Jim Carrey's best film. Great to see him gently humorous but not mugging outrageously. His sense of growing unease is unsettling and palpable, you really feel for him. Brilliant and underrated.

And his humor, unlike a lot of his films, has an underlying reasoning and set of swirling thoughts and emotions that are plaguing him and driving him into misery, but he keeps a cheeky demeanor all the while. Very in depth and well executed. When you really invest and dive into it you see all the layers, and you're right that it's his best film, cause it's multidimensional and contains so much behind the scenes (get it?)

I like how he starts to recognise regular patterns in this movie.. the human brain recognises patterns very easily and when things like this happen, such as this scene, it seem abit too perfect, soo perfect that it seems very creepy, thats why truman found out the truth.

I've seen this movie like 50 times. I've always wished this series of events was extended for like.... an extra hour. Truman just testing people and seeing what all he can get away with. Asking the other "townsfolk"for very specific information about who they are, walking into ALL the buildings, committing crimes that only he could know about, etc. His realization he's on a little movie set is just *blink* over and suddenly he's trying to escape. Great stuff. Great movie. Thx for upload. 🙏

There was a version of script that had this sequence longer, and the writers set up Truman to stop assault on young woman, but was cut because using that type of crime just to push back Truman intro unsure state about it being real or not, would have been in the bad taste and shifting story into a lot less joyful experience

"Stay focused. Remember who you are." Refers to the religious idea of remembrance of the self. It's about an ancient ceremony of remembrance using certain meditation techniques and consumption of a chemical substance called the eucharist in order to overcome the amnesia of incarnation that afflicts us when we come into this world.

It makes sense it was removed from a realistic point of view, because it was going for years now and Kristoff would've already lectured all the actors on how to act and what to do hence why they are always "amazing" at their jobs, saying "everyone stay focused" would've been cool too but I suppose that the more you thought about that the more it looked like a random thing to say to experienced actors that always risked things like these happening

Connor Fernandes I think according to Ed harris, and writers, it was an intentional ploy to boost ratings. They either permanently trap Truman with a fake wife and forced baby in SeaHaven OR they create massive boosts to the show's popularity by playing with his mind. I envision the show became formulaic by the time 'us' the film audience started seeing it. Since cristof was happy to force Truman into loveless fatherhood and even MURDER him on screen for ratings then I don't think any of this was an accident. When they cut transmission Cristof is happy that the 'Truman show temporarily off' montage is getting the highest ratings in the show's history.

@@therealjcon True. However once he agrees to a child they have a whole new Truman to see raised and immensely popular. I believe they played with the ratings war, with delusion, believing that Truman's father coming back would make him think the 'conspiracy' around him was simply about his father's strange disappearance. Truman's activity when he realizes the truth and the audiences'gleeful enjoyment of it likely made the show a big 'hit' again on network T.V? Their obsession with him going forward with a baby was a glaring indicator that would be the future of the show since Truman was now in his 30's and we'd already seen it all.

One good reason to delete the wheelchair/jogger part is because the director would have noticed him giving his sandwich to the wheelchair guy, and because of that they would NOT have recast him in a jogging role. Evern if they might have done it before (i.e., "Okay, this week you're a random guy in a wheelchair, and next week you'll be a random jogger"), the moment Truman interacted meaningfully with the wheelchair characdter, that would have changed future directorial plans.

fee fee The current story is that some minor mistakes are made by the studio, actors who breaks in (his dad, and first true love), a "star" that falls down as a studio spotlight, radio in the car tunes in on the same frequency as all actors and actors who do their tasks in a loop. Then Truman is pushing the boundaries of his reality as he knows it. The more he pushes, the more it gets unreal including more mistakes made by the studio. He soon understands that most around him is not real, but can't comprehend what's actually going on. At first he still trust his friends and wife but will find out that they're on some kind of complot as well. All this time he doesn't understand he's in a reality show, probably because he doesn't understand the concept of reality TV. The lightbulb moment is when he "sleeps" but is actually sailing. If the lightbulb moment, as you say it, was at the wheelchair incident the rest of Truman's journey would actually be lame.

I’ve always really liked how you can’t really tell when you’re watching from the ‘audiences’ perspective, and from the films perspective.

