  • Tucker Neary from Electric Cycle Rider tests the battery life on the new 2020 KTM Freeride E-XC electric dirt bike against the older 2017 KTM Freeride E-XC model. KTM claims that the new 2020 model has 50% more range than the original model and we wanted to test both bikes to find out.

    Although these bikes are not designed for a motocross track, the driest option available was IMI Motorsports Complex in Dacono, Colorado. The conditions for this battery range test were less than ideal but it is a real world performance test.
    To record this test, Tucker used a Polar Vantage watch and a LITPro GPS Tracking device on his helmet to record his lap times.

    The Freeride E was introduced to the United States in a limited quantity in 2017 through KTM's Electric Pilot Program. In 2020, KTM has finally released the updated machine to the US market.
    The KTM Freeride E-XC is based off the same platform as the popular KTM Freeride 250R but instead of an internal combustion engine, it uses an electric motor and battery to power the bike.

    My local shop has the 2020. I can get it plated easily as you can street legal dirt bikes where I live. Even with the limited range it still seems like a sweet bike. I commute to work (12 miles round trip through quiet neighborhoods in the hills) the silence would be amazing as people didn’t like me when I had my loud wr450sm) Wonder how well it would do with using it in the middle setting and just cruising with a light wrist on trails.

Sadly I have to sell it because of conservationist. The only reason why I would buy one of these is because they are quiet. The conservationist wouldn't even know I was out in the woods riding.

    I would be interested in a range test riding it like a trail toy like it is designed for. Looks like fun but our weekend rides typically are about 80 km so if these could make it the 50 or so miles that is equal to at trail pace it would be perfect.

    Can you let us know what the temperature was outside during the test? Given li-ion batteries' sensitivity to cold, I'm curious. Both bikes were tested in the same conditions, so it's perfectly fair. I'm just curious if the range for the style of riding is relevant.

    • @ElectricCycleRider
      @ElectricCycleRider  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Brad Landers Yes, good point and something I should have mentioned in the video. It was 50 degrees out when I was riding. I did charge the batteries and transport at room temperature, so I don't think there was much life loss due to the cold. Thanks for pointing that out!

    • @a64738
      @a64738 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes my 48v 500w/h electric bicycle struggles to get uphill or in headwind with cold batteries when it is +15c or colder, +20c and it goes up infinite long hills or against headwind forever. It is ok if battery is warm when you start but if you take 5 min break and it is colder then +15c you loose a LOT of power on the battery as it gets cold (when you ride it keeps the temperature it got but cools down and do not get warm again when stopping).

  • @youtubeaccount9058

  • @a64738
    @a64738 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    How is it in the cold? My 48v 500w/h electric bicycle struggle to get uphill if it is less then 15+c degrees outside unless the battery was warm when you started riding. And if it is colder then +15c and you take a 5min break the battery is cold and will struggle to get uphill... If it is 20+c the bikes goes uphill long stretches' or in headwind forever no problem at all without loosing power.

    Peak power has increased about 2kw from the 2017 model to the 2020 model. But I'm still suprised how little it has improved during 3 years.
    Talking about the actual topic of the video: range. Electric vehicle range is super easy to estimate. Forexample if you have a 4kwh battery and you ride on average 8kw power -> you will have an empty battery in about 30 minutes. But taken in to consideration the controller defficiencies and possible heat loss it will most likely be little less.

      @Gone.Coastal KTM would not jeopardize their current entire off-road lineup by offering a competitive electric bike. If it was truly competitive with their ICE bikes, it would cannibalize their current lineup.

      As for now, the Freeride is an awesome bike for those of us embracing the electric technology. Could it be better? Of course. But it's an incredibly good machine considering the point in time we are at with this new electric technology and it will continue to improve. Thanks for watching. 👍
