Man, I am 28 years old and I assure I have never enjoyed a band as much as I did with Taking Back Sunday when I was 16 -20. Louder Now is my favorite album. Great video! Love from Uruguay
My brothers girlfriend once left a random burnt disc at our place back in ‘07. It had ‘TBS Louder Now’ written on it. I’d never even heard of Taking Back Sunday. That album changed my life. The song structures. The production. Heart wrenching moments in tracks like Miami and My Blue Heaven to the aggression in Error Operator and Spin. I missed the boat with TBS’s early punk/pop stuff and to be honest - all follow ups to Louder Now just haven’t hit the mark. Fred’s influence at that time is undeniable. And as Valentine said - Rubano’s playing is immaculate. It’s a shame to discover there was tension in the band during this era but at least one of the best ever rock albums came out of it.
This was great. I was one of the biggest TBS fans during the “Fred and Matt” era. I watched the TBS home videos and the deluxe DVD edition of Louder Now lol. Just thinking back to how huge TBS was at the time I cant even imagine what it was like for you guys to be apart of that whole experience.
Rubano is hands down my biggest influence. I learned how to play bass by listening and playing along to wywtb and LN on repeat when I first picked up the bass when I was 12
damn i met matt when i ran for them at the atl AVA gig last year and didn't even realize he was TBS matt! he was so sweet and accommodating. loved this convo, much love to y'all!
Are you kidding me? I didn’t realize this video was happening, I’m so pumped! WYWTB blew me away when it dropped and it’s still in my usual rotation. So happy for both of you guys and all that you’ve accomplished since!
Great interview, very cool to hear you both discuss that time in TBS. Matt’s analogy of being in a band being like marriage and there’s always 2 or 3 sides to the story that nobody truly knows but those involved.
Crazy hearing them talk about that first show back at the Randall’s Island Warped Tour in 2003. That was my first Warped and my introduction to TBS. 17 years later and I still remember that set crystal clear.
I'm very happy we could get together. I always knew in my heart that everyone in TBS was a good person. Things only got ugly in the press. When I was in the band, there were just different points of view and being older now, I totally get both sides.
Anytime I get to hear a story about any of the guys who used to be in the band running into the current line up and it's all hugs and smiles....def makes me smile! Thanks for that!
Ah man, I LOVE this. Fred, your scream 😍 First three TBS albums are perfection and so different. I can still remember the day I bought Louder Now loaded it up the CD player and repeated it all night! Amazing.
so good to see my favorite guitarist/vocalist and favorite bassist together for a chat! you, adam, matt, mark and eddie are my favorite TBS lineup, always and forever.
You guys made some big shockwaves. Just remembering how your musics impacted my teenage and young adult years almost brings a tear to my eye. I'm from Brazil and trust me, every person who did give a listen (and understood the english lyrics given we speak portuguese) just up and loved everything about the music. We just carried all these lyrics, riffs and confessions on our chests. I know a band is an organism and many members are responsible for many nuances, but there's something in this special era that's so unique it never clicked again for me the way these songs did. All my regards to both you and Matt!
Tell All Your Friends was the first record I heard by TBS when I first started high school, but WYWTB and Louder Now were the two records that really got me into music outside of radio hits by random pop bands. They opened up a whole new world to me and essentially turned me into a full-blown “emo” 😂 They also came at a really dark time in my life (a series of family deaths and a house fire; unlucky, I know 😅), and by listening to them, I was distracted from my real world troubles as well as guided to look inward and discover things about myself including who I was and what I wanted to do with my future. Because of this, I can safely say that without that band, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Now I’m an aspiring musician and I’ve been practicing multiple instruments including guitar, piano, and ukulele, bass, and drums, along with poetry/lyricism for the past year now when I’m not doing college work. It was that rotation of TBS, MCR, and FOB which shaped me into the person I am now, so thank you Fred and Matt for contributing a ton to my personal development and opening me up to a whole new interest in the art of music. You were the butterfly effect that kickstarted my world.