This movie shows you how each incarnated life works: your soul is injected into a new body (actor who doesn't remember where he's coming from) and then you are ready to go into a life (movie, simulation) where most of the people you meet, you have already met before in other lives ("recycled" souls but incarnated in different roles) and everything about the major events in your life and the people you will deal with was decided a-priori. And your higher self and spirit guides are there watching, behind the scenes, like spectators, at how well you perform this time, how well you will learn the lessons you have to learn. You get programmed via education, politics, religion to start with. Then a trauma here, an obstacle there, a little shot of luck, diseases, death of beloved ones, a new lover, a bunch of friends, a job in a certain role... all already determined before you even came to life. Still some free will to get from point A to point B of your life, but A and B are pre-determined already. The Truman show is a phenomenal metaphor of life, The Matrix is its Sci-Fi equivalent. The message is the same. Wake up. Truman manages to do it and shows you the way. Look for the glitches in the matrix ;) Recommended book to everybody reading this comment: "Journey of souls" by Micheal Newton ;)

@The Lifestyla True but let's not completely disempower ourselves. Once you are aware of the game, you can navigate much better into it. And if you open your mind and start looking at the countless signs/syncronicities you get (especially in critical moments of your life), you can recognize guidance and understand how to attract the reality you want. I once saw an artist walking on a tredmill with a sign that says. This is you. This is your life. That guy always reminded me of The Truman Show. His piece of art was meant to state that life is an illusion. You only think you're living it, but really you're just walking in place the entire time. You never get ahead, you never go anywhere, you just keep doing the same thing over and over again until you die. Kinda like Truman. Everything is fine as long as he keeps doing the same thing he's always been doing, but the second he changes things up the whole thing falls apart.

*YES!* I always *_knew_* that the build-up to Truman's realisation that the world really *_was_* "revolving around him" should have taken longer and been more of a deep and extraordinary revelation to Truman himself - it has *_always_* felt too much as if he effectively jumped straight from "vague suspicion" of the truth to "near-certain knowledge" - i.e. to the point where he begins to step in front of moving traffic because he *KNOWS* for near-enough sure that the vehicles will stop for him and he is in no danger.
I have *ALWAYS* felt that this particular part of the film was a little "rushed" - and it is a crucially important part, not only with respect to Truman's self-realisation, but also because it equally reveals (even via one characteristically brief shot/line of dialogue) so much of the character, motivations, and paradoxical power/neediness of Christof, in showing both his complete control over every actor in "his" mini-world (that one quote: "Remember who you are"... such a telling and brilliant line, conveying not only Christof's power, but also the irony of the Truman Show itself, since the actors are, of course, actually "remembering" who they are NOT, of course...), as well as underlining Christof's own genuine and evident concern on seeing that Truman is losing faith in his artifical reality (which, of course, threatens the self-made meaning of Christof's own life: the mutually dependent "creator-creation" relationship which is founded upon Truman) - and now I know *_why_* it felt rushed - it's because it *_was,_* due to the cuts shown here (and perhaps more? Who knows?)...!
Likewise, the first "incident" involving the overhead studio light "star" falling onto the street was left inexplicably open-ended; Truman obviously finds the event strange (who wouldn't?), but only a little more is said of it, and almost nothing of how it affected Truman himself, and I can now see that, in fact, Truman *WAS* very much influenced by this first and most peculiar event... I wonder why it was ever omitted, since it adds so much missing explanation to why Truman ever began to question his own reality? Just a saving in the film's running time, perhaps? If so, that is a real shame: it adds so much to the film's deep meaning.
This entire footage really *SHOULD* be restored, in my view... I have long hoped for a Director's Cut of this immortal classic film (and it is... although even now that it's finally become genuinely popular - only 20 years or so too late! - very few will give it the credit it deserves), and I, for one, would *_love_* to see *ALL* of this footage returned to its proper place in the film in any such Director's Cut version - and perhaps even the entire chronological sequence of Truman realising the truth of himself extended somewhat, if such scenes might also exist (but only if they already exist from the time of filming, and are original: if "recreating" or "extending" anything via after-the-fact CGI trickery would be involved, then no... just no!).
That entire part of the film (Truman's growing realisation of the truth), and its disquieting sense of "why is this happening so *_fast_* - can Truman really change his lifelong worldview *SO* quickly?"), has always been the whole film's only (and very slight) flaw, in my opinion... and I bet the footage *_was_* only cut for reasons of saving time, too, during the inevitable "audience testing" phase, because so many "average" audiences are too impatient to watch anything more than about 90 minutes long. If so, that's a terrible shame.
Maybe, however, in these days of Peter Jackson's _Lord of the Rings_ trilogy and similar lengthy film epics (OK, so that one didn't match the JRRT original book, but that's another [fierce!] argument entirely...), audiences are perhaps more minded towards longer films, and a Director's Cut of _The Truman Show_ would thus be feasible and would make decent money? Maybe - who knows? - a new and more complete version might be released solely because it *IS* such a classic that it simply deserves it...?
Well, one can dream... and hey, seeing that _Blade Runner_ (the 1982 original, *NOT* the modern sequel) was (eventually) given its due rendering by means of its superior Director's Cut version, why not an equally classic work of art such as _The Truman Show?_
Anyway. Thank you so much, +Movieclips Extras, for this most illuminating upload. I'm really grateful! :)

