    I'm glad to have come across this video. I saw Breaking Pangaea play the Punk Temple in Brooklyn around 2002/3. I asked you about how you were able to go from clean to distorted with a single channel amp, and you pointed to your volume pedal. As a little kid and beginning guitarist at the time, it was very enlightening.

    • @TheColorFred
      @TheColorFred  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The magic is IN the presence knob for Marshalls. Took me over a decade of playing them to realize that. Try running the presence up a bit and the treble way down sometime. That’s the sound, IMO.

    • @TheColorFred
      @TheColorFred  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I will try it! To be honest, when recording, I’ve been turning the presence up to about 3.5 just to get more clarity.

    • @kalehardy7791
      @kalehardy7791 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m pretty sure the presence knob is supposed to be like a bass knob for a the master tubes or something, probably why he cranks his bass. Maybe it’s opens up the highs as well that’s why you’d turn the treble down.

  • @MisterRorschach90
    @MisterRorschach90 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for making this video Fred. I’ve been slowly falling down the rabbit hole of studio setups. I’ve been a musician for decades. I’ve learned multiple instruments and even recorded, but one thing I’ve always told myself “I’ll learn that later” on was studio gear, set ups, and how to properly use it. It’s fascinating. And it makes me feel like a complete and utter monster for having messed with the faders and knobs on the analog consoles at the recording studio my dad worked at growing up. I knew it was bad. But it was like telling a kid not to press a red button and putting him in a room with 3000 red buttons.

      Yes, the Rising Sun one was the one I was talking about. We’ve had some great resources here. I hope some new ones can continue the tradition

      @@TheColorFred yeah they seem to be going away rather quickly. Im up in Lansdale now and have a small guitar repair mod shop set up so if your ever in need or can't find any helps just holler. Keep the channel pumping currently playing FIFA and watching your content.

    Really enjoyed this, thanks for running down your rig for me...it answers my question about what 4 pedals you'd use.

    Wow, surprisingly simple and efficient setup! My guitarist uses the Bad Monkey too. He Can’t pinpoint why he can’t get rid of it lol

      The Bad Monkey was this cheap pedal but it's so good! Anyone that knows of it is usually a big fan.

    Awesome rundown! Did I spot a red Variac in with your pedal collection? You love EVH alright! What happened to the badass doubleneck from the Pre-Transmission days?

    • @TheColorFred
      @TheColorFred  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! You guessed it!.... I still have the double-neck. Ought to break that out actually. Thanks for reminding me

    @The Color Fred 😂 Those are the best times though, when you lose yourself. What I'd love to hear about in a vid is your take on the music industry and the emo scene, like how did you find it? What was your experience? Taking Back Sunday were huge, it must be a special feeling. Love hearing your stories. I love how down to earth you are and how you respond to everyone ❤

    Sounds so good, Fred! I love the minimal setup. I’m gonna try using my 800 this way since I struggle with clean to lead sounds. Looks like it’s time to break out my EB VP Jr again!

    Fred you are recording new TCF songs with Bed Monkey ? Thanks

    Cool how you use your volume pedal! Jim from Jimmy eat world turns his neck pickup almost all the way down and switches to that for a clean sound, and I stole that trick from him back when I was playing a single channel amp.

    • @TheColorFred
      @TheColorFred  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! That's a good trick too. As long as the eq doesn't change drastically... Depends on the guitar usually.

    One last question do you ever play around with Strats or Tele it is a difference sound I love the quak sound and you gotta do AC/DC cover with that SG 😝

    • @TheColorFred
      @TheColorFred  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought a Tele about 2 years ago and I love it. I use it a lot for recordings. For me, the SG is my sound though, so I just feel most comfortable playing it live. I love all guitars though!

    So how teeth-rattlingly loud is it to play right in front of it or are you using attenuation? Anyway, love the tone - time to mess with my Marshall JVM head to see if I can get close to that tone on channel 2 (out of 4) haha.
    And I have never put my JVM’s master volume above 9 o’clock, even live hahaha

      @@TheColorFred dang get a Two Notes Captor or Captor X. The regular captor for $269 was my Christmas present from my lady, haha. I can put my master volume at 8 o’clock for apartment safe levels aka practice amp loud with the Captor :)
