. But they can never do what I do. Created new technologies only I can use. Wrote papers that got me cushy jobs. Life is not a matter of abilities but a contest of will. And those women who saw me as beneath them now ask for my attention. But how can I love such trash. No, not anymore.
@chetdog you completley miss the point. besides, vicent won the 2 that counted, he won the 2 most recent. if they did 1000 more im sure hed win those too cuz vincent knows what it means to perservere.
Reminds me of my brother and I he always compeats with me. I’m 58 he is 7 years younger than me but I look younger. We ran a5k a couple years ago and I beat him .
I am actually writing a paper on this movie for ap biology. This video helped me understand some of the basic points. I still have one question, what's the role of genetic engineering and how it relates to "genoism" in the movie? Please help me.....
if this took place in the future, computers wont look like that. and if this really took place in the future, they would know that titans temperature is about 94 K (−179 °C, or −290 °F)
The musical score was amongst the most amazing I've ever heard... Brings a rush of emotions to the heart and soul.. Love it..

Same. This movie has low key guided me thru life.
He can do this all day, Anton.

Reach for the stars.
Not just by society, by biology as well. Vincent did have a weak heart after all
Fantastic comment.
"I never saved anything for the swim back."
OK, but clearly neither did Anton if he needed to be saved both times.
That could be true as well given that Anton had to be saved by Vincent in both instances. Perhaps the “superior” genetics still couldn’t account for the physical training Vincent had put in, in addition to the sheer willpower of course.
Good genetics means nothing if you dont physically train for the task

Incredible. I never picked up on that. What a wonderful movie.
5:26 I love that part, with the music and the stars. It's great.
Willpower will always substitute for talent. But talent will never substitute willpower.

Best film, such an inspiration, it shows that if u try your bloody hardest you can do the impossible, therefore nothing is impossible.

Best movie scene ever
"Vincent! How are you doing this, Vincent!? How are you doing any of this!?"
There's no genetic quantation on the human spirit.
@jaysonlost This film wasn't promoted too much as a scie-fi film, it is a story of the human spirit. There is no gene for the human spirit.
It is now 25 years since i first saw the movie and this just occurred to me; Jerome was the swimmer who failed and Vincent was the swimmer who won.

There is no i missed you from Anton. He seems like seeing Vincent like a lost disabled man

If this is real (which is sure sounds like) I think it’s a story many would like to hear more about.
great movie
@dvu90 Not if you plan to swim on and make it to the other side.
@chetdog you completley miss the point. besides, vicent won the 2 that counted, he won the 2 most recent. if they did 1000 more im sure hed win those too cuz vincent knows what it means to perservere.
@littlewaterfall999 Me too!
seriously, why would anyone click the dislike button?
Probably Anton 😉
Reminds me of my brother and I he always compeats with me. I’m 58 he is 7 years younger than me but I look younger. We ran a5k a couple years ago and I beat him .
That's exactly how I feel during every regatta with my Crew team. Save nothing for the row back.
one of the few videos on youtube with 0 dislikes.. i wonder why? lol
@dvu90 you dont get it do you.
@tonmereestgross haha i saw this in AP psych AND my bio class loll.
@littlewaterfall999 so did I, 10th grade bio, Mr. Evans haha
Antons dislike for every time vincent rescued him

Genetic engineering means perfect human no monke. Monke bad…invalid
vincent 2, anton 1000
so who has won overall
Vincent. The two times he won he also saved Anton's life.
I think vincent proved a point and thats what mattered.
So did I, really beats out campy 1970s crap.