WYWTB came out the summer before my senior year of high school, I'm 33 now. I had started to fall in love with TBS from TAYF, but the first time hearing you and Adam's vocals together, I was blown away. WYWTB is still my favorite TBS album, I picked up and listened to it front to back about a week ago. Still know all of the lyrics. Crazy time traveling experience. Thanks for this interview and thanks for all you do Fred. So much love.
Fred i saw you guys in New Jersey, i never met you but man you seem a very down to earth dude. Thank you for all the music man, it was awesome. Love from a dude from Jersey ✌️
This is great. It was SO nice to hear you guys catch up and reminisce. It sounds like everyone has found some amount of closure and there is nothing that makes this Taking Back Sunday fan happier than that. Much love to you guys. 🙏
This really brought a tear to my eye lol It's so nice to see you guys together again. Now once Eddie gets better, or maybe he already has, let's get him on board and make some magic hahaha. :D Nothing but respect for you guys.

When two of my favorite and most influential musicians ever meet up again after all these years, it's like a nostalgia kick right in my face. Watching this video was so much fun. I'm looking forward to hearing you both on a song together again.
@@TheColorFred, just the way you all played off each other musically was just perfection. I'm such a fan of your work. Thank you for all of your contributions to music!
Great conversation. A great point made by Matt that resonated with me - about being in a band with and sharing something that's meaningful to all of you - Years really can go by, with little to no contact, but you always feel a bond, that comes right back to life. I remember a while ago bumping into a former band mate from like 7 years ago - we'd toured in tiny vans, slept on recording studio floors, got paid in gas money, sweated out an EP we loved that didn't get heard enough etc. As we finished chatting, he said something along the lines of 'Just remember, we did SOMETHING, we really did something back then'. And i was thinking, fuck yeah we did - it's nice to share such a bond.
All these videos are so great Fred. When I was 14 and still a beginner musician I would take my copy of Where You Want To Be to my guitar lessons and my teacher would help me transcribe and play all of the tunes. Learnt that album basically back to front! Really important for my formative years. I went and did Music school and education and teach music full time now at a secondary school :)
Really enjoyed this video. Louder Now is one of my favourite albums of all time, both from a musical standpoint and a recording/mixing/production standpoint. Would love to hear more about working with Eric Valentine if there's enough interest, everything that guy touches is audio gold!
I needed this I love all of you but I'm so glad your all having good times doing your own thing and there's always a chance of a reunion...I mean look at My chemical Romance they were a huge band and came back I don't see why it's not possible for you guys to play together again to
This was so cool for TBS fans Fred, thanks so much to you and Matt for doing it. Where You Want To Be is forever one of my fave albums, vinyl up on my wall
I was there at the first show. It was so dope. There was this weird "brand new vs TBS" thing going on with the fans. I felt like that fueled the singing before the show.
Lol I remember all the little internet drama threads back in the day. Rumors of taking back Sunday vs brand new feud. Rumors of why John left TBS, etc. It was like its own little celebrity drama world lol.
lovesgibson right? I remember people having shirts made up that said something to the effect of "mic cables are for swingers not singers” and the brand new chess piece hanging from a rope.
It's really nice to see stuff like this after years of the magazines and sites always trying to stoke the flames of rumors and drama. Haha. Great conversation and would love to see more like this, Fred.
This is great. I was really getting into rock when I saw the make damn sure video on MTV. Became the soundtrack of my middle school years. Such great memories. Really love that era of TBS.
The Color Fred I got back into your content after hearing your interview with Shane Told on Lead Singer Syndrome. Great to see that you’re still doing music. It’s also really nice that you interact with all the people commenting on your videos.
I love this line up. I remember listening to tbs for the very first time back in 2004. I was in 4th grade and briefly remember listening to tell all your friends. I would tune in mtv to watch the video rotations of a decade under the influence and this photograph is proof
These videos are a breath of nostalgia and a great backstage pass (of sorts)! I looked up to you so much growing up as a musician and it's good to see you again after all these years. Thanks for doing this and cheers from the Caribbean!
