Agreed. I miss when movies were like this. Made by directors with a specific vision who confined art/ideas with entertainment. Somewhat unrelated but lately I've been watching alot of 90s and 2000s sitcoms. Filled with life lessons/entertainment. I miss that balance.
Andrew Niccol, the director of Gattaca, stated in an article on Fandom that while Gattaca feels like an art film, it was not the intention when he directed it. “It’s a very strange thing. I don’t think you could make the same movie in the current version of Hollywood. Because that was a studio film. But now it seems very much like an indie film, so I don’t think you could ever replicate that.” It's interesting how we view things at a certain time and than later in the future. This was his debut film as a director in Hollywood, a make it or break it situation. So while we see this film now as something unique and unusual in Hollywood's standards, this was to him a Hollywood film at the time he was directing it.
That janitor boss was the only one in the entire building that recognised Vincent later on and didn't say anything. Goes to show people that clean our floors are important, astute and valued too!

its a nice idea. possible. but what i got from the movie was the conversation with Director Josef. When they were talking about admittance into the flight program (i.e. elites), the director said something along the lines of valid, but less specular people can rise to the ranks of a policeman but not an astronaut / into gattaca's employment. i think it was a signal from Andrew Nicol that Anton, for all his genes, was never close to achieving what Vincent achieved as an invalid. And that's shown multiple times, in a more obvious way, through the swimming scenes

The last 10 seconds of this are so important to the movie, but so many people seem to miss it. Physically, Vincent is perfectly capable of being a Navigator, but that doesn't matter to them. I read these comments and I wonder: How many praise the perseverance of Vincent, but then quickly condemn people who wish to immigrate to the USA. People who are willing to do anything they can to have a better life, to aspire more, to fullfil a dream. People who are willing to break the law if that's what it takes. And all to enjoy the same oportunities (i say oportunity, not entitlement) that a "normal" citizen enjoys. Think about it for a moment.

... many of them pay income taxes so their employer can get the usual tax breaks, but they can never reclaim their refund, they cannot deduct anything, they still pay sales tax like you and me, etc etc etc etc. Sure, we have no obligation to illegal immigrants, they broke the law, but I cannot blame them for wanting something better. I admire their perseverance and I really doubt this country is worse off because of them. Most of them contribute to the fiscal balance and get nothing in return.
It is true that illegal immigrants receive some benefits, particularly regarding their children if born in US, but that's pretty much it. Have you ever interacted with illegal immigrants? I have and I can tell you that the stories of "they get handed out so many benefits" is grossly exaggerated. I've seen illegal immigrants being told they had cancer in the ER and the hospital basically told them "good luck". They are not eligible for food stamps, medicaid (their kids are, not them)
A valid point but do you know that the vast majority of legal immigrants are through chain migration and many of them are the parents of the petitioner? Here is a common scenario: > Girl/guy comes to the US -> Marries American citizen -> Petitions immigration for parents Green card -> Parents comes to US and are eligible for Medicare from day 1 -> Parents petition all their children to come to US This scenario is FAR worse to the entitlement program as the parents never paid a cent in taxes.
this is one of the scenario that is resolved by the Immigration reform bill. A single legal immigrant can bring anywhere from 4-5 people with no requirements for education or anything, all of them legal and all of them eligible for federal benefits (unlike illegal immigrants). Now the bill is stuck in political pandering with people just saying "enforce the current law". Well the current law is being enforced and we get 1million legal immigrants with even minimum education requirements.