Far out, I wish people cared enough to write mutiple paragraphs on world issues rather than films. Haha no disrespect intended though. I just don't see many comments of this magnitude very often.
Personally, I can see why this scene was cut, it has some good ideas but the way they do in the actual movie was so great. On point, precise and conveys the messages they need to.
Padding it out any longer would have created more atmosphere and tension for the viewer, but I don't think its particularly needed. They do an excellent job of conveying that with the time they did give it.
A good movie has to work within the constraints of time and can do it without feeling rushed. That's what makes a good movie into a real amazing work of art, which is exactly what this movie is!
      Peace and love friend.

You need to wake up and realize this movie is mocking you. We’re on a flat earth. Space doesn’t exist, we can’t go anywhere. Earth was created on a foundation to never move, this is observable. No one has ever been to space, find real proof, not a fake nasa “picture”. All 3 “moon landings” had the same earth in the photos. Same clouds everything. We are being fooled beyond believe. Satellites are under the dome, the sun is under the dome and the moon as well. We get seasons and day/ night cycles as the sun and moon move around us, they go away from us not beyond the curve of the earth. If you were in a warehouse, and one end had a light, one end doesn’t. Would you see that light on the end that doesn’t? Know. Light only travels so far. Nasa tells us the curvature of the earth is 8inches per square mile. This would mean an object at 10 miles is over 6,000 feet of curvature, why can we still see it with our eyeballs? Why do planes keep their nose UP the entire flight and glide along the plane? Wouldn’t they have to nose down 6k feet every 10 miles to avoid flying off the earth into space? Either the earth is FLAT, or its 10x bigger than they tell us. Why would they do this? To control the population, is there more land beyond the Antarctic ice wall? Is that the so called “space”? This lie also strays us from our god and takes away our human power. To believe that the Big Bang was real, and earth has been here millions of years. The theory they went off of to create gravity and all this nonsense, was from GUESSING Saturn is the same size as earth. Without that, they don’t know how big the earth is. Wake up people. Do some research.

+TOMYSSHADOW Plays Games Yeah, I think as the audience we're supposed to infer that Truman is realizing that the exact same people are positioned the exact same way doing the exact same things every day, and they seem to either not react or freeze up whenever he disrupts the order. The "Same shoes" part is meant to show the audience that Truman is incredibly perceptive of his surroundings and photogenic, and to explain his funny/confused expressions as he looked around the crowd.
A bit too subtle for the casual filmgoer, I guess.

I must entirely disagree, I'm afriad. I've posted a longer top-level response saying the same in more words, but I feel the opposite of you: I think that the storyline seems to progress rather too *FAST* at the point where Truman finally realises that his suspicions are correct; these missing scenes are, in my view, not even extensive *_enough_* to cover such an enormous overturning of a person's entire worldview, and I feel that every second of footage shown here is both necessary and engaging - far indeed from "dragging".
I also specifically agree with "GaimeGuy" above, in that it was a good idea to show that Truman himself had above-average perceptions - many people, even when shown the kind of blatant errors which Truman saw (such as the transmission error on his car radio channels whereby camera crew directions are played to him by mistake, and even the instance where the back of the elevator is missing and the crew members are briefly seen, etc.), would still have believed the convincing explanations given to them not just by the world in general (the radio announcer, etc.) but even by their nearest and dearest (his own wife and best friend).
Few people would even be as perceptive as Truman in the first place, let alone have enough faith in their own judgement and deductive reasoning skills to question even their dearest companions: and certainly not to make the apparent "leap of faith" which Truman *_appears_* to make *BECAUSE* of these missing scenes: that is, from harbouring "vague suspicions" that the world is "revolving around him" to - almost suddenly, or so it seems, *_without_* these deleted scenes - being "near-certain" of his new and very different views... to the extent of standing in front of moving traffic and *KNOWING* that it will stop for him.
These deleted scenes aren't optional, in my opinion, and are certainly not "dragging" (and nor is the entire film; far from it!) - I'd say they are essential, and that they do much to ameliorate the sense of the story moving rather too fast during Truman's advancing self-realisation - which is, in my view, the only slight flaw in what is otherwise a film I cannot fault. It's still a work of genius as it stands; these out-takes would have only made it even more so, in my view... :)

I agree the following scene with him make more sense with it. But in total I can see why it was removed, since the appearance of his father should be the breaking point for him and why his reintroduction was believed to fix this. With this the shoes were the breaking point, a too obvious realization for him too soon. And much weaker storywise than his father showing up.