Great stuff Fred! I never got to see you with TBS. I was so mad that i missed the AVA/TBS tour in 2006. But, my consolation prize was seeing The Color Fred open for them in 2008! I was front row at the Baltimore show. At a point in the set you straddled across to the barricade and were playing above my head haha!
Woah, I flew to Riot Fest from Toronto last year, and would've been gobsmacked if I ran into you watching TBS, Fred! I was also pleasantly surprised to see Matt performing with Glassjaw that year as well. This is fun; keep the conversations coming. Going stir-crazy with quarantine.
Kinda miss their time with TBS. I started with bass mirroring Matt's playing especially on What it Feels Like To Be A Ghost, then shifted to playing the guitars and I really cant keep up with Fred's prowess.
Loved this! Please please please do more of this kind of reflection and stories. The Eric Valentine story alone was so epic to hear. Keep up the great work Fred!
Thanks for this! So cool to get a peek behind the scenes of the TBS days. I enjoy all the TBS albums, but it's still WYWTB and Louder Now that are the standouts by far. I remember hearing A Decade Under the Influence on MuchMusic and my mind was immediately blown, it was unlike anything I'd heard before. Crazy, that was 16 years ago...... but you guys have both aged well :)
This was awesome! I still lament the fact that you guys weren't able to stay on and make more music together, I do love all TBS records but Where you want to be and Louder Now were really special records. Fred's backing vocals sometimes only a subtle difference, but other times just stood out and really made it a new sound that seemed to work even better than John's. Regardless I love it all but you guys made some awesome music together.
I saw you guys at warped tour a week before where you want to be cane out. It was amazing show and it cemented my love the band and everyone involved. That brave heart shit you guys did with the crowd was inspirational. Just thank you man
Absolutely wonderful to see this . Fred and Matt you both have great history and have touched so many lives (including mine) with your talents. Thank you both!! (Matt aka Mr. Al-U Minum)
It means alot to hear from you! Thanks for watching. At this point in my life, I really do look fondly at those times. Glad to have gotten to know you back then. Peace.
Thank you guys for sharing your stories together!!! you guys are amazing music artists!! 💯🤘❤ you inspire us in so many ways 👏 Louder Now album is my fave btw
Taking Back Sunday is one of my all time favorite bands and I love everything they have done. But honestly they have never been better than when you two where in the band. I was front row when you were on tour with AVA and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I miss Fred's guitar shreds alot!!
TBS should just turn into a Supergroup haha. Keep john and shaun, but add back in matt and fred, Make a louder now part II, dominate like the early 2000s again. Matt and Shaun can do dueling bass solos. Fun times all around! Hahah 🤘🏻
Bumped into matt in a hotel lift in Bali We looked at him then looked at each other and went ..."is that" ? He walked out and we thought " pretty sure it was" Turns out it was Matt Rubano on tour with TBS in Indonesia. Seemed like a cool guy.. Hope hes doing well.
Can you please reunite with TBS by any chance? if no then please just one more song with TBS with you both and the nostalgia emo rock style or WYWTB era..pleaseee..We all been waitin for that moments...Lovelotss!!❤️
I remember an interview that suggested that TBS was really low on ideas when you both joined. How large an impact did you guys have on where you want to be and louder now? (both of which were my favourite TBS albums).
Yeah. I would say that the guys in the band were very generous with letting our ideas come to the table right away. The most common thing early on was someone would come in with a riff. I liked to use Eddie's riffs at first because it kept that TBS sound going (Bonus Mosh, Decade, 180 by Summer). Adam would have lyrics and, as the singer/songwriter guy, I would try to put the two things together into a song. As that happened, we all got in a room to finish things up. Everybody had their strong suit, music theory vs. style vs. songwriting... Other songs could be more written by one person, but in any case, we worked as a team and we only did songs that all of us could be excited about. The rest would get cut if we weren't feeling it.
