    I was deciding between a new Honda or a new Can-Am Outlander. This convinced me that I need to purchase the Honda. Thanks!

      Yeah, I love my Can Am, but this is a little nuts.

    • @olegk455
      @olegk455 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can am is five times the machine regardless compared to Honda. There are easier ways to service the gear box anyways. I did it from the bottom the first time, although it’s quite tight and on my second change I just installed the Fumoto quick drain plug and drilled the RH side panel with 1/2” hole to access the plastic plug with socket and extension. No panel removal is needed at all for gear box oil change.
      Another idea I have but Haven’t tried yet, one can probably just suck the oil out through the fill plug with an oil extractor next time without even pulling the drain plug at all.

    Noticed this video was 4 years old. I’m assuming you now realize footwell can stay on to change fluids. Great video.

    And here I thought removing the battery was hard, this is nuts. Keeping the dealers service dept busy is their only goal it seems.

    The hardest part for me is getting the right side footwell back on. Trying to not scratch up or break it too. So far unsuccessful. I can build a 9 second car, engines, wiring, glass, chassis, everything but paint, but I can’t get a footwell on a can am. We Todd Did!

    Just a heads up to anyone doing this, You DO NOT have to take off the step to do the oil change. You can get to the filter with just the side panel off. Way less work, the filter comes out with about a 1/4 Inch to spare

    Just a small piece of advise about removing the foot rest when changing the engine oil. I just drilled a 1/2 spade bit hole inside the right side fender of my Dads bike. It allows you to access the bolt on the oil filter cover and save you a lot of add headaches. Not sure about the gear box bolts, but I am sure it would work and that way you dont worry about dropping the bolt between the skid plate and engine. Let me know what you think seeing I am only 13 and and dont know much.

    I bought a 2018 outlander not knowing about this. Anyway i went to do the gear box oil and the part that pissed me off was releasing the 3 fender tabs (front and rear 6) i felt like was streeseing the fenders to remove the foot well. It really put my plastic fenders under alot of stess!

    Just did my first oil change on 2020 can am 450. What a frigging disaster. Spent more time removing various panels and whatever else is necessary for the oil change. How about if I cut out small part of the black section of the lower panel with Dremel ? That way is access to the oil filter should take two minutes.

    Was quoted $350 today for the first service on my 2021 outlander 570. This is absolutely ridiculous that they make it this hard to access the oil filter! Even adding coolant is a pain. Have to unscrew the display just to get the plastic covering off to get to the coolant.

  • @spooln30

    • @utahwanderlust700
      @utahwanderlust700 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, I'm not impressed. I can change the oil and filter on my Kawie in a quarter of that time, and it doesn't spill all over the water pump or casing. That's just crappy engineering on Rotax's part. You shouldn't have to deal with that or the fact you have to tear apart the whole right side of the quad for the kind of money these things cost!

    on my '11 800r I have stripped drain plug thread. careful on tightening.

    • @spooln30
      @spooln30 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely caused by over tightening the drain plug. Just tq it to the manufacturers spec and it should never strip.

    • @ZbysioR
      @ZbysioR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      naah, Im a machinist and I see few causes. 1. There is only 3to4 full threads, meaning that the case is too thin in this spot. 2. they used a coarse thread instead of fine thread. 3. the case is made of some cheap shit cast aluminum. Im pretty sure its not magnesium. Plus some torque warning would be nice. Thats my take :)

    • @spooln30
      @spooln30 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zbysio R Good points but what does you being a machinist have to do with anything? Could have just made your points and I would've agreed anyways. I don't own a Ham so I am not familiar with the cases. My Arctic Cat oil drain plug stripped and was most likely caused by the PO. There's probably .5" of threads but being aluminum and people not understanding why things need to be torqued are usually why DP strip. I used a steel insert for my repair instead of just a heli coil. Imo a much better repair.

    • @ZbysioR
      @ZbysioR 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      30spooln just giving a bit of background, to show my knowledge of metalworking. I agree with you on proper torquing. I found that out the hard way and Id love to have an early warning. In my case I simply used a larger metric tap (14x1.25MM if I remember correctly) on mine and I'm very careful tightening it now. Cheers

    Wow. I just bought a new 800r outlander and wanted to watch this to get an idea before I go to service it and it all looks so unnecessarily badly designed as far as making anything accessible. Not to say an arctic cat is at all better overall but my old one I'm coming from was at least easy to do any sort of maintenance. didn't have to take anything apart to change oils. and the cartridge filter is just an added pain in the ass. nice brp.

    what a complete pain everytime you need to change to oil. My machine has done 20hr and I thought I would give it an oil change. Cant be bothered now due to the hassle involved in removing all those plastics. Let it get an oil change once a yr at the local bike shop now !!!!

    OMG I thought I was watching a joke video. My 700 Kodiak is about 2 minutes for oil and filter because nothing has to come off or even jack up.