It is so inspiring that you can get a group of unfamiliar guys together like that and knock out two of the best albums of the emo era of music. I think of other bands like gob who had to move through a very rough sound together to hit their peak.
I was just thinking, maybe if you meet up with Matt again or any of the guys from TBS, or just by yourself you could do a video talking about the music industry and mainstream music industry, stuff that people might be assuming or not expecting about the industry. Was being on a major label the dream that most hope it would be? How did it feel to be traveling the world, playing huge amphitheaters, performances on national television, Degrassi, Denny’s restaurant enchilada lol, popular music videos on MTV, etc. lol. (My first ever concert was one of the summer amphitheater shows you did in Chicago back in 2006 with angels and airwaves.) I think it would feel so surreal. It’s crazy to look back and think about how big that genre of music had gotten. It probably rocked the mainstream music industry which is probably why they tried to sign lots of bands at that time - and I would think it was a good decision since lots of these bands sold hundreds of thousands of albums. Also kinda curious if you have any thoughts or theories on why that “scene” eventually kind of died out or became a shell of what it was. - was the music not at the quality it once was? Were people just wanting to move on to something new (EDM)? I would guess it was a combination of a lot of things. I suppose all throughout music history, things come in and out of popularity.
There's alot to cover there, but that's basically what I made this channel for. All great questions! I'll be taking note and plan for a music industry video in the near future. Thanks
I honestly can't decide who I liked better. John or Fred. Louder now is my favorite TBS record, but I also love that John is back. Idk maybe have both at the same time.
I remember recording at a studio in NY that had a Where you want to be gold record on the wall and realized I was where I wanted to be. You guys have a heavy influence on who I am today and I wanna make damn sure you know that :) also funny enough, my photograph is proof!
I hope someday you guys are invited back to the band to play a multi night concert where you both perform on the nights that WYWTB and Louder Now are played 🤞

Kinda miss their time with TBS. I started with bass mirroring Matt's playing especially on What it Feels Like To Be A Ghost, then shifted to playing the guitars and I really cant keep up with Fred's prowess.
Thanks Fred!
Wow, this is a great discussion. Thanks for this.
I really appreciate you watching ❤️
@@TheColorFred 😀
Loved this! Please please please do more of this kind of reflection and stories. The Eric Valentine story alone was so epic to hear. Keep up the great work Fred!
I’ll keep making these as long as people keep watching. There’s lots more to tell. Thanks 🙏
Oh man! This was awesome! Would love to see you and Fazzi shred it out (IB can get in there too!)
That sounds like fun!
They were things we worked really hard on and were lucky that people liked it so much. Thanks for all your kind words! ❤️
Thank you Ben!
so stoked you two got to sit down & chat together. love all yr videos Fred, but this one really takes the cake!! Thanks for sharing : )
It was so cool to finally talk to Matt in this way. Used to see him everyday. 😊
I would love for you guys to make music together again!
I'm sure we will
Really awesome to see you both just shooting the shit and having good vibes. Wish you both the best
By the way that yorkie is adorable! More of that little dude as well
hahahaha!! I know!
These guys are the real TBS to me.
I saw you guys at warped tour a week before where you want to be cane out. It was amazing show and it cemented my love the band and everyone involved. That brave heart shit you guys did with the crowd was inspirational. Just thank you man
We got in so much trouble for Braveheart in Canada because a bunch of kids were hospitalized from it. I felt so stupid 😌
The Color Fred oh damn well at least in Montana it’s was beautiful
I hope those kids ok but that’s also a somewhat great experience that those kids will be taking about for a lifetime
Great to see you guys together after all these years. Great stories you both shared. Hoping for a collab from you two soon
Thanks for watching! I'm hoping too.
I love seeing you guys together.
Peace.
hell yeah, this was awesome
Hey Fred! I'm a huge fan of you! I take a lot of inspiration from you! Maybe one day our bands might be able to play together!
That would be awesome. Thanks for writing
@@TheColorFred for sure ❤️
Great chat guys. Really enjoyed it
Thanks for watching!!!
Loved the interview, hope to see Matt again on this channel!
You will!! Thanks for watching
Thank you guys for sharing your stories together!!! you guys are amazing music artists!! 💯🤘❤ you inspire us in so many ways 👏 Louder Now album is my fave btw
Thank you so much!! We've had so many great times together. It's nice to look back.
Looking forward to this one
Me too!! Thanks
Taking Back Sunday is one of my all time favorite bands and I love everything they have done. But honestly they have never been better than when you two where in the band. I was front row when you were on tour with AVA and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I miss Fred's guitar shreds alot!!
🙏🙏thanks for the kind words
I would love to see Adam and Fred talk! This was really dope!
Thanks for watching ✌️🤘
TBS should just turn into a Supergroup haha. Keep john and shaun, but add back in matt and fred, Make a louder now part II, dominate like the early 2000s again. Matt and Shaun can do dueling bass solos. Fun times all around! Hahah 🤘🏻
Honestly, I think a line-up I'd love to see is Adam, Fred, John, Matt, and Mark
You know what would be sick? If the two Matts, Fred, and Mark formed a band. But I heard that Mark was really the most bitter with Fred.
My two TBS tattoos are from the Fred and Matt era
Best riffs from TBS
Heck Yea! Thanks for watching!!
This was dope! Love these guys
Best TBS lineup IMO
Bumped into matt in a hotel lift in Bali
We looked at him then looked at each other and went ..."is that" ?
He walked out and we thought " pretty sure it was"
Turns out it was Matt Rubano on tour with TBS in Indonesia.
Seemed like a cool guy..
Hope hes doing well.
Literally the best TBS line up
Can you please reunite with TBS by any chance? if no then please just one more song with TBS with you both and the nostalgia emo rock style or WYWTB era..pleaseee..We all been waitin for that moments...Lovelotss!!❤️
These two were the special thing in tbs.
You’re very kind
Thank you for this! This is awesome!
I was so happy talking to Matt about our history. Thank you for watching!
I was just thinking, maybe if you meet up with Matt again or any of the guys from TBS, or just by yourself you could do a video talking about the music industry and mainstream music industry, stuff that people might be assuming or not expecting about the industry.
Was being on a major label the dream that most hope it would be? How did it feel to be traveling the world, playing huge amphitheaters, performances on national television, Degrassi, Denny’s restaurant enchilada lol, popular music videos on MTV, etc. lol. (My first ever concert was one of the summer amphitheater shows you did in Chicago back in 2006 with angels and airwaves.)
I think it would feel so surreal.
I was at that same concert in Chicago! That was a highlight of my youth. TBS was on top of the world at that exact moment. 🙏❤️
There's alot to cover there, but that's basically what I made this channel for. All great questions! I'll be taking note and plan for a music industry video in the near future. Thanks
The band was better with the two of you. Back in high school I remember watching the louder now behind the scenes documentary... man good times
Would love to see you get one of the guys from Breaking Pangaea on! I still listen to you guys almost every day.
That’s awesome!!! I do have plans to talk with those guys.
I honestly can't decide who I liked better. John or Fred. Louder now is my favorite TBS record, but I also love that John is back. Idk maybe have both at the same time.
Awesome video
Thanks!
I remember recording at a studio in NY that had a Where you want to be gold record on the wall and realized I was where I wanted to be.
You guys have a heavy influence on who I am today and I wanna make damn sure you know that :) also funny enough, my photograph is proof!
Hahahaha... I assume that was Mission Sound. We did the drums there.
I believe it was! It was in Brooklyn. Way cool!!
I hope someday you guys are invited back to the band to play a multi night concert where you both perform on the nights that WYWTB and Louder Now are played 🤞
😊
